chapter 34
NORA HELD JUDITH AS THEY WALKED THROUGH THE WOODS.
She stayed next to Carl, just enjoying being with her family. Rick looked back at them every once in a while, a small smile on his face.
The group took breaks infrequently. Rick wanted to put as much space between them and Terminus as possible, especially since the smoke attracted walkers like crazy.
Harley stayed close to Daryl, the both of them not wanting to be far away from the other in case something happened.
She was exhausted. Both mentally and physically. Harley couldn't even remember the last time she had a decent night's rest. Probably since the prison.
Even at night, Harley didn't leave Daryl's side. He would take watch on the edge of camp, and she slept right next to him.
He heard a branch break to his right, and he quickly stood, keeping Harley's sleeping, clueless form behind him.
"'s nothin'." Daryl told Carol after a moment.
But the next morning, he went to search for the source of the noise, wether it be a walker, an animal, or a person. He told Harley to stay with the group, so he could keep his focus on the task at hand.
Nora gave her friend a comforting smile as the redhead watched him go. She quickly tapped Harley's shoulder before signing, "Let's go." And they continued on their way.
About an hour later, he returned with some squirrels hanging on a rope. Daryl had startled the group, causing all of them to aim their guns at him, "We surrender." He joked.
He went to the front of the pack to speak with Rick. The two women watched them converse before the both stepped away. Daryl walked back to reach Harley while Rick was telling the others to keep close.
"You good?" Rick asked Nora as she passed him, his eyes moving down to his daughter in her arms,
Nora nodded, giving him a small smile, "No complaints here."
Suddenly, there was a loud cry coming from the distance. Someone was calling for help.
Everyone stayed still, but Carl turned to his father, "Dad, come on." He begged, "Come on!"
Without waiting for Rick, Carl took off towards the source of the noise. The group ran after him, with Nora in the back so she wouldn't jostle Judith too much.
They came across a man on top of a boulder, with multiple walkers reaching for him. Carl was the first there, using his gun to shoot one of the walkers.
It got the rest of their attention, and they turned to the easier meal.
Daryl, Rick, Michonne, and Carol took out the others. They searched the area to make sure it was clear before Rick told the man to get down from the boulder,
Harley noticed the collar as she came up to stand next to Michonne, so she could lip read the conversation. The man was a priest.
He shook as he stood on his feet. Rick studied him for a few moments, questioning if he was gonna puke or not, "You okay?"
He held up a finger before keeling over and vomiting over their boots. Rick stepped backing disgust and shook his boots slightly,
The man wiped his mouth, "Sorry." He stood and glanced around at all of them, "Yes. Thank you. I'm Gabriel."
"Do you have any weapons on you?" Rick asked him,
Gabriel let out a small chuckle, his eyes darting between a few of the others before realising he wasn't joking, "Do I look like I would have any weapons?"
"We don't give two short and curlies what it looks like." Abraham commented,
"I have no weapons of any kind." The priest answered, "The word of God is the only protection I need."
"Sure didn't look like it." Daryl replied,
"I called for help. Help came." Gabriel reasoned, "Do you have- have any food? Whatever I- I had left, it just hit the ground."
Carl reached into his pocket and held it out to the priest, "We've got some pecans."
Gabriel took it with a small smile, "Thank you."
Judith began to coo in Nora's arms and she took a few steps away, trying to quiet the girl to keep her from attracting any more walkers,
"That's a beautiful child." The priest commented, but was met by silence, "Do you have a camp?"
"No." Rick answered immediately before tilting his head slightly, "Do you?"
"I have a church." Gabriel replied,
"Hold your hands above your head." Rick demanded and the priest listened before he began patting him down, "How many walkers have you killed?"
"Not any, actually." Gabriel answered,
Nora would be impressed if that was actually true. Not many people could get by without having to kill one of those things. So either this guy was really sneaky... or he's a coward.
"Turn around." Rick forced him to turn as he continued to pat him down for weapons, "How many people have you killed?"
"None." He answered before turning back around to face the group,
"Why?"
