~Chapter 21-Run~

You hum, swaying from side to side, walking over to Muffet's for the day. Papyrus said he wanted to check out Sans' room just in case he had any weapons. You wipe the snow flake off your nose, heading up to Muffet's door, ready to feel warmth. Just as you go to push open the door, something catches your eye.

Looking over, you see Sans walking back from his post. Yet something wasn't right. He stumbled a lot, and almost seemed in pain. You didn't want to risk going near him, but after hearing him cough and cry, you knew something was up. You let go of the door, scrambling over to him in a hurry.

"Are you okay?!" You ask, pushing up on his chest, making sure he doesn't fall.

He lifts his head just enough so you could get the horrifying sight. Blood leaked from his eyesockets and down his cheekbones, as well as clear tears, making the blood look bright and fresh. A weird, grey substance oozed between his teeth and down his chin. His hand was layed over the top of where his soul would be, trembling with fear. He stands up straight, and when all of his bones popped and broke, you take a step back. He looked almost deformed.

"S-sans?"

His insane smile falters once, immediately stretching across his face again. That look of panic on your face made him feel in love even more. Just before reaching out for you, he stops, head twitching to the side. His stary eye vanish and are replaced with nothing but empty looking eyesockets.

He leans forward to you, holding back tears. You thought he looked miserable. He was fighting with himself.

"You need to run."

You back away, turning around and breaking into a full on sprint for the house.

"Papyrus!" You scream, hoping he would hear your plea.

He teleports in front of you almost immediately, wondering why you looked so shaken.

"S-something is wrong with Sans..." You shakily point over to him, eyes wide.

You take off your glasses, wiping the snowflakes off with your long sleeved shirt. Papyrus looks ahead to see Sans standing there, a wide smile stretched across his cheekbones.

"W-well hi, Papy!" He cheers, clapping his hands together.

"Sans, what is going on?" Papyrus asks, shoving you behind him without another thought.

"Nothing! I just want what is mine, and that would be (Y/n). I know she told you. She tells you everything." Sans takes off his bandana, wiping away the grey water and blood off his face. But he couldn't wipe away all the tears since they never stopped.

"Actually, I don't think it's (Y/n) you're after."

You peek out from behind Papyrus, feelings Sans' red pin-pricks land on you. They felt like acid against your skin.

"You don't know what I want!" He yells, catching the attention of the whole town.

"I want to be with Error again!" He clenches his fists tighter, tears continuing to stream down his face.

Papyrus looks back at you, then to Sans again, contemplating if he should through with his plan or not.

"Why do you want to go back? All he did was hang you up like a puppet."

"Because he made me like this in the first place. Around him, I can be myself. But he dumped me back in the stupid town where I don't belong!"

His words stabbed at you heart, making tears pool at the bottom of your eyes. You grab Papyrus hand, pulling him down to your height.

"Papy, I need to reset." You whisper, hoping Sans couldn't hear you.

He sighs, looking over to Sans who had now dropped to his knees and starting crying. He pushes you over to him, a look of horror crossing his features.

"Go. I'll be waiting where we first met." He looks away, upset for you, for Sans, and for himself.

You nod, scurrying over to Sans, collapsing in front of him. You put your hand on both sides of his face, lifting his head up slightly.

"Sans, for as long as I live, I will find a way to help you. That's a promise from your best friend." You hold out your pinky, giving a soft, motherly smile.

"(Y-y/n)-"

You shush him, wiping some of his tears and holding up your pinky higher. He gives a heartbroken smile, linking is pinky with yours.

You stand, looking back at Papyrus one more time, feeling your chest tighten.

The world around you becomes pitch black, only two, orange buttons floating in front of you.

"Unlike my useless sister, I'm going to help Sans, because that's what best friends do." You press the reset button, letting the tears in your eyes fall.

You glasses drop to the ground, cracking when they hit. You clench your jaw, laughing under your breath.

"I promise."
