chapter 26
HARLOW SAT ON THE PORCH, OBSERVING THEIR SURROUNDINGS.
She was just waiting. For someone to come by. For Daryl to find her. He was a hunter, he was a tracker. If anybody could find her, it was him.
He made it out. There was no doubt about that.
The door opened behind her and she felt the vibration of footsteps on the wood beneath her. She spotted Michonne out of the corner of her eye and watched as she sat down next to her,
"I'm sorry." She signed,
Harley appreciated the prison so much. Most of the people there tried to learn as much ASL as they could... all for her.
"Wasn't your fault." Harley signed back.
"I should've killed him when I had the chance." The dark skinned woman responded verbally, and Harley watched her lips,
"Everything... happens for a reason." Harley attempted to speak as clear as she could, her voice scratchy and rough, "If it's meant to be, we'll find each other."
It was definitely a lot easier to say than to believe.
Nora walked into the dining room, where Carl was sitting with a bowl of cereal. It was a nice sight to see. Despite not having any milk, he was still sitting at the table, eating with a bowl and spoon.
She walked over to him and set down a bottle of water by his bowl before grabbing her own. Carl glanced up at her and giggled at the large button up she was wearing,
"Do you have something to say about my extremely comfortable and attractive shirt?" Nora smirked down at him, adjusting the sleeves on the button up,
"No, no, no." He grinned, "It looks great. Oh, you missed a..." He motioned to a button and she went to adjust it,
Once her shirt was fixed, Nora sat down and poured herself a small bowl of corn flakes, "I wish we had some soy milk." She sighed,
Carl raised an eyebrow and stared at her in disgust, "Seriously?"
She narrowed her eyes at him, "Yes, seriously. Have you ever tried it?"
"My best friend in third grade he was allergic to dairy." The younger Grimes recalled, "And every day he would bring this soy stuff to lunch. I tried it."
"And?"
"I threw up." He grinned,
Nora scoffed and threw a flake at him, "Oh, yeah, right. You're being dramatic." She smiled back,
"All right, all right. I almost threw up. But I was like," He feigned throwing up, "ugh. It was so gross. I mean, literally, I would rather have powdered milk than to have to drink that stuff again. I would rather have Judith's formula-" Carl paused, his eyes wide.
Nora's smile fell. They didn't tell her the proof they had that Judith was gone, but they were sure.
He was quick to stand, " I'm gonna go finish my book. I have a couple chapters left." He mumbled before walking away from the table.
She watched him walk away before turning back to her bowl. Time heals all wounds... she just had to give him time.
With a sigh, Nora stood up and went towards the kitchen, where she heard Rick rummaging around,
He glanced up at her, "Thank you." She gave him a confused look as she hopped onto the counter, "I heard him laughing in there. Almost forgot what that sounded like. I can't be his father and his best friend." He held eye contact with her, "He needs you. I know that's a lot to throw at you. So if you're ever feeling like you need a break..."
"I don't need a break. Not from him." She moved her gaze to the ripped up shirt he was wearing, "Come here." She sighed.
Rick walked towards her and stopped right in front of the brunette, who spread her thighs to let him stand between them. She reached out and began to undo the buttons on his shirt, "You're a mess." Once his shirt was off, she reached for the white one she was wearing, unbuttoning it slowly to reveal the tank top underneath.
She slowly made him turn around and helped him put his arms through the shirt before buttoning it for him, "We'll need supplies. I can take the others out and get some."
"I'll come too,"
"You were unconscious yesterday, Rick."
"I'm awake today."
"We need you strong. Just rest today." She told him, "There's always tomorrow." Nora stared at his torso, which was stretching the fabric of the shirt, "Looks a bit tight." She smiled, "I saw some t-shirts upstairs. I'll get you one."
She slid off the counter, brushing up against his abdomen. She released a shaky breath as she walked away from him, heading towards the front door where she knew Harley and Michonne were.
The two women turned towards her, "We need to head out and look for supplies soon." She signed and spoke at the same time,
"Do you know what the game plan is?" Michonne asked, "If we're staying or not?"
"Just for another day or so." She answered, "Rick needs to rest a little bit more. He'll stay back while we head out."
"One of us should stay behind." Michonne stated as the two women moved to stand, "Keep an eye out. Rick won't be able to do much fighting."
Nora nodded, "You're right." She sighed, "You two and Carl go scavenging? I'll stay back." Michonne and Harley shared a look and snickered, "What?" Nora questioned,
"Nothing." Michonne smiled as she and Harley walked inside,
Nora rolled her eyes before going upstairs, and grabbing a t-shirt from her bag. She stopped at the the bedroom door that belonged to a teenager, which Carl had claimed as his room,
She knocked on the door gently, and heard Carl's voice inviting her in. Nora opened the door and gave him a gentle smile, "You wanna go scavenging?"
He gave her a quick nod before setting down his book. The younger Grimes slipped on his hat before following her downstairs.
Michonne and Harley were waiting on the porch and the three of them joined the woman,
"How long you think you'll be?" Rick asked them,
"Fill a couple bags, shouldn't be too long." Michonne answered, while Nora signed for Harley,
Rick glanced down at his watch, "It's 8:15 now."
"We'll be back by noon." Michonne replied,
The older man nodded before turning to his son, "All right, you follow their lead. You understand?" He asked him, handing him his gun. Carl nodded and put the gun into his waistband, "Hey. Everything okay?"
"Yeah," Carl sighed, "I'm just... hungry."
Rick gave him a nod, "All right." He patted him on the back, "I'll see you in a couple hours."
"Stay safe." Nora signed and spoke before heading back inside after Rick.
Once she closed the front door, he moved to push the couch against the door once again. She handed him the t-shirt and watched him go upstairs to change.
Nora walked over to the bookshelf and looked through the titles, before picking one up. She grabbed a water bottle and headed up the stairs.
She found Rick in one of the bedrooms, staring down at his watch. She walked into the room and tossed the book onto the bed, shifting Rick's attention,
"Sleep." Nora set the water bottle down on the bedside table, "I'll be here. And they'll be back soon."
He nodded and she gave him one last glance before walking out of the room to find something to occupy her time.
