I Can Heal You

Melanie really needed to learn to silence her phone at night.

It was 1am when Liam called Melanie phone asking to come to the school to study for a bio test and it was 3am when Scott picked her up to go back home. That was when she put her phone on silent.

When they pulled into the driveway, Mel's eyes were barely open. She slowly got out of the car, almost zombie-like.

As she trudged to the front door Brett's sister, Lori, came out from behind the bushes. Melanie let out a scream, almost falling over. Scott came running over from the other side of the car, skidding to a stop when he saw Lori.

"Lori..." Melanie whispered, going to grab the girls hands but noticed a bloody lacrosse stick in one of them. Melanie's heartbeat picked up as she grabbed the hand that wasn't hold the stick.

Lori's eyes were filled with tears and Melanie squeezed her hand a bit tighter. "I found this. It's Brett's, and he's missing, and I heard gunshots." Lori said, her voice shaky.

Scott took the lacrosse stick from Lori and furrowed his brows before he looked back up at Lori. "How do you know this is his blood?"

"Because he's her brother, Scott." Melanie said, looking up at the boy and Lori nodded. "It's mine, too."

...

Scott had called Malia while Melanie called Liam for backup. The five of them headed out into the woods to look for any sign of Brett.

When Liam and Melanie split off from the rest of the group, Melanie felt something hard under her foot. Melanie looked down and moved her foot, her eyes falling on a cell phone. As Melanie bent down to grab the phone, Liam noticed that tree closest to them had been shot at with an arrow.

Liam made a small "pssst" noice to catch Melanie's attention and when she saw the stick, she turned to the direction of Scott, Malia, and Lori. "Here!" Mel yelled.

Melanie stood up when she heard the the three come up behind her. She handed the phone to Lori as Liam looked in the direction the arrow came from before turning to Scott. "I think he set a trap."

Scott smiled, nodding his head. "He's fighting back."

"And now we know he's alive." Lori quietly cheered as she walked towards the tree. She grabbed the arrow and pulled it out of the wood. She sighed at the sight of the blood covering the end of it. "But he's still hurt. We need to find him, he needs to know we're here."

Lori turned around, ready to roar, but Malia put a hand up, stopping her. "You want the hunter to know we're here, too?"

"He's new. We can take him." Liam said, but Malia shook her head again, this time, only watching Scott. "What if Brett howls back? He'll lead the hunter right to him."

Scott pursed his lips at Malia's scenario. "No, we could find him first. There's no human that can track sounds faster than we can. And we've got the advantage,  we've done this before."

Liam took the arrow from Lori's hands and furrowed his brows, turning to Lori. "How come I can't catch his scent?" He asked as Melanie looked around the ground. Her eyes landing on a small trail of blood.

"He's masking it." Lori answered as Melanie started to follow the trail. "He went this way."

...

The trail lasted for about a mile before it stopped.

"Uh, maybe he just stopped bleeding." Scott suggested and Liam rolled his eyes as his alpha trying to lighten the mood. "God, I think we should split up. Lori, Mel and I go this way, you guys go that way."

"Or maybe we go in five directions?" Lori added and Melanie looked at the two of them like they were crazy. Her jaw dropped and her eyes wide. "It's like you two have never seen a horror movie." She scoffed out before crossing her arms. "We should stick together."

"We have the advantage, it's five against one." Malia agreed, adding onto Melanie's reasoning. Melanie gave her boyfriend a proud, cocky smirk. She titled her head to the side as Liam rolled his eyes, holding back a smile at Melanie.

"It's one hunter, one amateur who doesn't know what they're doing." Liam defended. Malia groaned, looking down at Scott who was on the floor, looking at the footprints.

"Scott?" Malia asked, wanting him to be the tie breaker.

Scott didn't answer Malia, his eyes on the prints in front of him. "There's another." He muttered and Melanie leaned closer, barely able to hear him. "Two of them?" She asked and Scott nodded, looking up at her. "Maybe more."

Malia turned to Liam with raised brows. "Still wanna split up?"

Before Liam could answer. Lori ran off a couple feet away to a small tower of stacked rocks. She let out a small laugh and turned back to the other four. "Rock balancing. Satomi taught us. It's him, and I know where he's going."

...

