155. Put Me In, Coach
Today was different. Completely, we were playing baseball currently. I say that but Cristina, Mer and I were cloud watching. "That one looks like an islet cell." Mer said as she pointed it out.
"I can see it, it's uncanny." I said to her with a smile.
"Which one?" Cristina asked us and I pointed to it.
"That one. It's all puffy and insulin producing." Mer said to us and it did. Which was strange to see.
"It looks like a cloud." Cristina said to us.
"It looks like an islet cell or maybe a buffalo." Mer said to us and I saw another cloud.
"That one looks like a frog." I said to her and that's when Cristina spoke up.
"I have no imagination, Mer and Y/n. Teddy sucked it out of me." Cristina said to us, I couldn't imagine how that much feel.
"Let's not go there. We're just gonna believe that everything's gonna be ok. We're keeping the faith." Mer said to her.
"And trust me, all of us know it's going to work out. You just need to find that hope." I said to her and who would've thought that cloud watching would be so fun.
"Yeah. She did say that she has something great for me today. What are you on?" Cristina asked us all and I looked at her.
"Back on Ortho." I said with a smile, I was so glad to be back again.
"Cabbage patch." Mer said to us.
"Please be joking." I said to her.
"OB still? You gotta get out of those pink scrubs." Cristina said to her, she did. This wasn't healthy for her.
"Why? Bailey's got me blackballed from every surgery. Besides, it's quiet. I get to work on the trial stuff." She said to us, but she'd be able to.
"I thought Bailey told you to stay away from the trial stuff." Cristina said to her. I wonder how the game was going on.
"I know, but I just can't help it because I feel like I'm this close to..." Mer started before we saw a ball fly past us.
"Hey! That coulda hit us." Mer got out.
"That could've seriously hurt us." I said to Alex as he ran after the ball.
"Careful." Cristina got out as we all sat up.
"Nice hustle." He said to us, what hustle would that be.
"You know, I'm think this is just more avoiding thinking about Zola." Cristina said to her.
"And if you are then that's ok." I said to her reassuringly.
"Did you hear something?" Alex asked her and I really wish that she did. Maybe put her and Derek at ease.
"No. We've bugged Janet till she's sick of us, and she doesn't really know anything, so we just have to wait for the court to give us a hearing date, and we're just..." Mer said and we all looked at her.
"Keeping the faith." Me and Cristina said at the same time to her.
"Keeping the faith." Mer said to him.
"Karev, throw the ball!" Owen shouted and he threw it back into the game. Where everything was out of earshot. But I did witness Mark kissing his new girlfriend. We were currently preparing for a game with Seattle Presbyterian. Mum wasn't joining in as she has people to see. "Yang, Grey, Y/l/n, you could at least stand up." Owen shouted at us. Mer and I just laughed.
"Hi, honey." Cristina waved over to him.
"I'm definitely not standing." I said as I led back down again.
"Yeah, that's not for us." Cristina said as we all looked back up at the clouds. Soon everyone started to leave and we stood up. "Is that it? Are we done?" Cristina called over to him, I think we were.
"Just...Wait! Everyone. No, no. Wait." Owen shouted before the chief at Presbyterian blew the whistle.
"All right, guys. Come on. Let's do it." He shouted but our game was over. I then went to go and see what was awaiting us. Callie and I got paged immediately for a trauma. We just waited on Owen to show up.
"One, two, three." Callie and I got out as we moved the patient slightly.
"Ok, what do we have?" Owen asked as he walked in. More like, what didn't we have?
"Carl Shatler, sanitation worker, mid 30's. Fell off the back of a garbage truck, then hit by a car backing out of a driveway." The EMT said before she left. This guy had gone through a lot.
"Ok, vitals are stable but he has multiple contusions, scalp lac, and obvious hand injuries." Callie said as she read the chart. This was going to be a long day.
"Carl? Carl, I'm Dr. Hunt. Do you know where you are? Can you hear me? GCS 10, and pupils are equal and reactive. I'm gonna need the portable x-ray and ultrasound." Owen said, I hadn't even realized that April was here. Callie and I looked at his hand.
"Right away." April said to him.
"This is messy." I said looking at his hand, I couldn't see much that was salvageable.
"Ooh, this hand's hamburger. He's gonna lose some of this." Callie said to him, we couldn't save much of it.
"Oh, God. No! No!" Carl said as he had awoken. It was good to know that he was conscious now.
"Calm down. Kepner, where is that ultrasound? Give us some room here, Torres." Owen said but it's not like Callie could move much. The hand hasn't been made stable.
"Ok, I just need to stabilize the hand, and then I will..." Callie said before she was stopped by Owen.
"I said, give us some room. The hand is not the priority right now." Owen said and Callie took her gloves off. I did the same.
