The Language Trick

"My mom's book club usually has more wine." Lydia mumbled as the pack, minus Belle, stood around the table, looking down at all the copies of 'The Dread Doctors'.

"Well, they also probably didn't read books that cause violent hallucinations." Stiles shot out and Kira took a deep breath, nodding. "That's why Malia's here."

"So none of us go running into traffic?" Melanie asked, a little too sarcastic for Stiles' liking, making him whack the back of her head.

"Or worse." Liam mumbled as Malia nodded. "Like what happened to Judy." Everyone slowly looked up to Malia, faces scrunched and brows furrowed. Malia just shrugged. "Chapter 14."

Lydia let our a small huff, picking up one of the copies. "Maybe I should have my mother read it. She might remember a girl with a tail leaping off the ceiling and attacking everyone."

"Yeah, if it works." Liam mumbled and Melanie nodded in agreement. Stiles turned to the pair, his face turned in confusion. "Why are you two being so negative today?"

Melanie turned to him, a small smile on her face. "Oh, we're taking over Belles lack of optimism since she can't be here right now."

Scott turned to her with furrowed brows. "Where is she now?"

...

Belle pushed passed the drunk people dancing around the dance floor as she looked for Hayden, griping the money in her hand tightly so she wouldn't drop the bills.

When she finally saw Hayden, she shoved past a group of boys and let out a sigh when she ended up right in front of the girl. Belle smiled as she put the money in front of Hayden. "Forty-three dollars."

Hayden looked back and forth between the bills and Belle, shaking her head. "I said I don't want your money, Belle."

Hayden turned to walk away but Belle quickly follow after her. "You said I owe you 200."

"Belle, just forget it..." Hayden happened as the power shut out, leaving everyone in pitch black. Belle could hear Hayden shuffling away and quickly followed after her until they ended up in the power room

Belle watched as Hayden struggled to flip the switch for the power to come back on. Belle sighed, walking up from behind Hayden, she quickly placed her hands over Haydens and pushed the lever up.

Hayden sighed in defeat, turning to face Belle. "You want to keep pushing me away? Go for it. You said I owe you 200. So, here's 43 more." Belle said before walking out of the club.

...

"Anyone feel anything yet?" Scott asked as everyone laid sprawled out in the living room. Scott and Kira on the couch, Theo and Lydia in the chairs across from them as Melanie and Liam sat on the floor, leaning up against the mini coffee table and Stiles and Malia sat in the kitchen.

"Tired." Kira mumbled

"Hungry." Lydia grumbled

"Bored out of my mind." Melanie whispered, mindlessly flipping a page of the book.

Theo chuckled at the three girls answers. "I think he meant the book." Melanie looked up at Theo and gave him a slightly annoyed smile. "Then my answer still works."

Melanie looked back down at her book and immediately grew confused. She harshly blinked her eyes as the words on her paper started to blur and morph together, making a small headache pound against her head.

Melanie slowly closed the book, putting it on the coffee table and leaned herself onto Liam, resting her head on his shoulder.

"You okay?" Liam asked, looking down at Melanie. The girl slowly nodded her head, her eyes falling shut. "Just resting my eyes."

...

The next day at school, Melanie sat alone in an aisle of the library, her knees pulled up to her chest as she tried to read the book but the words only blurred for her. Melanie even tried using her dads reading glasses when he wasn't looking but she still couldn't read it.

She groaned silently, her hands going to her hair as she felt a body sit down next to her. Melanie slowly looked up and saw a slightly frowning Kira beside her.

"You can't read it either." Kira mumbled, making Melanie groan. "I feel like I'm going crazy!" She slowly turned to her older sister with tired, hopeful eyes. "Can we try switching and see if it works?"

Kira chuckled, handing Melanie her book as Melanie gave her hers. The girls couldn't even look at the page without the words blurring, making both of them groan, their heads falling back on to the shelves behind them.

"Not into sci-fi?" A voice called out from outside of the aisle. The sisters looked up to see Mason. He smiled, nodding his head to the papers in their hands. "That's the book, isn't it?

Melanie looked down, slowly nodding her head. Masons brows furrowed, walking over to sit beside Melanie. "I thought you guys were supposed to finish reading it last night."

Kira sighed, rubbing her eyes. "Yeah, we kind of haven't yet." Melanie sighed, resting her head on Masons shoulder. "I don't know what's wrong. I mean, I can't... I can barely read it."

Mason squinted his eyes, looking to the girls. "Okay, uh... This is gonna sound weird but... Do either of you speak Japanese?"

"No." Kira mumbled as Melanie raised her brows slightly. "We're also half-Korean and we don't speak Korean."

