105. I Always Feel Like Somebody's Watchin' Me
For the first time since Callie left. I wasn't working with Arizona, which was kind of a relief. It was hourly hours of the morning and I was staying in the hospital because of the whole merger. Everyone was staying at the hospital, I knew that I wouldn't be let go because I was Bailey's favourite. Mer, Cristina and I walked to the pit together.
"You know, we really should get some sleep before rounds." Mer said to us, we really should.
"Sleep is for wimps. Sleep is for Mercy West residents. Let's fit in another trauma before rounds." Cristina said to us before we reached the desk. Alex approached us.
"Don't say anything about the wig." Alex said, it was Iz's first day back today.
"I won't." I said to him before Iz walked around the corner.
"I'm back. Yeah, I am early, but whatever. I'm back. And because I've been gone so long, the first trauma that comes through those doors, it's mine. Got it?" Iz said to us, we were all looking at the wig. "It's amazing, right?" She asked us.
"What?" Mer and I asked her.
"What's amazing?" Cristina asked her.
"The wig." Iz answered.
"It looks so real, I couldn't even tell." Cristina said, Mer and I were just smiling.
"I've always wanted to try out being a redhead, so I just thought now's the time." Iz said to us with a smile. At least she could try something new out.
"What's wrong with your own hair?" Alex asked her.
"It's peach fuzz chemo hair. I really wanted to put my patients at ease, make them feel comfortable." Iz said to us, Cristina began to whisper to us.
"She looks like a Stepford wife. You've gotta tell her." Cristina said to us.
"I don't want to make a flatline again. You tell." I said to Mer.
"She can't handle it. Just don't stare." Mer said to us, I nodded.
"MVC, who do I have?" Bailey asked us.
"I got it! I can do it!" We all shouted at the same time.
"I'm not your Chief resident anymore. Figure it out." Bailey said before we all shouted over the top of each other.
"Karev, Y/l/n, let's go." Bailey said, at least we finally got something.
"Oh." Cristina got out, me and Alex put the trauma gowns on and left to meet the ambulance.
"Jodie Crowley, 60-year-old driver who lost consciousness and hit a parked car. Vital signs stable. Complains of abdominal pain." The paramedic told us.
"It wasn't a parked car, it was them. They hit us." A guy said to us, we didn't know who he was?
"Uh...Sir, who are you?" Bailey asked him.
"Who am I? Who are you?" He asked Bailey.
"He's my son." Jodie answered. Got it.
"Oh, why don't we go in the waiting room." Alex said while putting a hand on him.
"No! He needs to stay with me. He's a paranoid schizophrenic." Jodie said to us, Bailey looked at him.
"Ok." Bailey said before we got Jodie in the trauma room. "All right, let's put her on a gurney on my count. One, two, three." Bailey said before we transferred her onto the gurney.
"Listen to me, mother. They're trying to get to me throw you. You have to believe me." He said to his mum.
"Tom, they're not real. Look at me. Look at me, honey." Jodie said to him, but he looked away.
"Did you feel dizzy or light-headed before the crash?" Bailey asked her.
"No, I felt fine." She said to us, then what caused this to happen?
"Ok. Abdominal tenderness. I feel a mass." Bailey said while checking her over.
"I've had it for quite a while. Maybe that's what caused me to black out." She said to us, it could be.
"I've been warning her they're trying to hurt her. She won't believe me." Tom said to us, who was trying to hurt her?
"Tom, look at me. You know I wouldn't lie to you." She said to him.
"No! No! You have to believe me. Someone has to believe me. Aliens have impregnated my mother." He said to us, I knew how to deal with people who are schizophrenia. You had to go along with it, we then saw something beating in Jodie's body that wasn't her heart.
"Tom, if that's the case we will save her from the alien inside of her." I said to him with a nod.
"Ok, how long have you had the growth?" Bailey asked her.
"Can you cover the clock? The number five bothers him." Jodie asked us, of course we could.
"Uh...Yeah. Can you get something to cover the clock?" Bailey asked an intern. He then proceeded to cover the clock.
"Are those cameras?" Tom asked while looking at the smoke detector.
"Tommy, what do we need from the store?" Jodie asked him but he was too busy looking.
"Why won't they leave me alone?" He asked himself.
"Tommy, do you need fruit?" She asked him.
"Yeah, why won't you leave me alone?" Tom asked wanting an answer.
"What kind of fruit do we need, honey? Tom, what kind of fruit?" She asked to distract him.
"Um...Apples, pears...strawberries?" He said not knowing if he'd got the order right.
"Make a list." She said to him before turning to Lexie. "Could you give him a pencil and some paper?" She asked her.
"Yeah." Lexie responded before reaching in her pocket.
"He needs something to distract him from the voices." She said to us.
"Ma'am, the growth." Bailey said bringing her attention back.
"Oh, uh...yeah. I'm sorry. I've had it for a while. I've been meaning to get it checked, but, as you can see, my son's illness is a full-time job." She said to us as Tom sat down and started writing the list. Bailey, Alex and I left the room.
"Karev, I'm gonna need you to get Mr. Crowley's wrist X-rayed while Y/l/n and I get her up to MRI." Bailey said to him, I knew Alex wouldn't be able to cope.
"Why can't one of these fetuses baby-sit? If that's huge thing's a AAA, I want in." Alex said to Bailey, I knew it.
