Shehnaaz was running. Breathless and aching all over— calling out frantically, screaming. The air on her face was chilling, but she could still feel sweat trickling down her face— maybe it was the tears that were streaming down her face. She could feel her heart racing, fear etched across every square inch of her being.
It felt like ages. She had been running for far too long, she had come too far away from home— yet the fear hadn't subsided. It had been building stronger, the farther she ran.
Away from home.
Away from peace.
Soon, she would be too tired to scream anymore and soon after, even to run. She was scared of that moment more than anything else in this world.
She was scared of succumbing. She was scared of losing.
So she ran, every step more painful than the last she took and yet she couldn't stop running. She couldn't succumb.
She called out again. Screaming and thrashing. Crying for peace, for safety. The voices were growing louder and louder while she grew weaker and weaker.
"Sidharth!" She cried, loud enough to hear it echo back to her. Her voice came back and he didn't. She screamed again, desperate. "Sidharth.. please!!"
Bacha mujhe. Mujhse aur nahi bhaaga ja raha.
Shehnaaz sobbed. Somehow, she had twisted her ankle. She felt her body shut down, her legs turning limp, his voice dying. The shadows creeped closer and she closed her eyes. "Sidharth." She screamed, with the last of her voice.
*~*
Shehnaaz shot upright, looking around frantically as she screamed Sidharth's name with all her might.
She was in her room, entangled oddly within her comforter and crying.
Horrified.
She couldn't comprehend anything. Nothing would make sense after that. Her heart was racing in fear, her face wet with tears and breathing ragged.
Sidharth rushed into the room, alarmed. "Shehnaaz.. kya hua?" He asked, only halfway through the door.
Shehnaaz was sobbing, eyes wide, face red. Sidharth ran into the room seeing her like that. "Baby.. kya hua?"
Her whole body shook with sobs— even as Sidharth pulled her into his arms, trying to get her to calm down. Tears streamed faster. "Sidharth.." She whimpered, wrapping her fingers around his T-Shirt, trying to pull him closer.
Sidharth rubbed her back. "I'm here. Mai yaheen hoon baby. Tere paas hi hoon meri jaan." He assured her.
Shehnaaz was breathing harshly, shaking and mumbling incoherently, leaning against his chest. Sidharth looked at her worried. What had even happened?
"Naaz.. meri jaan— kya hua?" He asked concerned. "Baat kar mujhse meri jaan."
"Sidharth.." Shehnaaz sniffed. "Please.. Sidharth.."
"Kya baby.. Kya hua meri jaan? Bata mujhe? Mai hoon tere paas mera baccha." He said, pressing soft, quick kisses on her head.
"Tu nahi aaya." She sobbed breathlessly. "Mene kitna bulaaya tujhe. Tu nahi aaya."
Sidharth frowned. What?
"Mai bula rahi thi tujhe. Kitna cheekh rahi thi.." She explained, hysterical. "Woh.. peeche.. woh.. parchaayi—"
Shehnaaz broke down again, shaking.
"I'm sorry meri jaan.." Sidharth said sincerely. "Maaf karde.. I'm sorry mera baccha. Mujhe awaaz nahi aa rahi thi teri."
Sidharth pulled her into his lap, holding her tightly. "I'm here— yahan hoon ab. Darr mat meri jaan."
It was a nightmare and by the looks of it. A particular scary one at that.
Shehnaaz was still sniffling, hidden in his arms.
Sidharth just held her, as close as he possibly could and mumbled sweetly to her. "Kucch nahi hua." He whispered over and over again as she slowly returned to her senses.
Almost ten minutes later, Sidharth tried to loosen his grip on her, just to test the waters and Shehnaaz let out a startled gasp, curling against him. "Matt ja.."
Sidharth immediately resumed his grip. "Yahaan hi hoon. Kaheen nahi ja raha. Shaant hoja."
Shehnaaz shook her head, frantically. "Tu jaa raha tha."
