Give me a chance
"All you had to do was say some nice things and smile. Instead, you decided to tell the whole world that you're not only Bruce's daughter but you turn green!" Tony scolds, pacing back and forth in front of me.
I raise my eyebrows in disbelief, standing up from my seat to face him. "I did exactly what you would do. Actually, I did exactly what you did."
"Yeah, I know I'm proud of you!" he tells me still using his angry voice.
"Then why are you yelling?" I ask.
"Because I'm a terrible example of what to do!"
"Dad, you're a great example... most of the time. You've done some pretty dumb stuff. But everything else-" I stop when I realize Tony is staring at me with a strange look on his face. "What?"
"You just- you called me Dad."
My eyes soften, smiling sadly I let out a sigh, "You are. Technically. You did adopt me, remember? Not just that, you've been there for me since the beginning. You mean just as much to me as my dad does. I actually wanted to ask you something."
"Oh, I'm scared now," he half-jokes.
"Can I take your name? Like your last name. And I'd really just add it on to my name now. I just-"
He places a hand on my shoulder, "Fine but this doesn't mean you get anything else in my will."
"I'm in your will?"
"Do you really see me as a father figure?" Tony redirects.
"You're more of a bother figure if anything," I grumble.
He tussles my hair, "Respect your father."
I swipe his hand away, "Don't make me hurt you."
"You know you love me, daughter," He teases.
"Okay, that's it. I'm leaving. Make sure Peter doesn't get himself killed," I tell him, picking up a small case before my body turns to light and fades away.
The world passes by me faster than I can even process and I find myself in front of the Barton house. I glance at the case at my hand before knocking on the door. Clint opens it, "Emily? What are you doing here?"
"I need a favor."
***
"Nope. No way. How could you even ask me to do that?" Clint shakes his head, pacing back and forth.
I open the case revealing a green tipped arrow, "This is all you'd need."
Clint shuts the case, "Millie, you really can't ask me to do this."
"You're the only one I can ask," I correct.
"How about Natasha?" He offers.
"Clint, it has to be you. You know that. There's no one else except you."
Clint sits down with his face in his hands, "This isn't ever going to be necessary. You know that, right?"
"I'm an Inhuman. That means I'm part alien. Now, I'm part Hulk too. For the majority of my life, I was an emotionless brainwashed weapon. That begs the question, how human am I? And in case you haven't noticed I don't exactly have the best record when it comes mental stability. I was literally mind-controlled a while back. This-" I open the case once more and take out the arrow. "-is a precaution."
"You want me to kill you. Do you realize how messed up that is? I can't kill you."
"You never miss. All it'd take is one shot to the head," I inform him.
"Your dad would kill me. He'd smash me. Do you have any idea what you're asking me to do?"
I nod with a sad smile, "Yes, I do. Don't worry, I'd make sure no one blames you."
He stares at the arrow in my hand, taking it in his deep in thought. After a few minutes, he speaks again, "Okay. I'll do it if there's no other option and if there's no other way. Hopefully, I'll never have to. I'll become terribly unpopular if I killed Aurora."
"Aurora? Oh, is that what they're calling me? At least, it's not something dumb like Gamma Girl."
"Yeah, revealing your identity on live television? Ballsy move," he remarks.
"I don't understand why I'm named after a fairy tale. My powers have nothing to do with sleeping," I complain.
He chuckles, "It's for the Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights."
"Oh. I guess that's fine then." My phone buzzes with a text. "...Sorry, I have to go. Emergency. I hate to cut this short."
"It's fine, just next time bring me food, not an arrow to kill you. Deal?"
"Deal," I agree, throwing up a peace sign before fading away.
"Emily!" A voice calls out as soon as I land.
I turn around and open my arms for Cassie to run into, "Hey, kiddo."
She collides into my body, wrapping her arms around me. "Did you really beat up my daddy?"
"Only a little," I reply with a smirk.
The door to Scott's house opens and Scott sticks his head out, "Oh, hey. You're not here on Iron Man business are you?"
