129. Superfreak
It was late hours of the night and Jackson was working a bit later. When he returned home I was fast asleep. When it got to shift I was just waiting to know what I was doing with Callie today. But it was slow so I was checking on our old patients. "It take it you've got not exciting today?" Alex asked me as we were working down the hallway.
"You'd be correct, what about you?" I asked him, he looked at me.
"I couldn't get in the elevator." He said to me, I saw Bailey waving me over.
"Y/n, are you free?" She asked me from a distance, I looked at Alex and he motioned for me to go.
"Yeah, I've got nothing." I said to her, she nodded.
"Good, you're now on my service today." She said to me and I smiled. I then saw that Lexie and Jackson.
"I swear to god, Jerry, if you don't get out of the car, I'm going to break the glass and drag you through the freaking window!" A woman shouted as we saw a car parking in the ambulance bay.
"No!" Jerry shouted back at her.
"Um, look, ma'am, this is an ambulance bay. It's for doctor and patient vehicles only." Miranda said before pointing to where she needed to go.
"Well, if my idiot husband would ever get out of the car, you'd see he was a patient." The lady said to us, but he didn't want to for some reason. The car alarm chirped followed by a door lock. "Jerry, unlock the door." She said to her husband.
"Just take me home, Tess! This was a big mistake." Jerry said to us, I was just wondering what was so bad that he had to hide.
"Um, sir. If there is something wrong with you, you should let us take a look. We can help." Miranda said to Jerry trying to entice him out.
"Really? Can you help me with these?" He asked her, she looked in and then looked at Tess.
'Uh, yes. Y- -yes, we can. But we can't do anything until you get out of the car." She said to him, he looked at her.
"You'll have to open the door for me." He said to her, Tess unlocked the car again. Miranda looked at us.
"Ok. Um...I need a- -a chair. Oh, ok." She said before Jackson went to go and get a chair. I saw his hands and it was like nothing I'd ever seen before. Lexie then shouted.
"Oh, my...I'm sorry." She said to him, I couldn't believe she'd just done that.
"People are great, aren't they? Real sweethearts." Jerry said while getting into the chair. Once we got him to his hospital room Jackson and I did a routine workout on him whilst Miranda was lecturing Lexie. Before she went off to go and get someone. Probably Mark and when they returned we could finally figure out what this was.
"Um, Mr. Adams, some time in your history, you contracted H.P.V. There are various types of the virus. This one generally causes small warts. But in rare cases like yours, there's an immune deficiency that allows the warts to get out of control." Mark said to them, I was hoping we could do something.
"We went to a dermatologist in Pullman four years ago. They were a lot smaller then. He removed a bunch of them." Tess said to us, but then they returned.
"They grew back. Then we saw the guy again, and they grew back again. They're always gonna grow back. And that's why we should just go home." Jerry said to us, but what if there was something we could do about it.
"Well, if you don't do anything about it, they're gonna continue to grow. You'll become completely disabled. We need to do surgery." Mark said to him, finally my first surgery since being back.
"You can't just scrape the stuff off?" Tess asked us, that's how they'd continue to grow.
"No. Um, each one of the warts has its own blood supply. So we need to cut and stitch each one." Bailey said to him.
"So basically, I'm gonna go from looking like a tree to looking like Frankenstein, right? Super." Jerry said to us, I truly wished there was another way.
"Well, we'll be doing skin grafts at the same time, which will help with your appearance and function. That said, you're right, it's not a cure. The warts will recur, but, uh, if you schedule surgeries regularly, we might be able to keep them under control." Mark said to him with a smile.
"Do you see? It's what I told you. They can't help." Jerry said to his wife, but we could,
"So a couple of years with me is, what...a waste of time. We never go out, Jerry. We sit in that Damn house, day after day, month after month. I want us to see a movie, to go out to dinner, I want to see...people." Tess said to her, I could only imagine how hard that would be.
"Um, if the two of you want to discuss it, we can..." Bailey started before Tess cut her off.
"No. There's no more discussion. You're having the surgery, 'cause if you don't, I'm gonna leave you. And you got nobody else...no friends, even your brothers have given up. I'm it. I'm all that's left. So you're having the surgery." She said to him, that wasn't that a bad ultimatum. I wouldn't said the same. But it wasn't fair what she was doing at the same time. Lexie and I were staying with him and she was gagging the whole time. After a while I went to the desk and we were talking about when we lost our virginity.
"So, Karev, how old were you your first time?" Jackson asked Alex when I got there.
"Fifteen. School nurse, back of her car." Alex said to us.
"Fifteen? That's impressive." Jackson said while walking over to stand next to me.
"When I was 16, she taught me how to drive that same car." Alex said making Mer and I laugh.
