long time coming
"You can't use any of your flashy powers within the limits of the city," Howard explains as the trio walks through the busy streets. "They real strict on that stuff here. There are inhibitors all over the place. And watch out for the guard, they're total brutes... actually you might get along with them."
A very human Emily crosses her arms, grumbling, "I hate this. I can't even shift into my Hulk form."
"Yeah, you're a lot less scary when you're just a puny human."
"I will pluck every single feather from your body and make myself a scarf from it."
"You were definitely not loved enough as a child," he mutters. "And no, that is not an invitation to share your tragic backstory or whatever. No one gives a crap."
Cosmo barks at him, "I care."
"Are you always such a suck-up?"
Emily stops all of a sudden and turns around. Her eyes scan the crowd, landing upon a man dressed in all black staring straight at them. "Run."
"What?"
Emily spots another man to her left and another to her right, "Is there any place more crowded than here?"
"Yeah, a nice club-"
"Go there. Take Cosmo and Fin with you. I'll find you later. And don't die."
"You care?"
"No, I still need you to find my dad. That's all. Now go." Emily places Fin Fang Foom on Cosmo and they take off, leaving her behind.
Emily ducks into the alley waiting for whoever's following her.
The three men walk into the alleyway with weapons raised. One of them scoffs, "Too easy."
"You saw me look straight at you and then conveniently corner myself and you think I'm the dumb one?" Emily places a hand on her hip, "Why are you following me and do you have any preferences on how you want to die?"
"We know you have a Stone. It's not meant for little girls like you."
"Okay, you only answered the first question," Emily points out with a smirk.
"Give us the Stone or I'll shoot your head off."
Emily thinks it over for about a second, "And how do you know I don't want to die? I mean I have an Infinity Stone. Maybe I want to be killed and you'd just be helping me."
The man stammers, "Well-uh- why would you?"
"Everyone I love leaves me or dies," Emily replies in a monotone voice.
"Oh. Wow. Umm... I don't know how to respond to that."
"It used to really bother me but I don't really care anymore. And I like it. Everything is so much easier when I don't have that angsty voice in my head telling me to look deeper into things."
"You are really messed up."
"So are you if you want an Infinity Stone. If it doesn't kill you, people chasing it will," Emily gestures to the men. "I think that makes you the ones with the death wish."
"Just give us the Stone!"
Emily cocks her head, "No."
"Do it!"
"No."
One of the men thrusts a weapon in her face, "Don't make me ask again."
"You were asking? In that case, I'm going to have to decline politely. Thank you for asking."
The man attempts to grab her arm. Emily ducks out of the way and grabs his arm, twisting it behind his back. She pulls out a knife and holds it against his neck, "Don't be rude. Did you really think that would work? What, did you think I was just going to hand it over to whoever asked? If you don't want this guy to die then you're gonna want to leave me alone."
"Or maybe you should've made sure there was only three of us."
A dart flies into Emily's neck. She lets go of the guy and plucks it out, "Nice try."
Three more darts land in her neck. Her world starts to spin faster and faster until she slumps to the ground.
The men quickly put her body in a bag and carry her off.
An electric shock runs through Emily's body, jolting her awake in the metal chair she's tied to. The multi-colored alien men stand in front of her. The one who appears to be the leader steps forward, "Where is the Power Stone?"
"I hid it. On a planet. But only the Chosen One can find it," Emily lies, cocking her head. Another shock of electricity runs through her. She lets out a dry chuckle, "That tickles. Haven't felt that in years. It really takes me back to the ol' forced murderer thing. Man, that sucked."
"Where is the Stone?"
"Gave it to Thanos so he wouldn't kill me."
"Who even is that?"
Emily scoffs, "Wow. You're dumb."
Another shock ripples through her body. The man waves the remote in his hand, "Don't make this any harder than it has to be. We don't want to hurt you."
"There's nothing you can put me through that I haven't already gone through. I've been stabbed, electrocuted, and shot. I've had just about every bone in my body broken. I've had my brain scrambled far too many times. So do whatever you want because as soon as I get out of here I'm going to hunt all of you down and make you suffer dearly."
"I'll let you think it over. But in the meanwhile, I'd love to see how long a Terran can last before blacking out due to electricity," he presses the button and a continuous shock of electricity runs through Emily's body.
