128. Shock To The System

It was a stormy morning in Seattle. It was also the day after the wedding. Of course we had early shifts today. Jackson made me breakfast and we then headed off to work. "Sounds big. I'm betting M.V.C." Jackson said at the locker room as we were getting changed.

"Multiple M.V.C. or an apartment fire." Alex said before walking away.

"When is the staring gonna stop?" April asked, I won't.

"As soon as the novelty wears off. Just ignore them." Jackson said to her.

"It's kinda hard for me to ignore them, especially since they have a nickname for me." I said to them both while putting on my doctors coat.

"Owen washed my hair. And he told me to eat this grainy nut bar. And he booked me into surgery this morning. He is in charge of me. I'm a bride, and I'm going with it." I heard Cristina say on my way out. I remember being a bride. That was a long time ago. I was just hoping I wouldn't become one soon. My pager then went off. I felt people staring.

"Yes, I'm the one who should've died. But please leave me alone." I said to them, Jackson looked at them.

"Go find something more interesting to talk about." Jackson said before my pager went off again. I then left and saw Callie on the way.  We had burn victims.

"Ok, multiple burn victims. Two with paralysis, three with vision loss, one, uh, blown eardrums, and one dislocated hip." Callie said reading the charts.

"House fire?" Lexie asked her.

"Explosion?" April asked.

"Car wreck?" Alex asked, all three were wrong.

"Uh, act of God." Callie said reading the answer.

"Act of God?" Bailey asked.

"Yeah, lightning strike." Callie said to them.

"Pretty unique." I said to her.

"All that from one lightning strike?" Alex asked. Yes, from one.

"One lightning strike, eight victims. Took out a whole flag football team." Callie said to them. Monitors were beeping erratically.

"God was in a mood today." Bailey said as incoming patient came past. I was doing consults on patients before Callie waved me into a trauma room.

"Ok, wiggle your toes for me." Callie said to the patient but she couldn't.

"I still can't. Am I gonna be in a wheelchair?" She asked, it was hard to tell now.

"We're gonna take you in for a CT, but hopefully, it is just temporary, from the lightning." Callie said to her, that would be the best outcome.

"Couple of your friends have it, too. They're already starting to get some feeling back. Try not to worry." Mark said to her before the door opened and Mer walked in.

"Hey, Kerry. A friend of yours, Russ Gammie, is asking about you." Mer said to Kerry.

"How's Warren Griffith? Is he OK? Did he ask about me?" Kerry asked her, was Warren her boyfriend?

"Which one is Warren?" Mer asked her.

"Excuse me. Excuse me. I..." A guy said pushing Mer out of the way.

"Who's this, Russ or Warren?" Mark asked her, I didn't even know.

"Mitch?" Kerry asked.

"Mitch now?" Mer asked them.

"How many more is there?" I asked Mer as we shared a look.

"Hey, have you seen Warren? Is he OK?" She asked Mitch.

"Kerry, I gotta say this. We both could've died out there. That lightning bolt was like one in a million shot, so I gotta take one, too. I love you, Kerry, and if we get through this, I want you to know, I will love you forever." Mitch said to her, Mark and I shared a look. What was going on in this trauma room.

"What? W..." She said before pointing to her ear.

"Sir, I'm sorry. If you're not being treated, then you're gonna have to go to the waiting room. We'll...we'll keep you posted." Lexie said while pushing him out the room.

"Kerry, can you hear me?" Mark asked her once Mitch left.

"Yeah, I can hear you fine. I just didn't want him to know that I heard that." Kerry said, she was a smart girl.

"You're a popular girl." Mer said to her, very popular.

"No. I'm sure he's just overexcited. Uh...it is like a one in a million thing." Kerry said to us, yeah confessing to someone really was.

"Actually, it's more like a 1 in 6,250 kind of thing. Lightning kills between 150 to 300 people every year in the U.S. alone." Lexie said, this was one of her things she would go through.

"Lexie." Mer said before smiling at her.

"Well, no, I mean, it's...it's still rare. I mean, it's not, like, say, handgun death. I mean, that's...that's 1 in 325." Lexie said continuing on.

"Lexie." Mark said to her. "You OK?" He asked once he got her attention.

"Yeah. No, I'm saying...I'm saying she's lucky. That's...You know, hey, yay, you." Lexie said to her, she needed calm down.

"Can someone just please check on Warren for me? I need to know if he's ok?" Kerry asked us.

"Is Warren your boyfriend?" Mer asked her, he had to be right.

"No. He's...no." Kerry said, so then who was Warren.

"Ok." Mer said before going to leave.

"Well, you've got two burst eardrums, but they will heal themselves, too." Mark said to her after looking in her ears.

"Great. Thank you." She said to him.

"Does that mean there's no surgery? Can I go? 'Cause Dr. Shepherd's here, so he might have something." Lexie said while motioning to the door.

