Amber walked back to the house but stopped seeing Isbelle barking into the cornfield. Something was going weird. She then looked to see what was going on. She then used her eyes to glow. She could see in night vision. "Hello?" She called out.
There was a rustling sound in the cornfield and a slight movement. Isabelle kept barking. Over in the barn, Merrill heard it so he put his boots on and came back out.
"What's wrong with Isabelle? Something's spooked her."
Graham walked out holding Isabelle's bowl and stopped seeing her behavior also. He was confused.
Isabelle barked and leaped at him, but luckily her leashed held her back far enough not reached Merrill or Graham.
"Amber!?" Graham called out.
No answer.
Amber kept walking further until she saw a strange circle. The crops were pushed down. This looked like some sort of prank. Suddenly, she noticed something infront of her across the circle. The creature seen her but didn't think she could see it because of her night vision. She froze in fear.
Graham and Merrill went in the cornfield. They weren't even half way to the circle when they heard Amber screamed.
"AMBER!!" Merrill called out as he and Graham both began to run towards the sound of her screams. They came to where they heard her scream but only the crop circle. No one was there.
Amber was running though the cornfield. Still using her night vision, kept running not stop. Suddenly, the creature jumped at her again and she fell back after she bumped into it. She looked up seeing this creature wasn't even human. It was an alien. She whimpered and pushed herself back. This alien had a large head. It's legs were tentacles like of a squid.
Amber was shaking as she kept pushing herself away from the alien. The alien moved closer to her. Soon she lifted her foot to kick it, but it grabbed her leg and yanked her over its head. She was hanging upside down now and above the corn stalks. "PUT ME DOWN!" She screamed. She kept screaming as the alien whipped her around and threw her across the field. She grunted once she hit a tree and the tree broke in half. "Oh crap, that's our swinging tree." She groaned.
Suddenly, another alien jumped at her. This one had a body similar to a human, but it's face wasn't human. She jumped away from it before it jumped at her.
She then held her hands up, "Stand back! I'm warning you!" Suddenly her hands held up a strange violet color. She then used one hand to make a throwing motion. A violet disk shot out of her hand and hit the alien. "Woe? I never could that before!" She said.
The alien groaned getting up. He growled and hissed at her then charged at her.
Amber slide her hands and a violet wall appeared shielding her from the creature. Once he hit the wall he fell back. "You seem pretty dumb for intelligent life," she smirked.
Graham ran back inside to get the shotgun, but Merrill ran into the cornfield calling Amber's name.
The alien standing over Amber heard his voice and turned towards it, it knew it couldn't get at her while she was using her shield so it ran into the cornfield to get Merrill.
"NO! Merrill! GET IN THE HOUSE!!! GET IN THE HOUSE!!!" She yelled. She ran to where the alien went and grabbed it by the leg with her powers and swung him over the field before it got to Merrill. She turned and looked for Merrill. She was now hearing rustling. She was now shaking. "S-stay back...Ah!!!" She screamed once she felt the figure bumped behind her but it was Merrill. She then broke down.
Merrill was in shock, whatever came after her must've scared her. He came to her and pulled her into a hug, "come in, we gotta get inside." He ran with her to the house. Graham brought them in once he was about to walk out, but he noticed Amber.
"Amber....you're hurt." Graham said.
Merrill looked and saw she had a huge gash on on her forehead. The kids turned away feeling nervous. Merrill set her down on the couch once Morgan ran for the first aide kit. "I-I...I-I...," Amber didn't know how to speak or even know what to say.
Morgan brought the first aid kit and Merrill set it down cleaning the wound gently, "this is going to sting, I'm sorry."
Graham made her a cup of hot cocoa.
"What was out there, Amber? What did you see?" Merrill asked.
"If there's people trespassing then maybe it's best you don't sleep out in the barn tonight," Graham said to him.