Lori led the group trough the Argent tunnels and she seemed pretty confident in where she was going before her eyes spotted a pool of blood on the floor and she skidded to a stop. She knelt down and shook her head at the black blood. "He's been poisoned. That's why he's not healing. What if he only has a few hours to live?"

"Well, if we howl, we can find him." Liam suggested and Melanie put her hand on Liam's should. "That's too risky. This place already echoes enough."

"Who cares about the risk? He could be dying." Lori snapped at Melanie.

Mel was taken aback by Lori's snap, but she didn't blame her, she knows the girl is worried about Brett.

"I need him to know that I'm here, that I'm coming for him." Lori said, her eyes pleading. Melanie almost caved into the literal puppy dog eyes Lori was giving and even though she stopped herself, Liam didn't.

"Yeah, Lori's right. He has to know we're here." Liam said before turning down to face the end of the tunnel. Mel knew what Liam was about to do. She tried to yell to stop him from roaring but it was too late. Liams roar echoed and shook throughout the tunnel.

No answer.

"Maybe, maybe, he didn't hear us." Liam shrugged, but Melanie shook her head, walking further down the tunnel. "Maybe, he can't answer."

Scott watched Melanie walk down the tunnel and his eyes caught something shiny. A string. A trap that Melanie was about to step in. Scott ran up to the girl, trying to stop her from stepping on the string.

"Mel, no!" Scott yelled, but it was too late, Mel had stepped on the booby trap. A steel rod whizzed passed Melanie, lodging itself right into Scott's stomach.

"Shit!" Melanie cursed, running towards Scotts as he fell into the wall. Melanie and Malia helped him sit down. As she looked at the rod. Melanie's chest started to tighten with guilt. "Scott, are you okay?"

Scott's breathing already started to waver as he shook his head. "They knew we were coming." He muttered and Malia shushed him. "Don't talk, just heal, and let us figure this out. Mel, help him heal."

Melanie nodded, moving over to get a good angle of the wound. "Scoot." She told Malia, the girl quickly scooting over. Melanie looked down at the arrow before looking up at Scott. Just as she was about to ask if he was ready for her to rip it out he nodded. Mel pressed her lips into a line and pulled the arrow out.

Scott groaned in pain as Melanie started to heal him. Malia sighed in annoyance. "They've been a step ahead of us the whole time."

"I'm sorry, but I can't wait around. We have to go." Lori said, her very shaky. Malia turned to the girl, shaking her head. "We still have the numbers, four-to-two. We're faster, and we're stronger. They're smarter."

"I don't care who's smarter or faster or whatever, my brother's going to die." Lori snapped as Mels felt herself start to grow a bit faint from all the energy she was using to heal Scott.

She felt a hand on her shoulder and used even more strength to open her eyes. Scott was looking at her with dad and equally as weak eyes, shaking his head. "Stop. It's okay. I'll be okay."

Melanie slowly stopped healing Scott, her hands going to her head. "Something's not right. That arrow, the trip wire, the poison. These aren't amateurs."

"But they've never fought us before." Liam said and Scott took a deep breath. "And you've never fought hunters, Liam. We need to stick together."

"I need to go." Lori pleaded. Scott shook his head. "No, you're not going alone."

"I'll go with her." Melanie blurted. She knew how Lori was feeling. If it was Kira that needed help or Scott or hell even Stiles, she wouldn't waste a second. They're her family.

Scott tilted his head at the girl. He knew what was going on in her head. He sees her as a sister. And he knows that feeling is reciprocated. "Mel, you don't know who they are or what they're capable of."

"Look, I know who we are. We never give up, especially when it's someone innocent, when it's someone alone, when it's one of our friends." Melanie said, she didn't mean to but she felt herself beg Scott. She didn't even realize her and Brett were that close, but she felt like she was losing more friends. More family.

"Okay, go." Scott said as he turned his head to Liam. "All of you, I'll catch up."

Liam nodded and grabbed Melanie's hand to pull her up as Lori ran down the tunnel, the two of them following after her.

...

After Liam left the study session, Belle, Mason, and Corey decided to stay at school and get as much studying they could get in for the night. Belle was sitting across from Mason and Corey at the library table when she felt someone walk up to the empty seat next to her.

"Hey, Nolan." Belle said, smiling up at the boy. Mason and Corey looked up at Belles words, both of them giving a smile to him as well.

