Josh's car was a small gray four-door, with gray upholstery. It smelled faintly like cigarette smoke.
"I bought it used," Josh apologized as he started the engine and pulled out of the lot. "I don't smoke."
"It's pretty nice for a used car, though," I commented. "It's nicer than mine."
"What's yours like?" Josh asked.
"It's a red Toyota truck. The paint's chipping off in places, and there's holes wearing through in the seats. But it still drives, and that's all I really need."
We sat together in silence for a few minutes.
Josh kept his eyes to the road. I kept my eyes on Josh.
Now that we were close together, I noticed more of his details. He'd taken off his skeleton mask completely when he'd gotten into the car, and it showed off his brightly colored red hair, with shorter dark brown hair on the sides. His eyes were really dark brown; they made me think of coffee before any cream or sugar were added. He had ear gages, tiny black ones, which I liked. He also had a bit of scruff on his chin and the sides of his face.
As we reached a stop sign, Josh glanced over at me, and caught me staring. Embarrassed, I turned my head forward to look at the road. He smiled and turned on the radio.
We sat there at that stop sign, half listening to a commercial on the radio. "What kind of music do you like?" Josh asked.
"A lot of different stuff," I said, sort of sheepishly. "Alternative, punk, some R&B."
"What bands?" Josh started driving again, pulling through the intersection. (A/N: AND THEN A SEMI TRUCK SLAMMED INTO THEM!!!!!!! Jk jk, they're fine.)
I listed some of my favorite bands, counting on my fingers. "Green Day, Hozier, David Bowie, The White Stripes--"
"You like The White Stripes?"
I was unsure if Josh was questioning my music choice, or approving it. "Yes?"
"I have White Blood Cells in my stereo right now!" Josh reached out and pressed a button on the dashboard, and the album started playing from where he had last left off listening
As I gave Josh directions to my apartment complex, I smiled and listened as We're Going To Be Friends floated up from the radio.