Sidharth rested his chin on top of her head, sighing softly. "Nahi ja raha tha baby. Teri kasam. Kaheen nahi ja raha."
He ran his fingers through her hair, soothingly. "Bura sapna tha meri jaan."
Shehnaaz closed her eyes. "Tu nahi tha wahan. Mai bhaag rahi thi.." She mumbled, stubbornly. "Mai tujhe bula rahi thi. Kitna cheekh rahi thi mai."
Sidharth sighed. "Bura sapna tha mera baccha. I'm sorry mai nahi aaya tujhe bachaane." He said quietly.
He meant it with all his heart, even if he knew he had no control over her dreams and what turn they might take. He meant it when he said he was sorry. He wanted to be there. He wanted to save her, even from nightmares.
"Mai uthi toh bhi tu nahi tha." She whined, almost as if complaining about him. "Tu nahi dikha mujhe."
"Mai bahar tha meri jaan. Kaam kar raha tha." He responded with a hint of sadness. "Mai ab hoon na tere paas. Kucch nahi hoga tujhe. Koi parchaayi tera kucch nahi bigaad sakti."
"Promise?" She asked, looking up only briefly, her eyes wide and innocent were red and glossy.
Sidharth pressed his lips gently on her forehead. "Cross my heart. Mai hoon na tere paas. Koi kucch nahi karega."
"Tu kaheen nahi jaayega na?" She asked innocently, a mild note of panic in her voice still stood out.
"Tujhe chodke kahan jaaunga baby?" He asked rhetorically. "Tu jaan hai na meri?"
Shehnaaz nodded, satisfied.
Sidharth smiled softly. "Paani piyegi?" He asked.
Shehnaaz shook her head. "Tu jaane ke bahane matt dhund. Idhar hi baitha reh chup-chaap."
Sidharth chuckled. "Tujhe chodke nahi jaa raha meri jaan. Kitchen tak ja raha hoon bas. Itna cheekha hai mera baccha, sapne me bhi.. uthke bhi itni zor ki cheekh maari, aur phir tab se kitni der tak roti rahi. Gala sookh raha hoga na tera?" He asked gently.
Shehnaaz shook her head, stubbornly. "Tu paas reh."
He sighed. He couldn't even be mad at her.
"Okay. Let's just stay put." Sidharth said softly.
A few minutes later, Sidharth felt her head slip slightly and her hold on him loosened. He looked down to see his angel asleep with a small pout on her face.
Sidharth smiled affectionately as he shifted her carefully into a more comfortable position on the bed.
Unfortunately, just as he was about to remove his arm from under her head, she opened her eyes, still frantic.
Sidharth's eyebrows furrowed. "Shehnaaz.. so ja darling." He said softly. "Mai yaheen hoon bache."
Shehnaaz blinked a few times, "Tu jaa raha tha?" She asked in a low, sleepy voice
Sidharth shook his head.
Shehnaaz crawled back into his arms. "Yaheen reh."
Sidharth bent over to kiss her head. "So ja meri jaan. Mai nahi ja raha kaheen."
Shehnaaz closed her eyes, "Thapki.."
Sidharth chuckled, patting her head gently.
It took her a little over a minute to fall asleep again, but this time Sidharth knew better than trying to detach her from himself so just as he felt her slipping into a deep sleep, he tightened his hold on her, holding her against his chest making sure that he doesn't disturb her sleep.
She was his baby and if she wanted to sleep on his chest that night, keep him as close to herself as possible she deserved to do that because there was no one else he'd rather do this for than her. His Naaz."Good night, my sweet angel." He whispered to her. "Have lots and lots of sweet dreams."
Shehnaaz smiled against his chest.
Maybe she was having a good dream.

I swear to god, itna mushkil hota hai na sana ka breakdown dikhaana, kyonki ussko rote hue sochke bhi rona aane lagta hai.. but jabtak uska Sidharth uske paas hai, woh uske aansu bhi ponchega aur usse hasa bhi dega. I trust my rainbow man to the fullest.
