Ren had slightly gotten more used to riding on the maze of railways that was Shibuya station. At least he liked to believe he was, while there were railways and passenger trains where he lived before coming to the city it was nothing compared to the labyrinth of railways here. He still remembered how he'd gotten lost just trying to find the way to Shujin Academy on his first day.
But at least he got to meet Ryuji and Ann that day, despite his mishap.
"Ahhh! I nearly slept in," Ryuji exclaimed as he practically ran over to where Ren was. Ann was not too far behind him.
"Good morning Lady Ann," Morgana said, poking his head out from Ren's bag. He almost looked like he was trying to grin.
Ann let out a huff. "I told you to set an alarm," she mumbled as she adjusted her clothes and fixed her hair, a few strands having come free during her run.
"I did! Not my fault it didn't go off, what's your excuse," Ryuji grumbled, shaking his head.
"I fell asleep watching tv, okay!" Ann told him glancing away, she looked at Ren. "Morning to you two, by the way," she said, her tone instantly becoming more cheerful.
Ren smiled, giving them both a small wave. "Morning."
Morgana let out a loud purr as he shifted in Ren's school bag. "Lady Ann, told me good morning," he practically giggled.
Ryuji rolled his eyes. "He's in his own little world huh."
"As usual," Ren sighed, glancing up toward the ceiling when the train station's announcement echoed out. "There's our train, we should get going."
Riding the train every day still felt a bit odd to Ren, having lived out in a place that was somewhat in the country that meant that most places were either within walking or biking distance. Everything from stores to school were places Ren just typically walked to, and while he had gotten used to the trains they never failed to make him slightly nervous and his stomach slightly unsettled.
The fact that there had been a train accident due to a mental shutdown definitely did not help things one bit either.
"I still don't know how you always manage to wake up on time. I wish I had that power," Ann sighed, stretching as she leaned back against her seat.
Ren gave a small snort as he glanced up from his phone, reading through the few Mementos requests available. "It's because of Morgana, not me," he chuckled.
Which was true, although he'd gotten more used to waking up on time without Morgana practically yowling in his ear and jumping on him every morning, Ren was sure he'd have come to school late more often.
As Ren glanced down at his phone, he quickly looked away towards the window of the train when the words on the screen seemed to zip past his eyes. Trying to catch the new messages continuously loading on his screen making him feel slightly dizzy. Ren takes a deep breath through his nose, ignoring the slight uneasiness that'd begun to creep into his mind.
"Oh yeah, when I brought him to my house he kept poking my back with his claws," Ryuji huffed, looking over at Morgana with narrow eyes.
"I was trying to get comfortable, not everyone is uncivilized like you Ryuji," Morgana protested as he shifted in Ren's bag.
Ren noticed a few people glance over, more than likely hearing Morgana's meowing. Before he could remind Morgana to quiet down a bit the train suddenly lurched, practically screeching to a stop and he grabbed his school bag to keep Morgana from falling off his lap.
"You okay?" Ren asked Morgana, as a voice played over the train's intercom apologizing for the abrupt stop.
Morgana nodded eyes wide. "It-it, nearly stole one of my nine lives."
"So you are a cat," Ryuji said, although the statement is innocent enough it makes Morgana glare.
"No, you idiot I'm not a cat!" The cat in question snapped, his earlier fear quickly forgotten.
Ann frowned. "But you just said it nearly stole one of your nine lives."
Morgana looked at her, his glare instantly disappearing. "Please, Lady Ann, I assure you I am not a cat."
Ren chuckled as he looked back at his phone, the sight of the train tunnel walls zipping by making his stomach churn slightly. Although he frowned, closing his eyes for a second and swallowing hard when the words on the screen seemed to swim before his eyes.
When his stomach lurches this time when the train begins moving once more, Ren forces back a hiccup as heat prickles along his skin, leaving him uncomfortably warm.
He puts his phone in sleep mode when another glance at the screen sends a wave of dizziness washing over him. Instead turning his attention to the window as he takes deep breaths in through his nose.
As a kid, Ren used to get motion sick on trains nearly every time he'd rode on one, and while he thought he'd outgrown it he was starting to wonder if that wasn't the case. One thing that always seemed to help was taking deep breaths, but the air in the train car is humid and muggy, a far cry from the crisp clear country air.
Ren feels like he's melting, he carefully opens his eyes when the train comes to a stop, and as he carefully climbs to his feet to get off the train he can only hope that his symptoms calm down as he, Ryuji, and Ann transfer to the next train that'll complete their journey to Shujin.
As they board the train Ren smiles slightly, while he still feels queasy and slightly dizzy. It's a far cry from the full-blown nausea he'd had seconds earlier.
"Think we should go to Mementos today?" Ryuji asked him.
