Gum Girl
"Hey Mel? So I'm not very good at history, will your dad go easy on me since we're friends?" Mason asked Melanie after he found her getting out of the car with her father and her sister. Melanie scoffed turning to him as she chuckled. "Mason... I'm pretty sure he's not even gonna go easy on me."
Mason sighed at her words, resting his head on her shoulder before a body pushed itself in between them, wrapping their arms around both teens shoulders as another body came to the other side of Melanie, doing the same.
"Today's the day! We are starting sophomore year!" Belle screamed as Liam chuckled in between Melanie and Mason.
Melanies brows furrowed, turning to Belle. "You look way too happy about school." Mason turned to look at Belle, noticing the smile on her face. "Yeah... who are you and what have you done to Belle?"
The Parker girl rolled her eyes, shaking her head as Mason dug into his backpack, pulling out an old looking book.
"This is the one I was telling you about. I got it from a rare book dealer in Germany. Cost me two hundred bucks, but it was totally worth it." Mason rambled.
"You're still reading about this stuff?" Melanie asked, leaning forward to face him from the other side of Liam. Mason slowly turned to Melanie as if she were crazy. "I was attacked by an armor-plated giant wearing a bear skull. It left an impression. Look. Look. Have you ever seen anything like this?" He quickly flipped open the book to show the three a picture of a berserker.
Melanie pursed her lips as Liam scrunched his face and Belle shook her head. "No. Never." The three said at the same time.
Mason sighed, looking back to the book. "And then there's this whole section about the Nagual. Have you ever heard of the name Tezcat-" "Tezcatlipoca." Melanie corrected, not even looking up from her phone. Liam cleared his throat, elbowing her ribs and she quickly turned to Mason, shaking her head. "No. No, never heard of him."
"Take your seats, everyone." Melanies dad yelled as everyone walked into the class. Melanie took a seat in front of Mason and beside Belle as went Liam to sit behind the Parker girl but stopped when he saw who would sit beside him. "Oh! Great."
Melanie turned around at Liams mutter, watching a girl blow a bubble out of her gum before popping it. The girl turned to Melanie and smiled, making Melanie give her a small smile in return.
"Liam. You're not gonna just stand there, are you?" Mr. Yukimura asked, noticing Liam still standing. Liam cleared his throat, shifting his weight. "Maybe."
Mr. Yukimura smirked, tilting his head. "The whole semester?" Liam looked around before nodding. "Maybe."
Mr. Yukimura sighed, putting the books on the desk. "Liam, have a seat."
Liam looked back and forth between his seat and the girl beside it. "Oh, Jesus Christ." Belle groaned, getting up from her seat in front of him, pushing Liam towards it as she took the seat right beside the girl.
"No, no, no! Wait, don't!" The girl whispered yelled to Belle but it was too late, she sat down in the seat. Belle cringed at the feeling she felt under her leg and slowly looked down, noticing the big wad bubblegum stuck to her jeans.
Belle slowly looked up to the girl who gave her an awkward smile. "Sorry." The girl whispered. Belle sighed, shaking her head as she looked to the front of the class.
Melanie sighed, resting her head in her hands. "This is gonna be a long year." Melanie mumbled and the two wolves immediately nodded, humming in agreement.
...
"Look, I'm not saying I believe all of it a hundred percent, but people around us seem to know things. Like Lydia, she knows things." Mason said as they walked out of class, heading towards Liams locker.
Liam sighed, rubbing his eyes. "Dude, it's the first day at school. Shouldn't you be thinking about other things like..." "Like the soccer team?" Belle interrupted with a big smirk, elbowing Mason and pointing to the soccer team walking passed them.
Mason scoffed, looking between the three. "What do you think I'm going to do? Follow them out to the field and watch them practice while I pretend to study?" Melanie smiled, leaning towards Mason. "It's warm out. They'll probably gonna be shirtless."
Mason looked at the boys walking passed and sighed. "I'll see you in Physics." Melanie and Belle chuckled at Mason before hearing Liam sigh.
The two girls turned their heads and saw the girl from their history class. The girl turned to Melanie and Belle, chuckling at Belles shorts. "Nice shorts." Belle clenched her jaw, giving the girl a tight lipped smile. "Yeah, thanks."
Liam sighed, putting the combination into his locker. "You know, I was wondering if you were still pissed off about the sixth grade, but I guess you cleared that up." He sighed out and the girl gave a him a glare. "I'm not pissed off, Liam. I'm vengeful."
