(45) Epilogue
"I still can't believe we're not high school students anymore."
Spencer twirls the graduation cap around in her hands, perched on the edge of my bed while I rummage through my dresser looking for the new bikini that I'd bought last week.
We'd ceremoniously thrown our caps in the air at the end of graduation but she and a lot of others salvaged them as a keepsake. Mine is now hanging from its tassels beside my mirror until I find a more permanent spot for it. Which I won't bother to do until I get to California. I can picture it in a frame above my desk or something cute like that.
"Everything's changing Dallas."
The break in her voice brings me to attention and when I spin around I'm faced with a sobbing Spencer. I can't exactly say that I'm surprised considering how emotional she's been as of late. Anything and everything turns her into a blubbering mess.
"Spence, relax."
I've finally located the new pale blue bikini so I take a moment to sit beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder so that she can lean on me.
"You're leaving for California..." she wails, her shoulders shaking with loud sobs. "I'm gonna be a freaking mother! My parents are getting married. WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING?"
"Girl, you need to breathe!" I order. She's right, a lot is changing in the span of summer. But it's inevitable. Things in life can't stay the same. I'm not entirely thrilled about it either, considering I'll be a two-hour plane journey from my boyfriend. But there isn't a lot that I can do about that. "We're still best friends and as for the rest, well it's change that I know you can handle."
"Oh, yeah I'm real equipped to raise a child," she blubbers sarcastically, sitting up straight and slipping her fingers under her glasses so that she can rub her eyes.
"Well... I mean perhaps you should have thought about that before yo-"
"Yeah I know!" she interrupts.
She stands up and takes a deep breath, her hands rest on her hips while she stares straight ahead and attempts to get a grip.
"Okay, I'm good."
"You sure?"
"Yeap."
"Right," I stand up and give her shoulder a comforting caress, "I'm going to change. I'll be back in a sec."
I dash down the corridor and into the bathroom, changing as quickly as I can. Drayton had made good on his plan to host a graduation pool party. From what I'd gathered, most of the senior class would be there, as well as plus ones and no doubt some juniors too. Basically, I don't expect that it'll be a small event by any stretch of the imagination.
Once I've got the bikini on, I slip a loose white summer dress on and throw the clothes I'd been wearing, into the hamper. On the way back to the bedroom, I consider getting a towel from the corridor cupboard but when my hand meets the handle, it occurs to me that I can just borrow one of Drayton's. Last week when I'd slept over at his house, his mother insisted that I shower at their house when she'd come back from the store with a new pile of plush white towels that were softer than a cloud. She wouldn't hear it when I said that I'd just had a shower. But she was right. They felt amazing. However, I can still remember her disappointment when I told her that I had ended up covered in white fluff because new towels are meant to be washed first. Never mind.
"Spencer! You look gorgeous," I admire when I step back inside my bedroom and glance over the one piece that she's changed into. It's got patterned cut-outs running up the side and her bump is hardly visible. She could pass it off for mild bloating in all honesty. I won't tell her that though. She'll get all self-conscious and refuse to go.
"Ya think?" She stares in the full-length mirror with a worried expression, running her hand up her front as if she can smooth the little pouch out.
"Hello...?" Nathan's voice sounds from behind the door as he taps on it a few times.
"Come in."
He appears in a less casual ensemble than he'd been wearing an hour ago. He'd had to fish out a suit from the back of his closet for the graduation. It was our Dad's. Nathan's never bothered to buy one of his own considering we could count on one hand the amount of events he's been to that would require one. It'd made me a little emotional to see him in our father's suit, looking handsome and, well - grown up.
He didn't waste any time changing back into his shorts and a fitted t-shirt.
"Hey, I didn't get to give you your gift yet," he murmurs to me but his gaze lingers on Spencer for a moment until he meets my pointed expression. "Here."
I take the little gift box from his outstretched hand and pull the ribbon off. Spencer comes to stand beside me while I fumble with the lid. When I finally glance inside the box, I gasp, a hand flying over my mouth as I look up at Nathan.