"Alright, hold it like this," Bucky helps a much younger Emily handle an assault rifle. She does her best to follow his advice, looking to him for assurance without speaking.
Bucky glances around, ensuring they're alone. "Sestra, you can speak around me. Your handlers are not around and I need to be able to speak to you if I am to train you."
Amelia blinks, opening her mouth to speak. Her voice is hoarse and small, "y-y-yes. You say, sister?"
"We have shared experiences and are partners on missions. You have my back and I have yours. That makes us... family."
"Family," Amelia tastes the word out on her tongue. "So... you brat? Brother? You look out for me..... I look out for you?"
"Exactly."
"Eh, she still looks too alive," one of the men remarks. "She said she's survived being dead or something so let her have some more."
"Happy Father's Day!" Emily weakly announces with her hands up as she stands in a nearly destroyed kitchen. A burnt pancake falls off the ceiling and onto her head.
Bruce stifles a laugh, looking at the disaster. "Wow. Uh, honey, this is great."
"I ordered some food and it'll be here in like 15 minutes."
He lets out a sigh of relief, placing a kiss on her forehead, "Thank goodness."
"Okay, just crank it all the way. She is so boring."
"Peter, hey," Bruce greets, opening the door to his suburban house. "Em is upstairs."
"Great, thanks, Dr. Banner," Peter heads upstairs. Emily's door is wide-open and she's dancing around to some song.
Peter leans against the door with a smile. Emily stops without even turning around. "I may not have a spider-sense but I can still tell when you're watching me like a creep."
"The door was open."
"Whatever. What's the test over tomorrow?"
"Shouldn't you know?"
Emily snorts, "Like I pay attention to any of that. Ooh, how about instead of studying we go on patrol."
The distance sound of chatter can be heard from upstairs. Emily's brows furrow, "That's weird, Bucky doesn't come over until Thursday."
"Maybe your dad has guests over?"
"My dad never has- crap. Harley- uh- Peter let's go."
"Um, why?"
Emily ignores his question and walks down the stairs. And of course, the Avengers are there. She loves them but when they show up like this it means something's wrong. Bruce is first to notice her intrusion, "Em, go back upstairs."
"Wait no, let me guess. Since they're here, they need the Hulk so it's big. There hasn't been all that much on the news... and Homeland-"
"Did you- Emily, please tell me you haven't hacked a federal agency," Bruce pleads.
"What? No, it's more like blackma-"
"That's worse. Pretty sure that's worse and we're going to have a long talk about that later."
"We need your help," Steve interrupts, faced at Emily but talking to Bruce. Right? Hopefully. Oh crap.
"Not how I saw this going down," Emily admits. "Because that can only mean it has to do with my past, right?"
"We're tracking a man that you may know, Mariano Sacchi."
Her blood runs cold. "Uh, Peter, we're going to have to reschedule the study session."
"Are you sure, I can-" Peter stops due to the look on Emily's face. "I'll just let myself out through the Peter door."
"He means my window," Emily clarifies. "I'll see you later, Pete."
"Em, who is that guy?" Bruce asks.d
She doesn't answer, looking to Steve instead, "What do you need?"
"No. There's no way. We had an agreement. You aren't supposed to mix her into all this stuff!"
"Do you think we'd be here if it wasn't important?" Tony counters. He places a hand on his long-time friend, "We need her help."
"I'll do it. Whatever you need," Emily agrees, completely unbothered by her dad's protests.
The scene changes to a wintery forest. Blood drips onto the pure white snow, creating a stark contrast. Bruce grips his daughter's blood-ridden limp body, "I got you. It's gonna be okay. You're going to be okay. Please be okay. I can't lose you. Wake up. Please wake up, Emily."
"Oh, wow. That's... something. Put her back in. Ignore the warnings," the man orders.
Emily convulses, her eyes rolling back into her head. She flops back into the chair. One of the men pokes her with the end of a metal stick. Her hand reaches out and grabs the stick, yanking it from him. She cuts her ropes and shakes them off. "Who wants to die first?"
"This is all just a-"
The other men pull out their weapons and aim it at her. The man sighs and pulls out his too, muttering under his breath.
Emily fights all four men off all at the same time. It's honestly been a while since she's done it the old-fashioned way with no powers. It's not as quick but it gives a huge adrenaline rush. She swings the metal stick around, beating her assailants senseless. They're all left knocked out on the ground.
