89. Wish You Were Here
Today, I wasn't expecting to be on Bailey's service but I was. But this only meant that I would be meeting the new pediatric surgeon. I'd heard a few things about her, one being that she was extremely great with the kids that came into the hospital. I was looking forward to working with her and Bailey. We went to the usually space in the morning.
"Happy birthday Iz." I said to her with a smile.
"Oh, thank you Y/n." She said to me with a smile.
"Ok, we gotta move fast, people, so focus. O'Malley, the pit. Karev and Y/n, you're with me. We got a surgery. Stevens, clinic budget is due. And Yang, Grey, wait for the Chief at the trauma bay." Bailey said dishing out where we were all needed for the day.
"What? Why?" Cristina asked her.
"Both of us?" Mer asked, I guess they still hadn't made up yet.
"Yes, both of you. I don't know what, I don't know why. Just go." Bailey said before walking away. Cristina then left, Mer came up to me.
"Save me." She said to me.
"I wish I could." I said to her before she left. I then left, which left Alex and Iz. George had already gone but I never saw him leave. Alex joined me on my walk. "Did you know that we're working with the new surgeon in peds?" I asked him with a smile.
"I had no idea. What have you heard about her?" He asked me.
"I heard that she's really good at her job." I said to him, with a smile. When we got to our patient I smiled, it was boy who Bailey seemed to know.
"Jackson Prescott, you shot up again!" Bailey said while entering the room.
"No, I didn't." He said to her with a smile.
"Then why do you look so big?" She asked him, he walked over to the bed and sat on it.
"'Cause you're short." He said to Bailey making me smile.
"I've always been short, you grew." Bailey said to him with a smile.
"Dr. Bailey, while I check out Jackson, why don't you take Melinda through today's procedure." Dr. Kenley said to us.
"Yeah, no problem. Come on." Bailey said before we left the room with Melinda.
"Did you see he looks more yellow?" She asked us.
"Ok, Dr. Kenley's going to check his liver function test." Bailey told her before she stopped and looked at me and Alex. "Look, before we start, let me explain something. Jackson's had 12 bowel resections. Dr. Kenley calls me any time Jackson's here. Now, Melinda is a single mom. She works like a maniac to make sure that beautiful boy has health coverage." Bailey started saying to us, I wouldn't mind paying for anything that he needed.
"Miranda..." Melinda said trying to stop here.
"Don't even start. This is a special family. We do whatever we can to help." Bailey said to us, I nodded and I would do just that.
"It's really not necessary..." Melinda started.
"It is necessary." Bailey said to her it went quiet for a second.
"We'll take good care of your kid." Alex said to her.
"It's in safe hands." I said to her with a reassuring smile.
"Thank you." She said before me and Alex walked back to Jackson's room.
"Are you gonna let me have a lollipop this time? My stomach's not bad right now." Jackson said to Dr. Kenley. I'm guessing he was eyeing the lollipops in his pocket.
"It's not? So how come I'm about to cut a piece out of it again?" Dr. Kenley asked him, me and Alex were just checking over the chart.
"Give me one of the lollipops, and if I keep it down we don't have to do the operation." Jackson said making me smile, if only it worked that way.
"I'm not sure that's gonna...I'm not...I'm..." Dr. Kenley started saying before sitting down on the bed.
"Dr. Kenley?" Alex asked him.
"Are you ok?" I asked him. He then completely dropped onto the floor.
"Jackson, hit the blue button. Behind you. The blue button!" Alex said to him. Jackson hit it while me and Alex went to Dr. Kenley.
"Code blue, second floor. Code blue, second floor." The P.A. announced. Alex started compressions. Bailey and Melinda entered the room.
"Oh, my god." I heard Melinda say.
"What happened?" Bailey asked as she rushed over to us.
"We don't know, he just fell over." I said to her as she crouched in front of us. Unfortunately, he was gone and there was a chance that Jackson would be traumatised. We continued to do a work up on Jackson after everything was sorted out.
"Sorry about your doc." Alex said to him.
"Whatever. Dr. Kenley was gonna sign this, before he died and everything. Can you two?" He asked us, as long as it was some kind of contract. I would sign it.
"What is it?" Alex asked him.
"I want to get a wish from the wish people. You have to have a doctor to sign it." He said to us, I'd seen a lot of kids with these back home. My mum would always sign them just in case.
"No. I'm not signing that." Alex said with a chuckle and a smile, he then looked at me. "Don't look at her, she's not gonna sign it either." Alex said to him I bent down to whisper in Jackson's ear.
"When he's gone, I'll sign it. Get a pen ready." I said before standing back up again.
"What was that?" Alex asked us, we both looked at each other.
"Nothing." We said at the same time.
"Come on. Look, if you sign, you can help me pick my wish. These are the ones kids have already done, like go one a circus trapeze, or be in the rodeo. Put stars by the ones you think would be cool, and X's by the ones you think are lame." Jackson said trying to tempt Alex. I swear trips to Disney was one of the many things you could do.
"There was no way Kenley was gonna sign that. It's fir kids with life-threatening diseases. You're not dying, just sick. Dude...The rodeo smells like horse crap. You're not missing anything." Alex said making Jackson smile. This was a new light from Alex, maybe he should become a pediatric surgeon. I smiled at Alex. We sent the blood up to the lab. Alex went off to get the results whilst I stayed with Bailey. When it was time I went to prep Jackson for surgery, when I got there Alex was already in there. Dr. Robbins, the pediatric surgeon was waiting for us along with Bailey.
