Chapter Twenty Four - Odd One Out
I don't belong here.
The palace was stifling. They all treated me like I was below them. Well everyone besides my mother, Loki and his mother.
I don't think they were doing it on purpose either.
I watched from the balcony as Thor Loki's brother, fought with a girl who looked to be about my age.
"That's Lady Sif... She's been a friend of Thor's for as long as I can remember." A feeling of familiarity washed over me as a felt two arms curl around my waist.
"A lady friend or a friendly lady?" I asked, as Loki put his chin on my shoulder.
Loki chuckled and my body filled with warmth. "It varies from moment to moment."
We both looked up as Frigga appeared in the doorway.
"It's time." She frowned.
"Time for what?" I puzzled.
Loki took a deep breath, "Time to face my father."
My eyes widened.
"Don't worry my dear, this time he won't be alone." Frigga smiled, extending her hand to Loki.
I nodded and clutched the railing of the balcony as Sif and Thor stopped sparring and Frigga called Thor over.
"It's time." she echoed.
Thor nodded, a worried look on his face.
"I hope she was worth this brother." Thor muttered, not bothering to hide his disdainful look at me.
"She IS." Loki replied, glaring daggers at Thor.
I crossed my arms over my chest and tried to school my breathing.
I watched as they left and felt the tension ease slightly as Thor disappeared behind the corner.
I let out an angry sigh.
"Hey!"
I turned around and glanced down at the man who shouted at me.
"Yes?"
"You're Sigyn right? Loki's wife?" The girl piped up.
"I am." I replied.
Sif smiled up at me and waved me down.
I walked down the stairs.
"Pleasure to meet you, I'm Fandral."
The man flashed a dashing smile, and kissed my hand.
"It's nice to meet you too."
"And this is Hogan and Volstagg."
I smiled and nodded at the men as Sif dried her hands on a towel and walked over to me.
"And this is the Lady Sif."
"Just Sif." Replied the woman good naturedly with a bright smile.
I returned it but I'm sure my smile seemed wan in comparison.
"You're nervous?"
"It's that obvious?"
"A little... But don't worry. Odin is always righteous in his judgements."
I snorted and the four looked up at me with confusion and worry.
"I suppose you think he was righteous when he chained Loki to a cave to have an asp drop poison on his face?"
Sif's eyes widened. "Lower your voice or somebody might hear you."
"So what?"
"So that's treason... you'll end up in the dungeons... or worse."
I bit my tongue as Sif nodded to the men and they left us.
"I heard about what happened." Sif spoke softly her gaze directed at my stomach. "I'm so sorry for your loss."
"How can you loose something you never saw? Never held?" I replied, blinking back tears.
Sif frowned, reaching out to clasp my hand between hers.
"I doubt anyone on Asgard understands what your going through."
I nodded not meeting her eyes.
"I feel like I ought to apologize for Thor. I can tell Loki loves you. In fact I've never seen him be so... Soft, with anyone before."
"Thank you." I whispered.
"And Thor tends to act like an Ass. Just in general."
I chuckled pulling my hands away to swipe my eyes.
"So, you are the only Lady in court I've seen fight." I responded changing the subject.
"Aye, and it was a fight to get here. But the Warriors three have accepted me as an equal, and I could not ask for more."
"From what I've seen They should be called the warriors four." I replied, with a nervous glance at the castle.
I wondered how it was going in there...
"I bet it's been a while since you sparred... Were you any good?" Sif piped up, following my gaze.
"I can hold my own."
"Lets see what you got~" Sif replied tossing me a wooden sword.
I snatched it out of the air and assumed the fighting position.
I watched her as we circled the platform, her eyes watching my movements sharply.
She was the first to move.
Like lightning her blade striked mine.
I fended off her attacks with equal speed and strength.
"You're almost as good as I am." she said flashing me a grin.
"Your cockiness will be the death of you some day~"
She smiled at me as I laid a blow on her arm.
"Ow! you got me!"
"Well don't look so surprised!"
She grinned and let out a guttural growl, swinging her sword at me.
I ducked and used my elbow to give her a good shove in the side.
She stumbled and I laughed.
Her jaw dropped.
"Keep up old lady."
She gasped, "Old?!"
I shrugged.
"I prefer the term experienced!" She exclaimed.
"And I'd prefer a bit of a challenge." I taunted.
"Oh you're so on."
"Come at me~"
She tossed the sword aside and I did the same.
She went to hit my face and I fended off her attack at the same time swiping her leg out from under her.
She hit the ground with a groan.
"Are you alright." I gasped.
She chuckled breathlessly.
"You're the first person in 100 years to lay a finger on me."
"Then perhaps you were getting a bit rusty."
"I'd welcome your sisterhood."
"I'd be glad to offer it." I replied, giving her a hand up.
