chapter 36

HARLEY WOKE UP TO VIBRATIONS SHAKING THE PEW SHE WAS SLEEPING ON,

She quickly sat up, reaching for her knife, her eyes scanning the building for any signs of danger.

Harley immediately noticed Daryl's absence. He was sitting on the ground, his back against the seat when she fell asleep.

Now, he wasn't even in the building. Neither was Carol or Bob.

"What's going on?" Harley signed as she approached Nora,

Nora and Maggie shared a worried look before the older woman answered, "Daryl, Bob, and Carol are missing."

Harley's eyebrows furrowed, how could they be missing? Daryl was a hunter, a tracker, he wouldn't be able to go missing very easily. Did Bob or Carol go off and he followed them? Why didn't any of them let the others know where they were going?

Nora could see the panic in Harley's eyes, "Hey." She reached for the redhead's hands, making sure she could read her lips, "They'll be fine. It's Daryl, he'll be back."

Harley nodded, trying to stay calm. She was right, Daryl is the least of their concerns. It was Bob and Carol that they should be worried about.

A few of their group went out to search the immediate area, while Maggie and Nora stayed behind to keep the others safe in case someone tried to attack.

The door opened and Nora tapped Harley's thigh, letting her know that the others were back. The two women stood and turned towards the door to see Sasha entering the church first, her eyes on the priest who was standing at the front,

It was too dark for Harley to know what they were saying, but she knew by their body language that Sasha was speaking in an aggressive manor,

Nora stood nearby, waiting to step in if needed as Sasha, Tyreese, and Rick approached Gabriel,

"What are you doing?" The priest glanced around confused and Sasha got in his face, "This is all connected. You show up, we're being watched, and now three of us are gone."

"I..." Gabriel's gaze met Rick's, "I don't... I don't have anything to do with this."

Sasha took out her knife and Gabriel jumped back in defence, "Wait!"

"Sasha, don't." Nora stepped forward but Rick pulled her back,

Her brother approached her from behind, "Sasha, put it away."

Gabriel held up his hands feigning innocence, "I-I don't have anything... to do with this."

"Where are our people?" Sasha growled,

"I don't have anything to-"

"Where are our people?!" Sasha interrupted, demanding an answer from him,

"Please, I don't have anything to do with this." Gabriel begged,

Sasha was intimidating, and Gabriel was cowardly. If he did have something to do with the disappearance of their group members, he would've caved already.

He had nothing to do with it, which means there was a different threat outside their walls.

Sasha backed away and Rick was the next one to question the priest, "Why'd you bring us here?"

"Please, I-"

"You working with someone?" Rick raised his eyebrows,

"I'm alone. I'm alone." Gabriel insisted, "I was always alone."

"What about the woman in the food bank, Gabriel? What did you do to her?" He questioned, "'You'll burn for this'. That was for you. Why? What are you gonna burn for, Gabriel?" Rick grabbed onto the priest and pinned him again the railing, "What? What did you do? What did you do?!"

He let go off Gabriel and he looked close to burst into tears, "I lock the doors at night. I always lock the doors at night. I always lock the doors at night." He muttered, trying to keep his composure,

Nora took a few steps forward, curious about Gabriel's story. He may be weak, physically and mentally, but he had demons.

He was dangerous.

"They started coming, my congregation. Atlanta was bombed the night before and they were scared. They were- they were looking for a safe place, a place where they felt safe. And it was so early. It was so early. And the doors were still locked. You see... it was my choice. There were so many of them and they were trying to pry the shutters and banging on the sidings, screaming at me. And so the dead came for them. Women... children. Entire families calling my name as they were torn apart, begging me for mercy."

Gabriel began to sob, but Nora didn't feel bad for him. While many of their group had murdered people, the people they killed weren't free of sin.

He had caused the death of many innocent people.

"Begging me for mercy. Damning me to hell."

Nora was sure that before all of this, Gabriel was a good person. People went to him for advice, he was a leader.

But the end of the world showed everyone's true colours. While they were all survivors, they had different skeletons in their closets.

"I buried their bones. I buried it all. The Lord sent you here to finally punish me." Gabriel let out a sob as he curled up against the railing, "I'm damned. I was damned before. I always lock the doors.I always lock the doors."

Nora stared at him for a moment longer before turning away. Now that they had answers about the priest, they knew he wasn't a real threat.

But they also knew not to trust him.

The floorboards shook and Harley turned to see Glenn staring out the window, "There's something... there's someone outside lying in the grass."

Harley stayed where she stood while Sasha rushed towards the door. Nora grabbed her knife and stayed on the porch, keeping an eye out for any living threat while they moved towards the figure outside the church,

"Oh! Bob!" Sasha sobbed, kneeling beside him,

"His leg." Maggie gasped,

"Get Bob inside." Rick ordered, "We'll take care of them." He and a few others took out the walkers that were approaching while Tara and Sasha dragged Bob inside,

Nora stepped into the dirt, ready to take out a walker that was getting to close, when a shot fired and the biter collapsed at her feet,

The bullet came from the woods.

"Get inside!" Rick pulled her back and began firing his own gun into the darkness, "Go!"

Nora turned, heading towards the door when she spotted a large 'A' painted in red, standing out against the white siding of the church,

"Rick..."

They knew what it meant. That was the same 'A' that was on the side of their train car.

"Go." Rick urged her inside.

