107. Invasion

It was that dreaded day. The merger day, yes I get it I was with Jackson who now worked here but still I hated this was happening. When I arrived I saw the new signing and I hated it. Especially since we were Seattle Grace Mercy West now. Me and Alex were talking and got to the doors were just about to shut. When Jackson held the door open for Charles. They were talking, me and Jackson were in agreement that we would make out that we didn't know each other. When we reached the Residents room we started to get ready and the new people dressed as prisoners started to pick their cubbies. Me and Iz were hoping to save George's one and leave it empty. But that didn't work.

"Oh, hey. You can't put that in there." Iz said to the girl next to Kepner. I'd never seen her before. Not that I should have.

"Oh, they told us to grab a cubby." She said to us.

"We know. Buts it's just empty for a reason. Please can you just put your stuff somewhere else? There's still some free cubbies that you can take." I said to her, I was hoping that she would.

"I don't think so." She said to me, Iz and I looked at each other.

"We said take it out." Iz said to her, I got a hint that she wouldn't.

"Great. I got the crazy ones next to me." She said to April.

"If you want a fight, we will. And just know that I will not stop punching no matter what and so we she." I said as Iz and I went in her face.

"Izzie. Y/n." Alex said to trying to stop us.

"We will fight you. You're pretty tiny. We could take you down in just a couple of seconds." Izzie said before Alex started pulling her back. I couldn't be here anymore so I walked out and went to Mer's room and immediately sat down in the chair next to her bed.

"Is everything okay?" She asked me.

"Now, this person but they're stuff in George's cubby and when me and Iz were about to fight her. Alex stepped in." I said to her with an angry tone.

"Did you tell her the reason?" Mer asked me.

"Yes and she ignored it. Mer I want to work somewhere else. I can't deal with them any longer and they've only been here for like 10 minutes." I said to her, I stayed with her a bit more before I left and watched the new people with the others.

"They took George's cubby." Iz said to them all. We then went to Mer's room.

"They're locusts, comfortable locusts, feeding on our surgeries." Mer said as Cristina was taking her blood pressure.

"It's rude. There should be at least a couple of days where they act like guests before they put their feet up on the coffee table." Iz said to us, I agreed with completely. They should've been respectful as well.

"And what's with the orange scrubs? What, ours aren't good enough for 'em?" Lexie asked while peeping through the blinds.

"We ran out. They're on back order. Randall from the supply company says there'll be here in a week. That's what you learn when you lie here all day." Mer said to us, what I would do to be in a hospital bed.

"Why bother ordering new ones? We could just gives these to our replacements." That one guy who was Cristina's intern said. I didn't remember their names.

"We're not gonna be replaced by anybody." Alex said to him.

"I have to become a coroner- -" The wimpy ones started.

"No one is becoming a coroner. Cristina, Y/n, tell him." Mer said to us.

"We could possibly lose our jobs to these leeches so we might be coroners." I said to him. Mer rolled her eyes.

"Tell him what? They're here. It's over." Cristina said to her.

"Hey. We are not some stupid hosts. They can't invade us. They can't attach themselves to our faces and then while we're eating spaghetti, explode out of our chests and skitter across the floor. This is our ship. This is our ship." Mer said to us, did she just quote Alien.

"Excuse me. Are you-are you quoting a Sigourney Weaver movie?" Lexie asked her sister.

"Shut up." Mer said making me smile.

"That's what happens when you live here. You watch a lot of TV." Iz said with a smile, it probably did.

"We own this hospital. We were born in this hospital. And we will hold this hospital with our last grasping breath." Mer said to us, I mean yes we were born in this hospital as interns but not as babies.

"I really don't want to be a coroner. I don't like dead people." The wimpy one said again, no one was going to be a coroner.

"Go out there and go get surgeries before they take them. Go! And I want a full report by the end of the day." Mer said as we started filing out, all but Cristina, she then caught up to us.

"Ok, where do you want us?" Cristina asked while we got to the E.R.