Inside is a locket that had belonged to our Mother. I'd loved it as a child and used to plead to wear it, but it was a family heirloom and I was merely allowed to look at it from where it hung above my Mothers dresser. When she died I'd looked for it, not understanding where it had gone. I'd been devastated for the longest time that it seemingly vanished and it would seem that my big brother has had it this entire time.
It's been spruced up. The silver now shining a pristine gleam and the antique engraved pattern and family name is easily visible. I lift it out of the box by its chain and discard the packaging to Spencer, not able to take my eyes off the piece of jewellery I never thought I'd see again.
"Open it," Nathan instructs with a smile.
Being careful with the fragile heirloom, I click the tiny button on the side and can no longer hold back the tears when I see the photos inside.
On the left is a recent photo of Nathan and I, a beach selfie that looks a little out of place in the vintage necklace. But I love it nonetheless. On the right is the last picture we have of our parents together. It was taken at my ninth birthday just a month or so before they passed. They look so in love. The photos have been shrunk and professionally installed into the little compartments. It's the most incredible graduation gift that I could possibly ask for.
"Thank you Nathan!" I jump into his arms and sob like a child. It's the most sentimental and valuable gift that he's ever given me and it means, everything. "I love it."
"I've been saving that, just for you." He grins when I step back and swipe at my tear-stained cheeks.
"You're a legend. I love it," I confirm again, not able to take my eyes off of it. If I wasn't about to go to a pool party, I'd put it on. But it's far too valuable to risk getting damaged, so instead I place it on my dresser where it'll be safe.
"I got something for you as well Spence," Nathan murmurs quietly and pulls another gift box from his back pocket. Just a modern-day Santa Claus isn't he.
I wander back towards the two of them and find Spencer with a genuine look of surprise on her face as she accepts the little gift. "Thanks Nathan." She mumbles.
"It's not much," Nathan mentions while she undoes the ribbon. She glances up and rolls her eyes with a small smile. Nathan is aware of the brand new jeep sitting outside, courtesy of Spencer's parents. Sure, his graduation gift can't equate to that value but it's damn sweet that he thought of her anyway.
When the box is open and the gift revealed, both of us coo with appreciation. It's a gorgeous Pandora bracelet. I'm immediately curious as to how he could afford such a gift, considering it's filled with precious charms. There's a sapphire charm, a little bottle of champagne, a high heel, the Disney symbol, a baby bottle, a slice of pizza, a few intricately designed hearts and a graduation cap. Spencer twirls it around, closely inspecting each gorgeous charm. It occurs to me that these things relate to her. They're things that identify who she is. It's a well thought out, meaningful gift and I can't help but glare at my brother. Of course, he's unaware because he's busy watching her.
He couldn't...
No that's outrageous. She's like a little sister to him and always has been.
"This is so fucking cute Nathan!" Spencer cries out before she launches herself at him, taking him by surprise. He's stunned for a moment but quickly returns her embrace, hugging her so tightly that she's lifted off her feet for a moment.
"You're welcome." He smiles when they've broken apart.
"Are you coming to the pool party?" Spencer asks, fastening the new accessory around her wrist, while she waits for an answer.
Nathan glances at me and finally acknowledges the suspicious stare that I'm shooting in his direction. He shrugs his shoulders as if to feign total oblivion. I don't know what the hell is up with this weirdo but he better not be running out of potential in this tiny town, which is the only reason I could think he'd want to add Spencer to his belt of conquests.
There's no way he is messing with my pregnant, taken best friend.
"Uh, na," he finally chuckles, scratching the back of his head. "I'm a bit old to be chilling with a bunch of teenagers."
"Your age doesn't matter, goof!" Spencer giggles but Nathan visibly swallows, looking as though he was just told he'd be able to go pro one day.
"Nathan's busy," I interject, taking over Spencer's attempts to fasten the clip on her bracelet. "He's got stuff on. With the boys."