Abraham and Rosita took watch by the door while the others gathered around Bob, trying to get the story out of him,

"I was in the graveyard. Somebody knocked me out. I woke up outside this place. It looked like a school." Bob informed them, "It was that guy, Gareth. And five other ones. They were eating my leg right in front of me. Like it was nothing. All proud like they had it all figured out."

Nora felt nauseous. She couldn't imagine the physical and emotional turmoil that Bob must be going through at that moment.

Harley tapped the brunette's shoulder and signed to her before Nora translated, "Did they have Daryl and Carol?"

"Gareth said they drove off." Bob answered and Nora signed the response to the redhead,

Harley stepped back after getting the answer to her question. Where would they have driven off to? Why didn't Daryl tell her where he was going?

They were coming back... right?

Bob let out a grunt of discomfort and Sasha turned to Rosita, "He's in pain. Do we have anything?"

"I think there are pill packets in the first aid kit." She answered before moving to grab the kit,

"Save 'em." Bob called out,

"No."

"Really." He stared up at Sasha with a look of eternal suffering before moving to grab at the neck of his shirt. Bob pulled the cloth to the side to reveal a nasty bite wound.

Sasha's skin went pale, and her face lost all emotion.

But Nora knew what she was feeling. Her heart was breaking. She thought she found someone in this world who understood her, someone she could be with.

And now he was being taken away from her.

Her lips began to quiver as the two lovers made eye contact,

"It happened at the food bank."

Sasha nodded and tried to comfort him, "It's okay."

He collapsed in exhaustion, "There's a sofa in my office." Gabriel offered,  "I know it's not much, but..."

"Thank you." Sasha whispered to him,

Nora had to give Gabriel some credit. Sasha pulled a knife on him, threatened him, and yet the priest was offering whatever he could.

He was trying to make up for his sins.

Tyreese went to carry Bob into the office, laying him on the sofa and trying to keep him comfortable in his last moments, while Rick went to ask Gabriel about where the Terminus group was holed up.

Nora went over to Harley, explaining the situation since she knew she was out of the loop about what was going on.

Abraham stood in the aisle, gun in hand, "Time for a reality check. We all need to leave for DC right now."

Nora watched as Rosita stood and walked back towards her partner, standing with him,

"Daryl and Carol are gonna be back. We're not going anywhere without them." Rick stated,

"I respect that, but there's a clear threat here to Eugene. I need to extract his ass before things get any uglier." The man explained, "So if y'all won't come, good luck to you. We'll go our separate ways."

Eugene didn't move from his spot as Abraham and Rosita headed towards the door, "You leaving on foot?" Rick asked,

Abraham slowly turned back towards the group, "We fixed that damn bus ourselves."

Nora stood, knowing a physical confrontation might happen right in front of her. Abraham was a big guy, but Rick was ruthless.

She wasn't sure who would win.

"There are a lot more of us." Rick stated as he approached the larger man,

"You want to keep it that way?" Abraham raised an eyebrow in a threatening way, "You should come."

"Carol saved your life. We saved your life."

"Well, I am trying to save yours." Abraham exclaimed and Harley stood, grabbing the hilt of her knife, "Save everyone's!"

"We're not going anywhere without our people." Rick insisted,

"Your people took off."

"They're coming back!"

"To what, picked-over bones?!" Abraham questioned,

"You're not taking-" Rick reached out to grab him and the redhead pushed him away.

It began to get physical and Glenn got between them, "Hey, hey, stop! Now!" He pushed them away from each other, but they didn't break eye contact, "Do you really think that you're gonna be any safer leaving right now in the middle of the night?" Glenn asked dhim,

"Yeah." Abraham nodded, "Yeah."

"What about tomorrow?" Glenn questioned him, "We need each other for this. We need each other to get to DC. We can get through all of it together."

Tara stepped forward, "I have an idea." All eyes turned to her, "If you stay just one more day and help, I'll go with you to DC no matter what." She turned to Rick, "Okay?"

If they were to separate now, there was no way of knowing if they were ever going to find each other again. Anything could happen, just like when they were all separated after the prison. It was a miracle that they found each other, but many of them died before they could find safety.

"Glenn and Maggie, too." Abraham stated,

"No." Rick shot down immediately,

"Good luck, then. I'm not interested in breaking up what you have here." He glanced at the woman next to him, "Rosita, grab your gear."

"Abraham-"

"Now." His gaze turned to the mullet man who was still sitting in his pew, "Eugene, let's go. " The man didn't move, "Eugene. Move it."

"I don't want to."

"Now."

He didn't think twice, "Okay." Eugene stood and made his way to the door, with Abraham walking behind him,

"You're not taking the bus." Rick repeated himself,

Abraham paused, "Try to stop me."

Their leader began to approach him and Glenn pushed him away again. He gave Rick a reassuring nod, as if Glenn was asking Rick to trust him.

He turned to Abraham, "You stay... you stay and help us, and we-" Glenn motioned to his wife, "will go with you."

"No."

"It's not your call." Glenn told Rick sternly before turning his back on him, "You stay, help us."

Abraham gave him a small nod, "Half a day. Come high noon, we're taillights. I'm not waiting for the other damn shoe to drop."

"And we will leave with you."

"Twelve hours. Then we go."

Nora watched as Abraham walked toward the front of the church. He was a hot head, a 'my way or the highway' type of guy. She wondered how much they needed him, and how far he'd go for their group.

Should they just let them go?
