Chapter 4
I get home a little after ten. When Charlene left I decided to work a full twelve hours, I'm beat. I come in throw my shoes on the plastic mat in the small entry way and shut the door. Both Nicole and Henry are sitting on the couch with a popcorn bowl between them. Nicole covering her face with a blanket.
"Have you seen this shit yet?" she squeals covering her eyes with the blanket again.
I walk over and swat Henry upside the head, he chuckles and I stare at the big old school box TV. Of course Henry would make her watch one of those ridiculous thriller movies on Netflix.
"You know how she feels about these, you're an ass," I say pushing into him so he moves over.
I plop down next to him as Nicole screams and hides, a few strands of blue hair peak out from the blanket. I reach over and grab some popcorn from the bowl, Nicole's hand reaches out to slap me and then she retreats back under the blanket.
"Hey, I'm pretty sure this popcorn was in my stash," I tease.
"So?" she questions.
"So how was work?" Henry asks. "Thought you were only working a short shift today?"
"It was interesting," I say finally getting a hold of some popcorn.
"Interesting how?" Nicole says peaking her head out to look at me.
"Interesting as in Jace showed up," I say.
"Jace?" Henry questions.
"The guy from the bar," I tell him.
I've got Nicole's full attention now, and Henry's too. He's even paused the movie. They both turn to me and stuff their faces with popcorn like I'm the movie now.
"I'm still a little in shock myself," I say.
I reach for popcorn and this time both of them smack my hand away. I laugh, "What the hell guys?"
"Story and then popcorn," Nicole says chewing on some.
"Fine," I say. "So he starts talking to me spewing some shit about how he wasn't stalking me, and trying to make really awkward small talk. He acts all confident and everything until Charlene shows up. She made a huge mess of some CDs, and when I look up she's staring at him," I say turning to them crossing my legs in front of me. "Remember the guy that totally messed her up good in Washington?" They both nod. "Well it's Jace," I say.
"You're shitting me?" Nicole says in horror.
"No shit here. I'm totally serious, pinky swear," I say.
"Wow," she says.
"Right?" I look at Henry and he's still shoveling in popcorn and watching with wide eyes. "So anyway, they start arguing and suddenly my Uncle comes over knows exactly who he is and kicks him out. After Charlene storms off and Jace leaves my Uncle says to me if he ever comes to the store to tell him and he'll call the police," I say.
"I wonder what he did to her, maybe there was more than what she told you," Henry finally speaks.
"That's what I'm thinking. I have to say I honestly never wanted to kick someone's ass and make them feel so much pain that they literally crawl into a ball and die," I say. "Well not die, but you get it," I say.
"It's too bad there isn't a way you could teach him a lesson," Nicole says. "I'm assuming since he isn't from here he's just here on vacation, it'll be hard to find him again," she says.
"You girls are nuts, haven't you watched enough chick flicks to know that teaching someone a lesson always ends up with the wrong person getting hurt," Henry says standing to refill his soda.
"Yes, but this is real life so it'll turn out different," Nicole says.
"You act like we could really pull it off, I don't even know where he is," I say.
"Well let's just say we do find him again, how would you hurt him," she says turning to me. She's also sitting with her legs crossed. I hear Henry cough from the kitchen.
"If I could I would do exactly what he did to her, I mean he broke her. She's not the same Charlene she was when she left for school. Remember all of those guys she dated in High School?" I ask.
"One every week," Nicole says rolling her eyes.
"Exactly, and now that count is at zero aside from Jace. So what if there was a way to break his heart somehow? I mean he acts like nothing affects him, but there's got to be a way to break him down," I say.
"He is interested in pursuing you..." Nicole starts.
"You girls need a hobby," Henry says.
"Shush you," Nicole yells swatting her hands as he sits between us again.
"What if I got him to fall hard for me, but instead of being the girl he's used to..."
"Which is most likely girls that throw themselves at him, or ones that think they can fix a guy," she says rolling her eyes.
"Isn't that what you're trying to do? Fix him?" Henry asks.
"No, break him. There's a big difference," I say.
"Not really, but okay," he says turning the movie back on.
Nicole pulls the blanket so she can't see the TV, and the only thing in her vision is Henry and I.
"Anyways, instead of being like the girls he's used to I'll just be myself. I'll play hard to get. I can tell by the way he looks at me it's like I'm a prize waiting to be won," I say.
"And what happens when you fall for him?" Henry asks.
I smack him on the shoulder and he chuckles.
"Don't laugh at me," I say.
"I wasn't, I was laughing at your ridiculous plan," he says shoving some popcorn into his mouth.
"It's not ridiculous, if I ever see him again I'm going through with it. I'm going to show him how it feels to have your heart crushed a million times over," I tell him.
"Okay, whatever you say," Henry says. I smack him again and then rest my head on his shoulder.
"You know I've been a hard ass since the incident," I tell him.
"I know, just don't want to see either of you get hurt," he says.
"We know," Nicole and I say at the same time.
Nicole rests her head on his other shoulder and we continue to watch the movie together. I know it's stupid and childish and maybe the basis for every rom-com, but I don't care I need to teach that guy a lesson, and I really hope I get the chance.
