Chapter 2
I woke up with Craig laying next to me. His strong arm was wrapped around my waist and his mouth was wide open.
My stomach was doing summer salts. I was going to throw up. I carefully moved Craig's arm and ran to the bathroom.
I got on my knees and puked in the toilet. I wiped my mouth and leaned against the tub. I heard a knock on the door.
"Are you okay?" He asked in his morning voice.
"Yeah, just something I ate."
"Can I come in?" He asked.
"No, I don't want you to see me like this."
"I've seen you naked before and you won't let me help you when you're sick?"
If you only knew.
"I guess you're right." I said, quietly.
He opened the door and got a washcloth out of the cabinet. He wet it and then placed it on my forehead.
"Hey Palmer?" He asked a few minutes later.
"Yeah?"
"Are you pregnant?"
"No."
"How can you be sure?"
"Because I'm on the pill."
I lied.
"That doesn't always work."
"Well I'm for sure not pregnant." I said sternly.
"I don't believe you. I'm going to get you a test. I'll be back in a few minutes."
Cancer patients can't get pregnant.
"Whatever you say, Craig." I said looking down.
He walked out of the bathroom, grabbed his keys and out the door he went. I waited a little while before getting up and walking to my purse.
I grabbed the pills out and got a glass of water. I took the pill and then put the glass into the sink.
It wasn't long until he was back.
"Come on." He said, not stopping to even look at me. He rushed into the bathroom and opened the box. I followed close behind.
"Craig, I'm not pregnant." I said.
"Just take the test, please." He said while handing it to me.
This is a waste of time.
I sat down on the toilet and placed the test in under me. After a minute or two the test was ready to read. I couldn't tell if Craig was nervous or excited. In one way I wish he didn't want kids with me.
The test read two lines, positive.
How can this happen? I can't deliver a baby. I won't be strong enough. I'm not going to be alive long enough to carry it to term. Plus there is a greater chance of a miscarriage.
"What does it say?" He asked.
"Two lines." I said, my voice was horse.
"I knew you were!" He yelled.
"This is amazing." He added as he jumped up and down.
"Aren't you excited?" He asked.
"Yeah, just a little shocked."
"We're having a baby, be happy!" He yelled. He picked me up and spun me around.
"I've always wanted this especially with you." He said as he put me back down.
"We have to make a nursery and have clothes and go to birthing classes and go to the baby doctor." He began to list.
The doctor. Dr. Jones.
"I uh I need to go get something at the store, I'll be back in a little while."
"We just found out we're having a baby and you want to run off?" He asked.
"It'll only be a few minutes."
"I can go get it. I have to protect you even more now. You know since your pregnant." He said with a huge smile on his face.
"No, I'll be okay." I said, grabbing my keys and heading out the door. I didn't even care that I was still in my pjs.
I sped down the street and pulled into the hospital parking lot. I got out of the car and walked into the hospital.
I basically ran to the elevator and over to Dr. Jones' office. The lady at the front desk tried stopping me, but it was no use. I walked in to see him looking at his computer.
"Ms. Smith?" He asked with a surprised look.
"You don't have to be back here until the 15th." He added.
"I'm pregnant." I said.
"You're what?" He said, standing.
"I'm pregnant. I threw up this morning and my boyfriend came in to check on me. He wouldn't stop taking about how he thought I was pregnant, so I finally told him to go get a test. It was positive." I explained.
"Cancer patients can't get pregnant."
"I know that." I said while sitting in a chair that was in front of his desk.
"Let's do an ultrasound." He suggested.
I nodded my head.
He walked over to his desk drawer and pulled out a portable ultrasound.
"This will be easier on the couch." He said.
I got up and laid down on the leather couch. I lifted up my shirt, just enough to show my stomach.
He put on the cold gel and placed the control on my stomach and moved it around.
His face went blank.
"How can this?" He began to ask, but stopped.
"I'm actually pregnant?" I asked.
"Yes, you're three months along."
"But the treatment. Wouldn't it hurt the baby?"
"Yes, but it looks normal. You need to stop taking those pills and get on vitamins." He said, his face still shows shock.
"Can I actually have this baby?" I asked, sitting up.
"I uh I don't know." He said.
"I need to get back home." I said while getting up and running out of his office.
I ran all the way to me car. I'm sure people looked at me like I was crazy, but my life right now is extremely crazy.
I got into my car and started it. I raced home, but I didn't get out of the car right away. I rested my head on my steering wheel. I closed my eyes and let my thoughts wonder every possible that could happen.
A few minutes later I felt my door open. I looked up to see Craig standing there with a concerned look on his face.
"Your nose is bleeding. Why is it bleeding?" He asked with fear laced in his voice.
That doesn't surprise me.
"We need to talk." I said as I got out of the car.