"Fine. Page us when you need us." Callie said and I took my glove of as well. I wasn't impressed by what Owen was doing. It was until Callie paged me to Mr. Shatler's room. "Considering all you went through, you were lucky, really." Callie said as I walked in and I knew what this was about.
"That sounds like a setup for bad news." He said and I couldn't imagine what he was thinking.
"Uh...some of the bones on your hand were pulverized. There was extensive nerve and tissue damage. We'll know more once we get in the OR and clean it up. But there's a chance you could lose these two fingers." Callie pointed out and Carl instantly grabbed his bag. "Look, I know it's a shock, but you survived a terrible accident..." Callie started before he pulled a scalpel out on us.
"Sir, what are you doing? Put that down." I said to him but he wasn't taking to this easily.
"Whoa! Holy crap. What are you...What are you doing?" Callie asked and he dropped it immediately putting his hand up.
"No, no, that's not a weapon, ok? That's a spitsticker. I do woodcarving, wood prints. I carry this stuff with me 'cause I have a lot of downtime on my job." He said to us and now I could see why the hand was so important to him.
"Ok. Um...I'm sorry. It's just, you kinda...and that scared the hell outta us." Callie said and he smiled at us.
"Very sorry for the misunderstanding." I said to him with a smile and nod. Listen once you get shot, anything you see is a weapon.
"I was just looking for my phone to call my wife." He said to us with a smile. But that would be hard with his one working hand.
"Ok. Are you gonna freak out if I stick my hand in here again?" He asked the two of us and we looked at him.
"No." We both said to him. We saw all his prints and they were good.
"These are really good. You have a talent." I said to him with a smile. I found it nice seeing what someone could do.
"Wow. This...This is gorgeous. Can I..." Callie said as she saw the work that was coming out.
"Yeah." He said with a smile and Callie looked in the book.
"Wow. Do you...Do you sell this stuff?" Callie asked, if he did I would definitely buy some.
"No, no. Collecting garbage pays the bills. This...This keeps me sane. Or it did...Till today. You might want to leave the room. She's gonna be pretty upset." He said to us and that's when Callie and I shared a look. We were going to try and save those fingers.
"Make sure you tell her that we're...we're something of an artist ourselves." Callie said and we both smiled. I looked at Callie when we walked out b
"So, what's the plan?" I asked her and she looked at me with a smile.
"Let's say a magician never reveals her secrets." She said to me with a smile. She then noticed something was wrong with me. "What's up with you and Jackson? Is everything okay I don't see you both together that much." She said to me and I leaned on the nurses station desk.
"Let's say I asked him to move in a few weeks ago and he said yes. But he still hasn't and keeps saying he will." I said to her and and she looked at me. I knew what that look meant.
"Give him time." She said to me and I was called into the office. Nearly everyone was gone. I saw Henry and Owen.
"Y/n, catch." Owen said to me and I caught my jersey.
"Thanks it's a large but I'll take it." I said with a smile.
"Good and also you're- -" Henry started before my pager went off. Scrub in time.
"Going to the OR, I know. I'll see you at the game." I said to him before I went down there. I didn't realize April was scrubbing in as well.
"Ok, so this will hold his hand in place so I can see the tendon and nerve gaps..." Callie started as she was teaching us but she was cut off.
"What the Chief doesn't realize is that a lot of work I do makes it possible for these surgeries to take place. I mean, all the staffing and the scheduling...I mean, so ok, maybe I'm not in the OR all the time..." April started but we couldn't talk about that. We were saving a man's hand.
"April." We both said to her.
"But I..." She started and Callie looked at her.
"Do you want to be an administrative assistant? Is that what makes your heart sing?" Callie asked her and April looked down. Clearly Ortho didn't sing for her.
"No, of course not." She said to us.
"Then stop being a whiner. Stop hiding behind paperwork. If you love it, do it. Just get in the OR. Ok? Don't sleep, don't eat. Just do this. Here." Callie said before handing the tools over to April, I'd be mad but April needed to have a good outcome. Especially since I was +15 and no bad outcomes.
"You want me to place the k-wire?" April asked her.
"Will it make your heart sing?" Callie asked her and I could tell she had a smile.
"Yes. Yeah, right. Ok, placing the wire." April said and already it was wrong.
"Ok. You're a little too far to the left." Callie said, that was a nearly.
"Ok, I got it. Sorry." She said to Callie.
"There you go. Right there. Good. That's all right." Callie said that was before the monitor started beeping erratically.
"I didn't do anything. I swear." April said to us and I know she didn't.
"Damn it. No, just stop. What's going on?" Callie said and I hope this wasn't an issue that we caused.
'I don't know but his pressure's tanking. I'm hanging blood." The nurse said to us and this wasn't looking too good.
'It looks like electrical alternans." April said to us, we needed Teddy in here.