"I can do the wrist." Lexie said to him. All the interns started talking over each other.
"Dr. Karev has more experience." Bailey said while glaring at him.
"The patient is paranoid and hyper-vigilant which means he's bound to pick up on the fact that Dr. Karev doesn't want to be here. He may interpret that as Dr. Karev being out to get him. I aced my Psych clerkship." Lexie said to us.
"I can keep an I eye on her because I have experience with people like that. My brother's best friend is the same." I said to them, Bailey looked impressed with us. Lexie and I managed to get him to another room and looked after his arm.
"I just got my hair cut." He said to us.
"Oh. It looks nice." Lexie said to him.
"It suits you very well." I said to him with a smile.
"The nurse out there, the one with the red hair she's laughing at me. You tell her I just got it cut, and they cut it too short. That's why my ears sticking out." He told us.
"I'm sure she's not laugh at you. How's that feel?" Lexie asked him, I was just there to supervise.
"It feels like my hand is falling off. Feels like...they put something in it to make my hand fall off. Like snakes or something. You don't have a name tag." He said while looking at Lexie, it was because she had to change her coat. But he wouldn't know that.
"Um...Oh, I--I guess I don't." Lexie answered.
"The other doctor has a name tag on her coat." He said, meaning towards me.
"I had to change my lab coat. And this- -" Lexie answered with a smile.
"You think I'm an idiot? You're working for them. You got my mother. Now you're trying to get me. Stay away from me!" He shouted at her.
"She's on your side, she's protecting you from them." I said to him calmly.
"Your working with them as well!" He shouted at me. "I keep telling you people! Just stay away from us!" He said before throwing Lexie on the ground.
"Lexie, are you okay?" I asked her concernedly.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She said to me, that was good. Olivia then called security.
"We called security. They're on their way." She said to us as we left the room.
'Where's Psych? We asked you to page them an hour ago." Lexie said in a raised voice.
"I paged them twice. You wanna see the log book?" Olivia asked us.
"We would like to know how a paranoid patient managed to leave the ER. Where the hell were you?" I asked her, this was just unacceptable.
"I had stepped away from my desk to deal with another patient. And normally, being a punching bag for the doctors is just a part of the job. But there's a merger and we're all being looked at. And I am not about to go down for a mistake that wasn't mine. So, if you'll both excuse me, I'll page Psych again." She said to us angrily, I get it it wasn't her fault but she still should've tried harder to get Psych. Me and Lexie started looking for Bailey, when we found her I knew she wasn't going to be happy.
"Have you seen Tom?" Lexie asked her.
"I thought he was with you." Bailey answered.
"He was but he left. He attacked me and left." Lexie said to her.
"He? You both told me you could handle this." She said to us.
"We thought we could, but don't worry it's all under control. We've called security. We just thought that his mum might have an idea." I said to Bailey. She was disappointed with us.
"His mom has a AAA. The last thing she needs to know is that her mentally ill son is loose in the hospital!" Bailey shouted at us, we knew how this looked.
"We know this is bad. We know this is really, really bad." Lexie said to her in a panic.
"I'm gonna stop listening to you because the words you are saying are hurting me. Find him!" She said to us, I could hear the anger in her voice.
"Yes." Lexie said before we both went to find him. We separated to search more ground. When I made it to the main area, I saw him fall down the stairs. I paged Owen and we admitted Tom. Owen talked with Jodie whilst I was talking with the nurses about what we should do. We started getting ready to an ultrasound, once we started we checked for any internal bleeding. There was some and a damaged spleen. I went to get something to eat and saw Callie, she was talking about possibly moving to Portland. Bailey them found me to tell me I was off the case. The rest of the day I decided to work on discharging people. After that I decided to work in the pit before Bailey paged me to the OR. This was a bit of a shock. Both Jodie and Tom were in there while I entered.
"What do we need from the store, sweetheart?" Jodie asked before we were about to put Tom under. "Tell me what we need from the store." She said to him.
"Apples, pears, strawberries. Apples, pears, strawberries. Pears, apples..." He said listing what the needed.
"What if I don't make it?" Jodie asked Bailey.
"You don't have to worry about that. Ok? Let me do that." Bailey said to her, Owen and Lexie then entered. Jodie looked at Tom quickly. "Let's go." Bailey said before leaving with Jodie and a few nurses. After the surgery Mer paged me to the desk, Cristina, Alex and Iz arrived the same time as me.
"What's going on? You paged us." Alex said to her, I was just hoping this wasn't anything serious.
"Check your e-mail." Mer said to us, what was in the e-mail.
"For what?" Iz asked her.
"HR. If you got cut, you'll have an e-mail. I didn't get one, but I've been calm through this crisis." Mer said as I started to check my e-mail. Nothing, I was safe. "I have been calm. But if one of us gets cut, I will not be calm." Mer said to us.
"I got nothing." I said to her with a smile.
"No e-mail." Cristina said after exhaling.
"I'm fine." Alex said, we all looked at Iz.
"I'm good, too." She said making me sigh in relief.
"Good! See? I knew it. I knew none of us would get cut." Mer said to us with a smile.
"Yet. There's gonna be another round." Cristina said before walking away.
"This was just phase one. Who knows how many phases there's gonna be." I said to them before walking away after her. We then started to say goodbye to the people who were going. Nurse Olivia was leaving and I felt a bit sad. After today there was no way I would still have a job.