"Maybe you should stick with me." Mark said to her. "Kerry will need a workup." He said before taking his gloves off. I needed a surgery. I was climbing the walls in my mind. But seeming as their was nothing for me to do but wait for the scans and when they did and we told Kerry I wish we didn't.

"Oh, my God. Thank you." Kerry said after we told her the good news.

"Yep, CT looks clear. No damage to your spine." Callie said to her with a smile.

"Which means I can go?" Lexie asked, I don't think she could.

"It means you should observe her." Lexie said before we heard arguing. Before we three guys entered the room. One being Mitch and the other two I guess were Russ and Warren.

"Whoa! Hey!" Mark shouted before they all started talking at once. She was a popular girl.

"Guys, you can't be in here." Mer said as her and Alex entered the room.

"Everybody, shut up. Shut up." Kerry said and they all stopped talking. "Ok, Warren. You talk." She said to him.

"Kerry, I..." He started before coughing up blood.

"Oh, my God." Alex and Kerry got out at the same time.

"Page Bailey!" Alex shouted, we all started talking over each other at once. That was the worse thing to happen. Especially when you're confessing. Callie and I left after that seeming as we had nothing left to do. After a while we all met her in the lobby. Mer was watching Wheel Of Fortune.

"You ready? You up for this?" Jackson asked Cristina as we both sat down.

"Up for what?" Mer asked her.

"Teddy's rebuilding a woman's atrium out of a sack of cow meat." Cristina said to her, now that sounded like fun.

"I'd kill to do something like that." I said to her, maybe it was too early to say that.

"But you're not nervous at all?" Jackson asked her, but she just shook her newspaper.

"You're lucky. I get to watch an intestinal perf repair. Bailey won't let me operate till I get this bullet out." Alex said to us, I wasn't allowed to operate because apparently I was someone who was bound to crack and go crazy.

"I'll take it out. I'll cut it out right now." Mer said to him.

"And I'll help." I said to him with a smile.

"You sound like a junkie. What the hell is a pimpernel?" Alex said before continuing to watch Wheel Of Fortune.

"Kerry wants to know how Warren's doing." Lexie said while joining us.

"Intestinal perf. Going to surgery." Alex said before walking away.

"I'm never gonna operate again. Everyone thinks I'm gonna carve my initials into a patient." Lexie said to us.

"I'm never going to operate again because they want me to go crazy first." I said to them, it was a stupid reason. Bailey had told me this morning.

"I'll never operate angina because one man thinks I'm crazy." Mer said to us, before something changed on the Tv.

"Hey, guys, look at this. Look at this..." Jackson said, the news was talking about the lightning strike.

"A bystander's cell phone captured the shocking end to a flag practice in Lawton Park this morning." The news reporter said before the footage played.

"Oh!" Cristina got out.

"Oh! Oh, my..." Mer got out.

"That must've hurt." I said while watching it.

"Ooh." Cristina got out.

"We've got that amazing footage, plus all your news traffic and weather, coming up after this." The reporter said as the footage played again.

"Oh, my God. She never saw it coming. No. No, no no, no." Lexie said before running off.

"Fifty says she back in the cuckoo's nest by lunch." Cristina said before we continued on watching. After a while Mer and I got bored and decided to walk around the hospital.

"Should I fake going crazy, just to see what happens?" I asked Mer as we were walking and drinking coffee.

"You can try but if it doesn't work for the therapist it's not working for you with Bailey."  Mer said, this whole thing was just becoming a nightmare.

"It's just horrible, I'm itching to get into an O.R. and I'm just not allowed to. Because I'm on what? Crazy watch?" I asked her, she laughed a little.

"By the end of this we're going to be the crazy duo." She said to me, we truly were.

"I think I went full crazy on Jackson last night. I had a breakdown." I said to her, I did kind of go crazy but I only had one person to say that it happened.

"Just do that again, in front of Bailey." She said to me, we then split off so she could watch Cristina's surgery and I went to go and check on things in the pit. Seeming as their was nothing left for me to do I got changed and got ready to leave. On my way out I saw Jackson.

"How has your day been?" Jackson asked me as we went down the hallway.

"It wasn't special, I'm still just waiting to go crazy." I said to him, people were driving me insane.

"Are you ok?" He asked me, the question I hated.

"I'm so sick of people asking me that question. What do they think exactly? Like I'm just generally not ok and by asking me I'll feel better or something. I was shot, I'm going to have a permanent memory of that. I'll never be okay." I said to him, I didn't realise that people we're watching.

"I won't ask again. I'm sorry." Jackson said to me, I felt bad.

"No I'm sorry." I said to him he hugged me as I started to cry.

"It's not your fault, I shouldn't have asked." He said to me. "Let's go home." He said before he went to get changed before he took me home. It was horrible. Every time I took off my shirt or looked in the mirror there was my reminder staring back at me. How I wish everything would be over and how I wish that scars didn't last forever.
