chapter 29

IT HAD BEEN NEARLY A WEEK SINCE THE PRISON WAS ATTACKED.

The five of them were sitting around a fire, setting up camp by broken down truck that sat in the middle of a road.

Nora was eating a small portion of rabbit, wondering how many people made it out of the prison. How many people have died out in the woods of Georgia... how many of them were heading towards Terminus...

There was a lot of thinking going on. There wasn't anything else to do.

Who was she never going to see again? Maggie? Sasha?

It was a miracle she found Carl and Rick again, another when Michonne found them, but could it be done again?

Once they had finished their small portion of protein, Carl and Nora retired to the truck to sleep. Carl sat in the passenger seat while Nora laid down in the bed of the truck.

Harley was sat by the flat tire, leaning her back against it. She was slowly eating her rabbit, savouring every piece of it.

Michonne and Rick were sitting by the fire, speaking. There wasn't enough light to tell what they were saying, but she didn't care much anyways.

She tossed the rabbit bones a few yards away before closing her eyes.

She was grateful that they found the Grimes family and Michonne, Harley had been in the position before where it was only her and Nora had gotten out of their camps.

They have always been the last ones standing. Over and over again.

It was only a matter of time before she gets taken out, too.

She felt vibration under her leg and opened her eyes in time to see a gun in her face. Harley's eyes widened and moved her gaze to stare up at the greasy man with a beanie, who smiled down at her.

They had found them.

Nora let out a gasp as a hand wrapped around her ankle. She went to reach for her knife but was dragged out of the bed of the truck, landing harshly on the ground, "Don't think about it, girl." She stared up at the man as he aimed a gun at her, "Up."

When she didn't listen right away, the man grabbed her by the hair and lifted her up. She let out a cry as he yanked her towards the small fire, where the leader of his group was standing above Rick, a gun to his head.

The curly white hair, the malicious grin.

It was over.

"You screwed up, asshole. You hear me? You screwed up." The old man smirked,

Nora tried to fight the man who was holding onto her as she spotted a short, fat, balding man go for the passenger's side door where Carl was, "Don't!" Nora snapped, "Don't touch him!"

The leader smiled over at her and Harley, who were forced down onto their knees with guns to their heads by the grill of the truck, "It's been a while ladies. Today is a day of reckoning. Restitution. A balancing of the whole damn universe. Shit, and I was thinking of turning in for the night on New Year's Eve." He laughed,

"Let them go." Nora begged.

She didn't want them to be punished for her actions that happened before the prison. Rick and Carl didn't deserve that. None of them did.

"And why would I do that?" The leader turned to her,

"They had nothing to do with it. With any of it. I killed the man in the bathroom, and I found these people yesterday and joined them. They're innocent. Please, just kill me." Tears filled her eyes,

The man walked over to her, smile on his face. She knew his mission had come to an end. Something that she started nearly six months ago, is now finishing.

"Guilty by association." He whispered, brushing his hair back, "We're going to kill them, then finish what we started with you." The man walked back over to Rick and raised his gun again, "Now who's gonna count down the ball dropper with me, huh?"

"Ten Mississippi. Nine Mississippi." Tears fell down her face, there was nothing she could do, "Eight Mississippi."

"Joe! " A familiar voice called out and Nora tensed, "Hold up."

The brunette nudged Harley, who was still staring at their leader with wide eyes. The redhead turned to look at her, and Nora signed, "Daryl."

Harley spotted a pair of legs appear from the corner of her eyes, and she quickly turned her head to see if it was true.

He was already staring down at her when she lifted her eyes. It was him. The same long, dark hair. The same leather vest. The crossbow.

Her heart quickened and she had to  fight every cell in her body in order to not jump into his arms.

"You're stopping me on eight, Daryl."

He had to look away from her, as much as he wanted to go to her, "Just hold up."

"These are the bitches that killed Lou, Mike, and Johnny, so we got nothing to talk about." The man above Nora spat out, pressing the gun deeper into her skin,

"The thing about nowadays is we got nothing but time." Joe stated, "Say your piece, Daryl."

"These people, yer gonna let 'em go. These are good people." Daryl defended them,

"Now, I think Lou, Mike, and Johnny would disagree with you on that. I'll, of course, have to speak for them and all 'cause your friends here murdered them in cold blood." The leader replied,

"They weren't so innocent themselves." Nora growled, "They got what was coming to them."

The man above her took his gun and smacked her in the temple, forcing her onto all fours. Nora let out a small gasp as blood streamed down her face, dripping from her eyebrow,

Harley stared at her friend. She could only imagine what the men were going to do to them. Would they kill them right away? Or would they torture them first?

"Ya want blood, I get it." Daryl stated, shifting himself slowly to put himself between Harley and Joe, "Take it from me, man." He dropped his crossbow, and Harley struggled behind him, "Come on."

