172. Flight
When I woke up the ground was hard and cold. I felt a pain coming from both of my legs and I screamed. I couldn't even stand up. I'd definitely broken them. I felt a pressure on chest and saw a seat on it. A plane seat. I pushed it off with all my strength. I screamed in pain pushing it off. The plane crash was something I never thought I'd survive from. "Meredith! Cristina! Derek! Mark! Arizona! Lexie! Anyone?!" I shouted but I heard no response. All I wanted was for someone to be there. I felt so numb. I just sat there.
"Y/n! Y/n! It's Cristina can't you stand up." She said to me and I looked at her.
"No. I can't move. My legs won't move. They're broken." I said to her and she looked at me.
"I'm going to pick you up. You're not that heavy I can carry you. I've done it before." She said to me and she put her arms around me. "Okay, three, two, one." She said to me and picked me up. She only had one arm that worked but she still carried me. All the way to where Arizona was. Placing me next to her. She was crying. I saw Mark.
"Y/n are you okay? Jackson will kill me if your not okay. You're bleeding. Are you hurt?" He asked me panicking. I saw that I had blood running down my legs.
"No, no. I lost the baby." I said to him and he hugged me. He did nothing but hug me. I needed Jackson but instead I had Mark. I couldn't stop crying.
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" Cristina shouted at Arizona. It went silent. Mark stood up. He needed to find Lexie. There was a banging noise.
"Do you hear...Do you hear that sound? Where is that sound coming from?" Meredith asked us all. I didn't know.
"There. It's coming from over there." Arizona said before going. Arizona then sat up.
"Are you okay?" I asked her and she looked at me.
"I can see my bone." She said to me and I ripped open my bottoms. My legs were just red. No bones thankfully.
"Is somebody there? I can't..." the pilot of the plane said to us and I looked at Arizona.
"We're here. Your not alone." I said to him. He needed to know he had people here.
"Oh, y...we're...We're here. We're here." Arizona said to him. All I wanted was to be home.
"I can't...I'm...stuck in here." He said to us and he shouldn't be trying to move.
"Oh, don't do that. Don't do that. Stop. Stop." Arizona said to him. He was trying to leave.
"Don't move at all." I said to him. It was down to him whether he wanted to move.
"I-I can't get outta here." He said to us and I can't imagine how scary it must be for him.
"What's your name?" Arizona asked him.
"Jerry." He said to us. It was nice to know his name.
"Jerry, I'm Arizona and the other lady is Y/n. I don't want you to move, ok? 'Cause you could...You could injure yourself more." Arizona said to us and all I wanted was to be at home.
"The controls just...I...I think one of the engines quit. I...Is anybody else alive?" He asked us. I don't think he'd want that answer. I still hadn't seen Lexie or Derek.
"Yes." I said to him, I couldn't say how many.
"Um...Yeah. Yeah, we're all alive. Well, I-I...I-I think we're all alive." Arizona said and I looked at her.
"I don't know where Derek and Lexie are." I said to her, I wanted to know if they were ok.
"You're all surgeons." He said to us and I started to laugh. Like Arizona. "What's funny?" He asked the two of us.
"I am, um, I'm married to an orthopedic surgeon, and I'm starting at my bone. And it's not...it's not funny. I-I think I'm in a little bit of sh-sh-shock." Arizona said to us.
"For me I'm an orthopedic surgeon and I am stuck. I can't move. And before I left I found out I was pregnant and my fiancé was the happiest of all time and now I have to disappoint him. We were meant to be going to California. I can't help the Rams if I can't even move." I said before laughing. The shock had definitely got to me.
"Ok." He said to the both of us.
"But really, I'm fine. It's ok. If I could just get myself to stop laughing." Arizona said to us. I just couldn't stop laughing.
"Arizona? Y/n?" Jerry asked the two of us.
"Yeah? Yeah?" We both asked him and we were still laughing.
"I can't feel my legs." He said to us and we stopped laughing. He was paralyzed. His whole life would be over. "Yeah. I knew that was bad." He said to us and I didn't know what to say.
"I want to go home. I want to hold my son." I said to Arizona and I started to cry again. I didn't even know if I'd see him again.
"I know. I know. I want to see and hold Sofia again. But Callie and Jackson. They will report us not coming home. Okay, someone will notice." She said reassuring me. I didn't think that would happen. Especially since the surgery would length. Then complications would come into place.
"I hope so." I said to her. I can't even imagine what my family would think. They would think they lost someone else in a plane crash. I saw Cristina come over to us. She walked around looking for things. She then came back with supplies to make us splints. In the meantime I'd turned my coat and put it on the other way. I was cold.
