{Part Thirty-five}

We walked together down the street. It was slightly chilly out, but the sun was already beginning to shine through the faint clouds.

Josh held my hand as we walked, and that made me feel even happier.

"You know," I said, breaking the silence, "I think this is the first time I've ever seen you wearing any colors."

Josh glanced down to his blue jeans, then smiled sideways at me. "I like black and white, I guess."

We soon arrived at the café. It was early, so the only people in the shop were an older man with some coffee, and the clerk behind the counter.

I looked over all the doughnuts in the display. They seemed to have every type--original, lemon, apple, maple, cherry, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon. They even had some flavors I'd never seen before, like pumpkin, and bacon.

"What are you going to get?" Josh asked, lightly nudging my shoulder. It didn't feel alien, like human contact normally did. It felt right. Comfortable and safe.

"Chocolate with rainbow sprinkles," I said sheepishly. "I'm still a little kid."

Josh laughed. "You don't have to be a little kid to love sprinkles. I think I'm getting the maple bacon, because bacon is life. How about you go get us a table somewhere, and I'll order?"

"No, no, I'll pay," I promised him, pulling my wallet out of my back pocket.

"I'm the one taking you out, I can pay," Josh said with a smile.

"I--" before I could finish my sentence, Josh kissed me.

Right there.

In the middle of the café.

After about ten seconds, he pulled back. "I'll pay, okay?"

My voice was quiet, and my face was bright red. "Okay."