The girl slammed her locker shut, turning to Melanie and Belle who looked at her in shock, she gave them a happy wave that the girls slowly returned, both of their jaws slightly dropped.
As soon as she was gone, Melanie ran up beside Liam, pulling on his ear. "What the hell did you do to gum girl over there because if Belle and I wind up getting stuck in the crossfire, I need to know who's side I'm on." Melanie whisper yelled, making Liam groan, smacking her hand away from his ear before sighing, leaning his head into his locker. "You two won't get caught in the crossfire."
"Uh... Hello!" Melanie yelled, pointing to Belle in her lacrosse shorts, making Liam sigh. "Okay, okay, okay. I might've punched her back in the sixth grade."
Melanie quickly turned to Belle, unfazed. "Okay so we're on the girls side." Melanie said, Belle nodding along until the blonde leaned towards Liam. "What's her name?"
"Hayden." Liam grumbled and the two girls nodded. Belle let out a low hum, crossing her arms. "Well, if you excuse me, I will be joining Mason watching the soccer team. I'm pretty sure the girls team is out there too. So I'll see you guys later."
Melanie and Liam waved to Belle as she happily walked down the hall. Melanie waited until Liam closed his locker before a hand grabbed both of their shoulders tightly, pulling them towards the parking lot.
"Wh- Ow!" Melanie groaned, turning around to Stiles who had a determined look on his face as the pushed the two into the backseat of his Jeep.
"You know this is kidnapping, right?" Melanie asked, sticking her head in between the two front seats, turning to Stiles as Liam grabbed the stack of papers in the passenger seat.
Stiles sighed, rolling his eyes as he turned to Melanie. "Mel... Now it not the time."
Liam quickly tapped Melanies shoulder, making her lean back into the seats, looking at the papers in his hands. Melanie slowly took the papers out of his hands, reading it over as Liams face scrunched.
"What's a Criminal Tremor?" Liam asked, making Stiles turn to the pair, Melanie waving the paper around. Stiles scoffed, snatching it out of Melanie's hands as he started the jeep. "It doesn't matter."
...
"I told you he was up to something." Stiles muttered to Melanie and Liam as they watched Theo walk into the woods. Liam rolled his eyes, turning to Stiles. "We just spent three hours watching this dude play video games in his bedroom." Melanie nodded her head in agreement, looking to the older boy. "Yeah. He better be out here covering up a mass murder or else you wasted my night."
Stiles turned to Melanie and sighed, walking in the direction Theo went. "Let's find out." He mumbled before turning to Liam. "You still got his scent?" "Don't need it." Liam said as Melanie pursed her lips, pointing at the footprints on the ground.
As the three walked, Liam looked down at his phone and suddenly stopped, making Melanie slowly turn around to him. "What? What's wrong?" She asked, making Stiles stop and turn around as well.
Liam looked back and forth between Melanie and his phone before sighing. "I forgot, I was supposed to meet Mason at the school gym."
Stiles shook his head. "Okay, why didn't you just tell him?" "Tell him what?" Liam asked, slowly looking to Stiles who just shrugged. "Anything."
"He can't just tell him anything." Melanie mumbled, making Stiles turn to her. "Why not?"
"Because we haven't... we haven't told him everything." Liam muttered and Stiles' face scrunched. "Still? We said it was okay."
Liam sighed, nodding his head. "Yeah, I know, but it's not that easy. It's a lot to accept."
"He watched my dad blow up a Berserker with a land mine. I think the groundwork's been pretty thoroughly laid for acceptance. Scott and I have been through this. Okay? More than once. It's always been better when they know." Stiles said before continuing to walk.
Melanie sighed, turning to Liam. She stuck her hand out for him to grab. Liam felt his heart beat faster as he grabbed her hand and the two walked after Stiles. "I think we should tell Mason." Melanie mumbled.
Liam looked to Melanie with wide, worried eyes. "But what if he freaks out? What if he doesn't want to talk to us? What if he tries to stab me and Belle with something silver or you with whatever can kill a kitsune? Or what if-" Liam was cut off by not looking where he was going and falling into a six foot hole and since he was holding Melanies hand, she fell in too.
"Ow!" Melanie groaned, landing on her front. She tilted her head back to face Liam who had fallen on top of her. "Get off me!"