"Yeap," Nathan agrees without hesitation, no doubt hearing the warning in my voice. He starts heading towards the door, waving out a goodbye before he disappears.
"I'll be right back," I tell Spencer and follow after him, shutting the bedroom door behind me.
"Oi!" I grip his shoulder before he can vanish into the confines of his room. "What the hell? Are you trying to screw Spencer?"
"What the fuck?" he bites. "Of course not."
"Why are you being all flirty and shit?"
He rolls his eyes and looks blatantly frustrated but he doesn't deny my claims. Nathan isn't a relationship man. He's a hit and quit and he's no doubt bored of all the females around here because he's been through every single one of them. He is NOT touching my best friend.
"She's in a relationship Nathan, not to mention, she's pregnant!" I tap my forehead with my palm as if to label him a total moron. "Do you have like a pregnancy fetish."
"Bye Dallas!" he snaps with wide eyes, pushing me over the threshold so that he can shut the door. "Have fun at your pool party!"

When we arrive at Drayton's, I don't bother heading up the front steps. Instead, Spencer and I follow the footpath around the side of the house, the music becomes louder, along with the sounds of splashing and squeals.
The back gate is wide open and things are well and truly, in full swing. The back deck is set up with a table full of food that looks so good, I feel it has to be catered. There are dozens of lounge chairs spread out around the concrete pool area. Girls lay on blow-up pool beds, while a bunch of guys are having an intense match of water volley at the other end of the huge pool.
Spencer and I wander through the yard but I'm soon solo as Grayson appears and whisks her away. Just a few moments later I spot them by the food table and I have to giggle. He knows her needs.
I greet a bunch of the girls from the squad and note that Emily is nowhere to be seen. Thank God. She's probably off with Lincoln, perhaps planning on how they'll announce their forbidden love to her folks.
My gaze lands on Drayton who's sitting at the edge of the pool with his feet hanging in the water. He's wearing his aviators and blackboard shorts that hang low on his hips. His muscled body is on full display, the dips of his abs and defined V line that trails into his boardies. His olive skin glistens under the sunlight and ugh, will I ever get used to the sight of him?
I smile but leave him chatting to his friends. He hasn't seen me yet so I dart up the deck steps and disappear inside the open sliding doors that lead to the kitchen.
"Dallas!" Ellie greets from beside the countertop. She and Cass are adorned with a glass of wine and a platter of cheese and crackers. They both look gorgeous in floor-length summer dresses and designer hats. "Congratulations on graduating honey!"
She pulls me into a quick one-armed hug. "Congratulations," Cass offers with a bright smile.
"Thanks!" I respond, feeling warm at the regards. It's nice to have the support of one of my boyfriends parents.
Speak of the devil, Leroy comes sauntering into the kitchen in a loose white dress shirt, the top buttons undone and a pair of slacks rolled up at the ankles. He seems to pull off looking classy and casual at the same time.
"Dallas." He nods with disinterest, pulling the fridge open and retrieving a beer.
"Leroy." I force a smile because I want to be the mature one in this situation. He gives me a smug look as he pulls the cap off his beer off and leaves it on the countertop, wandering out as nonchalant as he'd entered.
"Sorry about him honey." Ellie smiles sadly after her husband is out of earshot. "He's a stubborn man."
I'm about to ask what she sees in him? Perhaps she's still married for benefits. But I immediately dismiss that notion. She's such a genuine and kind-hearted woman, not to mention her business is a huge success. She doesn't need the support of a retired NFL player. Perhaps he's like Drayton in that regard. An asshole to anyone who he deems unworthy of his time, but an absolute gentleman to the woman of his interest.
"Cheer!" Drayton's voice bellows from behind me and when I turn around I find him walking towards me, pulling his aviators off now that he's out of the bright sunlight. "Spencer said you were here, you didn't come and see me."
"Sorry." I laugh as he pulls me into a tight hug. "You were talking to the guys. I didn't wanna interrupt."
"Pssh." He waves his hand dismissively, releasing our hug but keeping one arm wrapped around my waist. "I'd much rather talk to you babe."
