Chapter 30
It's been a week since Jace left for Washington, I've deleted his number from my phone and Nicole and I burned the letters. I didn't tell her but I kept some. It's stupid I know. Today I'm on the subway heading to Annabel's apartment in Brooklyn. My twin ESP tells me something is wrong, so I hoped on a train with a tub of stress cookies and am now only two stops away. The subway isn't too crowded today, it's a Saturday afternoon I just hope she's home.
The subway jolts to a stop and the doors open. I step out and the good old smell of urine hits my nose. Subways are so gross. I'll have to remember to wash my hands the second I get to her place, those poles are infested with germs. I need to remind myself to take a cab to the court date in a few weeks. I got a call the day after Jace left saying they'd pushed back the date. Figures, I'd have to wait a bit longer.
I walk up the steps and out into the warm spring weather. Its sweatshirt weather today, and there are some buds blooming on trees. Although my allergies have been god awful I'm thankful for warm weather. She's only a block away from the subway station. When I first moved to the city I was terrified of the subways, now I'm so used to them I can take them in my sleep and still get where I need.
I buzz the outside bell and wait for a response.
"Hello?" one of her roommate's say.
"Hi, it's Fai... Amelia," I cringe. "Annabel's ..."
"Oh thank god you're here," the voice says, she sounds upset.
The door buzzes and I walk in. She's on the third floor. Hearing the concern in the girl's voice makes me nervous. I race up the stairs and turn down a hallway. There's a young girl about my age standing at the door. She's got long blonde hair and a dancer's body.
"Everything okay?" I ask walking towards her.
"She's been locked in the bathroom for two hours," she says. "We're getting worried. And Tabitha has to get ready for work," she says.
"Did you guys try to pick the lock?" I ask.
"No," she says.
"Is she responding?" I ask.
"No," she says again.
Are these girls high or just dumb? Who in their right mind would wait two hours for a friend to come out of the bathroom? I'd have called the police or tried to have gotten in myself. I push past her and turn to ask where the bathroom is. She points down a small hallway. There's only one door at the end that's closed. I knock loudly.
"Annabel it's Amelia," I say using my real name. "Annabel," I say pounding on the door harder.
Shit. I look down at the lock and it's one where I can stick a coin inside and turn it. Her friends are standing there with their mouths open waiting for something to happen.
"Can one of you grab your phone, just in case," I say. "We may need to call 911," I say.
"Got it right here," the other one says.
She just popped her head out of the bedroom when I hit the door. She's got the phone in her hand ready. I look through my bag and pull out a coin. Carefully I twist the lock and it opens. I open the door carefully in case she's near it. I look across the black and white tiled floor and sure enough she's passed out on the floor. My heart stops I'm not sure if she's breathing. I rush to her.
"Call 911" I yell back.
I can hear the girls phone beep as she presses the numbers. Her voice fades as I race towards my sister. I roll her over, she's on her side. Her face is pale. I press my fingers at her neck waiting for a pulse. My eyes blur, please let there be a pulse. I feel it lightly pounding against my fingertips. Thank god. I sigh and wipe the hair from her face. I smell something and notice puke in the toilet with a hint of red. Shit. I'm trying to keep myself together, but I'm not sure if I can. The first girl steps into the bathroom, I turn to her.
"Is she?" she questions her voice is small.
"Not yet," I say.
"Did your friend call?" I question.
She nods.
"I'm sorry," she squeaks.
"It's okay," I say my voice breaking.
I run a hand through my sisters hair, she looks so frail. I knew something was up when I'd seen her two weeks ago. I wish I would have realized sooner. We may not get along, and I can't stand her not even for a second but I never wished this upon her. I do love her, even when I hate her.
"Can you find her cell and call my parents?" I ask.
"Sure," she says.
She runs off to do that and in the distance I can hear the sound of the sirens, I just hope they get here soon. I may be calm, but I really don't know what to do.

My sister is stabilized, apparently she hadn't eaten and if she did she probably threw it up. She's got an IV drip going, and she's still out of it. I'm sitting in her room on my phone, thank god I always have a charger in my bag. I've been by her side for a few hours now and it's given me some time to catch up on reading.
I hear voices outside the door, it sounds like mom and dad.
"They better take her back," I hear her say.
"I paid good money for that school," dad says. "They will I'll make sure of it," he adds.
"She's got her second show next month we paid good money for those tickets, she will dance in it," mom says.
Is she serious right now? My sister doesn't need to dance she needs therapy. I put my phone down and stalk over to the door. I pull it open so fast mom and dad jump in surprise.
"Don't you get it? Your daughter is sick! She's mentally ill and needs help. Do you know what she was doing?" I question.
They both stand there dumbstruck. Mom has a questioning look on her face, wondering why I'm even here.
"If and when she did eat she was throwing it right back up, she didn't just stumble upon a "fad" diet, she's sick. And you both are screwed up in the head if you think she's dancing any time soon. We may not get along, but I know what my sister needs and it's not that school. She needs a program that handles eating disorders. If you speak with the doctors they have a few suggestions. If you don't want to lose both of your children I suggest you listen to them," I say.
A few nurses stop and stare at the scene unfolding, but I don't care.
"I'm starving, so now that you're here I'm going to get some food," I say.
I walk back in unplug my phone and then push past my parents, who's jaws are still hanging open. I walk down the hallway towards the cafeteria where the nurse had directed me earlier. I'm so hungry my stomach literally feels like its eating itself. I decide to eat in the cafeteria away from my idiotic parents. I check my messages and notice I have a few from Nicole and Henry. They say they are going to come after work together so that I don't have to travel the subway at night alone. I'm unfamiliar with the area and I'd be okay, but I'd rather have the comfort of my friends right now. It's been a rough few weeks and I'm tired.