Ren frowned as he checked the requests on his phone once more. This is a mistake because the second he does the words swim before his eyes, his stomach flips and he barely swallows back a soft hiccup as he nodded slowly. "Yeah...we probably should. You two don't have anything planned for today right?" he asked, he feels his stomach churn almost violently as his head seems to spin.
And that's when he realizes to his horror, that he is indeed suffering from a full-blown case of motion sickness.
"No, at least nothing I can't do some other day," Ann said cheerfully.
Ryuji shakes his head. "Nope, got nothing." Then he frowned, glancing at Ren, "You okay dude? You look kinda pale."
Ren visibly swallowed when the train lurches to a stop at one of its stops, which causes his stomach to slosh violently, bile burning the back of his throat. "Yeah, I'm fine," he murmured, the lie slurring slightly as it leaves his mouth.
He's practically too nauseous and dizzy to even function at the moment let alone focus, his stomach bubbling as the train begins moving again.
As Ryuji looks away seemingly satisfied, Ren just barely stifles a burp into his hand, his vision becoming slightly blurry as dizziness begins to overwhelm him. He briefly wonders if he can hold out just a little longer, after all, they have two more stops then his eyes snap open as his mouth begins to quickly fill with coppery tasting saliva.
A warning that he's going to puke everywhere in the next five minutes if he doesn't get his stomach under control somehow.
He covers his mouth with his hand feeling way too sick to bother with the facade at this point.
"Ren?" Ann said, looking over at him with wide eyes. Ren does not look good, he's incredibly pale and his face has a slight green tinge to it that Ann doesn't like one bit.
At the tone of concern in Ann's voice, Ryuji looks up at Ren as well, a frown on his face.
Ren is incredibly still, his eyes squeezed shut as he takes quick shallow breaths, trying his best to breathe around the ever-mounting dizziness and nausea. Then he hiccups and shakes his head slowly. "Gonna, be sick," he barely managed to force out his words, slurring and thick with nausea.
For a second, Ryuji, Ann, and Morgana just stare at him, then they panic, considering they're in a moving vehicle and didn't think they had to prepare for something like this. None of them really know what to do in this type of emergency.
Ren swallows rapidly, trying not to panic when each and every swallow forces his stomach further up his throat bringing with it the slight taste of bile that only sets his stomach churn even more. He can feel his own drool against his hand, as he gags.
His friends are still panicking, at least Ren thinks they are he's a bit too preoccupied with his own misery to tell right now. He opens his eyes slightly and reaches down, his finger frantically fumbling with the zipper of his school bag as his stomach gives a gurgling noise and it heaves making him jolt forward slightly.
He finally manages to unzip his bag, practically shoving Morgana on the floor, as his stomach heaves again, his cheeks puffing out with vomit, and before he can even think of swallowing it back down, it burst through his lips spraying through his school bag through his fingers.
It's warm, slimy, and thick, steadily dripping from his hands as the sour bitter taste of bile and the remnants of his breakfast coat his mouth. He coughs lurching forward again as more vomit gurgles up his throat.
Save for his vomiting the train car is deafeningly silent and he can feel all eyes on him, which only makes his face burn with shame and embarrassment. Especially when he hears some laugh and say, "Look at this dumbass, stinking up the train car."
Morgana, Ryuji, and Ann glare over at the group of boys wearing Shujin uniforms. Ann reach's out laying a gentle hand on Ren's back as he burps, coughing up another wave of vomit. "It's okay, just try to get it up. Ignore them," she told him reassuringly, her tone gentle.
Ryuji gives a huff as he briefly turns away from glaring at the group of boys. "Who do those assholes think they are, it's not like he can help it."
Ren desperately wants the floor to open up and swallow him, anything to get away from the sheer embarrassment he's feeling.
"Do you think you're done?" Morgana asked hesitantly as he looked up at Ren.
The boy has his eyes squeezed shut, soft hiccups still leaving his body as he panted despite the fact he'd thrown up just about everything in his stomach. "I want to go home," Ren said, still not opening his eyes. He was still horrifically dizzy and nauseous, and wanted it to just stop but knew it wouldn't unless he got off this god-forsaken train.
Ryuji looked at Ann and nodded. "I'll walk him back." Ryuji offered to which Ann only nodded, still rubbing Ren's back.
Morgana gives a soft hum, biting back the urge to ask Ryuji to carry him since it would be a long way back and he couldn't exactly ride in Ren's school bag at the moment.
Ryuji helps Ren off the train at the next stop, practically leading him by hand since his legs were shaky. And while they do get a few odd looks, more so because of Morgana following after them they get no comments about Ren's slightly sickly appearance nor the vomit coating one of his hands and slightly dripping from the bottom of his school bag.
This is good, cause Ren has already experienced enough shame to last five lifetimes and definitely does not need, nor want any more of it.