"Remember when our men used to dote on us that way." Cass sighs, bringing the wine glass to her lips with disappointment etched in her features.
"Speak for yourself." Ellie giggles. It's a little adorable and answers my unspoken question. She obviously still has a great relationship with Leroy. While he and I aren't on the best terms, I'm glad he treats his wife well.
"Come on," Dray starts steering us in the direction of the staircase outside the kitchen, "I wanna give you your graduation present."
"What?!" I yelp, attempting to plant my feet flat so that he can't push me up the stairs. It doesn't work in the slightest, he just keeps a firm arm wrapped around me to ensure that I can't stop walking. "Dray, we said no graduation gifts. I didn't get you anything."
"Are you well today?" he asks as he guides the two of us into his bedroom. "Feeling okay? Are you happy? Do you love me?"
"Yes?" I mumble, not entirely sure where the twenty questions have come from. "To all of it."
"Then you've given me everything that I need." His answer is so cavalier. He just leaves me standing by his bed while he rummages through his top drawer as if he didn't just cause a flood between my thighs.
"Turn around!" he orders, finally giving me his attention. His hand remains inside the drawer but it would seem as though he's found what he was looking for.
When I've turned around so that I'm facing the door, I hear the sound of his feet against the soft carpet and within a few moments, an object comes down in front of my face, a cold chain settling around my neck.
I look down and pick up the small key that's hanging from my neck. There's no doubt that I'm confused while I stare at the item in the palm of my hand. I start to turn around, still staring at the foreign object. "What's the key fo-"
Drayton's holding his phone up when I turn right around and on the screen there's a picture of a gorgeous black motorcycle. It's got purple detailing around the trim and handlebars. It isn't an overwhelming purple but its tasteful.
"This is waiting in a warehouse in California." Drayton smiles, looking incredibly proud of himself. "It's yours."
"You bought me a fucking motorcycle?!" I squeal, snatching the phone out of his hand so that I can get a closer look. I'm in utter disbelief. I mean, I know he's insane, but this is an entirely different level.
"Yep!" He smiles and slides his hands into his swim short pockets. "Thought you could use some transport. And I know you love to ride my bike. When you're not riding me of course." He winks and I don't even have the wit to respond. I'm too far floored at this outrageous gesture.
"This is too much!" I cry and throw the phone on the bed before my hands find themselves tangled in my hair. "I didn't even get you anything. That must have cost a lot of money. You can't jus-"
I'm silenced by his mouth crashing down on mine and his arms encircling my waist so that our fronts are crushed together. It isn't brief or fleeting, he kisses me for a long time, his tongue exploring mine and his hands travelling the small of my back and waist. When we finally break apart, I'm breathless. I'm a panting, wound up mess. He doesn't release his hold, he just gives me that seductive smirk that causes my insides to turn to jelly.
"I love you Cheer. And the fact that you love me too, is enough. I don't need anything more than that. I've got the funds to buy whatever I want." He leans forward and gives me a more gentle chaste kiss. "What I need is you. As long as I have that. I'm good."
"Well- me too!" I pout. "You didn't have to get me a motorcycle!"
"I wanted too." He grins. "And I could. And I did. So shut up and tell me you love me."
A breathy chuckle expels air from my nose and I playfully roll my eyes. "Of course I love you. So damn much."
"Good. Now let's have the best summer of our lives together."
• • •
And that's what we did. We spent almost every day together. I was sure to make time for Nathan and Spencer of course. But being apart from Drayton for more than a few days at a time just wasn't an option. I'm aware that I have an obsession, but I like to think of it more as a dedication.
Nicolás and Camilla's wedding was pure perfection. The sun shone bright, the water was crystal clear. The flowers and scenery was to die for. The entire occasion was incredibly romantic and the looks that Drayton gave me that day will forever be imprinted on my heart. He looked at me as though he didn't have a doubt in his mind, that we'd be the ones tying the knot one day. We'd almost made it through the entire reception without disappearing, but eventually we just couldn't keep our hands to ourselves any longer.
