118. Perfect Little Accident
This that event that Derek made. I'd become a better surgeon in a way. When I left this morning I forgot to eat. It was cold rainy day, what could possibly go badly. I was invited to a girls night by Arizona, this was going to be fun. I was working with her as well today along with Teddy. Which was a surprise. I found out that Harper Avery was in the hospital. Arizona allowed me to go so I changed and went to be with Jackson. I was introduced to Harper and he told me I looked a lot like my mother. He then went on to talk about how I could become a great surgeon like them and that he was happy that Jackson was with me. After a while we both left the room and Mer was speaking with us.
"Ah, here we go. He's going them the speech." Jackson said before crossing his arms. There was a speech.
"What speech?" Mer asked him.
"About the wonders of medicine. About how, as surgeons, you know, we're meant to push boundaries, and do what no one has ever done." Jackson said to us, I kinda wanna hear that speech.
"Sounds motivating." Mer said to us, I nodded.
"I feel like I could do with listening to that speech." I said to Mer, she nodded.
"It's cheesy, is what it is. And you hear it enough times at your grandparents' dinner table, you can't help but wanna be a surgeon when you grow up." Jackson said to us, so he felt like he had no choice, just like me.
"You had a dinner table? I didn't know world-class surgeons had dinner tables. I feel gypped." Mer said to us. We both laughed.
"There not as common as you'd expect." I said to her.
"That's 'cause you haven't heard the speech yet." Jackson said before we looked into the room. Mer had to go.
"Now, why don't we go and get something to eat." I said to Jackson. He took my hand.
"And after that I have to go and operate on my grandfather." He said to me. We started walking away.
"Then we should get going." I said to him with a smile. We ate before he headed to surgery and I went to the gallery.
"I don't get it. Why does he get to scrub in on his own grandfather's awake surgery?" Lexie asked us, they had to be a reason.
"The same reason Harper Avery personally requested Meredith Grey to be his resident." Cristina said, I'm just glad that it wasn't me.
"Nepotism sucks." Alex said before leaning forwards to talk to Lexie. I didn't hear what he said to her.
"No. Actually...I am full." Lexie said to him. He then said something else to her. "I said no! Ok? I'm not hungry. At all. So just go eat alone." Lexie said making Alex fall back in his seat. Did he feel defeated or something.
"Excuse me. Sorry." Charles said before standing on Cristina and I's way.
"Hey! Down in front, Bigfoot." Cristina said to him.
"Either sit down or leave, it's your decision Bigfoot." I said to him, he really annoyed me.
"Oh...it's Bigfoot now. Well, you know what they say about guys with big feet." Charles said to us while sitting down.
"Shouldn't you be off learning how to be a surgeon after you let my daredevil die?" Cristina asked him, her patient died.
"My daredevil? He didn't die. After you left, I personally helped preserve his heart function. Now, he's an organ donor." Charles said making Cristina leave. I followed after her. We went to operate on the lung and we paged Lexie to help us.
"You paged?" She asked as she walked into the OR. "Oh, my God! Are you doing an ex vivo lung repair?" Lexie asked us, I nodded with a smile.
"My daredevil turned out to be a match." Cristina said to her with a smile.
"You stole his lungs?" Lexie asked us while pulling her mask down.
"I wouldn't have called it stealing." I said to her.
"The transplant team rejected them and were gonna send them to medical waste so I just redirected them to medical research. Now, does Lexipedia want to be bad-ass and help on this thing or not?" Cristina asked her, we were both hoping it was a yes.
"My God. Yeah!" She said to us with a smile.
"Ok, so...I ventilated the lungs with CO2 and nitrogen..." Cristina said as we were telling her about what we'd done so far. It wasn't long until Teddy stopped us.
"You went behind my back. You used my name." Teddy said to her, we kinda did but it was Cristina's idea. I thought we were allowed to do this.
"Yes, but we followed protocol, we didn't tell the patient." Cristina explained to her.
"You stole lungs, Cristina! You as well Y/n!" She said to us, I looked at the lungs.
"Which they were about to be thrown out. She was being green." Lexie said trying to cover for her.
"Exactly and its practice." I said to her as well.
"Oh, great! Then I don't have to worry about the thousands of dollars you spent, and the fact that no one in this hospital has ever tried this before. Oh, my God. This is about Harper Avery, isn't it? That's why you did this?" Teddy said realising what was actually happening.