"Ok. Karev, can you pull the retractor more?" Robbins said to Karev.
"Like that?" He asked her.
"Yeah. Great." She said to him, he did so and she looked. "Damn. Look at this. It's a mess. He'll have maybe 10 centimeters of bowel when we're done here." She said to us, could he even managed with that much.
"Woah. Can't we try a Bianchi procedure see if we can save more of it?" Bailey asked trying to suggest a procedure.
"Bowel's dead and the liver's cirrhotic. No saving anything." Robbins said, this poor kid.
"But..." Bailey said before she was interrupted.
"Dr. Bailey. This kid, he should have been on a transplant list a year ago. It's a miracle he's still alive." Robbins said, I really wish I signed the thing earlier. Bailey walked out the room. She was not happy.
"Dr. Robbins..." I started before she cut me off.
"Arizona. Just call me Arizona." She said to me.
"So, Arizona, are we just going to put him on the transplant list?" I asked her.
"It's the only way he has a chance at living." She said to me. We sorted out Jackson's bowel before getting him back up to his room. Me and Alex then went to lunch.
"Hey, Cristina, can you mention that it's Izzie's birthday today? 'Cause someone should do something about it." George said while looking at Alex.
"I myself am planning a party with balloons, streamers, and a bouncy house. Of course Y/n is helping me decorate." Cristina said while looking at the two of us.
"That's a good idea. But you know what? Alex should do something about it." George said to us.
"I know hose-bag. I got it under control." Alex said to us, I'm sure he did.
"Bouncy house?" Cristina said to us.
"Bouncy houses are the best." I said with a smile. Iz came and sat at our table.
"Is he here?" I heard Alex asked. Who was this 'he?'
"Who?" I heard Iz asked. I couldn't hear the rest of their conversation. Mer then joined us with a sigh. She then sighed again.
"Oh, I'm done here." George said before standing up and walking away.
"Dude from MRI was all freaked out about death row guy. Couldn't put his cuffs in the the machine so they had to Velcro him to the table. Tech thought he was gonna tear it all off and storm the booth like the Hulk or something." Alex said, I'd heard about the guy but I was curious to know what he did.
"What did he do?" Iz asked Mer.
"He laid there and had that MRI." Alex said making me roll my eyes.
"Not that you dummy. But if he's on death row that must be serious." I said to Mer.
"Did he mow down a bunch of people with a machine gun?" Iz asked, he may have. But we'd never know.
"Probably found his wife with a hooker and a handyman." Cristina said, he'd only be on death row if he killed them all.
"They don't give the death penalty for crimes of passion. People understand that." Iz said, I mean that was true.
"All crimes are crimes of passion. There's always a reason. People don't do stuff like that because they forget it's illegal." Mer said making Mer leave and Sadie joined us.
"When you kill her, is it gonna be a crime of passion?" Iz asked making Mer laugh.
"But seriously, would it be?" I asked her with a smile.
"That still hasn't blown over?" Sadie asked her.
"No it's not a big deal. We had a fight. She took it too far. That's all." Mer said to us. We all get like that sometimes.
"You want to know what I think?" Sadie asked her.
"Not really." Mer said with a smile.
"Well, I should get going." I said with a smile, I then stood up and left. I reported to Arizona to see if there was any news on a liver. Unfortunately there wasn't. I was going to hope that a liver would come to us but that would mean someone would have to die. After awhile we were all paged by Arizona, when I say all I mean me, Alex and Bailey.
"Why is she shaking her head?" Bailey asked us.
"Jackson's post-op LFTs." Alex said to us.
"This kid needs to be put on the transplant list today." Arizona said to us, I thought he was already on the list.
"For a liver and an intestine." I said to her.
"Exactly correct." She said to me with a smile.
"I think we should get another opinion." Bailey said, Arizona nodded her head and wrote something down.
"Norman McCale at Hopkins. Head of Pediatric Surgery. Tell him Arizona sent you. When he tells you Jackson needs a transplant, which he'll do two minutes into the call, put him on the list." Arizona said snapping at Bailey, this was getting good.
"There's no need to snap at me." Bailey said to her, a hint of anger in her tone.
"There is, actually. You've been second guessing me from the moment I arrived. I get it. You liked Dr. Kenley, you trusted him, and I'm a stranger with a ponytail. But I'm not the problem, the patient is. So how about you stop thinking about me and start focusing on him. Jackson needs a transplant. If we keep wasting time, he's not gonna make it." Arizona said before walking off.
"Bailey, I hate to admit but she's right." I said before following after her. We did manage to get Jackson on the transplant list and all we had to do was wait. Bailey, got me and Alex to go with her to tell Jackson and Melinda.
"Now transplants aren't easy, that's the bad news. But the good news is, you've got a crackerjack new doctor. Um, I spoke to one of the most respected kid surgeons in the country, and he thinks she's the best there is. So she's gonna take good care of you. We all are." Bailey said with a smile, the room then went silent. "Why don't we go out and sign some of the transplant consent forms?" Bailey asked Melinda before they both left. The was silent, Jackson got his wish leaflet and held it towards us. Alex took it and signed it.
"Stars and X's." He said to us before we started looking at them.
"A trip to China, I've always wanted to go. That could be fun." I said to him with a smile.
"I get air sick." He said to us.
"We already covered the rodeo." Alex said, we just sat in there doing Star's and X's. When the shift ended I decided to bring Caleb home so he could live with me for good. I wanted to be near him just in case anything happened to him. I also felt more prepared to look after him then before.
