132. These Arms Of Mine

When I got to the hospital tonight everything seemed different. There was a filming crew there. It was how far we'd come 6 months after the shooting. Mer, Cristina and I weee getting ready to help with the incoming trauma. "We're on trauma rotation. So it's our job to take point and assess each medical emergency as it comes in." Mer said to the cameraman.

"This will then ensure that everyone knows what they're doing and if they can help or not." I said before entering the room.

"Let's get X-ray in here!" Someone shouted.

"Retractor." I heard, Callie wasn't here yet.

"Talk to me, Grey." Owen said to her.

"Peripheral IV's blown, pressures plummeting." Mer said to him, this wasn't looking to good.

"Someone page Dr. Shepherd!" Someone shouted after we were trying to sort him out.

"V-tach!" Someone yelled.

"No pulse. Push on of epi." Owen said to us.

"Starting compressions! Give me those paddles!" Mer yelled, I was just hoping this guy had a chance.

"...are wide open." I caught someone saying halfway through.

"Let's see what we have." Someone said and we all stopped.

"There's a rhythm." I said to them all, we had him back.

"Yeah but, half his brain is on the floor, so..." I heard someone say, he was brain dead.

"That's it. He's basically brain dead." Owen said to us, I saw Derek walk in.

"Dr. Hunt, is he a donor?" Derek asked before they went talking. When it reached the morning I was walking with the crew. They were asking questions. We went to the briefing room.

"I was one of the ones shot in the shooting. But I wasn't alone I had a fellow colleague with me the whole time in case anything happened. My siblings were there as well but I had my siblings as well but I didn't want them to see me like that." I said to them before nodding.

"And who was that colleague?" One of them asked me, I looked at them and spotted her outside.

"It was the one and only Dr. Miranda Bailey." I said to them, I hated remembering that day. They asked me another question.

"What do I remember most? I remember thinking I was going to die and I also remembering seeing my friend die next to me." I said to them before looking down, I answered a few more before going to see a Callie. We were doing two arm transplants today.

"See that? That could be a problem." Mark said to us, it looked like it could be.

"What if we try a bypass instead?" Derek asked making Callie and I hummed in response. We then started discussing our plan.

"No, no. You're thinking like a nerve guy." Mark said to Derek but that's what he was though.

"I am a nerve guy." Derek said to him in response.

"It goes blood supply, then nerves." Mark said to us, what about the bones.

"Actually, it's tendons, then blood supply, then nerves." Owen said to us, Callie and I looked at each other.

"Um, hello? What about the bones?" Callie asked them.

"Like isn't that important as well?" I asked them all.

"That's certainly something to take into consideration..." Owen said to us, this was going to be interesting.

"You know there's only been one successful bilateral arm transplant in the country. In the world." Mark told the camera crew, we were going to join that list.

"In the world." Owen said to us.

"I wouldn't go so far as calling us medical titans, but..." Derek said with a smile, Callie and I were just listening to everything.

"We are." Owen said to us.

"Not the first time I've been called a titan." Mark said making Callie and I roll our eyes. How long until they were done talking about being titans. After we were done I went to get a coffee and I heard the emergency alarm go off. We had a new security system and it was the worst. Whenever the alarm went off I just wanted to hide and it always scared me which meant my coffee was spilled on the ground. I saw the camera crew.

"Since the thing I'm always on guard whenever something happens I get scared. But you would be as well right, I mean in case you get into a life or death situation again." I said to him with a smile, I cleaned up my coffee and then got a new one. After my coffee I went and had a quick nap seeming as I hadn't slept at all. I then went to go and be with Callie and the donor. Lexie then joined us.

"Um, Dr. Torres? Dr. Y/l/n?" I heard Lexie ask, Callie and I hummed in response. "Uh, you've probably seen this, but have you seen this?" She asked us and we both took a look.

"Oh, crap." I said to them.

"Oh, my God, no. Oh, no, no, no, no. Ok, um, page Sloan. Right now." Callie said to Lexie before she went to page Mark. Our donor had a tattoo. Callie and Mark had to go and tell the news. I went with the crew again.

"You asked me if I had anything to lose during the last moments of what could have been my life and I did. I, um, I have a son he's 9. Caleb. His dad passed and he came to live with me after that. I didn't want him to lose him Mum as well." I said to them while drinking a coffee.

"Why did you decide to chose to stay at Seattle Grace Mercy West?" One of the crew members asked me, I gave it a thought.

"Because this is the place that I learnt to be the person I was and it has the best orthopedics program." I said to them, as we continued walking I saw Mary.

"Dr. Y/l/n, how are you?" She asked me as I walked past her room. I smiled at her.

"I'm better, how are you doing?" I asked her while standing in the doorway.

"I'm doing well, I've got my surgery today." She said to me with a smile.