"Because the Lord abhors violence." Gabriel stated,
Rick stared at him for a moment before narrowing his eyes, "What have you done?" When the priest didn't answer, Rick continued, "We've all done something."
"I'm a sinner." Gabriel spoke, "I sin almost every day. But those sins, I confess them to God, not strangers."
Michonne raised an eyebrow, "You said you had a church?"
With that, Gabriel began to lead them through the woods until they reached a walking path. Everyone kept a hand on their weapons, prepared for any attack.
Nora handed Judith off to Carl before moving towards the back with Harley, explaining they were heading to the church,
"Hey, earlier, were you watching us?" Rick asked Gabriel,
"I keep to myself." He responded, "Nowadays, people are just as dangerous as the dead, don't you think?"
"No, people are worse."
"Well, I wasn't watching you. I haven't been beyond the stream near my church more than a few times since it all started. That was the furthest I've gone before today." Gabriel stated, "Or maybe I'm lying. Maybe I'm lying about everything and there's no church ahead at all. Maybe I'm leading you into a trap so I can steal all your squirrels." He turned to them with a smile, only to be met with bemused faces, "Members of my flock had often told me that my sense of humor leaves much to be desired."
"Yeah, it does." Daryl grunted,
After another few minutes, they reached a clearing, which held a small, white church in the middle. As Gabriel reached the doors, Rick paused, "Hold up. Can we take a look around first?" He approached the priest with his hand out, asking for the keys, "We just want to hold on to our squirrels."
Only a few of them entered the church, guns raised, while others search the outside. They scanned each of the pews before heading towards the two doors near the front.
The place was completely empty.
This man had been by himself since the start.
Rick whistled to gather them before they went to the doors, handing Gabriel his keys back before approaching his son,
"I spent months here without stepping out the front door. If you found someone inside, well, it would have been surprising." Gabriel stated,
"Thanks for this." Carl smiled at him,
Harley turned to Daryl, "So, is this our new home?"
"For now." He responded, strapping his crossbow to his back.
"We found a short bus out back." Abraham told Rick, "It don't run, but I bet we could fix that in less than a day or two. Father here says he doesn't want it. Looks like we found ourselves some transport." Rick didn't respond, turning his attention to his daughter, "You understand what's at stake here, right?"
"Yes, I do."
"Now that we can take a breath-"
"We take a breath, we slow down, shit inevitably goes down." Abraham interrupted Michonne,
Nora stepped up beside her friend, "We need supplies no matter what we do next." She defended,
Rick made eye contact with her and nodded, "That's right. Water, food, ammunition." He listed as they began to go inside,
"Short bus ain't going nowhere." Daryl commented, "Bring you back some baked beans."
Harley sat in the back pew, watching as the others began to settle in. Daryl set his crossbow down next to her before brushing some of her loose hair behind her ear. She gave him a reassuring smile before he walked away to speak with Carol.
Nora had set down her rifle against one of the front pews before turning to Rick, who was walking down the aisle with Judith in his arms, "How'd you survive here for so long? Where did your supplies come from?" He asked Gabriel,
"Luck." He answered, his posture still not relaxed as he observed everyone getting comfortable, "Our annual canned food drive. Things fell apart right after we finished it. It was just me. The food lasted a long time. And then I started scavenging. I've cleaned out every place nearby. Except for one."
"What kept you from it?" Nora asked as she took Judith from Rick,
"It's overrun." He responded,
"How many?" Rick questioned,
"A dozen or so. Maybe more."
Rick nodded before sharing a look with Nora, who shrugged, "We can handle a dozen."
"Bob and I will go with you." Sasha spoke up, "Tyreese should stay here, help keep Judith safe."
"That'll be okay?" Rick asked the larger man, who had been protecting the baby since the prison fell,
He smiled and nodded, "Sure. You ever need me to watch her, need anything for her, I'm right here."
Rick approached him, "I'm grateful for it. And everything else."
"I'll draw you a map." Gabriel announced, walking towards his office,
"You don't need to." Rick stopped him, "You're coming with us."
"I'm not gonna be of any help." He defended, "You saw me. I'm no good around those things."
"You're coming with us."