"And I'm pushing a C-average in English." Kira rambled, making Melanie turned to her, her brows furrowed. "A C-average?" Kira gave her sister the side eye, slightly glaring. "Don't tell mom." Melanie nodded as Mason shook his head. "Okay, well... I've been doing some reading on Kitsunes."

"How come?" Kira asked and Mason slowly turned to her as if she were crazy. "Uh... Cause one of my best friends is one." Melanie put a hand to her heart, slowly looking up to Mason. "I'm one of your best friends?"

Mason chucked, looking down at Melanie. "Are you gonna let me finish what I was saying?" Melanie made a quick 'o' shape with her mouth, nodding. "Oh, right. Continue."

Mason nodded, looking back and forth between Melanie and Kira. "Do you know why people in Japan answer the phone 'moshi moshi'?"

Melanie nodded as Kira answered the question. "Moshi means hello."

"Yeah, but there's a reason why you have to say it twice on the phone. Because according to Japanese folklore, fox spirits have difficulty with language. And the way that you prove that you're not a fox, when you answer the phone, say 'moshi' twice. The important part is... 'Moshi moshi' confuses Kitsunes because it's a language trick." Mason said and Melanie's jaw slowly dropped as she looked down at the pages in her lap. "So is the book."

"Exactly, it's just one long language trick." Mason agreed as Kira's brows furrowed. "That's why we can't read it? Mason slowly nodded. "It's affecting the fox part of you. Confusing it."

The light above the three flickered, making Mason and Melanie quickly turn to Kira who immediately raised her hands in defense. "I swear that wasn't me."

...

When lacrosse practice came around, Belle went to her normal spot on the goal when Coach suddenly blew his whistle, stopping her. "Parker! Try defense! Mel! Be goal for today!"

Melanie's eyes went wide, turning to Liam beside her. "But I'm terrible at goal." Melanie whispered, making Liam chuckle as he rubbed her shoulder. "You got this."

Melanie let out a small huff, nodding her head as she walked towards the goal, her and Belle doing their handshake as they passed each other.

When Melanie got to the goal, she twisted the stick in her hands, gripping the handle tightly as Liam picked up a ball. Melanie slowly raised her stick as Liam threw his arm back, the ball whizzed towards Melanie but went right passed the goal, not even making it in.

Melanie's brows furrowed, looking to Liam. "Did you try to let me win?" She asked quietly, knowing Liam could hear her. She watched as Liam shook his head, making her sigh in contempt.

Belle was next. She quickly picked up the ball, tightening her grip on the handle and throwing the ball. Melanie gasp at how quick the ball passed her. Belle smirked, her head unconsciously turning towards the girls soccer team that was playing on the other side of the field.

Hayden's eyes met hers and Belle quickly winked as Hayden stood in front of her soccer ball, kicking it, watching as the ball whizzed passed the goal just like it did for Mel. Hayden turned to Belle, returning the wink as Liam watched with wide eyes.

"Are you really flirting with Hayden?" Liam asked in disbelief. Belle closed her eyes slightly as she walked towards the back of the line, shaking her head slightly. "I don't know what you're talking about."

Liam rolled his eyes slightly, following after her. "You know that's never gonna work out." Belle let out a dry chuckle, twirling the stick in her hand as she glared at Liam. "Wanna bet?" Liam shuffled slightly, looking at the ground before looking back to Belle. "That depends..."

Belle lifted her chin higher, squinting at Liam slightly. "If I ever get with Hayden. You have to ask out Mel."

Liams eyes went wide slightly, shaking his head. "No. No." Belle groaned as the line moved up. "Oh, come on. You know you want to!"

Liam clenched his jaw, taking a deep breath before turning to Belle. "Fine."

Belle smiled triumphantly, sticking her hand out for him to shake. Liam looked down at the hand before sighing, shaking her hand.

When he let go, Liam let out a stressed huff, picking up the ball with his stick and immediately throwing it, not even thinking of how hard he threw it until the ball hit Melanie's chest and she flew backwards into the net.

"Dammit!" Coach screamed as he, Liam and Belle ran towards Melanie. "I knew I shouldn't have the small ones be the goalies." Coach muttered to himself as he ran over.

Liam was the first to get to Melanie, quickly kneeling down beside her and helping her sit up. "I'm so sorry, Mel."

Melanie shook her head as she rubbed the back of it, looking up to Liam. "No. No. I'm fine."

Belle skidded to a stop when she got to the pair, taking a deep breath as she looked down at Liam with wide eyes. "Jeez, Liam, what's wrong with you?"

Liam slowly turned around to Belle, giving her a 'you know why' look, making Belle scoff. "We'll, I didn't think you'd be angry at our last conversation."