What's new?
We got to finish our Hollywood holiday. It was perfect of course. The sightseeing never ended. The romance was off the charts and I think we fell more in love than we've ever been before. I never had a bucket list before but I came up with one the night Drayton snuck us up to the Hollywood sign. I was able to tick it off the same night.
Endless days were spent at different beaches, on our hilltop and in Drayton's pool. Every single day was spent doing something memorable and I can't wait to print out the hundreds of photos that I have to decorate my new dorm room.
Which brings us to today. School starts in one week and my flight to California leaves. It'd been easy to pretend that nothing would be changing at the end of summer while we were busy with our endless activities. But my room is officially packed, my belongings have been shipped and I've said my goodbyes to everyone. Spencer didn't take to my departure too well. She refused to come to the airport because she couldn't handle the pain of seeing me off. We'd shared a lot of tears and hugs and I promised I'd be back for the birth of her little girl! There's no hiding her bump now, it's large and in charge and it's only going to get bigger. She's still got a banging bod though. It doesn't surprise me.
"You're gonna miss your flight if you don't get a move on Dallas." Nathan checks his phone again, shifting his weight while he watches the other flight occupants handing over there boarding passes.
"He isn't here. He said he'd be here." I can't tear my eyes away from the double doors that lead in from the car park. Drayton promised he'd see me off and it's stressful to think that he won't make it.
"He's coming to visit you in two weeks, Dallas!" Nathan exclaims, putting his hand on my shoulder and pushing me towards the flight attendant that's boarding the gate.
"I'm worried about him!" I clip, shrugging him off and turning back towards the door. "What if something's wrong. He said he'd be here."
"Yeah, but he isn't. I'm sure he's fine." Nathan continues pushing me towards the gate. "He probably just got caught up with something."
It doesn't feel right. Something is definitely off. Drayton wouldn't miss saying goodbye. Not when he swore that he'd be here. But Nathan is right. The final boarding call has already been announced and the doors are about to close. If I don't leave now, I'll have to purchase a new ticket and I definitely can't afford that.
"Find out if he's okay? Please?"
"Of course!" Nathan nods and pulls me into an abrupt hug. "I'll go hunt him down right now."
"Thanks big brother." I hold him a little tighter, realising that I won't see him for a while and I'll miss him. "I'll see you soon?"
"You better. Come back and visit soon okay." He holds my shoulders at arm's length and smiles like a proud big brother. "I'll see you at thanksgiving for sure anyway."
"Yeah." I laugh and adjust the carry on bag that hangs from my shoulder. "I love you."
"Love you too kiddo."
When I've put the carry on bag in its overhead compartment and fallen into the assigned seat with a huff, I begin to feel frustrated. It bothers me that leaving had to be tainted by Drayton's no show. I should have been more focused on saying goodbye to Nathan and absorbing the fact that I'm leaving Archwood. It's really happening. A moment that I've been working towards for years and all I can think about is the fact that Drayton wasn't at the airport to say goodbye.
My phone chimes in my pocket and a rush of adrenaline starts coursing through my veins. I can't help but feel like it's going to be bad news and I fumble with my shorts pocket while I pull the cellphone out as fast as possible.
D R A Y • D R A Y
I'm sorry I wasn't there. But I can't do it Dallas. I can't do long distance. I thought I could. But it's not for me. Maybe if we cross paths again one day, we'll find our way back to each other. I'm sorry. x
I think I read the text about seventeen times. I feel numb and panicked at the same time. This has to be a joke. This fûcking asshole is joking.
I quickly press call on the contact and hold it to my ear with a trembling hand and an unsteady heartbeat. I feel as though I'm about to throw up.
"The number you are trying to reach is no longer in service."
Oh God.
What the fuck is happening.
•
"Hey! Welcome to CalArts!"