"Sophomore in High School, Paul Waxman, had absolutely no idea what he was doing." Mer said making Cristina and I hum.
"Junior prom, Sarah Richardson and Penny Caraway, together. I knew exactly what I was doing." Jackson said to us, Cristina and I shared a look.
"I was also fifteen. Henry Michaelson, we left school earlier and went to his house. He may not have known what he was doing but I did and I was in charge." I said with a smile. Let's just say I still was in charge sometimes.
"Nineteen." Christina said to us.
"Nineteen?" Alex repeated with a questioning tone.
"Mm-Hmm. I was very focused on my studies. It was my Chem T.A. he was a whole head shorter than me, but...man, he was smart." Cristina said with a smile. We then looked at April.
"Hey, April." Jackson said to her, she seemed off.
'I'm not talking about this. It was a private...private memory." She said to him, she was still a virgin.
"What happened, did the guy die?" Alex asked her, there was no guy.
"Alex." Mer said to him.
"Oh, did it last, like, three seconds, so you don't know if it counted?" Cristina asked her.
"Or where you both drunk and just woke up next to him and don't know if it happened or not?" I asked her while leaning against the desk.
"No and no." April said making Cristina and I hum.
"Uh...it was on the beach at sunset. It was beautiful." April said before we all laughed.
"Sunset?" Jackson asked her.
"Yeah." She answered.
"As someone who's had sex on the beach, it's definitely not somewhere that someone would lose their virginity." I said to her, I felt eyes on me.
"Really? Weren't there people there?" Jackson asked, I nodded there's always people at the beach.
"Oh, on the beach? Man, you get sand up in places you don't want to get sand." Christina said to us.
"Trust me it's the worst feeling." I said to her.
"Mosquitoes." Alex said, luckily we didn't worry about that.
"Mm-hmm. Yeah." Cristina got out.
"Ha! You're a virgin." Alex said loudly making me smile.
"No, I'm not." She said to us, a classic virgin thing to say.
"Oh, my god. You are! Oh, my god. Do it. Do it." Cristina said while laughing. "Do it to her, right now. Alex, go deflower her. Do it. Do it." Cristina said, Mer and I were laughing to hard.
"It was...it was on the beach at sunset, ok?" April said, she was making her case worse.
"Ok, leave her alone. April, the beach at sunset is very nice." Mer said, after a while we all had to go and do other things. We were needed in the OR.
"Dr. Bailey, how can you tell which is horn and which is finger?" Jackson asked her, it had been a while since I'd been in an OR, that's mainly because the last time I was. I was on the table.
"If there's no bleeding, I'm still cutting off the horn. If there's a lot of bleeding, I'm probably cutting off a finger. Sometimes this job is very simple, Dr. Avery." Bailey said before going to hand it to Lexie.
"I can do that if you want." Jackson said to Lexie.
"She's fine. Right, Dr. Grey?" Miranda asked her, it went silent for a second.
"Right." She said while taking it away. We all looked at her. "What?" She asked Mark and I.
"Nothing." We both said before he continued on. But we kept looking at her.
"How are you feeling Dr. Y/n? It's been a while since you entered the OR." Miranda said to me I looked at her.
"I don't know how I feel but at least I'm not the one on the table." I said back to her, she looked at me.
"Fair point, I'm just glad that you're back working in the OR." She said to me, I could tell she was smiling under her mask. The monitor then started beeping.
"Oh." Mark got out.
"What?" She asked him.
"I thought I had some normal skin here, but it's already starting to grow warts." Mark said to us, was there any viable skin here.
"What does that mean?" Lexie asked, the worst possible outcome. That's what that meant.
"It means, Jerry's not going to get his skin grafts anytime soon. He's gonna have a lot of open wounds." Miranda said to us, poor guy.
"So he was right. He is gonna look like Frankenstein." Jackson said making us all look at him.
"Maybe I should go update the wife. You know, prepare her for the worst? I mean, if- -if I were her, I would- -I would want to know sooner than later." Lexie said to Miranda, she really didn't want to be here.
"You're not going anywhere." Bailey said to her.
"Which is fine, because I'm fine- -I'm fine right here. I'm- -I'm just saying, if- -if, you know, if I were the wife, I'd want to know sooner than later." She said before Miranda looked at her. "Later it is, then." She said to her. She really wasn't fine here.
"12 pounds. eBay, here I come." Jackson said making me shake my head and Lexie laugh.
"Dr. Grey." Miranda said to her.
"I'm sorry." Lexie said while laughing making me laugh.
