85. Rise Up

This morning I was rudely awaken by my alarm. When I arrived at work I was hoping not to be on a case with an inoperable tumour. But yet again I wouldn't have a choice over that. We all changed before we all had to meet up at the same place seeing as Webber was introducing us to something. "Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce...Stan. State-of-the-art computerized patient simulator. Stan can educate you in airway management, trauma assessment and care. He breathes, he pulsates, he seizes, he hemorrhages, he secretes. And he speaks. Hello Stan." Webber said to us, Stan was the most creepiest thing I've ever seen in my life.

"Hello, doctor. I'm not feeling well." Stan said in a creepy robotic voice.

"Stan will tell you what he needs. He's more forgiving than most patients. You kill him, he'll keep coming back for more. Make good use of him, people." Webber said before walking out, we all turned around and looked at Bailey.

"We're operating on robots now?" George asked her, I really didn't want to. It was creepy.

"Can we please go back to pigs?" Alex asked, I didn't like the sound of that either.

"What about people?" Cristina asked her, now that sounded like a better plan.

"When the chief decides which one of you gets to do the first solo surgery, you'll want to be ready." Bailey said to us. It looks like Stan is going to be my new best friend.

"Solo surgery?" I asked before we all started talking over each other.

"I do not know what it will be, I do not know when it will be. I do know that the winner should be prepared to do any surgical procedure, and will choose one intern to scrub in. So practice your skills, impress your attending and do not make me look stupid. Grey, Stevens, you're with Hahn. Yang, Y/l/n, the pit. Karev and O'Malley, your skills lab today so you can take turns getting to know..." Bailey said while the rest of us all left the room. Thank the lord I wasn't with Stan. Instead I would be stuck with doing sutures. Which I guess wouldn't be so bad.

"That Stan thing is terrifying." I said to Cristina as we were walking to the pit.

"It's creepy but innovative." She said to me in return, we started getting paged and got ready to meet the ambulance. We took him to the trauma room and to our surprise Hunt was in there.

"Unidentified male, mid-thirties. Lost vitals in the field, shocked him into sinus tach. Possible fractures of both arms, unstable pelvis." The paramedic told us, looks like we might need Callie for this.

"Ok, move on three. One, two, three. Good, good." I said before we all moved onto the bed.

"Open right tib/fib, rigid abdomen." The paramedic said. If this man lived, we need all hands on deck.

"What doesn't this guy have?" Cristina asked them.

"Found him under a freeway overpass. Cops thinks someone threw him over." She told us, or he might've jumped or something.

"After they beat him half to death?" Cristina asked before she left. I looked at Cristina at then at the guy.

"We might need all hands on deck." I said to Cristina.

"Seems like the only option." Lexie said to me. We all checked him.

"Dr. Webber, regarding the solo surgery, I presume it's going to be a general surgery. I just wanted to be prepared..." Cristina started. I didn't even realise that Webber was here.

"You'll know when you all know." He said answering what Cristina was saying. "And one more thing. If my ER reports are right, you've been working for three days straight. When do you sleep?" Webber said while turning his attention back to Hunt.

"Do you keep tabs on all your attending or just the new guys?" Hunt asked back.

"His IV blew." Lexie told us, crap.

"Yang, he needs that access now!" Hunt said while walking over to us.

"I'm doing it, sir." Cristina said back to him, I don't think that Hunt even knew my name.

"This will buy him some time until one of you gets that line in." Hunt said before doing something.

"Yeah." Me and Cristina said at the same time.

"If you were less worried about winning contests like Y/l/n, you might have thought of it." Hunt said before releasing some of the pressure in the guys chest. Maybe Hunt did know my name after all. I finally got the IV in and we continued with looking at the extent of the guys injuries. I paged for Torres and she came in to assist.

"What's a guy have to do to get a beating this bad?" Callie asked. They could be a list but there's no point trying to guess.

"Maybe he'll tell us when he wakes up." Owen said, that sounded good.

"Let's hope he makes it that long." Callie said.

"Hopefully he does, he might have a family that we need to call." I said to her.

"Three, run these to the lab, and then go by the morgue and get the forms for an unclaimed body." Cristina said. She was so full of hope.

"He's gonna need a chest tube, right? I was just hoping, with the solo surgery coming up- -" Lexie started before Cristina cut her off.

"With the solo surgery coming up, your job is to impress me. So, go." Cristina said before sending Lexie on her way.

"Dr. Yang, with the solo surgery coming up, your job is to impress me. You're planning for this man's death whereas Dr. Y/l/n is fighting for his life." Hunt said, looks like I might have a shot of doing this surgery.

"I was trying to be prepared, I'm sorry." Cristina said to him.

"I can't use sorry. I could use another doctor. Be one." Owen said to her, me and Callie looked at each other with a shared expression. We then continued on with the patient. "Holed compression, we got a rhythm." Owen said to us.

"We got to get him up to surgery. He's bleeding through his leg splint." Callie said to us.

