The Voice
"Hey, it's me again. I, uh, don't know why you can't seem to call me back. Maybe it's because you think you're punishing me. But this is too long. It's too much. And it's not about us. Something's happening in Beacon Hills, to the people here. I just... I just, I need to know everyone there with you is okay, so can you just, please, call me, please? One call, that's all I'm asking for, and if you can't call me back, then... I'm going to get my answer, anyway. That means I'm coming up there myself. If I don't get a call from you, I'm coming up there. So just try, try to remember, it's my pack, too."
Melanie, Belle, Liam, Theo, Mason, and Scott stood around the front desk of the animal clinic, playing back a voicemail off of a phone Scott and Malia found on a body from a pack of werewolves in the woods.
Melanie could swear on her life she knew that voice, but she couldn't put a face to it. There were only certain words the voice said that sounded familiar to her.
"You pulled this off one of the bodies in the woods?" Belle asked from one of the two spiny chairs behind the front desk, Melanie sitting on the other chair while Liam and Mason were sitting on the desk on either side of the girls.
Melanie nodded her head at Belle's question, her eyes stuck on her hands as she thought about the voicemail. "Malia did." Melanie muttered. Scott turned to her, nodding his head. "Yeah, there were six dead bodies, and one of them had no face."
"Okay, so the one with no face, you think that's the woman on the phone?" Theo asked, leaning on the front desk. Melanie's brows furrowed. She shook her head and turned to Theo. "That wouldn't make sense. Why would she leave a voicemail to herself?" Melanie asked, not expecting Theo to answer. She turned back to Scott, nodding her head. "It's someone close to her."
Mason started to slowly nod in agreement. He grabbed the back of Melanie's chair and licked his lips. "It's the same thing that happened to Aaron. It took over his body, basically stole his face and his DNA." Mason said, spinning Melanie back and forth slightly, making the girl giggle.
"Which means this body is just half of the problem." Theo muttered. All eyes turned to him as he looked up at Belle. "The other half we already know about, Aaron." He added, pointing to Belle since she was there with him when he found out Aaron was the anuk-ite.
"We don't know where he is, though." Belle said, shrugging her shoulders as she looked up at Theo.
"But aren't we supposed to keep both halves apart? If we know about one half, let's just go for that one, that's Aaron." Theo explained. Melanie looked at the grounded at nodded. It was a good plan. From the other side of Belle, Mason opened and closed his mouth, part of him scared to say his next words.
"I'm not agreeing with Theo, but I do think it'd be easier to track down Aaron over a voice on a phone." Mason said, not meeting Liam's eyes. Melanie squinted and pursed her lips.
"That's agreeing with Theo." Melanie said and Liam groaned. Mason looked up at Liam and Melanie and shrugged innocently. "Yeah. But I thought I'd try to soften the blow a bit." Mason tried to reason. Theo's eyes widened as he looked back and forth between the three younger teens.
"Is everyone totally shocked I might be right?" Theo groaned. He threw his hands in the air, pushing himself off the front desk. Melanie huffed, a small smile on her face as she brought her hand up to look down at her cuticles. "No, we're not. We just want to keep you humble." Melanie sang, making Theo roll his eyes.
"Thank you, Mel. Really. It's not like I saved your life or anything." Theo said to the kitsune, sending her a sarcastic smile. Melanie returned the smile only hers was genuine, making Theo roll his eyes again to stop himself from smiling too.
"Maybe we should be looking for both, Aaron and the woman on the phone." Mason shrugged out, siding with Theo. Scott watched the two closely before raising his eyebrows.
"I mean, since you guys agree..." Scott muttered, hinting that the two boys work together. Mason and Theo's faces dropped. Mason looked back and forth between Scott and Theo with wide eyes. "Wait, you mean, me and..."
"Him?" Theo asked, his voice loud in shock and annoyance. Belle snickered. Scott raised his brows at the blonde girl and smirked. He turned back to Theo and Mason and gave them a smile. "And Belle."
