Chapter 29

Esther sits at the table slowly sipping her morning coffee. She stares out the window deep in thought. The events from last night heavy on her mind.

The house was so quiet. Tim, Kirstie and Avi were still asleep. Or so she thought.

"Morning, Sister." Avi yawns as he heads to the coffee maker.

"Morning, Hun. I thought everyone was still asleep." Esther says.

"Kirstie still is. Where's Tim?" Avi asks as he sat down at the table. "Is he still asleep?"

"Yeah, we were up pretty late last night talking." Esther says as she mindlessly stirs her coffee.

"Is, uh, Is everything okay between you two?" Avi asks with a worried look.

"Oh, yeah." Esther smiles as she reaches over and pats Avi on the hand. "We're fine, Sweetie. He was more or less talking some sense into my head."

"Good." Avi nods as he looks down at his coffee. "I mean, it's good that things are fine."

"Can we talk about last night?" Esther asks.

"Not if you're going to preach at me about me and Kirstie. What we did last night was all me. She had no idea what I had in mind." Avi says.

"No, Honey, that's not it. Tim made me realize that I was smothering you. And that I was refusing to let you grow up." Esther says softly. "And I am so sorry. After seeing what you went through at school, I just wanted to protect you from all harm."

"I'm not a little boy anymore, Es." Avi says as he draws imaginary lines on the table.

"I know that now. You've grown into a fine young man." Esther smiles as she takes him by the hand. "Tim made me realize that too. We got into a fight because I didn't want to face the fact that you were no longer a little boy. And that you didn't need me to watch over you anymore."

"That's not true, Sis. I'll always need you to watch over me. You're my big sister." Avi says as he squeezes her hand. "But I also want to experience life. And I also don't like you and Tim fighting. I really care about him a lot."

"I know you do and he cares a lot about you too. Tim and I are fine. You might say, we kissed and made up last night." Esther says, her cheeks blushing.

"Oh, geez, Esther." Avi chuckles, shaking his head.

"Hey, I may be a lot older than you but I'm still sexually active." Esther laughs.

"Ewww." Avi laughs covering his ears.

"Excuse me?" Tim asks from the doorway.

Esther and Avi burst into a fit of laughter.

"What the hell did I just walk in on?" Tim asks with a shocked look on his face.

"Good morning, gorgeous." Esther says with a smirk on her face.

Tim stays in his tracks. He didn't know what to say or do.

"Want some coffee?" Esther smiles as she gets up from the table.

Tim nods slowly as he eyed the two.

"You can sit down." Avi chuckles. "I don't bite. But apparently, Esther does. Nice hickey."

"Shut up, Avi." Tim mumbles as he takes a seat.

"Sorry." Avi laughs.

"Oh, Ben called this morning. He's opening back up the restaurant in the morning." Esther says as she sits Tim's coffee down in front of him.

"That's good but it kinda sucks too. I like you being around." Tim says as he smiles up at her.

She leans down kissing him rather passionately.

Avi loudly clears his throat.

"What?" Tim smiles innocently.

"Have you heard any news about the school?" Esther asks as she sits down beside Tim.

"It'll be at least another month. It was hit pretty hard." Tim says.

"Uh, Tim?" Avi whispers as he looks around at the door to make sure Kirstie was nowhere around. "Since Kirstie is going back to work tomorrow, could you help me with something? I wanna carve her something."

"Wait, you're asking ME to help YOU carve something?" Tim asks not believing his ears.

"Yeah, you are an art teacher." Avi says.

"Yeah, but you are the one with the gift." Tim says.

"Well, anyway..." Avi says waving Tim's comment off. "I have this idea, I want to carve her a long stem rose. With the petals and everything. And I've actually never carved a flower."

"Sure, shouldn't be that hard." Tim says with a nod.

"Morning yall." Kirstie yawns as she stumbles into the kitchen, hushing the conversation.

She stops at looks at the three at the table. All three smiling mischievously.

"What?" She asks, wondering what she had just interrupted.

"Nothing." Avi smiles and shakes his head innocently.

"Don't tell me nothing. You three look like the bird that ate the canary." Kirstie says with a slight smirk.

"I just had to keep Esther and Tim from making out on the table." Avi answers with a serious expression.

"Avi, it was just a little kiss." Tim chuckles.

"A little kiss with a lot of tongue." Avi laughs.

"Avriel Kaplan!" Esther says in shock, putting her hands on her hips. She turns her head to glare at her boyfriend. "Did he learn that from you?"

"What? No." Tim laughs shaking his head. "Why would you think that?"

"Just sounds like you." Esther smiles.

"Naw, Tim told me to think with m......" Avi was saying before quickly interrupted.

"Uh, Kirstie. The restaurant is opening back up in the morning." Tim says very quickly.

"Oh, yeah. Ben called." Esther adds.

"Darn, I kinda enjoyed being off work." Kirstie pouts as she sits down beside Avi laying her head on his shoulder.

"Me too but I also need to work." Esther says.

"It's gonna be lonely around here when everyone goes back to work." Avi says.

"We'll just make sure that you have plenty of gas in your bike so you can come to town if you want." Kirstie smiles.

"Speaking of gas, I need gas for the lawn mower." Avi says.

"Speaking of a mower, I need to go get my mower." Tim says.

"Wasn't it in your shed that got destroyed?" Kirstie asks.

"No, luckily, Adam borrowed it to mow his yard when his wouldn't start." Tim says.

"Please tell me it's a riding mower." Avi says.

"Yeah, it's a riding mower. It's a Bad Boy, Zero turn, 60 inch." Tim answers.

"Okay, you lost me after 'riding mower'." Avi chuckles. "I kinda blanked out after that."