"Don't worry, I'm just here because she said there was an emergency," I answer. I look back to Cassie. "Which was what exactly?"
"My classmates didn't believe I knew you and they were calling me a liar."
"Well, I can't have anyone making fun of you. That just won't do. Let's take some pics."
After an extensive photo session, I lie with Cassie on the ground. "Your dad really loves you. You should appreciate that."
"I know. He just tries to the right thing and sometimes that gets him into trouble."
"Cassie, I may not be around for a while. I have to go find my own dad and he's far far away. But I'm gonna give you something in case you ever need to find me or I ever need to find you." I sit up and face Cassie, holding her hand. Her aura lights up to bright rosy pink.
Her eyes widen as she looks at her glowing arm, "Woah. This is so cool!"
I close my eyes and feel a piece of me leave and go to her. My eyes open and I smile, "Stay safe, okay?"
She nods enthusiastically and runs inside. I smile sadly after her. She's all that I never can be. Innocent.
My body turns to pure light once more but instead of immediately speeding away, I just stay and float for a second. The world doesn't even look like the world when I'm like this. Everything's a lot more colorful. It looks like an acid trip and I'm the only one who can see this. I doubt anyone else could even process it.
I zip away, focusing solely on my target destination. It's the only way I don't end up at the bottom of the ocean by accident.
"Just wait, she'll be here in 3, 2, 1..."
I turn to Harley as soon as I land, "Oh, I hate you so much."
"Yeah, yeah, I know. By the way, there are some people who want to talk to you," Harley says, gesturing behind me.
I turn around and see Walter with the lawyer from New Mexico. "Oh.. hey? You got all furry and big."
"You get all green and glowing," Walter fires back.
"How do you have gamma radiation?" I ask.
He tsks, "Well, that's a long story but remember my college roommate I was telling you about? From Culver University?"
"Culver University? I'm guessing the fact that my dad went there isn't a coincidence?" I question.
"We were roommates. He was the brains and I was the brawn. When I heard that he also became the brawn, I got jealous," he explains.
I slowly nod, "Okay, and are you suing me or something? Is that why you brought a lawyer?"
"We never got properly introduced," The lawyer steps forward with her hand out, "Jennifer Walters."
"That sounds very familiar. You also look familiar. Am I supposed to know you?" I ask bluntly.
"We're family," she tells me.
I instinctively take a step back, " Sorry, it's just that some of my family are criminally insane and you seem alarmingly normal. You wouldn't happen to have gamma radiation, be part alien, take any strength-enhancing serums that warp your mental stability, or have any plans to attack any mass populations?"
"A-are all those people in our family?" She asks in disbelief.
"Mostly on my mother's side," I explain. "But yeah."
"Wow. Not gonna lie, that's kind of scary but I'm just Bruce's cousin," She tells me.
I let out a sigh of relief, "You don't even know how happy I am right now. It's so nice to meet you."
"It's nice to meet you too."
***
"What's next? Are you going back to India?" Harley asks as he moves a pawn up on the chess board.
"Eventually but for now I'm leaving."
"Leaving?"
I take his pawn with my knight, "The planet. I'm going to find my dad. "
"Great. I'll come with," he offers.
I laugh but stop when I realize he isn't joking, "There's no way you're going to space. Do you know how dangerous that would be?"
"Exactly why I won't let you go alone. Every time I turn my back, you almost die so I'm not turning my back again. I'm in it for the long run." Fin Fang Foom knocks over all the chess pieces. I pick him up and let him climb onto my shoulder.
"You have no idea how much you're risking and for me? Space isn't like going to Wakanda. We don't know what's out there. We'll be on our own-"
My rambling us cut short by his lips connecting to mine. He smirks and whispers against my lips, "Shut up."
A warmth spreads like fire across my face, "At least I was conscious this time."
"So you knew I kissed you and haven't said anything this entire time? What were you waiting for?"
"I figured if you really meant it, you'd eventually do it again," I reveal with a smirk of my own. "Now, let's go figure out a way to get to space."