I stare at the perky college girl with a clipboard and feel detached. I spent the entire time on the plane in an absolute state. I couldn't stop bawling and the sweet old lady beside me was extremely concerned. The sniffling is still ongoing. I'm struggling to keep it together while I lug my belongings across the school campus.
"If you leave your bags here with a room number, we'll deliver them to you!" The girl smiles and gestures to the spot beside her.
"Oh, I can take them," I mumble with a small voice.
"Please leave them!" She clasps her hands together with a pleading expression. "I set up this system and so far no one has used the service. Please let me bring up your bags."
I don't want to stand here and argue. All I want is to be alone so that I can fall apart in total privacy. I'm so distraught, but I'm numb and devoid of emotion at the same time. It's something I'm struggling to comprehend but all I know is that I need to be alone so that I can cry because I sure as hell, am not done.
"Sure."
I give her the room number and leave my things with her. When I make it up to the single dorm room, I'm immediately sent into an hysterical frenzy. Drayton and I had come here together over summer. We'd christened the mattress in the far corner of the room. We'd spent an hour in here doing unspeakable things because that's us.
Or it was.
I collapse to my knees, unable to physically stay standing and my face disappears in the cradle of my hands which become soaked with tears. It's the kind of cry that steals your oxygen and makes you feel ill. I can't stop heaving. How can things be so perfect one minute and an absolute disaster the next. How could he do this?
After about ten minutes a light tap sounds on the door. I'd almost forgotten that miss perky would be bringing up my bags. I almost want to tell her to piss off but I need my things.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
I stay seated on the floor while I vigorously rub my eyes, willing the tears to halt for just one minute while I answer the door.
When I feel somewhat in control I stand up and grip the door handle, realising that no matter what I do, it'll be obvious that I'm in a state. So I pull the door open and force a small smile.
"Hey baby."
What.
The.
Fuck.
"W-what ar-"
"I told you I couldn't do long distance." Drayton shrugs his shoulders with a sigh, leaning against the door frame with his black cap on backwards and his fitted black t-shirt and grey chinos on.
I don't know what to do, I don't know what to say. Part of me wants to slap him straight across the face, part of me wants to jump into his arms. So I just stand there and stare at him in disbelief.
"And I did say that if our paths happened to cross again, it was meant to be." He starts to walk inside, not taking his eyes off mine. With each step that he takes forward, I step back. His arm stretches backwards and he swings the door shut. "Soooo, I just left my UCLA dorm room, picked up your bike, rode it here and this is us, crossing paths. Because obviously" - he rolls his eyes - "we're meant to be together."
"Well I don't wanna be with you!" I scream, finally able to form a sentence. "I just spent the last four and a half hours falling apart because I thought my boyfriend broke up with me, over fucking text!"
"I feel like I should be offended." He cocks his head to the side with a small smile. "You really think so low of me that I'd do that to you?"
"Well- no but- I just-"
"I did mean it when I said that I couldn't do long distance," he interrupts, stepping forward with one stride and pulling me into his arms. No matter how mad I am, this is my safe place and I let relief take over. "So I'm at UCLA babe. Half n hour away."
"How long did you know you'd be going there?!" I slap his arms, arching back so that he can see the full extent of my furious scowl.
"Months!" He huffs, shaking his head as if it was the most tiring thing he's ever done. "It was torture. But I wanted to surprise you."
"You're sick!" I start to tear up again. I can't help it. I want to be mad. I do. I should be! He's such a dick. But the fact that the love of my life will be at a college half n hour away instead of in another state, is far too overwhelming. In the best way. "What about your dad!?"
"He came around eventually," Drayton murmurs, not looking me in the eye. "Mom helped with that."
I think back to the graduation party and remember the smug look that he'd given me in the kitchen. He fucking knew and so did Ellie. Ugh.
"You're such an asshole." I sob, no doubt looking hideous while I cry like a child.
"Hey." He cups my face in his hands and I feel my heart rate start to pick up at the simple contact. "No more of that" - his thumbs swipe the tears away - "it's me and you now gorgeous. I love you."
"I love you too."