"You've been waiting long enough, I'm happy for you." I said to her, I stayed and talked with her before scrubbing in. "Mary, was one of the people who was with me when I got shot. She saw things that she'll never forget. Today was the first time I've seen her since then." I said to the camera crew. After I got prepped for surgery I went into the OR.

"Hope you've got that bone saw ready, 'cause I am really in the mood to cut off some arms." Callie said as she entered the OR. She then told me about what was going on with Arizona.

"So, in a few minutes, we'll be ready to completely detach the arms from the donor." Owen said to us all, this was going to be amazing.

"Why use zigzag incisions?" Callie asked April, I hated how she was here. Callie gave me a look so that I wouldn't answer it.

"To get the maximum exposure." April answered, I could've said that.

"Good. See what I'm doing here? I'm tagging each vessel, artery and vein so we know exactly how to hook them up to the recipient. It's kinda of like the back of your TV. You need to know which connection goes where or you wind up with sound and no picture, or picture and no sound." Callie said before we all started working to get the arms off.  "The minute we remove the arms from the donor, the tissues starts to die. So we have to work fast, really fast. We have a very limited window to complete this part of the surgery." Callie said before we put the arms on the tray.

"Arms are off and on the move." Owen said before we went to the other OR.

"Ok. Ok, let's get started." Derek said once we entered. We then started on the surgery.

"So we're about nine hours in. Dr. Torres and Dr. Y/l/n have finished attaching the donor arm bones to the recipient with titanium plates and screws, and now they are beginning to attach the tendons." April told the cameraman.

"I need a tendon graft for this one." Mark said to us.

"I'm on it." Owen said to him in response.

"Watch out for the neurovascular bundles." Derek said to us.

"I need more irrigation here, please." Callie said to us before I saw the arm move.

"The arms moving." Derek said to us making me smile.

"Where have you been?" I heard April ask someone.

"We've reconnected the arteries and veins. But we need to check the circulation before we continue." Mark said to us.

"What were gonna do now is release the tourniquets, one arm at a time, and then look to see if the blood flows into the vessels." Derek said to us, this was the scary part.

"Ok. Moment if truth." Callie said to us.

"I'm so nervous." I said to her.

"Releasing the tourniquet." Mark said to us, we all went silent.

"Arms pinking up!" Callie said to us. I was so happy that it worked.

"Good." Derek said as we all applauded.

"Moving onto the second one." Mark said to us. This was going to be a long process still. "So, what's the big deal? You'll visit her, she'll visit you. It's just a plane ride." Mark said to Callie, but there was an issue because of their jobs.

"Can we not talk about this right now?" Callie asked him making Mark shut up.

"Arms getting cyanotic." Owen said to us.

"The vessel attachments are all good." Mark said to us, Callie and I shared a look.

"What, did he throw a clot? If we can't restore the blood flow, we're going to lose the arm." Derek said to us, this was the worst thing could ever happen.

"Picture. We got picture and no sound." Callie said to us.

"We need to restore the sound." I said to them all.

"Excuse me?" Owen asked us.

"Move over. Just move over." Callie said to Mark as she started getting it back. Lexie went to give an update.

"Torres, do you need help?" Derek asked her, I could help her if she needed.

"I could retract that for you. You want me to patch that?" Mark asked her, she needed him to shut up.

"Gimme a second. I know what I'm doing." Callie said to him.

"Are you sure you don't want me..." Mark started before I glared at him.

"Give me a second! I know what I'm doing. I just need a second. Everybody shut up." Callie said before it went silent and she went to work. "Ok. All right. There. Picture and sound. I think." Callie said to us, let's hope we'd pulled this around the arm then started pinking.

"Thank god." I said as everyone applauded.

"That's good. Nicely done." Derek said to us all.

"Perfect." Mark said, I was happy this man would have arms. Functioning arms. When everything was over I spoke with the crew again.

"What have I learnt since being shot? Never take anything for granted. If there's anything you want to do in life, do it before it's too late. I know how easy it is to possible get your life taken away." I said to him while sitting down.

"How have people treated you since then?" They asked me.

"Well since then my boyfriend and I have been making sure to cherish each moment we have with each other. And we look out for each other. But my son calls me a superhero because someone tried to take me down but I came back stronger." I said to him, after 4 weeks our security system was gone. When I found out that Callie was leaving I broke down.

"How do you feel that Dr. Torres is leaving?" They asked me as I walking looking at my new house.

"I'm sad you know. She's my best friend and the most amazing mentor someone could ever have. I'm not prepared to lose her." I said to them. This house was something that I could only dream off, it was 3 bedrooms so that meant space for a nursery. When I went to the hospital I saw Miranda crying when I went over to her she told me that Mary was gone. Her and Charles were gone the only people who was in the group of 6 with us during the shooting. Who was next?