"Y-yeah that's what it was, some gang members attacked me." She lied. She winked at Graham, "I know you're brave, Merrill, but please don't sleep outside." She took his arm and squeezed which made him blush, she noticed the blush and quickly let go of him. "...sorry."
"But we saw tentacles," Morgan said.
Amber's eyes widen.
"Yeah and Auntie Amber was held above the corn," Bo said.
She sensed Merrill could've seen that due to her screams.
"Wild imagination...," she blushed.
"No we saw from the upstairs window," Morgan said.
Graham shook his head, "it's black as pitch out there, you couldn't have seen properly."
"The dark can play tricks on your eyes and your mind," Merrill then said, but he wasn't convinced.
"Yeah, it was pretty dark," she blushed.
"What about that purple light we saw by the Swinging Tree?" Bo asked.
"What...what purple light? You silly kids and your imagination." Amber blushed.
"But Bo is right. We-"
"Morgan!" Graham growled.
Morgan stopped. He quickly shut his mouth once his father snapped at him.
"Whatever you saw, I believe maybe it protected your uncle and aunt out there. Like a guardian angel." Graham said.
Bo smiled, "A guardian Angel?"
"I thought you stopped believing in them since mom died," Morgan said.
"Morgan!" Merrill said.
Graham looked down, "You kids need to go to bed, it's way past your bedtime. Merrill sleep on the couch."
Merrill sighed, "Fine, only for tonight though."
"Well...Graham he can sleep with-"
"No, besides I need to talk to you, Amber. I am not happy right now," Graham said frowning.
Merrill huffed and stood, "fine, I'll get out of your way while you have one of your little private talks. Anyway I can read the kids a story...," Merrill then went upstairs with the kids so Graham could talk to Amber. She shivered and looked up at him. He was definitely mad.
"...I-I really goofed, didn't I, Graham?" She asked nervously.
"Yes you did. Using your powers like that right outside the house, where everyone could see... and in front of....mwhatever was out there. If they came here for you, it might've made you even more of a target now."
"I-I had to protect you guys. One them was also after Merrill." She said. "Besides. I think whatever purpose I was brought here to do, I think it's time. Because...I saw my father tonight."
Graham was in shock, "you saw your father? What did he say to you?"
"He told me I am being hunted...years ago your father, mine and their friend that was here when I was left here, they fought a alien in Antartica, and he fears it's coming for me and for my powers they were gifted to me from my grandmother, who is an alien."
Graham's eyes widened, "so...you're part alien?"
"...yeah...does this change anything," she looked worried.
"It completely alters my beliefs...it isn't something I've ever believed in, aliens...but, you're still family to me, Amber. But we shouldn't tell the kids or Merrill. I don't know how they'd take it."
"Not even...Merrill?" She worried.
Graham sighed and lift her face up, "I'm sorry, but I think it's best we don't tell them."
Amber sighed. "Alright."
He patted her arm Goodnight and went upstairs. She rubbed her nose and went into her room, but before she did, she saw Merrill coming out of the kids' room. Amber stopped and looked down. But then she was shocked when Merrill pulled her hard into a hug and held in his tears. Amber then slowly wrapped her arms around him. She rubbed her face against his chest. She now expected it be a quick hug, but it wasn't. He was still hanging onto her.
"M-Merrill? Are you alright?" Amber asked softly.
"I-I will be..." he sniffed.
After a while he became self conscious and let her go, "I better head downstairs and let you go to bed...," he said, looking down, but he didn't move. He didn't want to leave her.
"Can...can you please stay with me?" She sensed he was worried about her since earlier.
"...uh, sure. Graham didn't want me to for some reason, but, he doesn't have to know," he said quietly.
She took his hand and walked him in. He forgotten how her bedroom looked her bed was big enough for two. And little neon dim lights hang over her bed. She sat on the bed and set him by her. He looked at her bandaged wound and held her face.
"I'm so sorry I wasn't there to protect you."