"Studying for our bio test?" Corey asked and Nolan chuckled, his heartbeat picking up. "Trying. Yeah." Nolan said, his voice shaky.

Belle's brow lifted at how fast Nolan's heart was beating but Nolan didn't notice her look and continued to speak. "Um... trying to understand how organisms evolve and change. Like, how a fish can turn into an alligator."

Mason shook his head, a small laugh leaving his lips. "Uh, alligators aren't fish, they're reptiles. They, they hatch from fertilized eggs..."

Corey turned to Belle across from him, both of them sharing a look. Even without hearing his heartbeat, Corey knew something was off with Nolan. Corey shook his head and looked back up at Nolan. "And isn't the test on DNA versus RNA?"

Nolan didn't even acknowledge Corey, turning to look down at Belle, an eerie smile turning on his face. "Do you think DNA changes?"

An uncomfortable laugh left Belle's lips, her eyes staying on Nolan, almost too unnerved to look away. "If it's damaged, yeah. A change in DNA could cause cancer."

"So organisms can change, organisms change. They can change right in front of your eyes..." Nolan mumbled. The three couldn't tell if he was talking to them or himself.

"I don't think this is on the test." Belle quietly said, finally looking away from Nolan to look at Corey and Mason. Both boys could tell Belle was very uncomfortable, especially since Nolan was closer to her.

Nolan hastily sat down in the seat next to Belle, leaning in towards the table closer to the three. "Yeah. I wonder if organisms can change, and then change back. Like, they can be two things at once."

Belles brows furrowed, an uncomfortable laugh leaving her lips. "Uh, parrotfish are protogynous hermaphrodites, both male and female."

Corey let out an identical laugh to Belle's shaking his head as he looked up at Nolan. "That's definitely not on the test, or any high school test."

"I wonder if any of us have changed. And if we did, would there be any way to tell?" Nolan said, a chilling smile on his face that made Belle want to leave the building.

"Like a DNA test?" Mason asked, noticing that Belle was too uncomfortable with Nolan sitting right next to her. Nolan's eyes flickered to Belles hand on the table, inches away from his before he looked back up at Mason, his chilling smile turning into a smirk. "I was thinking a different type of test..."

Before Belle could move, Nolan lifted his hand from under the desk, a pen in hand. And just like that, he slammed it down into the back of Belles hand.

Belle screamed in pain as Nolan ripped the pen out of her hand, blood covered in it. The whole library turned to her as Mason and Corey ran to her, pushing Nolan out of the way as he just smiled.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" Corey snapped, but Nolan ignored him, looking around at everyone's eyes on the four of them.

"Look, look at her. Look!"

Belle, who had her hand pressed into her stomach, looked down, her hand already feeling better. Mason looked down and saw her completely healed hand and let out a very fake laugh only Corey and Belle could pick up on. "Wait, she's fine. It's just a scratch." Mason reassured the room before leading Belle and Corey out of the library as fast as possible.

...

Theo laid in his bed.

Well, Belles bed.

He was trying to sleep. He was almost asleep when he heard the door to Belles fathers bedroom open and slam shut. Theo hastily shot out of bed, shoving as much as he could under the bed and go hide in the bathroom incase the father came in.

"Yeah, yeah. I heard you. Lincoln and Main." The man spoke from the hallway. Theo's brows furrowed. What was he doing so early?

"I heard you the first... twenty times you told me. Make it look like an accident... Use my car... Blah, blah, blah. And if my car doesn't do it? I have plan 2." Adrian chuckled out.

Theo's heart dropped at the sound of a gun clicking.

He stayed silent as Adrian's voice left the house and went out to the car before driving away.

Slowly, Theo crept out from the bathroom. When he knew Adrian was long gone, he immediately called Mel.

But she turned her phone on silent.

...

"They all look the same, are you sure we're going the right way?" Lori panicked to Liam after they started following the smell of poison and the boy just nodded. "I'm positive. I've gotten lost down here before, more than once. Just follow the scent."

Lori scoffed, shaking her head in disgust. "I hate that scent." She muttered, fake gagging before Liam stuck his arm out, stopping Melanie, who was beside him, from walking any further. "I hear something." Liam whispered. Melanie mentally groaned, hating that she couldn't help because she didn't have the same abilities as Liam and Lori.

