Updated June 2023

We mentioned before that our group is big on activities that help motivate our writers to keep moving their story forward. In this chapter, we will discuss some of these in depth.

Mod Monday
A weekly opportunity to question the SUAW moderators about the running of the group and about the group activities. You may ask a question directly to one of the moderators on the day or fill out our Mod Monday form which is located on the discord server.

Feedback Assignments
There are two ways of gaining feedback on your work with Shut Up and Write. We have two regular feedback activities to suit all ages, genres and abilities.

Shut Up and Critique is run by one of our group admins, and is similar to a book club only more advanced. For those who wish to take part, out moderator will put you in pairs with another member of the group, they will be your partner for three weeks. You will read one chapter of their book a week and provide a 400 word review of the chapter on Google Docs. This activity is for more advanced writers and places are limited. We will never make you read something you are not comfortable with. This takes place on the main SUAW server ok Discord meaning you will have to have access to Discord to take part.
Requirements
• Discord
• Ability to critique and review other members books
• Need to be active within the club
• Must be a SUAW member
• A book this does not have to be on Wattpad as we accept google docs and Microsoft word as well.

Shut Up and Read Book Club (#SUARBC)
ShutUpandReadBC
Is run by one of our moderators, and is a read for read book club. Unlike SUAC, it is more suitable for beginner, and intermediate writers who want a bit of feedback on their book, but would rather have comments on Wattpad rather then write the more advanced feedback.  You will be put into pairs once every two weeks and exchange comments on each other's work. We accept writers of all genres and abilities and will never make you read something you are not comfortable with. This activity takes place on a separate server, so you will need access to Discord for this activity

Requirements
Book on Wattpad (min 1 chapter)
•Discord

Occasional Writing Prompts Prompts are posted on occasionally by one of our admins. Generally, you will have three choices of prompts to choose from before basing a scene or short story off of. Sometimes our admin will share three photos that portray very different concepts, and ask our members to choose one to write a story for. Other prompts may include a choice of written creative prompts pulled from Pinterest. Occasionally, our prompts will include a list of characters that you are challenged to incorporate in your story. It is encouraged that members share their scene in the comments or link us to a google document.

Word Wars: Word wars are big in the months during Nanowrimo competitions, but we try to host them all through out the year. Word wars are a fun and motivation activity in which a group of writers set a time limit in intervals of usually 15 minutes, and try to write as many words in that time frame as they can. The goal is to 'win the word war' by writing the most amount of words during each interval. It is a fun and productive way to move your story forward.  Our Discord server now has Sprinto, a word war bot that helps keep track of your score.

Writing Assignments: The assignments vary, but as an example of our latest assignment, members are asked to write a 1000-1500 word short story under theme/genre of ADVENTURE. We plan on sharing these short stories on this joint account each month.

Collaborative Story Projects:
If you are interested in co-writing with other members, this would be a perfect time to join the community. We plan to allow members to participate in collaborative story projects in which members are to write a story together. Once the project is complete, the story will be taken through critique circles and shared on the joint account with all credit given to the writers.

Contests and Competitions:
These always vary, but generally have the same rules. Contests and competitions are when our admins assign a writing assignment, but will have 'judges' read over the story projects at the end of the deadline, and decide who has the best work. Prizes included!
•First Impressions
•Survival of the Fittest
•The Board Game
•SUAW Olympics

Writing School
In our designated writing school channel, one of our more experienced writers will teach the group something new. This could sometimes include 'homework', which is a small assignment set by the Teacher of that lesson. All members who wish to give a lesson in our writing school must write all their ideas down in a google doc and send it to the moderators who, if they think it is suitable, will arrange a date and time.

We encourage all of our members to participate in these activities to exercise their writing abilities, and work towards earning points on the leadership board for a prize. Remember, the active member with the most points will receive a bundle of prizes!