Belles smirk fell as she quickly looked up to Scott. "What?" She asked and Scott looked down at her, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Yeah. You three find Aaron. Liam, Mel and I will try to figure out whose voice is on the phone. If we find either half, maybe we don't have to fight at all."
"Stop the Anuk-Ite..." Melanie started and Liam turned to Melanie, nodding his head to finish her sentence. "Stop the war."
...
After Belle, Mason and Theo left to find Aaron, Liam offered the idea that they just call back the number that left the voicemail. Melanie furrowed her brows at her boyfriends idea. She crossed her arms and stood up since her legs were starting to get sore.
"What are you even gonna say? Hello?" Melanie asked, moving to lean against the front desk. Liam looked up from the phone and to Melanie. His brows were furrowed slightly. He thought that was a good plan. Why did Melanie sound confused.
"...Yeah..." Liam said, his eyebrows raised and his eyes big in confusion. Melanie frowned at her boyfriend just as the phone started to ring. Melanie and Liam jumped at the phone in Scott's hand.
Scott looked down at the phone before looking back up to Melanie and Liam. The two seniors looked at Scott expectantly and when he didn't move to answer the phone, Liam spoke up.
"Answer it." Liam yelled and Scott didn't move again. After a couple minutes, Scott just shrugged. "You're the one who wanted to make the call, you take it." Scott said, moving the phone closer to Liam. Melanie watched as neither boys moved to answer the phone. She rolled her eyes at them, if neither of them answered soon, the caller might hang up.
"She might hang up! I'll take it!" Melanie snapped, grabbing the phone out of Scott's just as the caller hung up. Melanie groaned, she turned to the two boys that were previously bickering before she redialed the number and put it on speaker.
Melanie was shocked at how fast the person answered. It barely rang once.
But she was even more confused at what the voice said.
"Beacon Hills High School. How can I-"
Liam leaned over Melanie and hung up the phone almost immediately. Melanie was watching the phone with wide eyes before she looked up to Liam and Scott. "It's someone at school." Melanie whispered in shock.
"We might know who they are." She breathed out. The wheels in her head started to turn before her eyes widened. She turned the voicemail back on and brought he phone up her ear to listen to it. She knew the voice. She was sure of it, but she needed to hear it one more time to now she was right.
She could hear Scott and Liam ask her what she was thinking, but she blocked out their voices and closed her eyes as if it would help her listen better. As she listened to the voice on the phone, she started to picture her teacher standing in front of the class. The voice matched. She was right
Melanie turned off the phone and turned back to the two werewolves, a small smile on her face. "I know who it is." Melanie said, a proud smile on her face.
...
"Are you sure you. heard Mrs. Finch?" Scott asked now that he, Melanie, and Liam sat in Roscoe in front of the school. Melanie was in the passenger seat and Liam sat in the back. Melanie looked ahead of her and saw the teacher in question leave her car and walk into the school. Melanie nodded her head, her eyes never leaving the woman. "It was her on the phone." Melanie said, turning her head to finally look at Scott.
Scott nodded, knowing Melanie was certain she about who she heard. "Okay, well, we need to get closer, see if we can get her to expose her supernatural side." Scott said and Liam's brows furrowed, he leaned forward from the backseat so he was more involved in the conversation.
"How are we gonna do that?" Liam asked and Scott turned to Melanie with a smile. "You're gonna do it." He said and Melanie felt worry start to pool in her stomach. Liam didn't even have to look at Melanie to know she was already starting to worry.
"What? That's not safe! What about Gabe? Or Nolan? Or literally anyone in there besides... Coach and Gwen?" Liam said, his words molding together from how fast he was talking. Scott sighed, turning to Liam with reassuring eyes. "We'll be right there with her." He said before turning to Melanie with the same eyes. "Just get close. Find out, and get out."
Melanie watched the boy carefully before she sighed, grabbing her backpack from the foot of the car and opening the door to get out. "You're lucky I like biology." She grumbled, closing the door behind her.