"It sounds like–" "A heartbeat." Lori interrupted. A smile grew across Lori's face as she followed the scent, Liam and Melanie a couple steps behind her.

"Brett!" Lori yelled, running passed Liam and Mels line of sight. When the two fully entered the room, they saw Lori knelt down next to a dirty, covered in blood Brett.

Brett gave Lori a small, tired smile. "You found the rocks."

Yeah, I found the rocks." Lori laughed out, tears of joy and relief cascading down her face. Brett let out an airy laugh at Lori. He turned away from her, his eyes falling on Melanie and Liam.

"Mel... Liam" He coughed out. Melanie gave him a small smile, muttering a "Hey, bud." as she and Liam walked towards him to help him up.

"Hey, we're gonna get you out of here." Liam said, a small grunt leaving his lips as he pulled the taller boy up.

"You two are dumbasses for doing this." Brett groaned and Melanie rolled her eyes. "Is that your way of thanking us?" She snarked and Brett laughed again, resting his head in Loris shoulder as she grabbed one side of him. "No, that's my way of calling you a dumbass. But, thanks."

Suddenly, the room and the tunnel connected to the room started to fill with smoke. Melanie coughed at how she inhaled as Lori gasped. "They're coming." She whispered.

Liam took a step forward, standing in front of the three other teens. "Okay, go, I'll hold 'em off." He started before looking back at Melanie. "Mel, get them out of here!" Liam started to growled and Melanie shook her head. She wasn't gonna leave him. "Lia–" Liam turned to Melanie, his eyes yellow and his fangs out. "Go!"

Melanie pulled her lips into a line and grabbed Brett's arm, throwing it over her shoulder so her and Lori could get him out.

Melanie could see the manhole coming up and groaned at Brett's heavier weight against her and Lori. "Just a little further, we're almost out of here." She groaned.

When they got to the manhole, Lori and Mel let Brett go up first and then Lori right behind him.

Just as Melanie was about to go up the ladder, she heard Liam yell for her. "Mel! No!"

Melanie stopped, her eyes wide as Liam wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her off and away from the ladder. Melanie looked at his with wide eyes. "What do you mean no?!"

"There was no one there. No one there." Liam said out of breath before looking up at the top of the manhole, Lori just getting to the top. "Brett! Lori!" Liam yelled after the two, but Lori ignored him, going out onto the road.

A loud crash and thuds made Melanie's heart stop for a moment. "No!" She cried. Liam didn't waste a second jumping out of hole, Mel climbing up after him.

"Close your eyes." Melanie heard Lori cry just as she got to the top of the manhole. She felt tears in her eyes at the sight of Lori crawling towards Brett.

Melanie ran to the siblings as Liam stood frozen, watching over them. Melanie checked Bretts pulse and felt a tear fall when she didn't feel anything.

Lori let out a sob, looking at Melanie. "I couldn't take away his pain." She whispered before her own head started to fall. Melanie's eyes widened as Lori's eyes closed.

"No, no, no, no, no." Melanie whispered, grabbing Lori's hands in hers, trying to do everything she could to heal her but she was already gone.

"No. No. I can heal you. I can heal you." Melanie muttered over and over again under her breath, her heart burning in her chest from trying to use as much power as she could to heal Lori. "Please." She whispered, shutting her eyes and dropping her head.

Melanie heard a roar from behind her but she was too tired to move her head. Her eyelids started to grow heavy from draining herself. She started to sway, losing consciousness until she couldn't see anymore and she started to fall.

Liam growled at the crowd forming around him. When he heard a small thud behind him, he turned around and saw Melanie lying on the floor beside Brett and Lori. His eyes slowly went from yellow back to their normal blue, letting himself calm down slightly to listen for a heartbeat from Melanie.

A sigh of relief passed his lips when he heard a heartbeat come from her chest. He looked around, the crowd got bigger and were all whispering. Liam could feel his fangs and ears still out.

Sirens started to sound throughout the air. They were still far away but Liam knew that with the crowd, it'd be hard to get away.

Not knowing what else to do, Liam ran towards Melanie. He grabbed the back of her knees and her back, lifting her into his arms bridal style.

The crowd grew louder, not liking "the monster" grabbing ahold of a young girl. Liam looked around the people, he could see the lights of the police coming through the trees.

He didn't really think once he started running. Lucky for him, the area with the least amount of crowds was in the direction of Mel's house.