"I'm gonna try and splint these." She said to us and I looked at her shaking my head.
"I'll do it, Cristina." I said to her.
"No, I can do it. I can do it. Uh, Jerry needs C-spine stabilization." Arizona said to her, he was the one that needed help. We could help ourselves.
"Who's Jerry?" She asked the two of us.
"He's the pilot." I said to her and I looked at the window.
"How are you doing there, Jerry?" Arizona asked him, I was hoping he was ok.
"I give us four hours tops before they find us. There's a transmitter in the plane that lets out a squawk that should lead 'em right to us." He said and Cristina went to go and check on him.
"Did you find Derek?" Arizona asked her. I was hoping he was ok. Along with Lexie.
"Uh, not yet. Uh, Jerry, uh, do you, uh, have any tape?" Cristina asked, how I was hoping that we'd all go home.
"Uh, yeah. In the bulkhead. In the cabinet to your left. There's a flare gun in there, too." Jerry said and that was our chance of being found.
"Yes." I heard her get out.
"You hear a chopper, you fire it straight up." He said to Cristina. Hopefully one would come soon.
"And Lexie?" Arizona asked her.
"Please say she's ok." I said to her. She had to be.
"Not good." She said and I just wanted to cry again. I kept stopping from crying and I just felt numb afterwards. "Oh, great. Great, great, great, great, great.! I heard her say. From there I started to splint both of my legs. Screaming in pain each time. "Is there a first aid kit?" I heard her ask Jerry.
"A...Yeah, a big one. In the cabinet on your right, behind the cabinet." He said to her but the right side was no longer here. We had no Med kit.
"There's no cabinet there." Cristina said, at this point I lost all hope.
"Just tell her to hand on for another four hours." He said and I couldn't do this for another four hours.
"Great." Cristina said and I heard her rummaging around.
"Hey, hey, wait. Don't leave! I-I can't feel my legs. That's because I'm trapped, right? I mean, I'm gonna be ok, right? I'm not paralyzed. I'm gonna walk again. I'm gonna be ok, right?" He asked and I didn't even know what was going on in that plane anymore.
"I'm sorry." She said before she came outside. I continued to secure my legs. I was trying to go to my happy place.
"Cristina. I can't find him. I looked everywhere. I can't find him." I could hear Meredith say.
"Meredith, we'll find him. Believe me." I said to her. He had to be.
"Maybe he's fine. Maybe he went for help." Cristina said and maybe it was, hopefully he was looking for help.
"Maybe, but I gotta...I gotta keep looking." She said to Cristina and I. I wish that I could see her.
"No, Meredith. You should come...Help Lexie." Cristina said and that's when I knew it was bad. Lexie was probably dying and I couldn't say goodbye to her. I could hear Meredith's sobs in the distance. That meant to me that Lexie was gone. I couldn't help but silently cry. I was hoping that Derek would be ok now. Cristina then came back. She'd told us that Lexie has passed and that Mark was with her.
"I found it!" She shouted, what was it?
"The first aid box?" Arizona asked her.
"The transmitter?" I asked her.
"My shoe." She shouted, I was glad that she'd found it. I then looked at my hand. My ring. My engagement ring. It was gone.
"Is she gonna be ok?" Jerry asked us and I started to pat the ground around me.
"She's not barefoot anymore." Arizona said to the two of us.
"Well, I guess that's something." Jerry said to us, I looked at Arizona.
"I can't find my engagement ring. It's gone." I said to Arizona and she looked at me. Taking my hand.
"We will find it and even if we don't, Jackson will forgive you." She said to me and I knew he would. She then started to cough up blood.
"But for now we need to look after each other." I said before putting my head on her shoulder. It felt nice that I could spend time with Arizona, my best friends wife. But not under these circumstances. They needed to be better circumstances.
"Tell me about the wedding have you decided on anything?" She asked me trying to keep things flowing.
"We haven't decided on anything, the flight was my planning." I said to her. We kept talking that was until we saw Mark getting dragged back was he ok.
"Mark?" Arizona asked and I looked at them.
"Is he ok?" I asked them while trying to hold tears in. That's when I saw Derek with them.
"What happened?" Arizona asked them all.
"Tamponade. Mer did a pericardiocentesis." Cristina said and I couldn't even believe that this was our reality.
"Oh, my god." Arizona got out. He needed to live for Sofia. She couldn't not have a dad.
"He's holding on for now." Mer said and Arizona looked around.
