chapter 05

NORA WALKED OVER TO HARLEY, WHO WAS SITTING ON ONE OF THE BENCHES, READING A BOOK,

She let out a short whistle to get her attention and the redhead looked up, "I'm going on a run."

Harley set down her book, "Can I go?"

Nora shook her head before sitting down next to her, "Not enough room in the van. I'll try and find some pretzels for you."

The redhead sighed, "I want to go on a run. All they've got me doing around here is washing clothes."

"I'll mention your name on the next one." Nora nudged her, "And washing clothes is better than being dead."

"You should see some of these guys' underwear." Harley smiled.

Nora let out a laugh before patting her shoulder and getting up and walking away. Harley let out another whistle and the brunette turned to look at her,

"Stay safe." Harley signed.

Nora nodded before leaving to grab her pack. She met up with Sasha, Daryl, and Zach who were all standing by a truck,

"Ready?" Sasha asked her and she nodded,

"Let's do this."

Nora sat in the back next to Zach as she read over the list. Winter was coming up, and they needed supplies. Warm clothes, canned food, medicine, even fresh meat. They built a smoke house to dry out the meat to make jerky for the winter.

"So, Nora, you and Harley have been here for a while now. You guys get settled in okay?" Sasha asked,

"I've settled in. Harley, not so much." Nora sighed and glanced out of the window, staring into the trees, "She's always felt like an outsider with each group we've joined."

"I mean, I get it. She doesn't understand us, we don't understand her. We speak different languages." Zach commented,

Nora raised an eyebrow, "Is that what you think?"

"What do you mean?"

"Harley can lip read. If she can see your face, she can tell what you're saying." Nora smirked as his face turned white,

"Wait, really?"

"Why?"

"Cause I was talking to Beth about some... private stuff... and she was there holding Judith. Do you think she knew what I was talking about?" Zach asked,

"Yes." Nora smiled,

"Shit."

Sasha let out a laugh and Daryl smirked from the driver's seat. Nora sighed, "She does this for a while at every camp we go to. Don't worry, she'll let people know that she can actually understand them without a piece of paper soon."

"How many groups have you been a part of?" Zach asked,

"Two." Nora answered,

"What happened to them?"

"What always happens." She sighed,

They soon stopped at a small strip mall. Nora and Sasha partnered up to take the TJ Maxx and the stores on the north side while Zach and Daryl went into the stores on the south, "Hey." Daryl turned towards her, "If you find some pretzels... can you grab a bag for me? I told Harley I'd look for some." He nodded before him and the blonde boy walked off,

Sasha and Nora walked over to the large retail store. They knocked on the glass and waited for anything to come towards the front of the store,

"How long were you two out there alone for?" Sasha questioned,

Nora shrugged, adjusting her grip on her gun, "Months, I suppose. Kinda lost track of time."

Sasha hummed, "I know what you mean. My brother and I were apart of a group. Wasn't long before it was just him and I. And then Rick took us in."

The brunette stared at her, "Rick?"

She nodded, "There wasn't a council until few months ago. Before that, it was Rick. He led them."

Nora let out a 'huh' before walkers banged on the glass. She moved her rifle behind her and reached for her knife. She opened one door and they slowly trickled out.

"What?" Sasha smirked as they began to take out the walkers, "You didn't think Rick was just a farmer, did you?"

Nora stood and wiped her knife on her pants, "Hard to see him anything but." They stepped inside the store and went aisle by aisle, "Why'd he step down?"

"He lost a lot. It took its toll." Sasha explained as they came across some winter coats, "He started to change, and so did Carl."

"That's brave of him." Nora mumbled as she stuffed coats in trash bags. She spotted a small, pink winter coat meant for a baby. Nora made sure to put it in the bag to bring back for Judith,

"Some thought it was selfish." Sasha said,

Nora moved to walk down the baby aisle, searching for toys and other things for Judith, "He was their saviour, it's okay for him to think about himself sometimes."

Sasha smirked over at her, "That's a good way to put it."

After a few hours of searching all the stores, they filled the truck bed up with supplies. It was an uneventful run, which was good. It meant no one was hurt, they were in and out.

They arrived back at the prison by dusk. They got all the bags out and put them inside the prison to be sorted through the next day.

Just as Nora grabbed the bag full of baby items and her things, Daryl walked up to her, "Hey, um, I got this for Harley." He mumbled, holding out a bag of pretzels.

Nora smiled down at the bag before looking up at him, "Can you go give it to her? I would, but I was gonna stop by Rick's to give him this stuff for Judith."

Daryl seemed to hesitate and Nora smirked, "She doesn't bite." She walked off, heading towards C Block, "Much."

He found her sitting on a table outside the D Block, sewing up holes that were in jackets and jeans. He let out a short whistle and her head popped up,

Daryl sat down next to her and put the bag of pretzels in her lap. He reached for her small notebook that sat on the table and grabbed the pencil that was behind her ear, 'Nora said you liked them.'

Harley grinned and he felt his chest grow warm, 'Thank you'. She signed before opening the bag. She took one before handing the bag out to him, offering him some. He gave her a nod in thanks before taking a handful and snacking on them,

The redhead noticed him picking at the frayed edges of the holes on the knees of his jeans. She popped a pretzel in her mouth before writing something down on her notebook,

'I can fix those for you.'

He shook his head, "Nah, don't have to."

She watched the words form on his lips before writing a response, 'I want to.'

Daryl nodded, "Yeah, alrigh'."

Harley gave him another dazzling smile before scribbling on the paper again, 'I'll come by tomorrow and grab them. And anything else you need patched up.' She ripped the paper out and handed it to him, squeezing his arm before getting off the table and grabbing the pretzels and jeans,

Daryl watched her walk away, placing another stick pretzel in his mouth as he did.