"Uh, at this point, anywhere is good." Owen said to us, that sounded good to me.

"At Mercy West, we do zones. When it's super busy, we just give everyone a zone, a space. The nurses put a person in that space, you know it's your patient. He,ps you get to 'em quicker." Jackson said to us, I could tell if working with him would be a blessing or a curse.

"Yeah, well, this is in the ER, not a school yard. We're not playing four square." Cristina said to him that was true.

"I like it." Owen said to us, I saw Callie.

"Y/l/n, your with me today." She said to me, looks like I was going to be caught with this zone business. I walked over to her. After a while, Bailey came over to us.

"Did the gentleman in the waiting room ever find you?" She asked Callie.

"I'll be over there." I said to them both with a nod. Lexie waved me over so I started helping her with her patient.

"Calliope Iphigenia Torres!" I heard Callie's dad shout.

"You can't pray away the gay!" Callie shouted while walking away.

"If this wasn't enough today." I said to Lexie. Owen then told me I was working zone five. With April.

"Thanks for being my tour guides through all this first-day madness." April said to us both.

"Well, we all got assigned zone five, so..." Lexie said as we were walking to our zone.

"I know it's not like you had any choice. Still, you're a peach to pretend otherwise. Being the new kid is- -" April started before Lexie took over. I was handed a clipboard.

"A little scary, I know." Lexie said to her.

"Of course, you were both here when that psycho-intern cabal was marching around chopping out each other's organs. Now that must have been scary." She said to us Lexie and I looked at each other.

"How does she even know that?" I asked Lexie in a whisper.

"Hi. I'm Dr. Kepner. Oh, handcuffs." April said once we got to the patient.

"I'm not an ax murderer. I just broke in to someone's house. Dude came after me with a golf club, beat the crap out of me. Look, you don't need the cop. I can barely move." He said to us, well I didn't mind having the cop here or not.

"Roll him." Lexie said before we started to roll him.

"Oh, we'll keep the cop." April said to him. Once we rolled him we saw the contusions on his back.

"He's got multiple contusions and ecchymosis over his back. He's gonna need lumbar and thoracic films. Down." Lexie said, I smiled because she was right. "Ok, and by the way, it was one organ, an appendix. It wasn't a psycho cabal." Lexie said to April.

"Besides me and the other residents made sure that they put a stop to it before it became a psycho cabal." I said to her annoyedly. I get it she's friends with Jackson and I should be nice to her. But let's just face it he's probably not being nice to my friends.

"Oh. Good to know." She said before writing it down in her notebook. Lexie and I continued working. I went to grab us both a cup of coffee and when I got to the elevator Jackson stopped it.

"How's it been so far?" Jackson asked me. "I know that your day didn't start off so well but I hope that's change by now." He said to me.

"What she did was wrong, she should've just left it empty. Just because she doesn't understand the reason behind it doesn't mean that she should ignore us. And the rest of my day so far has not been good, I've had to listen to April talk about how the interns took an organ from someone. I can't do this Jackson." I said to him, he stopped the elevator. He spoke to me and calmed me down a little before starting the elevator up again. I then went back to Lexie and gave her the coffee I got. We then paged Shepherd to look at the scans we had.

"T&L spine films showed a burst fracture at T-12. And here you can see evidence of instability because the vertebral height loss is greater than 50%, which implies both ALL and PLL are disrupted." Lexie said, yet again April was taking notes.

"What's that mean? I got a broken back? I'll still be able to walk, right?" He asked us.

"You will still be able to walk, burgle, have a full life. Ideas?" Derek said to him before asking Lexie.

"Decompression via corpectomy and reconstruction with strut graft and anterior instrumentation." Lexie answered, I backed that idea.

"Wow. I might be out of my league here." April said to her, as she should be.

"Well, she has a photographic memory. We're all out of that league. Except from Y/l/n who has access to many case files from her parents who have done things like this millions of times." Derek said making me and Lexie smile.

