Prologue

Darkness. A sinister, choking state of mind that could twist simple thoughts into the cruelest things imaginable. It enveloped a small, brightly lit clearing, making once flourishing green shrubbery and fluffy white clouds wilt until they collapsed into a pile of ash. The process continued on, riding the small meadow of all life until it was a pit of empty darkness, a grey mist covering the ground.

Suddenly, a small light appeared, a bright flash minimizing to a small glow. Out stepped a small golden she-cat, dumbstruck as she dawdled through the endless gloom. Fear pumped through her veins as she looked around, puzzled at how she had gotten to such a strange place. Tilting her head back, she could smell rottening plants, but the mist quickly went up and into her nose, clogging her senses. Whiskers trembling, she slowly padded forward, her pads spreading over the cold, earthy-black ground.
Feeling a small breeze blow her fur the wrong way, she turned around, eyes widening with shock as they lay on two small black specks bobbing through the mist, gradually growing in size. Suddenly, she noticed that they weren't specks, but shadows, lanky and quick, haunches down as if they were stalking her. Paws trembling, she noted they weren't growing, but streaking towards her, their lithe forms quickly moving side to side, empty eye sockets facing her as if looking deep within her soul. She squinted, trying to get a closer look at their faces, but stopped when she saw them move faster, paws churning silently as they got closer. Eyes widening, she turned to dash away, but her paws were planted to the ground. Tucking her ears back, she cowered down, tail between her legs as blood pumped rapidly through her head.

She shut her eyes tightly, preparing for the blow. Her pelt fluffing out, she shivered silently; Why would StarClan give me such a horrible dream. She suddenly gasped. What if this dream isn't from StarClan at all? She flinched, eyes opening as a cry erupted from one of the shadows. Soon, the other bunched his legs together, ready to pounce on his prey, only to turn into ashas his airy paws left the ground. Shaking with fear, she saw a massive calico tom with broad shoulders lunging for him, pale green eyes burning with satisfaction as his claws ripped through him, his ashy residue blowing away as he ripped through them. She took a deep breath as the tension building up in her muscles released itself. She slowly got up, head perking up eagerly to thank the tom and to get a closer look at him when a breeze blew in, so hard that she fell over in a heap of golden fur.

She stayed still for a long time, heart pumping wildly in her head, groaning as pain streaked through her head. She could hear herself breath, quick gasps escaping from her throat. Her brain, muffled with thoughts, slowly began remembering what happened. Her tail flicked back and forth with annoyance, knowing that she'd have to get up. If I'm having a dream, I should at least see everything that happens so I can interpret it.
Slowly, she tried to lift herself up, but staggered back. Gritting her teeth, she tried again, managing to get herself in a sitting position. She studied he surrounding area, looking for the broad shouldered tom, only to see that he was gone. Thoroughly confused, she closed her eyes in thought. There has to be another omen. Alone once again, she turned, looking for another sign of life.
Suddenly, she noticed a black cat padding up to her, her ominous features blurring in with the darkness. She stopped a few tail lengths from her,  and the golden tabby could make out her burning yellow eyes, anxiety sparking within them. Vision still fuzzy, the she-cat tried to focus, but a headache burnt through her head whenever she did. The black she-cat stared at her intently, then spoke in a deep, ominous tone.

"Beware the heron's cry, as he is hidden within the stars. Only moonlight can reveal his sharp talons."

"Wait, but-" The cat looked at her, wanting to say more, but suddenly disappeared blowing away like the others.

The golden tabby looked around, suddenly afraid, knowing she had just received a prophecy. StarClan would give a prophecy... to me? A shiver tingling down to the tip of her spine. Why, out of all the cats in the clans, would they chose her? A wave of realization crashed over her. Because I was never meant to be a Warrior. Getting to her paws, she tried to ignore the stinging pain that burned through them. The strange cats serious voice ringed through her head, and she knew she hadn't had much time. Finally free from the misty grounds grasp, she broke into a sprint, yowling for a sign.

But nothing came.

Tired from running, her knees buckled and she fell on her stomach, her fur fluffing out as a cold wind blew in. Suddenly, she perked her ears as if she'd heard something.

Silence.

Even the breeze didn't make sound as it blew across her fur. It grew from a gentle state of peacefulness into a loud frequency, burning through her head, searing through her entire body. Whenever she thought it was over, the sound waves hit harder, bursting through her eardrums, reaching every inch of her small body, until all the she-cat could do was curl into a tight ball, clawing her ears, groaning with agony as pain seared through her, hoping it really was all a dream, a dream where her mother's spirit would curl around her, slowly licking all her worries away one by one.
