As Good As Us
Melanie was asleep when she was woken up from someone calling at 2am. She groaned into her pillow, going to reach for her phone without looking but she missed completely.
She lifted her head out of the pillow and frowned that she was now awake. She leaned forward and grabbed her phone from her nightstand, waking up Liam beside her since his arm was draped around her waist.
"What the..." Melanie muttered as she looked at the Caller ID. Liams brows furrowed, still half asleep as he watched Melanie in confusion. "What? Who is it?" He asked as Melanie sat up and answered the call. "Hello?" Melanie asked, her voice tired and raspy.
"I need your help." Theo said from the other end of the line. Melanie rubbed her eyes and started to get out of bed, only confusing Liam more. "Where are you and what's wrong?"
"I'm at the animal clinic. I can explain when you get here." Theo said as Melanie walked to the other side of her room, slipping on her shoes as Lima jumped out of the bed and ran towards Melanie.
"Who are you talking to!?" Liam whisper yelled and Melanie held up her finger as if to say "hold on" as she put in her other shoe.
"You're not gonna murder me when I get there, right?" Melanie asked Theo and Liams eyes practically fell out of his head as his eyes widened. "Murder?!" Liam yelled and Melanie whipped her head to him with a glare.
She put her hand over her phone and nodded her head to the door. "Are you insane?! Screaming 'murder' in a house with two werewolves and Melissa in the next room!" Melanie whisper yelled and Liam pulled his lips into a line before mouthing "sorry".
Melanie rolled her eyes with a smile. She leaned towards Liam and kissed his cheek before she put her attention back onto Theo.
"I'm leave right now." Melanie said and Theo chuckled. "I didn't even answer the murder question."
Melanies brows rose at his words, crossing one of her hands over her chest. "Do you want me to help you or not?" She asked and she heard Theo gulp. "I won't kill you." He whispered and Melanie smiled and titled her head.
"Aww... That's so sweet of you." Melanie sang before she hang up, not even saying goodbye. She turned around to Liam and saw him standing in front of her, waiting for her to fill him in.
Melanie looked down at his feet and saw that he wasn't wearing any shoes or socks. She looked up at Liam and squinted at him. "You heard that whole conversation and decided not to put your shoes on?"
Liam looked down at his feet and cursed until his breath, he rams towards his shoes and socks and put them on. As he did, he looked up at Melanie.
"So... Where are we going?" Liam asked and Melanie sighed, walking towards her window and leaning against the sill of it, her arms crossed as she sighed.
"The animal clinic. Theo needs help." Melanie said just as Liam finished tying his shoes. Liam stood up, his brows furrowed. "Theo? What does Theo need help with?" He asked and Melanie shrugged, turning to her window and opening it.
"Guess we're finding out when we get there." Melanie said as she crawled out of her window. She walked towards the edge of the roof of the first floor before she jumped down onto the ground.
Liam sighed, hating when they had to sneak out through Melanie's window because he hated jumping from the second floor. He crawled out of the window, walked towards the edge of the roof and jumped down like Melanie did just not as gracefully.
Once he landed and stood back up, he brushed any dirt off his pajamas and turned to Melanie as she started to walk towards the clinic.
"And why are we helping Theo?" Liam asked, putting extra pronunciation on the "why". Melanie grabbed Liam's hand so he could catch up to her pace as she continued to stare ahead.
"Because we're good people." Melanie said and Liam squinted, tilting his head. "Are we?" He asked and Melanie but her lip.
Her steps slowed and Liam stopped completely, making Melanie stop, watching her carefully. Melanie kept her eyes forward before she sighed and looked at the ground.
"Look..." She started she licked her lips and looked back up at Liam. "When my parents left, no one from the pack helped me. No helped me pack my things in my old place and move them into Scotts place." Melanie said, making Liam look away from her, knowing he wasn't there because he was too worried to talk to her.
Melanie moved so she was in Liams eyeline. "No one except Scott and Theo." She said, making Liam turn back to her as she continued. "And when I was taken by the Ghost Riders, Theo helped. He may have been horrible in the middle of those two events but in the end, he helped me through some of the most difficult and hardest moments of my life. So if he needs help, I want to help him."
Liam watched Melanie closer before he grabbed her other hand, holding both of them in his as he squeezed them. He pulled on her hands, pulling Melanie closer to him and into a kiss. Liam let go of one Melanie's hands and used it to put on her face.
When they pulled away, their faces stayed close as Liam rubbed his thumb across Melanie's cheek.