"Where's Lexie? Where's Lexie?" Arizona asked and given the silence I knew that answer.
"Lexie's dead." Mark said and I started to silently cry again. I'd lost another friend.
"So we should get a fire started." Mer said, her voice cracking. She'd lost her sister. She needed a hug.
"Oh, I've got...I've got the matches. We have five left." Cristina said and she handed the matches to Derek.
"Make it big so they see." Meredith said to him. We needed a whole forest fire at this point.
"What happened to the four hours, Jerry?" Arizona asked, she was about to cry again.
"It's been more than four hours." Meredith said and I looked at the sky.
"It's nearly nightfall. It's going to be dark soon." I said to them, I was hungry, cold and thirsty.
"Shh. Listen." Jerry said to us all.
"What does that mean?" Arizona asked, we weren't getting found. "I mean, does that mean that they're not coming for us? I mean, you said four hours. You said four hours tops." Arizona said to Jerry. This is what happens when your last goodbye wasn't the best.
"Chopper!" Jerry said and I heard it. We were saved.
"Oh, my God. It's a helicopter!" Cristina shouted. I was so thankful to hear one.
"Hey!" Meredith shouted.
"Help!" I shouted.
"Help!" We all started to scream. Even if the couldn't hear us.
"Where is it?" Meredith asked us.
"I don't see it. I don't see it." Cristina shouted at us.
"Help!" We all shouted again.
"Get the flare gun! The flare gun!" Jerry shouted and this was our only way out of here.
"In the bag! In the bag!" Arizona and I both said to her.
"Oh, God, shoot it!" Cristina shouted. We needed this to work.
"We're down here!" Arizona shouted and Mer got ready to fire the gun.
"Come back!" Cristina shouted. Mer fired the gun but nothing. It was empty.
"No! No!" I shouted this was our one chance and it didn't work.
"Why isn't it working?" Meredith asked us all and I didn't know.
"Shoot it again! Shoot it again!" Cristina shouted and I was hoping that it would work.
"Give it to me." Derek said and he took the gun.
"Help!" Arizona and I shouted again. The gun wasn't working. We were done for. "Help!" We shouted again.
"Oh, my God, no!" Cristina shouted as it went away.
"Help!" Arizona shouted but it was too late.
"Oh, my god. No, no! Come back!" Cristina shouted.
"Why! No! Come back!" I shouted as I broke down again.
"No, no, no!" Arizona shouted. I was wondering what everyone was thinking back home. It wasn't long until the night set in. The fire was going and k was feeling numb. I was pulled over to the small fire pit and I rested my head on Meredith's shoulder.
"Hey, they don't know where we are. They don't know where we are. It's because the transmitter's probably been damaged in the crash. If the transmitter's damaged..." I heard Jerry say to Derek. We were stuck here.
"We could be here for days." Derek said to him and I couldn't be here for days.
"Yeah." He said back. I looked forward.
"Zola." Meredith said and I looked at her.
"Caleb." I said. I couldn't make my son an orphan. I just couldn't.
"Owen has got to have figured out we're missing. I know he sent someone." Cristina said and I looked at them.
"I had a miscarriage. Before getting on the plane I found out I was pregnant and now...now I'm not." I said to them before crying. Mer hugged me and Cristina put her hand on me. All I needed was for me to not get on the dumb plane. I should've stayed behind. I wasn't even going to sleep.
"Think of something else." Meredith asked us.
"I'm hungry." Cristina said we'd all wrapped up as warm as we could be. But it wasn't helping.
"I have a stick of gum." Meredith said to her.
"I don't want gum. I want food." Cristina said before the fire went out. That was it.
"No." I said as it was gone.
"Shoot. Great. We have one match left." Cristina said and we saw that Mer was asleep. We shook her awake.
"Don't sleep on us." I said to her.
"Hey. No sleeping. You have to stay awake." Cristina said to her.
"Ok." She said to us, I saw that Derek was asleep.
"Derek. Derek. You, too. I want everyone conscious!" Cristina shouted and I wasn't falling asleep anytime soon.
"Mer, light the match. Careful. It's our last one." Meredith said to us and she went to light it.
"Ok." She said and it fizzled out immediately. We were done for. We were completely done for. Who knew if we were ever getting out of here. Maybe this was our new reality. As I'm writing this I'm realizing my pen is running out of ink. Everyone here doesn't know why I'm writing all of this down in a journal. A journal which is making keep my peace at home. One that I can read back and see the things I did. The pain I'm facing is something I don't want to wish onto anyone and it's getting harder and harder for me to hold...