"But I tried to protect you, Merrill," she said, she then lifted her hand and squeezed his shoulder, "I was yelling to you to get back in the house...the ali...gang member was going after you."
He looked at her sadly, "you got injured protecting me? I'm so sorry...I can't believe you'd risk your own life to protect me."
"You're...you're my best friend. I could never let anything happen to you, Mer'," she said looking up at him.
Merrill smiled, "it's nice that you still consider me your best friend...I kind of expected that we'd drift apart, being in different towns."
"....," she nodded and squeezed his shoulder to comfort him. She then leaned close to him. She was about to kiss him, but she stopped and kissed his cheek instead. "And...I love you." She hugged him.
He hugged her back, "I love you too, big bird... you'll always be my little sister."
He said that to remind himself that he shouldn't have feelings for her, and there was no way she'd have them for him.
She smiled when he called her that. She missed that nickname.
They both laid on the bed. Amber looked at him who was looking up the ceiling looking at her glow in the dark planets and stars. She then wrapped her hand around his.
Merrill held her hand. He was happy but feeling awkward, "So uh, do you have a boyfriend back home?"
"...no," she said softly. "I have a friend that I know has a crush on me, but...he's not my type."
Merrill nodded, "what is your type?"
"...y-you wouldn't want to know." It was him, but she couldn't say that to him. She was too nervous.
"Why wouldn't I?" he chuckled, "it's not a blonde haired, blues eyed navy seal type is it?"
"N-no...ewe...I guess...athletic types...baseball players. I mean you taught me baseball since I was 2..."
He then laughed, "Sorry about that, I guess I brainwashed you a little. Actually....maybe Graham is your type, I mean, you did have a crush on him," he teased.
"I did but I moved on from him. Besides, I don't think...Graham needs a wife at the moment..."
"Yeah I'm not sure he'll ever move on," he said sadly, "plus, he's like a brother to you."
"Yeah...and still is. What about you? You have a crush?"
He blushed slightly, "well Randa McKenny heard I was back in town and called me...," he said this to cover his blushing.
"Oh...oh..." she looked down. "Well hopefully she is the one..." she sighed and rolled on her side.
"You don't like Randa? I know she used to be a cheerleader and had lots of boyfriends but, she seems more mature now."
Amber was just hurt, but she didn't show it, "no...no...she...she seems nice enough for you..."
Merrill lay on his side behind her and put his arm around her waist.
"I could introduce you to one of my single baseball buddies.... All though, I bet there's lots of guys in your town who'd love to date you."
"....no...no there won't..." she said.
She choked on her tears and didn't want to talk anymore. She was hurt. Merrill had a crush on someone, and it wasn't her.
"Hey, don't cry Amber...," he hugged her more tightly, "you are...so...smart and beautiful. They must be crazy not to want you."
"...," she sat up. "I-I...," she didn't finish and went to the bathroom.
Merrill was worried. He got up and went to the bathroom.
"Amber....did I say something wrong? I'm sorry, I-"
Just then Graham came out of his room.
"Merrill, what's going on?"
"N-nothing...Amber is upset and...," he looked down.
"What did you say to upset her?" Graham frowned.
"I don't know, Graham."
"Go to bed, I'll speak to her."
Merrill frowned, "you can't keep sending me away every time you want to speak to her."
"You've upset her, she probably wants space from you. Let me handle this."
Merrill growled and stormed downstairs to the couch.
Amber came out, but noticed Graham. She knew what he would want, "I can't talk please. Just everyone leave me alone!" She yelled and slammed her bedroom door in Graham's face as she cried.
Graham sighed and then went to bed.
Merrill was so mad with Graham, and frustrated with himself for upsetting Amber. He put on his boots and grabbed the car keys to his truck. He decided he'd drive into town and have a beer.
Amber noticed him leave. She was now hurt thinking she upset him, but she just couldn't tell him. She knew she was inlove with him, but what if he rejected her? It would be obvious. He liked Randa and only Randa.