"Let's go help Theo. It's gonna be morning soon." Liam said and Melanie slowly started to smile. She pulled him into one more quick kiss, letting out a string of "thank yous" as she tugged him towards the clinic.
...
When they got to the clinic, Theo was waiting outside for them. Instead of leading them inside, he led them to the parking lot to his truck.
He explained how ever since he's been back, he's been living in his car and he's gotten caught and banned at just about anywhere in town, meaning he needed somewhere to stay.
As much as Melanie wanted to help Theo, it was pretty difficult considering she lived with Scott and Belle who both still weren't on the greatest terms with him.
"Okay, well... incase you forgot, I live with Scott. So I think that's a no for living with me." Melanie said and Theo nodded understandingly. He turned to Liam beside her, the boy not realizing Theo and Mel's eyes were on him until Mel elbowed him.
Liam jumped at the elbow to the gut. When he noticed Melanie and Theos eyes watching him, he immediately shook his head. "Oh, Hell no." Liam said and Theo sighed.
An idea popped into Melanie's head and she turned to Theo, a small smile. "I might know a place." Melanie said and Theo turned to her, a relieved smile growing on his face.
...
Melanie led Theo and Liam down the side of Belles house. She's turned the corner to look into the driveway to see if Belles dad was home. When she saw the car was gone, she turned back to the two boys and gestured them to back up.
She lead them towards Belle's bedroom window and opened the window. "Just follow me." Melanie whispered before pushing herself into the house and climbing in. Liam was next to get into the house. Melanie heard grunting behind her and turned around to see what Liam was struggling with just as he fell into the house, falling on his butt.
"I'm okay." Liam groaned out. Melanie rolled her eyes, walking forwards towards Liam. She bent down and grabbed Liams arm, pulling him up to stand as Theo climbed through the window with ease. Melanie snickered, watching Theo with an amused smile. "You really good at that, aren't you?"
Theo chuckled at Melanie's words, looking around the room. "Yeah, practiced a lot with your mom." Theo shot back. Melanie gave him a fake glare, clenching her jaw. "That's not funny. My mom left me." Melanie said and Theos face fell.
Once she got a reaction out of him, Melanie laughed, her hand going to her stomach as she shook her head. "I'm just kidding. That was a good one." Melanie said before her laughter died down.
Theo calmed slightly, looking around the room with big eyes. "So whose house did we break into?"
"Belle's." Melanie said and Theo turned to her as she continued. "Belle is rarely here. Only so her dad knows she's alive but she hates it here and she hates him." Melanie said and Theo watched her with sad eyes. He looked around the room and let out a small breath. "Looks like this place hasn't been used in a while." Theo muttered but Melanie heard him. "It hasn't."
Theo turned to Melanie, watching her a she pointed to a dresser in the corner of the room. "She only uses that dresser to take some clothes back to our house and leave some new clean ones." Theo looked back at the dresser behind him as Liam turned to him. "You don't have to worry about Adrian. He rarely comes in here. If he does, just hide your stuff under the bed and go out the window."
Theo nodded, looking back and forth between the two. "And Adrian is..." "Belle's dad." Melanie and Liam answered. Theo nodded, whispering a small "got it."
Melanie turned to the bed, pointing at the small mini fridge right next to it. "You can leave food and stuff here so you don't have to sneak around the house and that's the bathroom." Melanie pointing at the door behind Liam, Liam using his thumb to point being him at the door.
Melanie sighed, throwing her hands in her sweats pockets as she nodded. "I think that's everything. You need help moving in?" Melanie asked and Theo let out an airy chuckle, shaking his head. "No. I got it. You two go back home." He said and Melanie raised her brows, watching Theo closely. "You sure?" She asked and They sent her a small but grateful smile. "I'm sure."
Melanie watched Theo for a few seconds before nodding. She grabbed Liam's hand and led him towards the window. Melanie easily climbed out, doing it many times from helping Belle get new clothes. Once she was fully standing, she looked back to Liam and smiled. "Jump! I'll catch you!" Melanie teased and Liam groaned.
Theo watched from inside the house as Liam fell out on the windowsill. "You said you'd catch me!" Liam yelled and Melanie laughed, picking Liam up and helping him stand. "I didn't think you were going to actually fall!" Melanie laughed out before she turned back to the window, giving Theo a big smile. "You need anything, you call. Okay?"