"And here I was thinking you could do transpedicle screws with a posterior approach." April said to Derek, our smiles then faded.

"Hmm." Derek hummed.

"Seemed like a good idea, but, you know, maybe not." April said to him.

"Let's go with the pedicle screws. Ok, get him into pre-op, and let me know when his test results come back." Derek said to us, me and Lexie forced smiles.

"I'm on it." April said before walking away. Lexie and I started talking before taking him to pre-op. We walked past April talking with Derek.

"You gonna fight back at some point or just let her bury you?" He asked us.

"She's not burying us. She's new. She's just finding her footing." Lexie answered.

"She found her footing on the back of your necks." He said to us.

"What do you care?" Lexie asked him.

"I don't know. I like you both." He said before we saw them laughing. "Find her open window. Everyone has one a weak spot, undefended. An open window or a key hidden in a fake rock, that's how I do it." He said to us, I liked that idea.

"Yeah, well, you're a criminal, and we're not." Lexie said to him.

"It's not a crime to do to her what she's doing to you." He said to us.

"And what would that be?" I asked him curiously.

"Making you look like an idiot." He said to us, no one made me out to be an idiot because they knew what would happen. When we got him to pre-op me and Lexie started talking to our patient about a few things.

"With this kind of injury, there is a chance that you could end up with severe weakness in your legs." Lexie said to him.

"That's ok. I carry the stuff out with my arms, not my legs." Billy told us making me ans Lexie smile.

"This is serious, Billy." Lexie said to him.

"You're gonna fix me up fine. Listen...I've got a present for you." He said to us before revealing April's notebook.

"You stole her notebook?" Lexie asked him I'm shock.

"Keep it down. You want my cop all over this? Don't you get it? This is her open window." Billy said while flicking through the pages.

"I don't-we don't want her open window." Lexie answered.

"'You're not just a good doctor. You're a great doctor. You are the future of medicine. Only you can keep you down.' And my favorite is, uh... 'No one can tell it's plastic surgery.'" He said while reading a few entries. We couldn't help but laugh a little.

"Oh, my god." Lexie said to him.

"I think k it's the nose but it could be the boobs. What do you think?" He asked us.

"I think it's the nose." I said to him.

"Gi-give it back to her, and stop reading it." Lexie said to Billy in a raised tone.

"'Future of medicine' alert." He said before chucking the notebook to Lexie.

"You haven't seen my notebook anywhere, have you? Small, red, I was, I was holding it all morning." She said to us both.

"No I haven't seen it. Have you Lexie?" I asked lying.

"Um, I'm not-I'm not sure." Lexie said to her.

"So much for that photographic memory." April said before walking off.

"Good luck finding it." Lexie said to her. She went to lunch with the others whilst I went to Mer's room to give an update. I just wanted to hide in here for the rest of the shift.

"Mer, if I tell you something can you keep it a secret?" I asked while sitting on her bed.

"It depends what it is." She said to me, I gave her a certain look. "No, I will not tell anyone." She said to me.

"So, you know how my Dad used to work for Mercy West." I started. She looked at me. "Well, I met one of his interns ages ago and after Iz and Alex's wedding I started dating one and he's working here now." I said to her, I saw her eyes open.

"Which one?" She asked me.

"Jackson Avery, the one who saves the guy in the OR." I said to her.

"Y/n, I will not tell anyone but you know how this will look." She said to me.

"I do but we didn't know this was going to happen." I said before talking about something else with her. We watched the rest of this movie together before I went to check on Callie. I'd told Derek that I couldn't scrub in and he was ok with it. When I saw Callie she was crying, I sat down beside her and hugged her and she told me about what had happened. I sat with her until Arizona came back from talking with Callie's dad. By the time it had gotten to the end of shift, I'd realised that I didn't really do much work today. When I got to the Residents room I saw April, I ignored her and changed before heading home. I saw Kenneth waiting for me. I then got a call from Iz saying she'd been fired. What a crap day that was. To make it even worse Alex had a note which said that Iz had left him.
