112. Holidaze
It was Thanksgiving Eve, I was on-call tonight. I wasn't the only one at the hospital. Mer was, I didn't know if she was staying or not. All I know is she was talking with the Chief. It was quiet tonight, I liked it. When it got to morning it was Thanksgiving. I was on Callie's service but she also allowed me to go where I needed.
"Bailey didn't tell her parents about her divorce." She said to me I looked at her,
"Are you serious? They've been divorced for ages." I said to her, we were heading to the pit.
"I know and then she asked me about how long it took me to come out to my parents." She said to me, when we got to the pit Mark was helping a burn victim and we were someone with an injured wrist.
"Dr. Sloan?" A young girl said getting his attention.
"Yeah." Mark said before looking at her. Alex walked over to Callie and I.
"Hi. Um, so this is a little weird, but, um...My name is Sloan Reilly. And, uh, my mom's Samantha Reilly. And, um...I'm pretty sure you're my dad." Sloan said to him, I saw Alex's eyes widen. Callie and I shared a look. Mark looked back at us then back at Sloan. He looked confused. After we were down Callie got supplies to do a paternity test on them. Before she started she called me. We were both shocked at the fact that Mark had a kid. She wasn't getting anywhere because he was being quiet.
"Mark...now might be a good place for you to say something." Callie said to him.
"Just say how you're feeling," I said to him, he just looked at us.
"Out loud." Callie said to him with a smile.
"Dude, are you, like, high or something?" Sloan asked him, before he answered Derek walked in the room.
"Sloan." He said upon entering.
"Yeah." He answered.
"Yes." Sloan answered. Derek chuckled.
"Mark, I need you on something." Derek said before pulling him out. I had to leave to go and see Alex, Cristina and Mer. Cristina and I were practicing sutures.
"This is the best thanksgiving ever. No obnoxious relatives. No stupid traditions. No going around the table and saying what you're grateful for." Cristina said to us, I was going to miss Iz's Thanksgiving turkey.
"Yeah, I think we should do the opposite. Talk about what we're not grateful for." Alex said to us, I knew my answer.
"The merger." Cristina and I said to each other.
"The Mercy Westers." Mer said to us.
'They're like the plague. I mean, stealing all our surgeries, eating all that pie in the nurses' station." Alex said to us, I didn't even get a slice. It was more of a slither.
"You're doing that wrong." Mer said to Alex, he really was.
"I am not." He said to her.
"You are. Can I show you?" Mer asked before showing him.
"Private lessons with the Chief...Man, those daddy issues are working for you." Cristina said to her, they really were.
"I don't have daddy issues. He's teaching me." Mer said to us, she did.
"You're his bitch." Alex said to her making me smile a little.
"Well, in that case, you're Teddy's bitch and you're Callie's bitch." Mer said while pointing at the two of us.
"Maybe that's my problem. I'm nobody's bitch." Alex said to us, well he was at one point.
"You were Addison's bitch at one point." I said to him with a smile.
"Oh, well, you were Izzie's bitch." Cristina said to him, he's been a bitch for two people.
"You're the bitch." Alex said to Cristina.
"You know what? It's Thanksgiving." Mer said to us, we should at least get on.
'Well..." Cristina started.
"Can we just have no name-calling?" Mer asked the two of them.
"At least for today." I said adding to what she said.
"Yeah. Please." Cristina said before heading back to sutures.
"Whatever. Just show me that stitch again." Alex said to her, Mer then showed him the stitch again. When I finished shift I went home to cook a Thanksgiving dinner for two. What a day.
Christmas Eve
It was hard to believe that tomorrow would be Christmas and I would be working instead of spending time with family. But at the end of the day I was going to be with other family. I was working with Callie. It started snowing and she allowed me to go outside.
"Enjoying the snow?" Jackson asked me with a smile. I turned round to look at him.
"I am." I said to him, he was with a patient. He went inside and got me a coat.
"So you don't get cold." He said before handing it to me. I went back inside and continued working. When it got to Christmas Day, Mer invited me to Christmas dinner at her place and I said I would go. When it go to the dinner I wore a dress. It wasn't that cold. Owen was playing his guitar, Arizona, Webber and I were singing.
"I really can't stay" Arizona and I sang.
"But, baby, it's cold outside" Webber sang back.
"I've got to go 'way" We both sang.
"But, baby, it's cold outside" Webber sang whilst reading the lyrics.
"This evening has been been so very nice" we sang Webber joined in.