"That's gonna cause an issue if we don't fix that." I said to them.

"So the chief asked me to watch the second years for the solo surgery. What's your take, as a class?" Owen asked Callie.

"I'm not listening, and also just act like I'm not here." I said to Callie making her smile.

"They're a mixed bag. Yang's very good. She's...hardcore. She'll be a cardio god. She's my roommate, actually." Callie said to him, I completely forgot about that.

"And Stevens and Y/l/n?" Owen asked her.

"Stevens, she's smart. Good with patients, very compassionate, supposedly. She did sleep with my ex-husband while we were still married." Callie told him return, I bit my lip when she said the last part.

"You know what? I'm more interested in the doctor part." Owen said to Callie with a smile.

"Right. Obviously. Of course you are. Y/l/n she's smart. She doesn't give up with trying all she can do. She's going to be a hardcore ortho god one day. She also thinks of things before anyone can and she's read a lot of reports and articles so she always knows on how to do things differently and more efficiently." Callie said, I smiled a little. I didn't realise I was like that but that makes me sound like an amazing doctor. I saw Cristina walk back into the room.

"New scans, good." Owen said while walking over to her. Cristina hummed in response.

"Splenic subscapsular hematoma- -" She started before Owen cut her off.

'I can look. Go update his chart." He said back to her. Me and Callie both looked over at him. After a while Mark came in to give a consult. We still had to work on getting this guy stable. After a while Callie left leaving me with Hunt. We didn't really talk we just made sure that this guy was getting closer to being stable. When it was time to head to the OR I was told to page Cristina. The surgery was going well. For the time being. "Yang, suction here, please. Sloan's coming in for the mandibular repair?" Owen said to her, me and Callie were working on the guys leg. Me and Callie both cleared our throats.

"Sorry about before. Everybody's up in everybody's else's business here." Callie said with a wink at the end.

"Better to keep things professional, if you can." Owen said to her, that's a bit hard to do around here.

"Yes. One minute you're working with people, and then you're friends with them and then...whatever. Suddenly there's all this pressure to define what you are, like it's all black and white. You are this or you're that." Callie continued on, did something happen between her and someone else.

"You are aware that you're doing it again, right?" Hunt asked her before Mark spoke up.

"Dr. Hung? How's our mystery man?" Mark asked us.

"Still with us. He's a fighter." Hunt responded, this guy really was.

"Hate to be the other guy. Callie. Dr. Yang, I know cracking chests is more your thing, but you'd be surprised how exciting it can be when I manipulate a little skin." Mark said, that was a bit creepy.

"Actually, Dr. Yang, why don't you scrub out. We've got enough hand in here." Owen said sending her out.

"Okay." She said before leaving. I was glad that it was just me in this surgery now. We got him out of surgery and put him into a recovery room. We had done what we could for now. I got paged a while later from Lexie, when I got there Cristina was already there. Along with Alex.

"What's happening?" I asked them.

"He's coding and someone didn't do a chest tube." Cristina said why looking at me, I looked at Lexie.

"Why didn't you put in a chest tube?" I asked her.

"I don't know how." She answered.

"What do you mean you don't know how? I learned that my first week." Cristina said to Lexie.

"Yes, you learned. You know, but I'll never know because you not only won't let me try one. But you hog all our robots and you steal all our corpses!" Lexie shouted, I mean she was right with what she was saying.

"Dude, I think you broke her. Vitals are stable, for now. Was there this much blood in his urine before?" Alex asked, he held up the bag. There definitely wasn't.

"No." Lexie answered.

"He's going to need a bedside cystogram." Cristina said after I'd paged Hunt.

"Dibs on that." Alex said to us, there was no calling dibs over a man's life.

"No you don't. It's ours just like his bladder repair is ours too." I said to him, meaning me and Cristina seeming as this was our case to begin with.

"Me and Yang traded, I get his bladder." Alex said to me, so she's trading cases now.

"We never traded. To prove you wrong, next time he crashes, you put in his chest tube." Cristina said to both me to begin with and then Lexie.

"Get away from that man right now!" Hunt said to us all, I stood back and looked at him.

"He was crashing, so we upped his dopamine..." Alex said before Hunt cut him off.

"Are you deaf, Karev? I said step away from him." Hunt said to Alex.

"We were saving his life..." Alex started again.

"What you did was pick over him like vultures, like a bunch of children fighting over toys. Except from Y/l/n, who was actually doing her job. What you did was you treated a man fighting to live as if he was dead. You have no sense, no decency and no respect! Just get out. Just get out of here. Except for you Y/l/n." Hunt shouted. I just stayed with Hunt as we continued to work on the guy. "Can you stay here and monitor him?" Hunt asked me.

"Of course, if anything happens I'll page you if anything happened." I said to Hunt with a nod.

"Thank you." He said before walking out. About an hour later the unidentified man's wife came in. I found out that his name was Tom. I was on call tonight which would be good in case something happened.