Melanie walked into her biology class slowly, part of her terrified to since people were starting to find out she was supernatural and because she had "fled Beacon Hills". Her eyes fell on Gwen first. She was sitting next to a girl named Rebecca.
When Gwen's eyes landed on Melanie, her mood lifted. "Mel!" Gwen cheered, going to motion to tell her to sit beside her before she realized Rebecca was sitting next to her. Gwen slumped, looking back to Melanie who was smiling at the girl. Melanie shook her head to Gwen, mouthing a "don't worry" to her.
She looked around the room to find an empty seat and her heart stopped when she realized the only seat open was next to Gabe.
She slowly walked towards Gabe who had not taken his eyes off her since she walked into the classroom. When she sat down, Gabe kept his eyes on her, but Melanie kept hers on the front of the class where Mrs. Finch stood.
"Welcome back." Gabe muttered dryly. Melanie let out an annoyed snicker. She turned to the boy with glare. "Bite me." She snapped before she sarcastically straightened up, her head tilting. "Oh, wait. Apparently I'm the one that does that. You shoot people." Melanie seethed.
Gabe's glare hardened on the girl as the bell rang. Melanie gave him a fake, sweet smile, turning back to the teacher.
"Phones away, everyone, and settle down. We have a long way to go to get through the day. We'll start first with..." Mrs. Finch said as she wrote equations on the board. She turned around and her words froze from her mouth when she noticed Melanie in the class. "Melanie. I didn't think we'd be seeing you again."
Melanie gave the woman a smile, keeping her eyes on her even though she could feel the whole class looking at her. "Can't let my GPA go down. If I want to be a doctor I've got to keep them up."
Mrs. Finch looked at Melanie as if she had seen a ghost. She nodded her head after watching her for a few seconds. "Yes. Well, Um..." She stuttered out before she blinked rapidly. "How do we determine the probability of an offspring having a particular trait? We're talking about, like, your eye and hair color..."
As Mrs. Finch spoke, turning back to the board, Melanie reached into her backpack and made a werewolves transmitter appear in her hands. Keeping her eyes on the front of the class, Melanie turned on the transmitter.
"Or... uh, if you have an extra digit. Your hearing." Mrs. Finch said, her words stuttering slightly as Rebeccas hands went to her ears and she ran out of the class. Melanie watched the girl that once sat beside Gwen leave before she noticed Mrs. Finch turn back to the class.
Melanie quickly turned off the transmitter and sat up straighter. Mrs. Finch looked to where Rebecca once sat and gave Gwen furrowed brows. "Where did Rebecca go?" She asked and Gwen just shrugged her shoulders.
"Her words faltered a bit but besides that, no reaction." Melanie whispered under her breath, knowing Liam and Scott were right outside of the class and could hear her.
"Three volunteers, please." Mrs. Finch announced, pointing to the three equations on the board. Melanie noticed that one of the equations had a chalk board eraser right under it and she quickly got up to go to that equation.
Gabe walked towards the equation she wanted and not thinking, Melanie pushed him to the equation beside her. "Move. I want this one." She muttered, earning a glare from Gabe. Melanie easily finished the question and as Gabe and another student worked on theirs, she grabbed the chalkboard eraser with one hand.
She stuck her other hand into her jacket pocket and made a tiny bag of mountain ash appear in her hand. Making sure no one was looking, Melanie pulled the baggy out of her pocket and poured it onto the eraser. She set the eraser back down onto the stand and walked back to her seat as Mrs. Finch analyzed her answer.
"Melanie, well done. I think that's the fastest I've seen an equation done in years." Mrs. Finch said and Melanie smiled widely, proud of herself. She shrugged. Whether she was uncover or not, she was going to make sure she looked good in front of her teachers
Once the other two students were done writing their response, Mrs. Finch grabbed the eraser Melanie had laced to erase the chalk.