"You are doctors." Bailey said before Jackson stared laughing. "If you're going to be doctors, caregivers, you need to be able to handle anything the human body throws at you." Miranda said to us before gasping. That's when I saw the spider and went to the corner of the OR far away. "Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh, God! Look right there. A spider. It's a spider. Oh! J...no, no. Come on. Somebody do something, please. It's a spider." Miranda said while backing away.
"Mark, kill it." I said seeming as he was looking at it.
"That?" Lexie asked her.
"Yes! It just crawled right out of that horn. Quick, kill it! Kill it!" Miranda said before Lexie put it on the floor before steppingon it and killed it.
"I- -it..." Lexie said before killing it even more.
"Thank you. Thank you. Oh, thank you. Oh, thank you. Oh, thank you. Ok. Ok. Whew. Y/n, it's safe over here now." Miranda said I went back over there.
"If it happens again, I'm out of this OR." I said to her.
"I'll be closely behind you." Miranda said making me smile. Once we finished the surgery we had to take him back up to his room. After that, I was told to go and check in on someone else. That meant going back to that corridor. I saw Bailey appear beside me. "Now, I know how hard this must be to walk past this place. But I'll be with you every step." She said to me.
"I don't know if I can do it." I said to her, she looked at me.
"I don't know if I can either, that's where Percy died in my arms and you were slowly joining him." She said to me, this time hadn't been easy at all. We managed to get halfway before I had to stop. I saw the spot.
"I don't think I can go any further." I said to her, she nodded.
"That's fine, how about we just sit here for a bit before we go any further. I'll page for someone else to go and sort the patient out." She said and I nodded at her. We both then sat down for what felt like ages. We then saw Webber.
"Is everything okay?" He asked the two of us.
"We're trying to get past this desk. But we can't." Miranda said to him, as we both stood up.
"I was just with Karev helping him get over the elevator. I'll take over with this Bailey." He said and Bailey nodded before leaving.
"I just can't go any further. You know that was the spot I lost consciousness and thought I was never waking up again." I said to me, he looked where I was looking.
"I know you avoid walking past here and even going into patient room 320 but we're going to walk past here and go in and out of that patient room until your bored it won't be able to erase the trauma but it will help." He said, and we did just that for about half an hour until I felt confident to walk past there and in and out of the room myself. Afterwards I got changed and went to Joe's.
"Come on. Just admit it. You're still a virgin." Alex said to April. She definitely was.
"No, I'm not." She said to us.
"Hey, there's no shame in it." Jackson said to her, no one was judging.
"Really?" She asked us.
"No one will judge you." I said to her with a smile.
"No, there's shame." Jackson said to her.
"A lot of shame. Tell her, Mer and Y/n." Alex said to us, I mean there was a little bit of shame but it all came down to beliefs and if it's her own decision or not.
"I, um..." Mer started. "I was gonna say something, and then I forgot to stop drinking. Has anybody seen Cristina?" Mer asked before Lexie joined us.
"Ok. So today only one person looked at me like a psycho who might run down the hall naked, and Dr. Bailey screamed like a little bitch baby over a spider, so I'm feeling pretty good, you know, for a crazy person." Lexie said to us, we were all crazy somehow.
"Well, nobody gives a crap if you're crazy. We're all crazy." Jackson said to us.
"Yeah, look at April. She's still a virgin." Alex said before him and Jackson laughed.
"Yeah, well, Mark gives a crap, ok? He stares at me like I'm a menace to myself and everyone around me. Wait. You're still a virgin." Lexie said before laughing.
"Stop. Ok? Just stop. I'm a virgin. Yes. So what? It's not something I talk about, ok? We all have things we don't talk about. Alex, you e been afraid of the elevator for, like a month, but I never said anything because it's none of my business. Just like you Y/n, with being afraid of the nurses desk and room 320. And, Jackson, you wake up every night screaming because you have nightmares. And, Meredith, you don't talk about Cristina because you're afraid she's never gonna be the same Cristina again. And, Lexie...for God sake, Mark never thought you were a psycho. He loves you. That's why he stares at you, because he can't keep his eyes off the woman he loves. Of course, he's never gonna say anything 'cause he doesn't feel like he can. Look, we all have stuff we don't talk about. I am a 28-year-old virgin, mainly because I w ages my first time to be special, and then I waited too long, and partially because I'm pretty sure guys find me annoying. I'm a virgin. That doesn't make it drinks conversation. We all have stuff we don't talk about." April said before it went silent for a bit, she was starting to get interesting.
"Oh, April. I'm liking you more and more." Mer said to her with a smile.
"You're starting to get interesting." I said with a smile.
"Thank you." She said to us, after a while we all departed back home. It was just me and Caleb tonight. I just felt glad that I could finally work through something even if it would still affect me.