Liams eyes went wide as he scrambled to get up, grabbing her hands to help her up. "I'm sorry." Liam mumbled as the sound of someone running sounded through their ears and Stiles head popped out from the top of the hole. "What the hell are you two doing? Let's go- Oh! There he is. Hurry up. Stop screwing around."
Melanie sighed, looking up to the top of the hole, her eyes feel to the ground where a small flower stood a few inches tall. She quickly squatted down to look at the flower.
She hovered her hand a few inches above the pedals and closed her eyes. She imagined the flower rising up and tangling into itself to make a ladder.
Melanie slowly opened her eyes and felt her jaw drop at the flower twisted to make its own little step ladder. She let out an airy chuckle, turning around to Liam who was looking down at his phone. She quickly elbowed him lightly, gesturing her head to say, 'lets go'.
She walked up the little steps as she smiled at the flower. "Thank you." She muttered before Liam started making his way up as well.
The two quickly turned to each other and once they met eyes, they nodded, running after Stiles. They hid beside him behind a tree as Stiles hit Liams shoulder. "Come on. Try and get his scent. Get anything?"
Melanie turned to Liam, watching him sniff for a few seconds before tilting his head, nodding. "Soap. It's nice. It smells good." Melanie chuckled, shaking her head as Stiles sighed. "Not his soap, his emotional state. Chemosignals, remember?"
Liam made an 'o' shape with his mouth, quickly nodding his head. "Oh, yeah. Okay." Melanie watched as his face fell, turning to her and Stiles with a small frown. "He's sad."
"He's sad?" Stiles asked in an unbelieved tone. "Well, not just sad... It's more like grief." Liam muttered as Melanie frowned, watching as the Raeken boy dropped a flower into the river. "Grief?"
Liam turned to Melanie, nodding her head as Stiles' face fell, hitting Melanie and Liams shoulders. "Oh, my God! Go! We have to go." Melanies face scrunched, turning to him. "What? Why?"
Stile shook his head, grabbing their shoulders and pulling them back to his Jeep. "Go! Right now. Just go. That's the bridge where they found his sister."
"What sister?" Liam asked, making Stiles sigh. "The one that got lost and died from exposure. He's leaving a flower for her."
Melanie looked at Stiles with wide eyes. "Dead!?! You never said anything about a dead sister! Putting a flower down for her doesn't sound evil."
Before Stiles could reply, Liam abruptly stopped, looking up at a tree, making Stiles and Melanie turn to see what he was looking at, their eyes going wide at Theo standing on a branch.
He jumped off the branch, leaning right in front of them. "What you guys doing?"
Instead of answering, Liam growled at him, taking a step forward, making Theo chuckle. "Why do I get the feeling this kid's tougher than he looks?"
"Only when we let him off his leash." Stiles said as Melanie grabbed Liams shoulder, pulling him back.
Theo turned to Stiles with a small frown. "Stiles, we were in Little League together. Why are you so suspicious of me?"
"Because of these." Stiles said, handing Theo the paper work Melanie and Liam was looking at in the car before continuing. "One's a speeding ticket signed by your dad eight years ago. The other one's a signature on a transfer form to Beacon High. They're different."
Theo looked at the two papers with furrowed brows, an airy chuckle escaping his lips. "Huh. Yeah, they do look a little different."
"No, they're totally different." Stiles snapped as Melanie let out a small scoff. "Looks like it was signed by two different people." She grumbled, having looked at the signatures earlier in the day. Liam whipped around to her, whacking her shoulder.
"So my dad's not my dad? Like he's an imposter?" Theo asked quietly, looking back and forth between the three. Stiles shrugged. "Yeah, something like that."
Theo sighed, looking up to Stiles. "Who do you think I am?" Liam looked up at the boy, finally butting in as he shrugged. "We don't know yet."
Theo looked back down at the papers, shaking his head. "Want me to give you a DNA sample or something?" Stiles rolled his eyes, scoffing. "No. I don't have anything from the fourth grade to match it to."
Theo looked up to Stiles, his eyes looking almost soft and vulnerable to Liam and Melanie. You know, Stiles, I came back here for Scott... but I also came back for you. Someone like you. Someone who's willing to walk into the woods in the middle of the night to protect his friends. I don't have anyone like that, but Scott does. You all do. I know I'm in the right place. I'm meant to be here. I'm meant to be part of this pack."
...
