Chapter 10
Avi stood, not moving a muscle, watching Kirstie's baby blue Mustang until it was out of sight. Then a smile came across his bearded face.
Kirstie pulls away watching Avi in her review mirror. She smiles. "I'm fixin' to make you mine, Sweetheart." She says to herself. She lets out a scream and beats on the steering wheel. "OH, MY GOD!! I CAN'T BELIEVED I JUST KISSED HIM!!! She yells.
Avi turns and runs into the house. He had forgotten all about calling his sister back. He grabs up the phone and presses the button that she had programmed for the diner. His hands were still shaking. "I can't believe she just kissed me." He mumbled to himself as the phone rings.
"Ben's Diner" Esther answers.
"Hey, Sis." Avi says getting prepared for what was coming next.
"WHERE THE HECK HAVE YOU BEEN!!!?" She yells into the phone.
"I told you I was working on my bike. I didn't hear the phone." Avi explains.
"Well, you scared the crap out of me. I thought those bullies had already found you." She says in a much calmer voice.
"No, I'm fine. Kirstie came by and checked on me." Avi smiles thinking of the small blonde.
"Yea, I called her when I couldn't get in touch with you." Esther says scribbling on a piece of paper.
"Uh... Sis? Are you busy? I need to ask you something." Avi says straightening his beanie.
"Nope. Whatcha want?" She asks.
"Uh, You promise you won't laugh or tease me?" Avi asks, knowing he has paybacks coming to him for teasing her about Tim.
"Honey, you know I'm not gonna laugh at you. What's wrong?" Esther asks, beginning to get concerned.
"Uh... do you....d-do you know if K-Kirstie has ... uh... a boyfriend?" He stutters.
"No, she doesn't. She broke up with her last boyfriend several months back." Esther smiles. "Whyyyy?"
"Uh....no...no reason." Avi smiles nervously looking out the window.
"Awww, does my baby brother have a crush on Kirstie?" Esther teases.
"You said you wouldn't tease me." Avi whines.
"No, I said I would laugh. You remember all those times you teased me about Tim Foust? Huh?" She asked.
"Unfortunately yeah. I'm sorry." He snickers.
"You don't sound very sorry." She chuckles rolling her eyes. "Oh dear, look who just drove up in the parking lot, a baby blue Mustang."
"Sister, PLEASE! I'm begging you. Please don't say anything. I'll do anything you want." Avi frantically begs.
"No more teasing about Mr. Foust?" She demands, watching Kirstie walk across the parking lot. "You better answer, she's fixin to come in."
"UGH!! ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT!!" Avi shouts.
"O.K., I won't say anything. Love ya. Byeeeee!" She hangs up as Kirstie walks in.
"Oh God, why do I not trust her." Avi mumbles, rubbing his hands down his face.
~~~
Kirstie walks into the diner with a silly smile on her face. "Hey, Esther." She says as she walks behind the counter.
"Hey, girly. What's up?" Esther says with a huge smile. Thinking of Avi's crush on this girl.
"Oh, I went by and checked on your brother. He was fine." She says, fixing her something to drink still smiling.
"Yea, I know. I just got off the phone with him just before you came in." Esther says, watching her, wondering what had her smiling like the Cheshire Cat.
"Can I ask you something?" She asks leaning on the counter beside Esther.
"Sure" She says counting her tips.
"Uh, does Avi have a girlfriend?" Kirstie asks biting her bottom lip.
Esther smiles and shakes her head. "No, Avi's never had a girlfriend. He's never even been on a date. He doesn't have very much confidence in himself. He doesn't think any girls would like him because of the way he is. And the bullying that he's been through has really effected him."
"That's so sad. He is so gorgeous and seems really sweet." Kirstie says.
Esther shrugged, "Well, yea, I do have a very handsome little brother. And he is a sweetheart. Why are you asking about Avi?"
Kirstie shyly smiles. "Do you think he would go out with me?" She asks.
~~~
Avi sat and stares at the list of numbers Esther had on the phone. He knew the first button was 911. The second button was the diner. But those were the only two he could remember.
He knew one of the numbers had to be for Mr. Foust, after all, Tim was his teacher. But he didn't know which one it was. He had to talk to him and ask him to the party on Sunday.
Giving up, he set the phone back down. He would just go to town tomorrow after he got gas for his bike and talk to him then. And maybe stop by the diner, if a certain Mustang was there.
He really liked Kirstie and would love to ask her out on a date. But that would be hard to do considering he didn't have any money.
She wouldn't go out with him anyway. Why would someone as beautiful as her, want to be seen with a loser, a dog, a retard.
Avi could still hear the voices of the bullies as they call him those names. Names that were now branded into his mind.
He sighed as he walks out on the front porch and sits down in the porch swing. He reached up to straighten his beanie and pulled it down to cover his ears.
But then, why did she kiss him. Did she really like him or was she just teasing him like the bullies at school?
He's known her for about a year now. She knows how he is. She didn't quite seem the type to make fun of him. So maybe she did like him.
