chapter 21
NORA BIT AT HER NAILS AS SHE AND HARLOW WAITED OUTSIDE FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING TO BE OVER.
If they were exposed, it didn't feel right to be inside the cell block. Not with Judith in there.
When the door opened, Nora stood and watched Daryl approached them. Well, Harley. He grabbed her face and began examining her, feeling her forehead, "Are you okay? Coughing? Sneezing?" She watched his lips before shaking her head. Daryl removed his hands and began signing, "I want you to pack a bag and go to the cabin."
"Why?" Harley asked,
"We've all been exposed. I don't want you getting sick." Daryl reasoned,
"But I've already been exposed. What's the point in quarantining myself?" She questioned,
"If you're not feeling sick, there's a chance you might not have it. If you stay here, you will get sick. I'm not taking the chance." He signed, "I'm not joking here, Harley. Promise me you'll go to the cabin and stay there until I come and get you."
Nora stepped forward, "There's too many walkers out there, Daryl. She won't be able to get past the gates without being surrounded."
Daryl moved his gaze towards the fences, watching as the walkers pressed up agains the chain links. She was right, there was no way she could leave.
They were stuck.
"Rick! Daryl!" Maggie called out from near the fences.
The fences were collapsing. The four of them sprinted towards the gate, grabbing the weapons hanging on the fence and began stabbing the walkers that were piling up.
"The noise drew 'em out and now this part's starting to give!"
Glenn, Sasha, and Tyresse joined them, but it wasn't enough. Nora rushed down further towards a free area of the fence and began whistling, tapping the metal to make noise and get the walkers attention. They needed to spread them out.
"C'mon!" She yelled, stabbing any of the walkers that came near. She slipped a little and Rick grabbed her to keep her from falling, "Thanks." She blew the hair from her face before looking down, "Rick..." There were rat corpses. But... only half of them, "Is someone feeding these things?"
"Heads up!" Daryl yelled as the fence began to fall.
They kept stabbing, but the dead walkers piled up on it, giving more dead weight, "It's gonna give! It's gonna give!"
Everyone pressed against it, careful of their fingers. Harley watched in horror as a walker's rotting skull began to split along the wire.
But it was too much weight. They couldn't hold it.
"Everybody back!" Daryl called out as he grabbed Harley's arm and pulled her back, "Come on, back, now."
"The fence keeps bending in like that, those walkers are coming over it." Sasha stated,
Rick glanced back at his pig pen, "Daryl, get the truck. I know what to do."
They continued taking out the walkers as Daryl got the Jeep, which was connected to a trailer. Rick put his four piglets into the trailer and jumped in with them as Daryl drove out into the field past the fences.
Rick was sacrificing his pigs, his farm in which he tried to hard to put together.
The life he tried to build for him, Carl and Judith.
Walkers began to leave the fences and headed toward the Jeep.
Nora grew nervous as the walkers got closer to them. She even winced as Rick sliced the piglets' legs open, leaving them for the dead to devour.
He was still prepared to do anything to save their home.
Once all the pigs were gone and they took out the rest of the walkers in waves, the group headed back into the prison for some rest.
Harley was in her cell, packing a bag. Now that the walkers were mostly cleared, Daryl wanted her to go to the cabin as soon as possible.
She wiped the sweat from her forehead before zipping the backpack closed.
Daryl tapped on the cell bars, the vibrations causing Harley to turn towards him.
"Ready?" He signed,
She nodded, putting the strap of her bag over her shoulder, "I wish you would let me stay here with you."
"I'm not risking you." He signed, stepping into the room and grabbing his bandana from his back pocket and grabbing her wrist.
He tied the bandana around her wrist tightly, double knotting it so it wouldn't fall off. She looked down at it as Daryl reached over to brush her hair behind her ear,
"Stay safe."
"You, too."
Nora was stood in the courtyard, waiting for Harley. They were both going to go to the cabin together, to keep each other company.
She spotted Rick in the field, burning his pen. It was useless now that there were no pigs.
Around his hip was a gun holster, his Python against his right thigh.
He had given up his peaceful farmer gig.
She walked down the path, squeezing Carl's arm as he passed her. She continued down until she stood next to Rick while they both watched the wooden pallets burn, "It was nice while it lasted."
He nodded, "While it lasted." He sighed, "The sickness... it's my-"
"Could've been from the pigs... but like you said, there were some walkers that were bleeding from the eyes. Could've gotten it from them. We don't know, Rick. None of it's your fault." Nora looked up at him, "But today, you bought us more time. Using the pigs to draw the walkers away, that was all you."
Rick looked down at her and Nora stared at his shirt, "That's going to be hard to clean."
He sighed before unbuttoning the shirt, wincing as he pulled it off and tossed it into the fire.
There was a sharp whistle behind them and they turned to see Harley approaching, bag in hand,
"Where are you going?" Rick asked,
"Daryl wanted her to go to their cabin. We were exposed, but haven't gotten sick yet, he doesn't want to risk her anymore than she has already." Nora explained with a sigh, "I'll see you?"
He nodded, squeezing her arm before walking away.
Harlow wiggled her eyebrows at Nora and the brunette rolled her eyes, "Come on."
The two left the fences of the prison and quickly jogged into the woods, hiding in the tall grass to keep from being seen by the walkers.
Harley glanced up at the sun, wiping away her sweat. It wasn't that warm yet, still cool enough to wear light layers.
Why is she sweating so much?
They walked amongst the trees, being vigilant. Their minds still flashed back to what happened over six months ago before they were with the prison group.
Harley lost her balance and tripped over a large branch. She grabbed a tree to keep herself upright.
Nora looked over at her, "Harley?" She reached for her to get her attention, "Are you-" She stopped signing when she spotted blood leaking from Harley's eyes, "You're bleeding."
Harley went to wipe at her nose but Nora shook her head before pointing to her eyes. Harley wiped at her cheeks and pulled her hand back to see red.
She was sick.
Harlow took a step back, holding her hand up to keep Nora away. She lost balance once again and landed on the ground.
The blow to her back caused her to let out a cough, trying to get a breath in. Blood splattered from her mouth and she covered it with the bandana around her wrist.
"Oh, shit." Nora hissed.
