98. Sweet Surrender

I'd visited Iz a lot now. Only because she was my best friend. I was looking forwards to my day. That was until I found out I was working on a ped's case. I think we all knew what happened the last time. Mer was also engaged now and Iz was helping to plan the wedding. It was sweet. I was just hoping that Iz would be able to get to her own wedding one day. When I got to work I went Bailey so we could go to peds. We then found Arizona and she was talking about Callie's dad.

"Meeting Callie's dad was so not on the agenda for today. I mean, he seems like the kind of man who needs a little preparation before meeting his daughter's girlfriend. But you should have seen the look on his face when I..." Arizona said to us, I'd only met him once and he was a little intense.

"Ok, can you stop doing that thing?" Bailey asked her, what thing would that be?

"What thing?" Arizona asked her.

"Telling me your business thing. It's my day off. I'm just here to watch you do the fundoplication." Bailey said to her. She really wasn't too impressed.

"You know what? I checked your schedule. You worked at 90-hour week. You should be at home sleeping or playing with your kid." Arizona told her, I felt awkward being here.

"Ok, you can stop doing that thing, too." Bailey said to her, what thing.

"It's just that Peds can be tough. And it can be hard on a family." Arizona said to us, well when it comes to kids it's the worst.

"Not mine. My husband...is very supportive. He is...can't wait for me to start my fellowship." Bailey said to us, she was lying it was obvious.

"Bailey, tell us the truth. He doesn't know does he?" I said to her, she looked at me then back at Arizona.

"No." She answered.

"Why?" Arizona asked her. Before Bailey could answer someone grabbed Arizona's attention.

"Dr. Robbins, it's Jessica. She just had a seizure. She can't breathe." A guy said, we instantly went to her room.

"She's got Tay-Sachs. We need to get a mask on her. Crank it up to 15 liters." Arizona said to us, she looked so young and fragile. Bailey cranked the liters up to 15. "All right, sit up. You're ok, honey. You just need to breathe. Slow, slow. Good, good. You're getting better. Slow, slow. I think you're ok." Arizona said to her. Jessica then started to breathe better again. The poor kid. We continued with what we needed to do after she was ok. We then looked into Jessica's room. "Tay-Sachs is always fatal in children, usually by the age of four or five. She's six." Arizona said to us, that didn't stop it from being fatal. Her dad then exited the room.

"I spoke to my friend who's doing the fundraising for Jessica. And he told me about this place in Mexico. They do experimental stem cell therapy. In a couple of weeks, we'll have enough money to..." He started saying to us before Arizona intruded.

"Matt, Jessica doesn't have a couple of weeks. I think it's quite possible she only has a couple of hours. We've talked about this. We've talked about this a lot. And now it's here. And I know it's hard. I know it's impossible. But we've done everything that we can. And you have done everything that you can." Arizona told Matt. Me and Bailey kept looking at each other.

"No. No! Listen. All we need is a little more time. Ok, if you read about these treatments..." Matt started before he dropped them. It must be hard knowing that you're about to lose your child. We then started picking up the scattered pieces of paper. "I don't mean to insult you. I know you've done everything. I just need a few more days ok? I just need a little more time. She's a fighter. You know that she'll fight. I just need to get her there." He said to us.

"Matt. She's not gonna make it to Mexico." Arizona told him before going silent. "And I am so sorry, but the best thing that you can do for her now is to be here." Arizona told him, you could see the tears forming in his eyes.

"No!" He said while standing. "You don't tell me what's best. You don't tell me. I will find a way. I will get her to Mexico tonight. Shame on you for giving up on her. Shame on you, Dr. Robbins." He said before walking away. Me and Bailey shared looks.

"Arizona, he doesn't mean it. He's just upset." I said to her. She left leaving me and Bailey. "That poor kid." I said to Bailey.

"I know, it's only fair that we stay with her." Bailey said to me I nodded.

"Let's keep her company." I said to her with a smile. We then walked in the room.

"Well, look who's up." Bailey said to her with a smile.

"Where's my dad?" Jessica asked us.

"He should be here soon but you have us for now. How are you feeling? Would you like some water?" I asked her.

"I want my dad." She said to us sadly. This little girl was breaking my heart.

"It's ok. It's ok." Bailey said to her. "Um...when my little boy is scared you know what makes him feel better?" Bailey asked her with a smile. Jess just shook her head. "When he rocks in the chair with me. Let me show you." Bailey said before picking her up. I couldn't do that with my little boy because he was getting tall. "Here we go. All righty. There we go, sweetie." Bailey said before walking over to the chair and rocking her. I sat down on the bed. "Yeah. He likes this. He likes this a lot. What does your little boy like Y/l/n?" Bailey asked me with a smile.

