143. This Is How We Do It
This morning Caleb wasn't home. He was having a sleepover with one of friends. I was doing the laundry. "Could you wash this for me?" Jackson asked as he took his shirt off.
"Yes." I said to him with a smile. He then came over and kissed me. I then took my shirt off. There was nothing like a little rendezvous in the morning. Once it got to work I'd helped myself to coffee before I saw a group waiting outside the men's toilets and I thought I'd join them.
"What's that about?" Bailey asked as she walked past us. Clearly confused.
"Uh...Chief's in the bathroom." I heard Teddy said before she went out of ear shot. "Door's opening!" She shouted and we all started to talk at once to him.
"Wait, quiet! I haven't made my decision yet! Get out of my way!" Webber said before he posed through us all. I saw Bailey saunter over to us.
"Stalking a man while he's in the restroom?" Bailey asked and I looked at the group we had going.
"I'd clean the restroom if he'd let me on this trial." Jackson said to us, he wouldn't do anything like that.
"I'd live in it." Cristina said trying to one up him.
"You are surgeons. If you want to impress the chief, impress him surgically. Avery, you're with me." She said while pushing past us. I'd never seen her like that before.
"Ok..." He said before following her. I then went to go and find Callie. It was going to be her baby shower and I was distracting her.
"We're going all out. There's going to be onesie decorating. You better have the best design." She said to me as we were walking and I looked at her.
"I'll try to but no promises." I said to her and then I realized we were heading exactly to where the baby shower was getting set up.
"Bite me, Mark!" Arizona shouted as we walked in.
"Oh, what's going on? Are you guys fighting again?" Callie asked us, I didn't surprise me that they were always fighting.
"Did you want a scrapbook station?" Arizona asked, of course she did.
"Oh, yeah, of course. It's not a real shower if you don't get to take home a scrapbook. Ooh! We should have glitter pens!" She said to us all and I smiled at her.
"You heard what the lady said. Get glitter pens." I said to them all. Once it got around to the baby shower there were cookies, onesies and of course a scrapbook. I heard Callie cheering. I gave her her big present and gave a smile. I then went over to do a onesie. I was doing a cute little skeleton design and then I went to do a scarp book page. Jackson came over to me.
"How about we go to the on call room?" He asked me with a smile and I turned to face him.
"Yes, I will take a look at that patient." I said to him as we both left the room. I saw Callie give me a look. Listen, I did everything I ate, I played games. I did the whole thing and I needed a little bit of fun in a room with my boyfriend. Honestly it felt like Jackson and I had been together for ages. I was kind of just waiting for a proposal at this point but I'd be patient. I had to be. Once we got to the on call we started doing our little shenanigans.
"This whole thing with Callie and the baby..." I started at he looked at me.
"It's probably a lot for you I know that you and Mark were a thing once." He said to me and I looked at him.
"That was a long long time ago, it wasn't really a long relationship only a few months. But Callie having a baby..." I started again and he cut me off and I looked at him.
"What about it?" He asked me, I didn't know how to say it.
"It makes me realize how much I missed everything with Caleb. I wasn't ready and my marriage had ended. But now I want one. Not that I'm saying I want one now with everything going on but eventually. When you're ready, and if that person is me. Then maybe we should think about it. Talk it about it." I said to him and he came over to me and wrapped his arms around me.
"From the second I met you, I knew that I was done with every one. I'd met the right person, the person that I'd want to live with and with who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Then potentially have kids with at some point, but when this whole thing is over and boards is over with next year. Then we should bring this discussion back. We'll be at a good point." He said to me and kissed me making me smile, not a proposal but a promise. In a way nothing set in stone. Once we got back to my place. We were having a little make out session in my room. I wanted no interruptions today. When I woke up in the morning I had a text from Callie saying she'd left for her trip. Once it got to work that was when I heard the worst news you could ever here.
News that was so bad that it made you want to believe that everything was false. News that would make the world stop turning because if it was true you'd never be strong enough to handle it. That kind of news. News that was too unreal to even think or process in the short amount of time. News that made you realize that life really is too short and that it's not fair. Lastly, news that will prove to you time and time again that might everything works out how it's supposed to.
