he shook the excess water off of the umbrella just before the door to the convenience shop shut. turning around and sticking his hands into the small pockets in his jacket, he felt a shiver shock through his body as it adjusted to the warmth of the store.

glancing up to send her a smile, he met her eyes which were already directed towards him. he turned around, hiding the blush on his cheeks that could have just been because of the cold air outside and his cheeks which hadn’t returned to their original shade yet, but nevertheless, he turned away after their short-lived and silent exchange and made his way over to the coffee machine.

he could sense her eyes on him as he prepared his coffee but his mind drifted to the relief that was provided when he saw the full container of sugar packets.

it may be gross to some people but he really didn’t like the taste of coffee at all and all the sweetness he added was enough to mask the bitterness and give that extra wake up call that coffee already provided.

snapping the lid on his cup and sliding on a cardboard sleeve to prevent getting burned, he turned around and looked up to meet her eyes again for a millisecond before she snapped her eyes back down to the paper beneath her fingers then back at him slowly with a smile as she turned to the register.

he smiled back at her, noticing the prominent bags beneath her eyes. eyes that were large and almond-shaped with a deep chestnut color that looked warm and kind despite her obvious sleep deprivation.

he placed his cup on the counter and took out the appropriate change to pay for it, placing the coins on the hard surface before nodding his head at her, picking up his coffee again and turning around to head back for the door.

but before he made it all the way, he stopped and turned around, glancing over the space one more time before grinning at her and saying,

“you should play some music in here, it’s too quiet.”

then he turned around, opened his umbrella and stepped into the rain.
