Chapter 5
Brady's POV
My mind swirling with thoughts. But the first one was the one that made the most sense....kind of.
Toodles? Who says Toodles? She is one crazy, beautiful, goofy girl....NO! I can't think that. She wants to be captain of the soccer team. My soccer team! I can't let that happen!
After I calmed myself down, I realized something. That I had let someone take advantage of me. She did take advantage of me, right? Yes, she did. She pulled me in with that voice of hers, yes it's beautiful and royal, but she then challenged me. I could feel my jaw clench. No one takes advantage of me.
No one.
I went through my classes, but I didn't really feel like I was there. I didn't even realize that McKinley was in most of my classes, well, all of them. Except for science and our electives. She had chosen this book club thing as an elective, whereas I had chosen wood shop. Why are you thinking about all your classes with her? Besides, doesn't it strike you as weird that you know her schedule and all her classes? I was right, I needed to stop thinking about her.
You need to focus on soccer, son.
I could hear my dad's voice coming from the back of my mind. My teeth clenched, probably because my father and I had a not so great relationship with him. He cared more about how I did in soccer than what I actually wanted to do. I haven't even been able to finish the third movie, Lost, in the Core Trilogy.
As my forehead creased with annoyance, I heard my grandmother's voice. "Deary, do what's is right, and if you ever don't know what to do, play a little bit if Frank Sinatra!"
I decided to take her word for it, but I may have tweaked it a little bit. I was just listening to the words of my fellow students. I was sitting down at lunch, at the 'popular' table. I had all these girls beside me, their true beauty small, their shirts smaller. If you could them shirts. They each had a face full of make-up, and hair that looked like barbies. Plastic.
Because that's what they are. Plastic. Fake. Molded.
I just smiled at the girls, but the fake one. Not the one I used with her.
She doesn't cake her face in makeup. She just brushes her hair and goes. She is just kind and sweet and smart. She's an angel.
"Yo, man, you seem pretty zoned out!" My buddy, Charlie raised an eyebrow. I don't respond, my eyes accidentally wandering to McKinley.
"So, a girl, huh?" He smirks at me.
"No. There is no girl." I swiftly look away.
"She's pretty cute, if ya ask me," Charlie went on as if I hadn't said anything.
"I didn't ask you. No one did. Now, how's Isaac doing?" Isaac was Charlie's grandad.
"Better! They said he'd have to go back on chemo, but the amount would be lower. Thanks for asking." He had a glossy look in his eye, before digging into his food. He ate like a pig.
"Oh yeah! Jacob is hosting a party next week, a rager apparently, wanna come? You should bring that girl," Charlie laughed.
"Umm, sure I'll come. But there is no girl, " I mumbled, picking at my food.
I thought back on what Charlie said.
There is no girl......right? McKinley Dallas is sweet. She's good at soccer. She's selfless. She's goofy. She's crazy. She's beautiful. She's an angel. But she challenged me. So there is no girl.
But I just thought about what she had said earlier. And the funny thing is, I wouldn't mind if she was a Captain. I just didn't want the boys to corrupt and hurt her.
She's like a sheep in a wolf's skin.
