chapter 09

HARLEY STOOD BY THE FENCES, A CROWBAR IN HER HANDS.

She was helping the others take out groups of walkers that were pushing on the fences. What she said to Nora the other day was true. One day, these fences won't hold.

But she was going to prolong it for as long as possible.

Harley was about to stab another walker when something caught her attention from the corner of her eye. She looked over see Daryl heading towards the gates.

She put her fingers in her mouth and whistled, catching his attention. Daryl stopped and waited for her to jog over,

She began to write on her notepad but he reached his hand out to push it away, "Sign it." He told her,

Harley paused before signing, "Where are you going?"

Daryl paused for a moment before raising his hands, "Hunting."

The redhead grinned, "You've been learning."

"Nora gave me this book." He reached into his back pocket and pull out a ASL book,

"Can I come with you?" Harley asked,

Daryl nodded and the duo walked towards the gate. She raised the crowbar as the gates opened and they took a step onto the road.

The duo took down any walker that came near before disappearing into the woods. The redhead followed the hunter silently, stopping and keeping watch as he bent down beside a snare to grab the rabbit it caught and resetting it.

Daryl tossed the dead rabbit towards her and she caught it with the look of disgust. He watched her for a moment as she stood there and stared at the dead animal before rolling his eyes and walking towards her.

He pulled out a thin rope and tied the rabbit's back legs to it before stepping close to her and tying the rope on her shoulder,

Harley stared up at him as his tongue poked out from between his lips as he tied a knot on the two ends of rope, making sure it stayed secured around her.

He stepped back, making sure the rabbit stayed tied to the rope before signing, "Ready?" The redhead smiled up at him, "What?"

Harley shook her head, "Nothing."

They continued through the trees, Daryl shooting or snaring animals as they went. Harley watched him reset the traps and with the last few she tried to do it herself, with Daryl helping.

By the time they got to the last one, she was able to reset the traps by herself. She was a little disgusted with the eight or so dead rodents attached to her, but at least there wasn't much blood.

She watched Daryl mumble something to himself, but she couldn't tell what he was saying.

A squirrel ran up a tree near them and Daryl was quick to raise his crossbow and shoot it in the eye. Harley walked over to the tree and took the bolt out, moving to tie the squirrel to the rope before a hand wrapped around her ankle,

Harley let out a gasp, using her other foot to kick the walker in the head. Once it let go of her, she used the arrow from the squirrel to stab it in the head,

Daryl jogged over to her, "Are you okay?"

Harley nodded, handing him the bloody arrow back. She shook the walker's hand off before Daryl grabbed her hand and suddenly they were running.

Harlow glanced behind her at the dozen walkers that were clawing after them. She gripped his hand tighter and kept pace with him.

She wasn't sure if they were running back towards the prison or further into the woods.

He came to a stop and turned towards her, "Fight." He signed to her before holding up his crossbow.

Harley took out her knife and got ready. The walkers were approaching fast, which was weird considering how slow they usually were.

Daryl shot at the first few, giving them a few more moments to prepare. Harley took a few steps to the right, separating from Daryl so the walkers would have to choose between him and her.

She tossed the rope of animals off to the side so she wouldn't get tangled up before raising her blade.

With a grunt, she stabbed the first two walkers in the head, taking them down with ease. When she got to the third one and stabbed it, well, its' skull was a little thicker. Her knife got stuck.

Harley let the corpse fall into the leaves and tried to yank the knife out, but her fingers kept slipping from the handle.

She let out a gasp as something ran into her and she fell to the ground. A walker snapped its' jaws above her, trying to get a bite of her flesh.

Harley reached out with one hand, searching the dirt for any weapon. Her fingers wrapped around a rock and bashed it across the head of the monster above her, splattering its' blood across her skin.

She pushed the walker away, sitting on it and smashing it with the rock until she was sure it was dead.

Harley crawled off the walker and turned to see more corpses walking towards her. She grabbed a large branch and swung it, knocking two walkers off their feet.

She stood, bringing her foot in the middle of the branch and pulled on one end, until it broke into two.

Gripping both ends of the broken branch, she kneeled between the walkers before stabbing them both through the head at the same time.

Harley stood and turned towards Daryl in time for him to take out the last walker. She walkover to the walker that hasher knife stuck in it and pressed her foot against it before pulling. Once her blade was freed, she walked towards Daryl and wiped the blood onto her jeans.

She glanced up at him in time for him to yell something. She couldn't read his lips in time for him to raise his gun and pull the trigger.

Harlow let out a cry as she fell to her knees and covered her ears as a dead walker fell behind her. A ringing infiltrated her brain, made her feel dizzy.

Daryl kneeled beside her, trying to get her to look at him. Her eyes wouldn't focus and she kept rubbing at the skin in front and behind her ears.

Daryl spotted more walkers coming towards them and knew he couldn't protect her and take all of them out, "Shit." He threw his crossbow over his shoulder and lifted her into his arms.

Harley pressed her face into his collarbone, trying to get rid of the ringing. It made her head ache, she couldn't focus on anything.

She remembered this happening to her all the time when she lived in the city. When cars honked their horns, or at school when the bell would ring to signal the end of class.

Daryl came across a small cabin and kicked it open. He set her down on a dusty couch the laid in the middle of the room before rushing to the door and slamming it shut.

He pressed himself against the door, trying to keep the undead from breaking in. He turned to see Harley still on the couch, whimpering and rubbing at her temples.

"Hey!" Daryl yelled, trying to get her attention, "Hey!" He whistled and she covered her ears further, "Harley!"

The ringing wouldn't stop. But she knew she had to help Daryl. She stumbled off the couch, and pushed her back against the door, keeping it closed long enough for Daryl to lock it.

He went around, closing the curtains until they were submerged into darkness.

They were going to have to wait them out.