"Why is that such a bad thing? The point is that we- -You can pull this surgery off." Cristina said to her with a smile.
"Oh, wow. Thank you. Who needs Harper Avery when they've got the Cristina Yang seal of approval?" Teddy asked, Lexie and I were beginning to feel a bit awkward.
"That's not what I was saying." Cristina said to to her.
"All this ambition of yours, this desperate need to win prizes, it means your priorities are off!" Teddy shouted at her, she had no right to say that.
"Hey." Lexie said getting my attention.
"It doesn't. Prizes push us to be better." Cristina said to us, she was true.
"They push us to be monsters!" Teddy shouted at her.
"Hey." Lexie and I said together.
"Is the status quo not trying? That's worse!" Cristina said to her.
"Hey!" Lexie and I said loudly.
"The lungs, look! They're...they're viable." Lexie said as we were watching them work. They went to talk to a patient whilst I went to go back and spectate Harper Avery's surgery. When the surgery was over I could tell that Jackson was going to want some space because every knew he was Harper's grandson. Mer paged to Harper's room after a while. He'd coded. I went there immediately.
"Your CT shows that there's been a complication. Dr. Webber will take you back into the OR and fix it right away." Derek said to him, at least it could be fixed.
"Fine...but you're not putting me out. Clearly, a mistake was made. I'm not letting that happen again." Harper said to them, it was a mistake that could be fixed.
"That's not gonna happen this time. You're in my hospital today. You will abide by my rules. That means you go under general. Your grandson will be sitting in the waiting room as family. If you refuse, then I'll personally declare you unfit to make decisions regarding your own care. That is how a chief things. Take note." Derek said before leaving the room, I had to agree with him. When they took him to surgery Jackson and I sat in the waiting room. There was a girl sat opposite us.
"I'm going to get us both a coffee." I said before getting up and getting the coffee. When I came back the girl was gone, I handed Jackson the cup of coffee.
"Thank you, I need some." He said to me with a smile, Mer then walked over to us.
"Hey. So he's fine. It was an allergy caused by the suture." Mer said to us, so Webber didn't make a mistake.
"It was his fault then. Wow. That's awesome. Why don't they publish that story?" Jackson asked us, I knew that him and his grandfather didn't have the best relationship.
"Yeah, I know. I get it. The famous grandfather, the legacy he's trying to force on you. You didn't ask for any of it. Trust me, I get it. You're putting up walls and you're avoiding him and you don't want to introduce him to your friends. It was the same with my mother. But if she were here right now, in a room upstairs, I'd want to go see her and make things right with her. And I definitely would want to go learn from her. And you still can." Mer said to her.
"She's right, if that was my babushka I'd be in that room. Even though I'm not her favourite, I'd be there trying to work things out." I said to Jackson, he looked at Mer and I. He agreed to go up there and I went to check on Callie and I's patient. It wasn't long until Callie collected me so I could get ready for girls night. We were playing baseball for girls night.
"Why couldn't we have gone dancing for girls night?" Arizona asked us, I was glad we were playing baseball. We got to hit things. "Or bowling?" Arizona asked, that would been fun.
"We took a vote. You lost. Besides, it's fun." Callie said to her.
"And we get to hit things." I said to her with a smile.
"Says who?" Arizona asked us.
"Bailey's face. Look at it." Callie said, she looked happy.
"Go! Go! Go! Come on, come on!" Bailey said before hitting the ball.
"That's right!" Teddy said while clapping.
"Those were trick balls." Bailey said to us, there was the excuses.
"Bailey, you just gotta be taller!" Cristina said to us, I don't think height mattered.
"I got it." Bailey said with a smile.
"Let 'em go." Someone said, it wasn't long before she hit the ball.
"Way to go Bailey!" I said before drinking some beer.
"That's what I'm talking about! Teddy shouted while clapping.
"Yes!" Cristina shouted with a smile.
"Beat that, Yang!" Bailey said before going to hand the bat off to her.
"Oh, no, it's Teddy's turn." Cristina said before handing the bat to Teddy. "Gonna feel great when you connect. It's like making your first incision. Take it. Just you, the bat, and the ball." Cristina said while putting the helmet on her.
"Yeah, I'm a badass chick, Cristina. I've swung a bat before." Teddy said before Cristina walked off to the side.
"Ok, let's see it." Cristina said to her with a smile. She then hit the ball and it went far. We all cheered for her. Tonight was a good girls night. I hope we could have another.