"He's tamponading. What the hell? Page cardio." Callie shouted. We needed to get this issue sorted. It wasn't long until Cristina came in.
"Freeze it. Intraluminal flap and pericardial effusion. Damn it. He's got a dissection." Cristina said to us and I looked at Callie. What were we going to do.
"That's why he fell. It must've started when he was on the truck. He probably passed out." Callie said to us and this wasn't looking good for Carl at all.
"We need to get Altman." Cristina said to us.
"Why? Do we need to go..." April started and I looked at her.
"Yes, we do." I said to her.
"Yes, we need to open him right now. Um, April, start the thoracotomy." Cristina said to her and I looked at April.
"What? Me? What are you doing?" April asked her, she was wasting time.
"Getting gowned and gloved. Crack his chest." Cristina said to her and I looked at April.
"April, your taking too much time. I'll do it." I said to her before doing the thoracotomy.
"But I'm assisting. It's all right. I got this. Y/n's got her thing done as well." Callie said to us and I looked at April.
"April keep working on the hand. I've got this aortic dissection. Don't worry." I said to her and I saw Cristina look back at me.
"Y/n, have you cracked the chest?" She asked me and I looked at her.
"I've done it don't worry." I said to her. I needed Cristina to take over. April came over. "Hey, take over and assist Cristina. I'll help Callie." I said to her and she nodded. I then sat opposite Callie.
"Ok, here's the tear." April said to her.
"Ok, open the aorta longitudinally. Now, transect proximal to the innominate artery." Cristina said talking April through it all.
"Are you sure you don't want to do this?" April asked her.
"You're already there." Cristina said before the door opened.
"All right. What do we have?" Teddy asked as she came in. Finally help was here.
"A thoracic aortic dissection. Kepner excised the defect and he's going to need a graft." Cristina said filling her in on everything.
"All right. Let me get scrubbed. You'll first assist. Torres and Y/l/n, can you clear out?" She said and I looked at her. No we couldn't.
"Can you work around us? I mean, we'll move if we have to, but..." Callie started, we were trying to let a man use his hand again. Save his fingers.
"Torres, Y/l/n, I'm trying to..." Teddy started but Callie cut him off.
"I know, but trust me, I'm saving his life, too. Can you work around us?" Callie asked and I got back to work.
"Fine." She said and she started to walk away. "Yang, why didn't you just start the graft?" She asked and this was going to be trouble.
"I didn't need to. Kepner had it." Cristina said, we then continued on with the surgery. It wasn't long until Teddy had finished with her part.
"Why didn't you just start the graft yourself? Why'd you wait?" Teddy asked Cristina and all I needed was to focus.
"Is this a trick question?" Cristiana asked her.
"No. I'm asking." She said to her.
"Oh, come on. Now I'm in trouble for waiting for you? You would've ripped me a new one if I did it myself." Cristina said to us and she was speaking the truth.
"Two months ago, you would've bodychecked Kepner in order to get this guy's chest, and now you let her just do the surgery? And you don't even like Kepner." Teddy said and April was sat right next to me.
"This is true. Y/l/n, doesn't like me much either." April said and I looked at her. So that was semi true.
"Yes, I could've done it myself, but she had it." Cristina said to Altman.
"Exactly." Teddy said to her.
"I'm done here." Cristina said and I knew that she'd been hurt.
"Ok, then could you girls take it outside? Some of us have a long way to go." Callie said to them and we continued our artwork. After hours of work we managed to save the hand. Callie went to display the artwork to him once he'd woken up. The next day it was same day. We were all watching Derek take his hit and the shortly after he was out.
"All right. All right. All right, Karev, you're on second. Let's get out there and get it back. We can do it." Owen said and I went over to Mer and Cristina.
"We are down 8-0." Mer said to us and I looked at her.
"We aren't catching up now." I said to her, this was impossible.
"We're screwed. He should just call it now." Alex said as he walked past us. He was mad, I was too.
"The new Chief's got something to prove. Hey...you still got your..." Cristina said to Mer and I looked at her.
"I think we could all do with it." I said to her with a smile.
"Yeah." Mer said as she pulled her flask out and passed it to Cristina. We then went to our area of the field. Me and her were both swigging it.
"Off-pump quintuple cabbage. Do you have a pen?" Cristina asked and I shook my head.
"Not on me." I said to her.
"What are you doing?" Mer asked her as I passed her the flask.
"I'm making a list. Teddy told me to make a bucket list of surgeries. I kept the faith, Mer. Who thought that would pay off?" Cristina asked us.
"I'm losing mine completely." I said to her, I was starting to think Jackson would never move in.
"It's not paying off for me. My faith is currently out of the office. Maybe I cured diabetes, though." Mer said to us and I looked at her with a smile.
"Your mom would've been proud." Cristina said to her with a smile.