Coach finally got to the goal, leaning up against the pole to catch his breath as he looked down at Melanie. "You okay, Yukimura?"

Melanie squinted at the sun in her eyes, giving the man a thumbs up. "All good, Coach."

Coach smiled at her words, patting her back. "That's why I like you, Yukimura. You get back up again. There we go!" Coach said as he walked away, making Melanie a smile

"Does anyone here have asthma? Anyone got an inhaler?" A boy screamed, running to the field. Melanie, Belle and Liam's eyes went wide. "Scott!" The three yelled at the same time. "Go. Go. I'm right behind you!" Mel said, motioning for Liam and Belle to go. The pair quickly nodded, running towards Mason and Brett who sat at the bleachers.

Mason looked at the two startled as they looked around the bleachers. "Uh... What's wrong?" Mason asked as Belle groaned. "My backpack. Where's my backpack?"

Brett quickly grabbed Belle's bag from his feet and threw it to her. She quickly dug around the bag until she found an inhaler, making her turn to Liam, nodding her head and they went running towards Scott.

"You need help?" Hayden asked, walking towards Melanie who was slowly trying to get up from her fall. "Yes, please." Melanie mumbled, making Hayden chuckle, grabbing Melanie's arm and wrapping it around her shoulder as she had her follow Belle and Liam.

"I've got it... I've got the inhaler." Belle screamed as she and Liam ran into the classroom Scott laid barely conscious as Melanie and Hayden stood in the doorway, Melanie's hand slowly going to her mouth in worry at the looks of Scott.

"Scott." Liam mumbled as Belle put the inhaler in his hand but the two were only met with Scott wheezing.

"Scott, come on." Belle said, patting his shoulder but he still laid frozen, making Liam get right in front of him, glowing his eyes. "Scott."

Scott's eyes immediately widened, shaking his inhaler and taking a puff, finally catching his breath. He turned to the two and nodded. "Thanks." Liam and Belle nodded in return, relieved smiles on their faces.

...

"No, all I'm asking is how do you and I correlate to Flynn and Rapunzel?" Liam asked Mel as they walked towards the exit of the school at the end of the day with Belle a few feet behind them. Melanie rolled her eyes as she chuckled. "Because... the night of the party, I hit you with a frying pan." Liam's eyes went wide, turning to her. "You hit me with a frying pan?!"

"By the way, guess where I found this?" The three heard Deputy Clark ask Hayden as they passed her, holing up a bottle of pills. "In your jeans about to go into the laundry. Do I have to remind you, one bottle costs $200?"

Belle, not looking where she was going, accidentally bumped shoulders with the Romero girl, causing her to stumble slightly. She quickly turned around to Hayden. "Sorry."

Hayden shook her head, smiling. "It's okay." Belle chuckled, nodding her head and turning back around to catch up with Melanie and Liam, listening in on Hayden and her sisters conversation.

"Who was that?" Valerie asked, making Hayden chuckle. "Just this girl I know. Belle." Valerie laughed. "Just this girl I know. Belle." Valerie mocked her sisters before nudging Hayden's shoulder. "I see you blushing."

Belle felt herself smile at the words before jogging up to stand on the other side of Melanie who was looking down at her phone with furrowed brows. "What's up?" Belle asked and Melanie shook her head, looking back and forth between Belle and Liam. "Uh... Scott texted. Said I need to meet him at the locker rooms."

"I'll go with you." Liam quickly said and Melanie nodded, turning to Belle. "You coming?"

Belle looked behind her before turning back to Melanie, shaking her head. "No, I gotta do something. I'll see you guys later."

Liam and Mel quickly waved to Belle as she ran away as they walked towards the locker rooms. "I still can't believe you hit me with a frying pan." Liam muttered, making Melanie laugh as she opened the locker room doors. "I couldn't think of anything else!'

The two turned down one of the aisles, freezing slightly at Theo with Scott sitting on the bench, neither of them having the chance to talk with Theo much, didn't trust him. "Um... What's up?" Melanie asked awkwardly, her and Liam sitting on the bench beside them.

"Kira doesn't know Japanese, right?" Scott asked. Melanie's face scrunched in confusion, shaking her head. "No. Neither of us do. Why?"

Scott sighed, turning to Theo. "Because Theo heard her speaking Japanese last night." Melanie quickly turned to Theo, her eyes wide. "You heard her speaking Japanese?"

Theo sighed, pulling his phone out of his pocket. "I didn't just hear it." He quickly lifted his phone in the air so the three could hear Kira mumbling Japanese in her sleep. "That's what she said at the club." Scott mumbled in realization.

Theo sighed, putting his phone back in his pocket. "I found a website that can translate it. It means, roughly... 'I am the messenger of death.'"