Theo have Mel a thumbs up and Melanie quickly returned it as her other hand grabbed Liam's. Theo watched with a smile as Melanie and Liam ran away and back towards her and Scott's house, glad he had someone on his side even after everything he did.
...
"I was saying that if we're talking about some sort of mythical creature that's so powerful the only safe place to put it is in the Wild Hunt, then we have a serious problem." Belle said as she, Mel and Gwen got into their lacrosse jerseys that morning.
Mel was still from her lack sleep helping Theo find a place to sleep. She sighed and turned to Belle as she readjusted her jersey. "Can we figure it out while I'm running drills? Brett's meeting me to help the freshmen that wanna make First Line."
Belles brows raised at Melanie's words, a small smirk on her face as she leaned on the gym lockers right next to Melanie. "Brett?" Belle asked and Melanie nodded, her eyes still looking in her locker. Belle crossed her arms and tilted her head.
"Incredibly hot Brett with the eight-pack abs that your boyfriend gets jealous of?" Belle asked and Melanie rolled her eyes, turning to Belle. "Pretty sure his name is just Brett. And Liam doesn't get jealous." Melanie said and Belle gave her a "really?" look. "Anymore." Melanie muttered.
"He has an eight-pack. Do you, do you know how hard it is for the human body to have an eight-pack?" Belle said, touching her own stomach. Gwen laughed at the two girls, turning to Melanie. "Why is he helping you?"
Mel turned to Gwen before turning back to her locker, putting her backpack inside. "Figured I could use the help since there's no way any of them are gonna make First Line. I mean, no one does before junior year."
"Scott did. And us and Liam incase you forgot." Belle said and Melanie smirked, closing her locker. "Well... no one's as good as us." She said and Belle laughed, nodding her head. "Hell yeah."
...
Melanie thought inviting Brett to help teach the incoming lacrosse members would be a lot less annoying then she thought. Brett had spent the passed two hours of practice showing off to the newbies.
Melanie was getting tired of all the "ohhhs" and "ahhhs" from the freshman watching Brett show off and after he got passed Corey who was playing goal again, Melanie had just about had enough.
She sped towards him as Brett bounced around the field with a big smile, pointing at the goal to the freshmen. "Perfect rocker." Brett said and Melanie let out a dry laugh, grabbing the cage of his helmet and pulling it down so he was at her height.
"Okay, look. I asked you to help out not show off." Melanie grumbled and Brett shook off Melanie's grip, giving her a cocky smile. "And I asked your to be good at goal." Brett said, nodding his head to Corey before he shrugged. "And I'm just being myself."
Melanie scoffed at his words and put a hand to her head, pushing some of her hair out of her face. Brett looked back at the freshmen before he turned back to Melanie, taking a step closer to her as he raised his brows.
"You got some pretty big cleats to fill with Scott leaving. You ready for all this?" Brett asked, sounding more serious than sarcastic. Melanie huffed, her eyes glaring at Brett's as she squinted at the sun in her eyes.
"I earned this title. I know what I can handle." Melanie said, finally looking up at Brett, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Now stop showing off or I'm gonna have Liam teach the freshmen." Melanie said, pushing Brett shoulder back, making him stumble slightly.
Liam, who was sitting on the bleachers with the freshmen, perked up at his name being mentioned as he eavesdropped over Brett and Mel's conversation.
Brett smirked, nodding his head as he put his helmet back on. Melanie huffed, putting on her helmet.
She walked towards her position on the other side of the field s as s she took off one of her gloves to throw the ball to Brett better. She held it tightly in her hand, not even noticing vines started to grow out of her hands and wrap around the ball.
She let out a small, unconscious growl before running towards Brett and throwing the ball.
The ball surprisingly whizzed passed Brett and even went passed Corey guarding goal. The ball whipped through the net and rolled down the small hill of the lacrosse field and into the teachers parking lot.
Melanie walked towards Brett with a small smirk on her face as she took off her helmet.
"Nice catch." Melanie snarked, pushing her helmet into Brett's chest, knocking him back a couple of steps.
"Practice is over! Heads to the locker rooms!" Melanie yelled as she walked towards the bleachers where all the freshman, Liam, Belle, Gwen and Mason were sitting.
When Mel got to the group, Liam stood up from the bleachers and wrapped an arm around Melanie's shoulders.
"You should've just let me teach them." Liam sighed out and Melanie turned to him with a fake glare, too tired from Brett's cockiness to hear Liams. Realizing she was tired, Liam gulped and kissed Melanie's temple, muttering a small "sorry".