She didn't know what the conversation was, but Harley knew from Daryl dropping his crossbow, that he was offering himself up.

He was innocent in all of this.

"These people killed our friends. You say they're good people. See, now that right there is a lie. It's a lie!"

"No!" Harley screamed as one of the men shoved the butt of his rifle into Daryl's stomach while the other began to drag him back behind the truck.

"Teach him, fellas. Teach him all the way." Joe stated, "Teach them all."

Harley tried to fight as she was pulled backwards. She tried to find Daryl, she needed to help him.

The man pinned her to the asphalt and she knew what was coming. He grabbed her by the shoulders and lifted her up to slam her head down onto the road.

Her vision went blurry and all she could feel was the fingers pawing at the waistband of her jeans.

Nora was pushed onto her stomach and her hands were pinned behind her back. She couldn't hear anything as the blood rushed to her ears.

But she could see the man grabbing Carl, forcing him from the car, putting a knife to his neck.

Everything that was happening right now was because of her.

"It was me." Nora begged, "It was all me, please, stop. Let them go!"

The man placed a knee on her back and grabbed her hair, forcing her to look at Joe, "Look, we can settle this. We're reasonable men." He smirked down at her, "First, we're gonna beat Daryl to death. Then we'll have you girls. Then the boy. Then I'm gonna shoot this man here and then we'll be square."

Harley glanced over, her vision focusing on Daryl and the men on top of him, beating the life out of him,

"No..." She muttered, "Daryl..."

Daryl opened his eyes for a moment to see Harley a few feet away from him. Just out of reach.

"Close yer eyes." He told her, hoping she could read his lips in the dark.

"Don't worry." The man above her smiled, "It'll all be over soon. For them."

Tears streamed down Nora's face as she heard Carl's struggles. But she couldn't move, she couldn't fight.

A gunshot went off and Nora's gaze turned to Rick, who had managed to get Joe away from him. The two began to fight, and the man on Nora stood as he went to help his leader.

She was quick to fight back, taking advantage of the distraction. The brunette spun around and kicked the man in the crotch as hard as she could.

The man went down to his knees, dropping his gun as he cried out in pain. In anger, he reached for her. Nora crawled backwards, trying to get away.

He grabbed her ankle and she kicked him in the nose.

There was another gunshot, but Nora was focused on the man who was attacking her. She lunged for him, sitting on top of his chest and grabbing his gun, bashing him in the head over and over again.

She was enraged. To think these men could get away with such horrible things, they had no right. They didn't deserve to live.

Blood splattered across her shirt and skin and she continued bashing the life out of him.

While the man above her was distracted, trying to pull her jeans down, Harley reached into her bra and grabbed her Swiss Army Knife. She was quick to swing it open and sliced the man's neck open.

He choked on his blood as it flowed from his neck and onto Harley. She quickly pushed him away and laid on the asphalt, trying to catch her breath as his blood flowed down her skin and stained her top.

Once the man below Nora went completely still, she turned to the man who was on Carl. She tried to aim the gun at him, but with him and Carl rolling in the leaves, she was afraid of shooting the teenager.

She dropped the gun and reached for the large knife that laid on the ground. Nora tackled the man off of Carl and straddled him,

"No!" His cries were cut short as she gutted him like the pig he was.

Carl watched in horror as she murdered the man without a thought. She stopped once the man had bled out and crawled over to the younger Grimes, "Are you okay?"

Tears fell down his face as he tackled her in a hug. She wrapped her arms around him and comforted him as she watched Rick and Joe battle,

"What you going to do now, sport?" Joe asked him as they stood, his hands pinning Rick's to his side.

Nora's mouth dropped open as Rick lunged forward, digging his teeth into Joe's jugular.

Blood flew as Rick ripped his throat out. Joe began to choke on his own blood as he collapsed into the leaves and Rick spat the skin and blood from his mouth.

Nora clutched Carl to her chest, not wanting him to witness the brutal murder taking place in front of them.

Michonne took advantage of the distraction and grabbed the man's gun from above her and twisted it, pulling the trigger and sending the bullet into the man's skull.

Harley approached the men beating Daryl, their backs to her, which was their mistake. She took the knife and stabbed the first man the spine, causing him to cry out and fall to the ground. She swiftly stood over him and jammed the knife into his skin until he went completely still.

While the other man was distracted by Harley's attack, Daryl grabbed him and threw him to the ground before stomping on his neck.

He turned to Harley and tears filled her eyes at the sight of him. Daryl ran over and wrapped her up in his arms.

She sobbed into his neck and Daryl mumbled into her hair, "I found ya. I found ya." She pulled away long enough to press her lips to his.