"Does it get worse?" Mel asked and Scott looked down, clearing his throat. "Uh... Yeah, something... Something's happening to her. She's got this aura around her. It's hard to explain. Um... It's supposed to be part of her, but now it looks different. Like... look... Mel, stand up." Scott said. Melanie's eyes went wide slightly but she stood up nonetheless. Scott nodded, turning to Liam and Theo. "Look at her with your other eyes."

Melanie watched as Theo and Liam's eyes shined a bright yellow while Scott's turned red. Scott pointed at her. "See how her fox is the same height as her?" Scott turned around, Liam and Theo nodding as they looked at the bright green outline of a fox around Melanie. "Kira's is just about a foot taller than her. Like... Almost like it's taking over." Scott explained.

"I don't know. Something's happening. And to be honest..." Scott stopped himself, worrying Melanie as she took a step closer to him. "What?"

Scott slowly turned to Melanie, sighing. "I don't know if I can trust her anymore."

Melanie felt her breath hitch in her throat as the three boys looked around the room as if they were looking for something, confusing her.

"I hear it, too." Theo mumbled. Melanie slowly leaned towards Liam's ear. "Hear what?" Liam leaned towards her, still looking around. "It's water."

"It's coming from the basement." Scott mumbled.

...

Belle quickly walked over to the bar of the club, already knowing Hayden would be there, she slammed the two bills on the table to get the girls attention. "It's $25."

Hayden groaned, walking away with a tray of empty drinks to wash. "Belle, please stop." Belle pulled her lips into a line, shaking her head. "Nope. I promised I'd pay you back."

Hayden put the dishes in the sink, groaning slightly. "It doesn't matter now. And Phil takes half of it anyway." Belle shook her head, taking a step closer to Hayden.
"I know it's for your medication. So please, just take the money."

Hayden instantly shook her head, turning around to have her back press the sink counter as she looked to Belle. "No. It wasn't your fault. It's for my cophenolate. It's for a kidney transplant I had a few years ago. I work here so my sister doesn't have to pay for all of it. Now, could you just forget about it?"

Belle looked at Hayden for a second before shaking her head. "I'll make it back somehow." After a few seconds, Hayden sighed, knowing she wouldn't get Belle to back down. The blonde looked behind her to Hayden's manager before turning back to Hayden. "Does Phil really take half?"

Hayden scoffed out a laugh, continuing to wash the glasses. "And never stops bragging about it. Just listen to him."

Belle squinted slightly, tilting her head to hear the man. "It's not like they're going to do anything. They're all under the table and too young to be selling alcohol anyway." Phil said and Belle quickly noticed Hayden scoff at his words, making Belles brows furrow on how Hayden could hear him from so far away.

She looked down to the table, slowly reaching for a glow stick as she looked back to Hayden. "Hayden. Can I ask you to do something for me?" Belle asked quietly, making Hayden's brows furrow, turning to her. "What?"

"Close your eyes." Belle quickly said, making Hayden laugh. "What?" Belle shut her eyes slightly. "Please? Just for two seconds. I swear, I am not gonna do anything."

"Why?" Hayden asked and Belle shook her head. "All you have to do is close your eyes for three seconds." "You said two." Hayden quickly said, making Belle laugh. "Okay, well, three. Three at the most."

Hayden looked at Belle for a few seconds before sighing, shutting her eyes with a small smile on her face. "This is stupid." Hayden muttered as Belle cracked the glow stick. "Just one second."

She quickly brought the glow stick up to Hayden's face and sighed. "Okay. Open them."

Hayden obliged, her eyes reflecting the glow stick when her eyes opened, making Belles eyes widen.

...

"Where's Kira?" Melanie asked Malia as she came down the stairs, Melanie, Liam, Theo and Scott waiting for her.

"Still at the library. Stiles and Lydia are at the hospital." Malia said as they all started to walk down the hall. "Doing what?" Liam asked, turning to Malia from the other side of Melanie.

Malia turned to him, shaking her head slightly. "Lydia's trying to figure out what happened during her surgery."  "How long are they going to be there?" Scott asked as Melanies phone buzzed. She quickly pulled out her phone as Malia answered Scott's question. "They said they're just waiting for the power to come back on."

Melanie felt her steps slow as she read Belles text, the four other teens noticing Melanie stopped. Scott and Liam were the first ones to take in her shocked expression. "What? What's wrong?" Scott asked as Liam walked towards her.

Melanie looked at the three older teens, shaking her head as she grabbed Liams hand. "Uh... nothing. We gotta go."

With that, Melanie squeezed Liams hand tighter, running the opposite way they were once going as they ran to the bar to meet Belle and Hayden.