"Very proud. Beaming with a smile proud." I said to her before we all started to laugh.
"No, she wouldn't." Mer said and she was right. So right.
"Probably not." Cristina and I said. We both gave Mer a high five. We then watched as everyone cheered and the ball was coming over to us.
"Oh my God! It's coming here!" Cristina said to us.
"I'm so close to it!" I shouted as I started to jump to get it.
"I got it! I got it!" Mer shouted but Bailey got it.
"Ball hog!" Cristina said to her.
"I had that." Mer said and she did. If we gave her another second.
"Oh, did you? Or were you gonna let it fall to the ground again?" Miranda asked her, I forgot that her and Mer still weren't on good terms.
"What is your problem with me?" Mer asked her. This was a fight waiting to happen.
"I beg your pardon?" Miranda asked her, Cristina and I shared a look.
"I don't want on your stupid trial. I just need to get it out of my head." Mer said and she was swaying.
"Mer, not now." I said to her as I grabbed her.
"No, Mer..." Cristina said as she grabbed her other side.
"Are you drunk?" Miranda asked us and we all looked at her.
"She is. We are." Cristina said to her with a smile.
"So, what is your problem?" Mer asked her and this was bad.
"What is my problem? All right, I'll tell you my problem. My problem is you. Everywhere I look, you're all I'm my trial, coming in my lab, opening my doors..." Miranda said before I looked over and saw the others stating. A fight then broke out. "You are reckless and irresponsible." Miranda added.
"But it was between me and the chief and my husband, so mind your own damn business! You are not the boss of me." Mer shouted at her. Cristina and I had an arm around each other. Watching this unfold.
"Oh, thank God for that. We're lucky to even be able to have a trial after you..." Miranda started before she was cut off.
"Shut up! The both of you. You, you have a lot of nerve, rubbing Meredith's nose in her mistakes when you can fix your own. Your trail is failing. Like it or not, you need her. And you, even your mom, the great Ellis Grey, made a mistake. You fixed her. Now fix your own. Get out of those ridiculous pink scrubs, and get back to the work you were born to do. Now the two of you are gonna figure out a way to work together, but you're not gonna do it on this field. You'll do it Monday morning in the lab. Is that clear?" Webber said to the two of them, during this team Cristina and I were passing a glove around it has the flask in. We were still drinking.
"Yes." Mer and Miranda said at the same time.
"Mmm-hmm." Miranda got out.
"Play ball!" Webber shouted and the game continued.
"Let's play!" I shouted with a smile.
"We playing ball." Cristina said with a smile. "Playing ball." She said again. It wasn't long until played stopped again.
"Bring it in. Huddle up." Owen said and we all stood together. "All right. I...I just want to say how proud I am of all of you. You are an incredible team." Owen said and I went over to Jackson. Wrapping my arm around his and placing my head on his arm. "I've watched you work together, solve problems together. I watched you teach each other and learn from each other. You step up when I need to and you...you do more than anyone asks you to do. You're the finest team I've ever been a part of." Owen said to us, he was drunk. Definitely.
"My God." Mark got out.
"What are you talking about?" Derek laughed out.
"That's really sad." Alex said and I had to agree with him.
"Beautiful." Mark said making me laugh.
"You don't think we actually have a shot at winning this." Callie said and I saw a smile creep on her face. We'd lost.
"What, this? This? No, no, no, we're screwed. You are all horrible at softball. But as doctors, you're pretty great, and I am proud just to get to lead you, and you're all here, so I just...I just wanted to tell you. But now...Now we're going down. So what do you say we go down fighting?" Owen said and he put his fist in the middle.
"Yes!" We all shouted and put our hands in the middle.
"One, two, three." Owen said counting us down.
"Go, team!" We all shouted and walked off I went back with Cristina and Mer. Lexie was now the pitcher.
"No arm! No arm. Hey! My grandma's not busy. She can pitch better than that." Mark's new piece shouted. That was before Lexie throw the ball at her.
"Right in the tit." I said to Cristina and Mer. Soon another fight broke out on the pitch. This made Cristina and I laugh. When the night came we all sat on the bleachers. I was cuddling into Jackson whilst having a drink.
"Thank you, guys, for letting me be your ringer. Although, I didn't really ring much. It was more like a thunk, but..." Henry got out but we still had a good time. That was the important thing.
"All right, will you take me home?" Teddy asked him.
"I will take you home." He said to Teddy. I looked at Jackson.
"I gotta go and see how Caleb's doing, see what concoction his made." I said to him before laughing. He kissed me.
"I'll take you home." Bailey said to me and I looked at her with a nod.
"I will meet you by the car." I said to her with a smile. I then started to stumble over there. I was glad it was Bailey taking me home. Let's say the apartment was a mess when I got home. But boys will be boys.
