The Engagement

Chapter-9

Abhimanyu is sitting in his room, it was the day of his birthday on which he promised his sister to take outside. He is completing the practice of math.

His head is kept in the book, just like a bookworm he is. After making sure he is perfect of the formulas, he got up and tidied his room. Went to washroom and took a bath and wore a blue faded jeans, puberty is hitting this Nerd but he is so unaware of it.

After making sure he looked presentable he went to his mother and the three left outside. The gates of the big mansion opened.

Abhimanyu went to the driver and asked him to take them to the city. "Umm Abhi sir, but your father ordered not allow madam to take cars." He said and Abhimanyu frowned at him. "But now I am telling you, take us." He said sternly but the driver didn't move. "It's okay Abhi. You and your sister come in the car I will come by public transport-" "No ma! Let's leave." He said scooping his sister in his arms.

"No Abhi, it's alrigh-" "Maa please!" He said and started leaving. Shaking her head his mother followed the sibling duo.

"Annaya (brother) dad won't come?" His sister asked in her cute voice.

"No he won't. But don't you worry we will enjoy!" He said trying to cheer his princess up. Reluctantly she gave him her most pure smile. Their mother adored the bond between this siblings and always felt proud.

The climate is a little cloudy and the winds are blowing fast by the time they got out of the shopping complex completing their lunch.

Suddenly it started raining heavily, so heavily that they can't even see the vehicles.

"Abhi! Take your sister and go the other side. I will come slowly with the bags." His mother said and Abhimanyu protested "No maa you leave with Divya (Abhi's sister), I will come with the bags." He said and his mother protested but he convinced her to leave.

He picked the bags and saw his mother and sister are crossing the road. Just as they were about to reach the other side, a huge van hit them... Making his sister fall to the front... And his mother to fall beside her unconsciously... Abhimanyu's revived from his shock and ran to them with tears in his eyes...

He first went to his mother who is moving a little, "Ma..." "Abhi! Divya... She-she got... Hit!" She said breathing heavily. No one even came towards them to help and when Abhimanyu went to his sister, there she was lying unconscious... In a pool of blood!

Aarohi's POV:-

Sometimes, it's hard to understand and cope up with life. I had been selfish for the past 5 years. And now I am regretting staying alive. I loved Vishal... So much that it hurts to move on. Especially with a man who betrayed his friends.

Abhimanyu Varma. The man who was once my best friend with whom I couldn't say anything but he understand everything about me. We used to sit in silence and be able to know what is happening on the other side. Abhimanyu was always used to be my support system, I was always his first priority in everything. But things changes and I still don't know what made him.

Giving Abhimanyu a chance means cheating on the promise I made to Vishal. Vishal was my first and will be my last. I sat infront of the mirror as the beautician did her work on my face.

She started applying red lipstik, my saree is a red pattu one with a gold border. My hair is in a fish braid with flowers adorning it. For a moment I forgot for whom I getting married... I still can't digest that I got engaged to Vishal, but never got the chance be as his wife.

I sighed when my mother opened the door of my room smiling ears to ears but I didn't return her smile. I couldn't bring myself to...

It has been a week since the day I met Abhimanyu, and already today is my engagement. My mother made me call to my office and inform about my engagement. In two months I will be Abhimanyu Varma's wife... Mrs. Aarohi Abhimanyu Varma.... that name sounds weird even to think about.

"Let's leave. It is time for your engagement." Priyanka. My best friend said entering inside my room making me sigh. She gave me a pitiful glance before accompanying me.

My heart is beating louder and louder. The whole time I bent my head and the memories of me having my engagement with Vishal are flashing infront of my eyes. Tears are threating to escape.

Soon I found myself infront of the stage and Priyanka helped me to climb the stage.

I looked up to see Abhimanyu standing there in a suit. A royal blue one with white shirt. I sighed and him my hand when he extended his. I looked at our hands. I removed my hand slowly and soon the rituals started.

After every ritual getting done, we are asked to exchange rings. I gulped when my mom pushed my to face Abhimanyu. He stood infront of me with nervousness, his hands shook a little as he asked for my hand as another hand if his is having the ring.

I looked into his eyes and the uncertainty soon disappeared as our eyes locked. How quickly this man changed his emotions? I scoffed. Ofcourse he can! He is Abhimanyu Varma afterall!

I gave him my hand slowly and he slipped the ring to my finger. A lump is forming I my throat and with each minute passing, I feel like I am getting short of breath. These are the same people who blessed me to have a great life with Vishal. He extended his hand and I slipped the ring to his finger. I looked up to him and he looked at me.

"Smile please!" We heard the photographer and turned towards the camera. Putting the best fake smile I have ever smiled he clicked a few pictures. "Sir, drap your hand around madam's shoulder"

Okay! This getting over.

Abhimanyu glanced at me and I bent my head down. "No need. Let the guests come." He said and the coldness in his voice sent my chills. But nonetheless for the first time after so many years I felt relieved staying by his side. Soon our both side relatives came and greeted us.

The function came to an end soon and I took a breath of relief. "Let's have dinner." My mother said.

Our close relatives and family gathered and my mother served food for everyone. We completed dinner and it is time for Abhimanyu's family to leave. We are standing outside my home seeing them off, Priyanka is standing beside me and we both are talking randomly regarding my work.

I felt someone staring at me and saw Abhimanyu making his towards me. He stood infront me. I looked into his and I raised my eyebrows and he glanced back at his mother.

"Uhumm, can I have your number?" He asked and I can see Abhimanyu's mother looking at us with my mother.

"Sure. Give me your phone." I said and typed my number in it, I gave him back his phone, giving a small smile to my best friend he left with his family.

"He looked like he is forced." Priyanka told me as we made our way towards my room. "It doesn't matter... Not anymore." I said and soon she left with her husband.

I went to my room and I looked at my appearance. Closing my eyes as tears slipping from them I sobbed quietly.

"It doesn't mean anything... It doesn't.. it can never mean anything to me." I told myself.. I went to washroom and took a cold shower which calmed my nerves. The ring on my finger is not heavy, but the relation it brought me to heavy that I feel like I am getting numb with all the heaviness this new relation is giving.

I removed the engagement ring and kept it on my dressing table. Brushing my hair neatly I braided them and settled on my bed. I closed my eyes and let another nightmares filled sleep engulf me..

Hope you all are doing great and are wearing masks. The cases of covid are increasing with each day passing so stay healthy and wear mask whenever you go outside!

I am in my granny's home and that is the reason I am not able to update my both books frequently as I had promised.
