"Is that him? The guy you were talking about? The weird one?"

"He's so weird, he sits by himself all day. Even at lunch."

"He always keeps his head down and doesn't talk to anyone, not even the teachers."

"Maybe he slept with a teacher or something horrible like that. I heard one of the science teachers left last year in the middle of the year. Maybe that's it."

"WILL YOU ALL SHUT UP?!" Simon yelled out toward the group of year 9 students, who all immediately shut up.

Simon sighed in relief as the group left the older boy at his own locker. He noticed Josh, the boy everyone seems to talk about, stand at another locker. He had heard what Simon had done, yet didn't do anymore than put his books in his locker and walk away.

The boy intrigued Simon, and this made him want to find out more about him.

The crowded tables and loud noises made Josh uneasy, but he was just happy he was alone, which calmed him. Being alone was what Josh was used to, and he hated change more than anything, so he didn't want that to change in any way.

But when a preppy blonde boy with a bright smile sat next to him at his circular table, he was able to make an exception.

"Hi there!" His voice made Josh realize who he was, he was the boy that stood up to him in the hallway.

All Josh could do was smile and nod at the boy, but he then realized it was kind of rude. After a few seconds, the boy spoke again.

"I'm Simon, I've seen you around school." Josh, after having his head down, looked up. "I just wanted to see how you were doing and say hi." Knowing someone cared made Josh smile a bit, but it also terrified him.

When Josh had his head all the way up, he then realized something- people were staring. They weren't even just staring, they were whispering and smirking at the two-no- at Josh. Then he realized something else- was Simon doing this just for laughs?

"You need to go." Josh spoke sternly and softly. Simon gave the boy a questioning look and then turned around a bit to see what Josh was looking at.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to-"

"Please. I hate the attention. I just want you to leave." Josh said but Simon shook his head and smiled sadly at Josh.

"No, I won't. I-I won't let a couple of teenagers stop me from sitting with you." This shocked Josh, to say the least, but he nodded in the end.

The whispers continued, and they grew and grew, but so did the conversation between Josh and Simon.

The following day Simon came and sat with Josh at his circular table. He ignored more stares and whispers and continued talking to Josh.

"When I was 10, I moved to the area with my brothers and parents. We moved to a big house and got a dog. I came out to my parents as gay when I was 13, and now I'm very open about it." Simon shared his life story with Josh like he was a long lost friend. "What about you? When did you move here?"

"Well I-"

"Simon Minter!" The whole cafeteria went silent. "Simon Minter what the hell are you doing?!" Simon froze, knowing immediately who it was.

Josh turned to see who it was, and even he knew. Olajide Olatunji.

"Simon answer me!" The boy was right behind Simon, who was still frozen.

"I'm having lunch with a friend." Simon said loud enough for the tables around to hear. JJ turned to Josh and scoffed.

"I was sick yesterday, maybe I shouldn't have been. You're MY boyfriend. You sit with ME. Not this weird kid that you met in the trash. Come on." JJ went to grab Simon's hand but he stood up to face JJ before he did.

"Josh is MY friend. I've already planned on breaking up with you. I don't care if I'm not popular anymore, but you're not the person I remember. Leave before this gets worse for you." And with that, JJ scoffed again at Josh, who was looking at the table, and walked away.

The cafeteria started growing with noise again, and this time, there were no whispers, and no staring.

"Why'd you do that?" Josh's voice was more quiet than normal. Simon smiled.

"I already wanted to break up with him. It's fine."

"No, stand up for me. That's the second time. As well as sit with me, and for the whole school to see." Simon thought for a moment.

"There's more of you than just the weird kid that sits in the corner with his head down. You have a story, which I'd love to hear more of." Josh smiled more, making his eyes sparkle at Simon.

"Me and you are going to be good friends, Simon."