"Hey! Let me out of here!" a raspy voice shouts from a covered cage. Emily walks over and pulls the blanket off of the cage, revealing a blue bald cybernetic woman. "Open the door."
"Because I'm totally just gonna let a random lady out who might try and kill me."
"I'll kill you if you don't let me out," she growls.
Emily cocks her head, thinking it over, "I'll let you out if you tell me your name."
"Nebula."
"Wait, are you Gamora's sister?"
"You know my sister?"
"That should've been implied at least we don't have to fight," Emily mutters, lightning piercing her head. She winces, stumbling back. She shakes her head to clear it and opens the cage, letting Nebula out. "How exactly did you end up in a cage?"
Another splitting headache hits Emily, knocking her to her knees. She grips her head, catching a glance of Cosmo in the corner, "Well, don't just stand there!"
Cosmo trots over. As he gets closer, the pain gets increasingly more intense. Emily pants breathlessly. "You need to care again, Amelia."
"No.... I... don't..." she grits out. "Get the heck out of my head."
"Not until you turn it back on."
Emily howls out in pain, memories flashing by her eyes. Despite the power blockers, the lights above them flicker dangerously.
Nebula looks on in surprise and interest but doesn't interfere. She wants to see how this plays out.
The room cuts to New York....... in flames. The city is on fire and in the middle of it all? Emily. Except not Emily. This one has no light surrounding her, only darkness emitting from every part of her.
"This isn't you! Kid, you gotta stop this," Tony warns, repulsors aimed at Emily. She's going on a tiny rampage. Tiny.
She spreads her arms out, daring him, "No, this was always me! You just never wanted to admit it. I am only the weapon I was created to be."
"Em."
She smirks, twirling around to face her dad, "Hey, Pops."
"Listen to me, you have to stop. We can figure this out together."'
"No one wants to hurt you," Bucky adds, walking up to her.
"Oh, let me guess. Cue Natasha," Emily points to her right and sure enough, a red-haired assassin appears on her right.
Natasha raises her Widow's Bite, "Don't make us do this."
"So, we have my dad, who won't do anything to harm me so he's the emotional appeal. Bucky knows all of my moves and the first person who taught me humanity. He'll fight me but is mostly here for emotional appeal. Tony is going to try and take me down in the most non-lethal way. Then Natasha is here to kill me. She'll feel terrible about it but she'll do it. And that is why she goes first," Emily shoots her in the head. Natasha falls to the ground, blood dripping from the hole in her head.
"Stop.... it...." Emily grits out, her head pounding. Her eyes burning a sick and bright green, "I am going to kill you, Dog."
Cosmo takes a firmer stance, concentrating all of his willpower and mental energy on her.
Emily grips her head. This isn't happening. It's not. She didn't do this.
The floor is littered with bloody bodies. Steve. Sam. Wanda. Thor. Bucky. Natasha. Tony. Bruce. Peter. Everyone. Everyone she has ever loved.
Emily stares at her hands in disgust, they're blood-stained. She killed everyone. She lost everything. It wasn't taken from her. She had it and then she just ruined it.
Her knees give out under her. She lets out an agonizing cry, tears streaming down her face. Her body is numb. Her chest twists and turns in pain. "I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry."
Light ripples off of Emily as she slowly opens her eyes, a stray tear dripping off her face. She weakly pushes herself to her feet. Her eyes land on the dog and duck pair. Her eyes are as green as ever. "If. You. Ever. Get into my head again. I will personally hunt you both down. You wanted my emotions back? Maybe you should've considered the fact my family has outstanding anger issues."
Howard takes a cautious step back, "Listen, we were just hired to do a job. The lady was all scary like with a hood and-"
"You two lied to me, tricked me, put a target on my back by letting me take an Infinity Stone, had me kidnapped and mentally tortured me. And now thanks to you, idiots, I have to go help this lovely lady kill Thanos before he gets all the stones and destroys everything."
"That was kind of the plan," Howard confesses. "Unlock your emotions and whatever. Now you care and are willing to save the universe."
"If I were the two of you, I'd get as far away from me as possible." Fin Fang Foom climbs up to Emily's shoulder. "Now if you excuse me, we have a titan to kill."