Melanie leaned forward expectantly, hoping to catch her teacher in the act and proud to Scott and Liam that she was right, but all Mrs. Finch did was sneeze.
Melanie slumped, falling back in her seat as the teacher chuckled. "You'd think I'd be used to that after 20 years." She laughed out as she looked down at the eraser. Melanie noticed the woman's posture straighten and Melanie's heart dropped. She had been caught.
"That's it for today. Class dismissed." Mrs. Finch said, her voice low and Melanie had to admit, terrifying. The class all stood up to walk out as Melanie scrambled to get her stuff and run out of the class, but just before she could, Mrs. Finch spoke again. "Not you, Melanie. You stay put."
Melanie shut her eyes and stopped walking. She waited in the center of the room as the class emptied and once it was just her and the teacher in the room, MRs. Finch turned around to look at her.
Her lips were pulled into a line as she walked around her desk to lean against the front of it, her arms crossed over her chest. "I get it. I know what you're trying to do." Mrs. Finch said and Melanie stiffened. She looked down at her shoe and started to trace doodles on the floor. "You do?" She asked, not lifting her head to look at the teacher, but instead looking at her through her eyelashes.
Mrs. Finch nodded. "You're upset and you wanna get back at me." She asked and Melanie lifted her head completely, her brows furrowed. "Upset?"
"Because I stood by and I did nothing for what Gabe and Nolan did to Liam. I'm your teacher. I'm his teacher and I should have protected him." Mrs. Finch said and Melanie shook her head rapidly. "No! No, I mean..." Melanie looked at the ground and nodded. She was still pissed at the teacher for not helping Liam. "Yeah, but, no, that's not why I'm here. I know about your pack.
Mrs. Finch dropped her hands from her chest, her brows furrowed now. "My what?"
"I know what you are. You're a werewolf." Melanie said, quieting when she said "werewolf" incase any students passed the door.
"A what?" Mrs. Finch asked and Melanie looked at the woman with slightly large eyes. Surely she knew what a werewolf was. "A person who turns into a wolf on a full moon? You know..." Melanie said before she did an unenthusiastic howl.
Mrs. Finch watched the girl for a second before she rolled her eyes. "Oh, God. Yeah, right. And I can probably only be killed by a silver bullet." She said and Melanie shook her head, taking the woman's sarcasm seriously. "No, no, that's not totally true."
"Are you on drugs?" Mrs. Finch asked, now walking towards Melanie slowly. Melanie's eyes widened, taking a step back as the woman continued to walk towards her. "What?" Melanie asked, an uncomfortable laugh passing through her lips.
Mrs. Finch nodded, her head tilting slightly. "Well, I know you're living with the McCall's and Mrs. McCall works at the hospital." She asked and Melanie suddenly was hurt by the teachers accusation. "No, I'm not on drugs! Mrs. Finch, you're a werewolf." Melanie snapped, but the teacher continued to stalk towards the girl.
"How about marijuana?" She asked and Melanie took another step back, she shook her head wildly, hoping Scott and Liam come in soon. "No! You have a pack. You said it on the phone." Melanie snapped and she could sworn she saw a flash on sadness pass through Mrs. Finch's eyes. She blinked at Melanie before her eyes turned angry.
"That's enough. I don't know what you're talking about but you really need to go, now. You need to leave this classroom right now!" Mrs. Finch yelled, her voice louder than Melanie had ever heard. Melanie watched the woman with wide eyes. How is it that she has fought supernatural creatures yet her teacher yelling at her had been one of the scariest parts of her year. She was frozen.
"You have to leave my class. Go!" Mrs. Finch yelled again when Melanie didn't move, not even noticing Liam and Scott walking in from behind Melanie. Scott pressed play to the voicemail and soon, Mrs. Finch's voice echoed throughout the room only, it was coming out of the phone instead of her mouth.
Mrs. Finch straightened up, tears starting to grown in her eyes. "Where did you find this?" She whispered with a shaky voice.
