Chapter 6
I don't know why I'm nervous it's not like this whole thing is real, maybe that's the scary part. I'm playing a part and in the end someone will get hurt. I'm almost one-hundred percent positive it won't be me because I could never like someone like Jace. He's not a good person and no one deserves to be treated the way he treats others.
I'm meeting with him in a little less than an hour, work has been really slow today. Charlene didn't show up again and I'm starting to worry about her. We don't really talk outside of work, but that doesn't mean I don't care. I tried to ask Uncle James where she was, but he ignored my question and asked me to prep the new releases for Tuesday, so I've been stuck in the backroom for half of my shift.
Out on the sales floor it's busy and my aunt seems overwhelmed with customers. She's the only one ringing so I go over to help. She looks thankful the moment I step up behind the register.
"You should have told me you needed help. Uncle James made me do the new releases," I tell her.
"It wasn't like this until ten minutes ago," she tells me.
I'm glad she wasn't all by herself with a crowd this big. My Uncle doesn't normally like to ring up customers, he's a behind the scenes type of guy. I prefer behind the scenes too, but don't mind talking to the occasional customer. The line moves a lot quicker with the two of us working together. The door chimes and Charlene comes in with her head down and pissed at the world. I'm surprised she's here, but I'm glad because I have to leave in twenty minutes.
"Hey Char," I say.
She sighs and nods her head as she passes by. I wonder if she's pissed at me for talking to him, but in my defense I didn't even know that was THE Jace. She makes her way into the backroom, I want to go back and talk to her but I swear this line keeps getting longer and longer. I find myself getting into an in depth conversation with one of our regulars about the band Trapt and how they were a good band that slipped through the cracks.
Charlene comes out of the backroom and her voice carries through the whole store, "I hate you!" she yells loudly.
Some of the customers turn to look as she makes her way over to the register.
"My dad says you can go," she says.
"Okay," I say stepping away from the register.
"Hey, are you mad..."
"God Faith I'm not mad at you, it's not all about you!" She's angry I get it, I'll just leave it alone.
I head into the backroom to get my things together so that I can leave. My Uncle is sitting at his desk prepping something, he looks annoyed. They must have really had it out back here because I've never seen him so quiet. I tell him goodbye and all I get is a grunt. My aunt is the only one who says goodbye as I head out the door. It's just a little after three, but it will only take me less than five minutes to get to the club. It's really cold today so I'm hoping he doesn't take too long, that and because I forgot my beanie so my head is so cold.
I get to the club and the only people around are some employees who are just starting their shift. Henry usually comes in around three to prep the bar area, and I know the manager is usually there super early. I recognize a few employees who wave at me as they go by. They know I'm friends with Henry and are always nice to Nicole and I.
I look down at my phone I guess I'm expecting a text, but then I realize that I don't even have his number. It's so cold so I start bouncing on my feet. The sky is turning a dark grey and I'm pretty sure it feels like it might snow. This time when I check my phone I look for the time and it's almost four, I've been standing here for just under an hour. I'm giving him till four fifteen then I'm out of here. I could be home snuggled under my blankets eating popcorn and pigging out on junk food, but here I am standing here in the cold trying to prove a point. What was I even thinking? My instincts are telling me that I should just forgot this whole thing.
Just as I had thought a light snow starts to fall. My ears and nose literally feel like they are going to fall off my face they are so cold. I've been on my feet all day and they are starting to yell at me. I'm sure he's off getting high or probably passed out drunk somewhere without a care in the world. As the snow picks up I start to head back to the apartment because there is no way I'm standing out here any longer.
I walk up to the apartment just as Henry does. He's got some grocery bags in hand so I take a few from him to lighten the load. We head up to the apartment and once inside I help him put things away.
"Milk and Bread?" I snicker.
"What? Didn't you watch the weather lady?" he questions as I put the milk in the fridge.
"I predicted the weather, no need to watch a channel that's wrong ninety nine percent of the time," I laugh.
"Well if your so called psychic powers were good they would have told you that we've got a storm on the way," he tells me.
"Like a legit one?" I ask. "Because every time they say blizzard it's like some cheap ass one that barely covers the sidewalk," I say.
"I'm serious," he says.
I finish putting the groceries away and head over to the window. I pull the curtain aside and sure enough after only being inside for ten minutes the sidewalks are now covered in at least two inches from when it started. The wind is picking up too and you can hear it howling as the snow flies around in circles.
"Okay, so you were right. How late is Nicole working? Hope she can get home okay," I say.
"I'll text her, if I have to I'll actually break out the car and take her," he says.
Since moving to the city none of us have driven anywhere, we walk or take transportation it's just so much easier. City traffic is like literally driving in hell. It's not like driving on Long Island, although overpopulated it's more spread out. In the city the dotted lines that show people where their lane is don't mean shit. It's like a free for all and if you make it back alive you're lucky.
"I'm going to make some dinner," I say.
"Hey weren't you supposed to go out for dinner?" he asks.
"Yes and I was stood up," I say.
"Wow. I mean I knew that guy was a piece of shit, but to stand you up, that's just wow," he says.
"I know right?" I ask.
I start looking through our cabinets for something to make for dinner and there isn't much and there's no meat in the fridge so pasta it is. I start pulling out everything to make my famous pasta sauce with boiled eggs and get to work. I need a distraction. This whole thing with Jace may be just fake, but I'm a little hurt that I got stood up. I've never had someone not show for something.
Henry's phone beeps and he lets out a sigh.
"She gets out at five she only worked for one showing tonight and she wants me to go and get her," he says.
"Oh, okay. I'll keep dinner warm for you guys then," I say.
"You okay?" he asks.
I nod and smile because of course I am. He knows how I get being alone for extended periods of time. After what happened with the guy from the club I can't help but be uneasy. Henry had installed a deadbolt on the door to make me feel safe, and even installed one of those camera's you can check on with an app. It's great and all, but I still get uneasy being alone.
I watch as he grabs his things and keys and heads out the door. Before cooking I walk to the window to watch him leave. The snow is coming down even harder and the traffic has started to slow. I have a feeling they won't be arriving home until late. I put on my big girl panties, close the curtain and get to work. To distract myself I put on some random playlist on our ALEXA and get to work.