"Well, when he gets a nightmare I usually lie next to him and hug him until he falls asleep." I said to her with a smile.

"I haven't reached that stage yet but when I do. I'll thank you for the method." Bailey said to me a smile. After a while Jessica fell asleep I moved off of the bed so that Bailey could put her down. All of a sudden Matt and Arizona came in. This was after me and Bailey led either side of Jessica.

"Doctors said if we can find a way to get her there, he'll treat Jessica." Matt said to us. She wouldn't make it there though.

"Matt, she's been asking for you." Bailey said to him. I moved so that Matt and Jessica could talk.

"Hey, baby. Guess what? We're gonna go to Mexico and you're gonna love it there. The sky is so blue and the sand is white. And the water..." Matt said to her.

"Can we go tomorrow, Daddy? I'm so tired." Jessica said to him, Matt then backed away.

"Why don't you trade places with me? It's you she wants." Bailey said to him, it didn't seem like he wanted to.

"All I need is plane fare. Then we'll be on our way." He said to us before living the room. I then led back next to Jessica again.

"I can get someone to relieve you both for a while. If you still want to watch me do that fundoplication." Arizona said to us, I wanted to stay. Bailey tried to move but Jessica grabbed her.

"I'm ok." Bailey said to her. Arizona nodded and then left.

"There was no way I was leaving her." I said to Bailey, she looked at me and then at Jessica.

"I can't believe her dad is." Bailey said to me. I couldn't either.

"But at least she has us. We're not her dad but we're two mothers who would want someone to do the same for our boys." I said to Bailey while stroking Jessica's hat.

"Like the time that you and George we're there for me when I gave birth to Tuck. When you both did that I knew that you would be my favorites. And you are." She said to me, it was nice knowing that I was her favourite.

"And Dr. Bailey, you are my favourite surgeon in this hospital. I'm so glad that I decided to come here." I said making her smile. We talked for a bit longer. We had to keep it quiet though because Jess was trying to sleep. Me and Bailey were about to sleep when Matt came in.

"I called eight organizations. And they have a wait list for emergency funds. I don't know what to do. I just don't know..." He said to us while looking at us.

"Mr. Smithson, it's time to stop now." Bailey said to him but he didn't listen.

"Maybe if we just go to the airport, they'll let us on a flight. I mean...people do things like that, right? For a sick child, they'll..." He said to us, I stopped him.

"Mr. Smithson." I said to him.

"No! Please don't make me stop. Please don't make me stop. Please don't make me stop!" He shouted. Bailey looked at him.

"We wouldn't want to stop either. But Jessica is terminal, Matt, I'm a few minutes, her heart is going to stop. Now, we can pump her chest, we can push all sorts of medicines, and put her on a ventilator 'cause she'll no longer be able to breathe on her own. But even with all of that she's going to die." Bailey said quietly to him, he started to breakdown. "And the last people who will have her hand on her, who will have been able to touch her, it's gonna be us or a nurse. Or it could be you. You don't want to miss this. This next part, she needs her daddy for this part." Bailey said with her voice cracking a bit.

"So, please Mr. Smithson. Stop and be with Jessica." I said to him, he walked over to us.

"Daddy? Are we going to Mexico?" Jessica asked her dad. I moved out of his way so he could lie next to her. Bailey then stood up and tucked her in.

"Yes. We're going to Mexico." He said to her, Bailey sat in the chair and I stood next to her. "Where the sky is blue, blue. And the sand is white. The water is so clear, you can see all the way to the bottom. We're going. Just you and me. No more doctors. No more medicine. No more hospitals. Just you and me." He said before the constant beep of the flatline was heard. Me and Bailey has let a few tears drop. "We're gonna go. Just relax. We'll be there soon." Matt said before Bailey turned off the machine. "We'll play on the beach all day. We'll make sand castles. We're going. We'll be there soon. You'll see. We're gonna have so much fun. Just you and me. Just you and me." He said while crying. We gave him some time with her. Once we were out of sight me and Bailey cried a little. Peds was hard.

"That's too heartbreaking. I can't work peds." I said to Bailey after wiping my last tears.

"I'm not sure I want to anymore. Especially if there's more cases like hers." Bailey said to me, when our shift ended. I didn't want to go home just yet so I decided to go to Jackson's apartment.

"Y/n, what are you doing here?" He asked me while opening the door.

"I don't know." I said to him my voice cracking a bit. He let me in.

"What happened are you okay?" He asked me while shutting the door.

"Today I had to hug this little girl because her dad didn't want to come to the fact that she was dying. And then when I saw her die it broke me." I said to him. I then just started crying. Jackson walked over to me.

"Hey, it's okay." He said before hugging me. When I stopped crying he got me something to drink. That night I realised how good Jackson was for me. Maybe I needed him in my life and I was only just finding out.