"Find anything?" Scott asked, leaning up against his bike beside Stiles' jeep. The Stilinski boy sighed, shaking his head as he walked towards his car. "Nope."
Liam looked back and forth between Scott, Stiles and Melanie, a big smile on his face. "I fell in a hole." Melanie let out a tired chuckle, rubbing her eyes tiredly as she walked towards the Jeep. "Yeah, I know. You pulled me down with you."
"It was the bridge where his sister died, wasn't it?" Scott asked, walking towards Stiles who pulled his lips into a line, nodding his head. "Yes, it was. Very embarrassing. So we are gonna leave now."
Stiles quickly put his key in the ignition and turned it as Melanie climbed into the backseat. The engine, instead of roaring to a start, was a sputtering mess, making Stiles groan, getting out of the Jeep. "Son of a... Mel, get in the car and turn the ignition when I say."
Melanie nodded, climbing into the he front seat from the back as Liam went into her spot in the back. It was quiet for a few seconds before Liam cleared his throat, turning to Melanie. "So you think I should tell Mason?"
"Try it!" Stiles screamed and Melanie quickly put the key into the car, turning it as the car shook, the sound of the engine sputtering ringing through the air before stopping. Melanie sighed, turning to Liam to answer his question. "I think you should. He's your best friend and in all honesty.. I think he might fangirl over you more than be mad you didn't tell him."
Liams eyes went wide at Melanies words. "So there is a chance he'll be mad!" Liam whisper yelled. Melanie rolled her eyes going to talk up Stiles screamed again.
"Try it again!"
Melanie turned the key, the two were met with the sound of sputtering, making Melanie silently groan, turning to Liam. "Look, I'm going home after this because I for one at really tired but tell Mason. He deserves to know." Melanie said and Liam looked down, nodding his head.
"Try it again!"
Melanie turned the key, instantly throwing her head back and the engine sputtering for the forth time.
"Because you trust everyone!" Stiles screamed before slamming his hand on the Jeep, making Melanie and Liam jump in shock.
...
After Stiles dropped Liam off at the school, he dropped Melanie off at her house. She quietly climbed through her window since her parents thought she was home all night.
She quickly changed into her pajamas and sat down in her bed, grabbing her wolf plush and turned on 'Tangled'.
A few minutes into the movie, a soft knock came from her window and she turned around, unlocking the window for Belle and the blonde quickly climbed into the window.
"Thanks. How was it being a spy? Was he hiding bodies of all the people he killed?" Belle asked jokingly and Melanie sighed, scooting over so there was room for Belle on the bed. "Close he was leaving flowers where his sister died."
Belles jaw dropped slightly, turning to Melanie. "And Stiles didn't catch that?" Melanie shook her head, keeping her eyes on the TV. "Not until after we watched him leave flowers."
Belle sighed, leaning back as Melanies phone rang. She leaned over to her nightstand to grab her phone and smiled at Liam trying to facetime.
She quickly answered but instead of seeing Liam, Mason held the phone, a huge smile on his face. Melanie didn't even have time to open her mouth before Mason spoke.
"Liams a werewolf!"
Melanie laughed as Belle moved over to her to look at the phone. "We know!"
Mason laughed, nodding his head. "I know! And Belles one too! And you're a kitsune! Which I don't really know what that is yet..." Melanie chuckled, shrugging as Liam popped into frame, making Melanie smile.
Belle immediately picked up on Mel's heartbeat quickening when Liam popped up and a knowing smirk grew on her face.
"I finally told him!" Liam said happily, a big smile on his face. Melanie nodded along, the same smile plastered on her face as she nodded.
Mason sighed, looking at the girls tiredly. "Well after that news drop... I'm very tired so we're gonna go." Liam nodded, giving a small to the camera. "We'll see you tomorrow."
Melanie smiled, she and Belle waving to the boys until Mason hung up.
As soon as the call ended, Belle turned to Melanie, a big smirk on her face. "You like Liam."
Melanies eyes went wide as her face turned red. "Wh- No! No I don't!" Belle rolled her eyes. "You know... even if I wasn't a werewolf, I could tell when you're lying. Which is right now."
Melanie quickly shook her head as Belle sighed, giving her a 'really' look. Melanie tried to look anywhere but Belles eyes but she kept meeting her eyes, making Melanie sigh. "I would appreciate it if you'd stop looking at me like that."
Belle sighed, lying down to go to sleep. "Stubborn."
