Chapter Twenty-Eight
Noah's POV
"Thank you sir, I'm glad you are back home and in good health." I reply to Jamie's dad.
Something dark flashes through his eyes as he shares a look with Amy, but it was so fast that I wondered if it even happened. But it did, it was there. I saw it. And I start to worry the tiniest bit. For his sake, and for his family's sake.
I know how hard it is for them with him just being sick. But that look signaled that something even bigger than that was going on...
Jamie's phone begins to ring. She looks at the caller ID and furrows her brows slightly. Giving me a glace and telling her parents that she'll be right back, she leaves the room.
I am still wondering about that look as Jamie leaves. I hear some mumbling at first, then nothing for a while.
I hope everything is okay. I decide not to dwell on it too much though because if something was wrong, Jamie would know by now... Right?
Just as quickly as Jamie left the room, she re-enters, trying to hide the growing smirk on her lips.
My eyebrows quiver, 'who was that?' I mouth to her.
'Tell you later.' Is all she mouths back before jumping back into conversation with her parents.
I am puzzled, who would she be talking to that left her grinning that widely? Maggie?
"Who is that, honey?" Jamie's mom asks her, noticing her fingers flying across the keyboard.
"Oh just Maggie, she's coming over in a bit, I'm helping her get ready." Jamie answers.
Okay, so Maggie obviously wasn't the one on the phone if she is just texting her now.
Maybe that red head girl that Jamie is sometimes with in the cafeteria?
Possibly.
Could it be another guy? No... No it couldn't be. Jamie wouldn't cheat on me. She is not that type of person. Why would I even think that?
Jamie once again leaves the room, heading upstairs to set up her stuff to help Maggie get ready for her date with Ryan.
I watch her get up to leave, then something hits me.
Girls take a long time to get ready. And if Maggie is like the majority of the female population, she will also take an hour minimum to get ready. Which means I will be spending an hour minimum alone. (Much longer than a simple phone call). One hour alone, with Jamie's parents.
My eyes widen at the realization as Jamie whips her head around to smirk at me, realizing the same thing I am.
I turn my head back around, ever so slowly, facing David and Amy.
I've been with them before, they're very nice people. But all those times, I have been with Jamie as well. Now that she's not in the room, how awkward will it be? I shouldn't be too worried, I mean, these people raised Jamie.
Jamie is the most amazing person I know. If she is the result of them, they must be just as great as she is.
Or they could turn out to be absolute crazy people who will interrogate me from every action I have shown towards their daughter before going all whacko parents on me.
I have seen 'meet the parents,' I know how this stuff works.
"So, Noah," Amy starts. Oh no, not her. I really didn't think she would be the one to start the interrogations, don't the dad's usually start this stuff? "How's school going?" Oh. Well that wasn't too bad. Just casual conversation, maybe I did over react a little bit.
"School's been great so far. I made the honour role last semester and it looks like it'll be the same this one. All of my classes have been really great and I'm happy with the outcome." I respond.
"That's lovely. What classes did you choose to take for next year?" Amy continues.
"I took all academic courses, as well as gym and music for my options."
"I didn't know you were into music. What do you play?" David asks me.
"Yeah, I've been into music for a long time, I play the guitar, and the piano, but not as well. I also do a bit of vocals but mainly just for fun. I've never taken a lesson for vocals." I reply, laughing slightly at the end.
"That's great son," David tells me.
Although he calls me 'son' casually it tugs a string in my heart, just to be called that by someone who likes me and seems to care about me, as a father figure should, it gets to me a bit. I know my dad is progressing but we still don't have that bond back. So when David calls me 'son' it feels really great.
"You'll have to play for us sometime."
"Yes, for sure. I'd like that. I'm a tad rusty though, I haven't picked up the guitar in a while seeing as everything has been a bit hectic."
David chuckles alongside Amy, "yes it sure has been."
I clear my throat, not sure if I want to ask the question that has been on my mind for a while or not. I know that I want to know, so I can be there for Jamie and her family. But at the same time I don't want to know. Everything is just going good for them. I don't want to have to hear bad news. I don't want them to have bad news at all. These are some really great people. They don't deserve this.
"Sir, I know this may seem a little personal, and you don't have to answer... But, I have to ask. Is everything okay? Like truly okay? Earlier, when I made a comment regarding your health, I saw the look you showed, the emotion that everything is simply not okay. Was I just imagining that? Or is something wrong?" I ask, trying to sound confident and concerned but my voice comes out weak.
David sighs, looking at me, then at Amy, then back at me.
Amy's eyes have a gloss over them, tears threatening to fall at any given moment. She pats David on the shoulder and nods once, encouraging him to speak.
My heart rate picks up as he opens his mouth.
"Noah... I-I am dying."