"Hopin' you would drop in I'll hold your hands they're like ice" Webber sang, I liked this little singing session.
"My mother will start to worry" Arizona and I sang together.
"Hey, beautiful, what's your hurry?" Webber sang back.
"My father will be pacing the floor" We sang with a smile.
"Listen to the fire roar" Webber sang before having a drink.
"So really, I'd better scurry" We sang back.
"Well, maybe just a half a drink more." The three of us sang, we continued singing together. This was going to be a memorable Christmas. Caleb was with my parents.
"Oh, yeah." Webber said after we finished the song. Arizona and I started laughing before drinking our eggnog. When it got round to eating it was so good.
"The house looks beautiful, Mer." Lexie said to Mer.
"It's more decorated then my apartment. It looks beautiful in here." I said before drinking some wine.
"Thank you." Mer said to us.
"Callie?" Derek asked Arizona.
"Working." Arizona replied, if only she was here.
"Oh, that's too bad." Derek said to us, it would've been great if she was here, there would've been 4 of us singing.
"Here, you want some stuffing?" Cristina asked, Owen.
"Thanks. That's all, thank you." Owen said to them.
"I'll take some as well please." I said before getting some. "That's enough thank you." I said to her. I started speaking with Arizona.
"Oh, how- -how'd Kelsey do?" Teddy asked her. Kelsey must've been that patient.
"Uh, well." Cristina said back to her.
"Who's Kelsey?" Derek asked them.
"A girl with no heart. I had to do a laparoscopic bowel repair while the poor thing was awake on the table." Bailey said to us, I wonder how long she'd had no heart for.
"Miranda, mind your manners. Even if surgery is your whole life, it doesn't mean you have to talk about bowels at the dinner table." Bailey's father said to her, I shared a look with Arizona. Poor Bailey. She didn't deserve this.
"My child is healthy." Bailey said to him.
"Excuse me?" Her dad asked her,
"He may not be with me tonight, but he's healthy." Bailey started saying to him.
"I didn't say he..." Her dad started, the table atmosphere felt awkward.
"He's well-loved. He's a well-loved boy. And he's a happy boy. And staying in an unhappy marriage..." Bailey started, I see she was talking her dad into some sense.
"Now is not the time or the place..." Bailey's started before shutting up.
"Staying in an unhappy marriage, a marriage that I've outgrown, a marriage full of ultimatums and numbness and resentment..." Bailey continued, I was glad she got out of her marriage.
"Miranda..." Her father said trying to stop her again.
"That is not the kind of life I want to model for my child. That is not what I want him to believe married love is. Look, I know what's possible. I know what's out there for me because you taught me well. You and mom showed me what true love looks like. So I chose not to settle, and I'm happier for it, even if I'm alone at Christmas. My child is healthy, and I'm happy." Bailey said her voice breaking. The table was silent as we all continued to eat. "And, you know, part of my happiness is the fact that I got to repair a woman's bowel and save her life today. And that's God's work, which makes this appropriate Christmas dinner conversation." Bailey said to him with a smile. I nodded.
"Yeah." Lexie said with a smile. Bailey then started to cry.
"I'm happy. Ans my child is healthy. And that's enough for me today, Dad. That's enough." Bailey said to him, I felt so bad for her. I wanted to hug her.
"Uh, green beans, anyone?" Arizona asked around.
"Thank you." Webber said before we all started passing food and talking again. When it was New Years Eve I was in the hospital working like usual.
"Are you coming over tonight?" I asked Jackson when I saw him. He looked at me.
"Do you want me to?" He asked me and I nodded. "I'll be over later then." He said to me before kissing me.
"I'll look forward to it." I said to him before heading up to the gallery to watch Derek's surgery take place. I'd never seen anything like this. When they removed it, I clapped. It was amazing. I looked at the clock one minute to go, till New Years. I saw Jackson and grabbed him.
"What's this about?" He asked me with a smile, I pulled him into an on-call room and locked the door. 5, 4, 3, 2...1 I kissed him.
"Happy new year." I said to him with a smile.
"Happy new year." He said before he kissed me again more passionately. We celebrated in the on-call room before I started getting paged. "Don't go." He said holding onto me tightly.
"I have to." I said to him before kissing him again. I put my clothes on before leaving and answering my page. As the day continued I felt happy. It was a new year, new things were going to happen. When my shift came to end I headed home. After a few hours Jackson came over and we celebrated even more. What a way to start the new year.
