Telepathic Mushrooms??
It had been months since Elsa's mother had spoken to her. Elsa wasn't even sure if her mother still remembered how to speak. Ever since the incident with telepathic mushrooms, her mother had decided that speaking was for lesser mages. She'd decided that a witch as famous as her needed to use the greater form of communication which was telepathy.
There was a problem with that though... Elsa's mother Frida was a well respected woman but not because of her witchcraft. She was famous for being among the best herbologists in the Caldera plains. One aspect of her work was collecting magical mushrooms. It was a difficult job as many of the mushrooms were indistinguishable to the untrained eye. The ones that improved focus, the ones that cured the dancing curse and the ones that gave people explosive diarrhea all looked more or less the same.
The aspect of her job that had been more problematic recently though, had been the part that involved dealing with the patients. Elsa had to deal with many a confused and frustrated adventurer while her mother stared into their eyes pressing her finger onto her forehead in an attempt at telepathy. Thankfully, Elsa had learnt a bit of her mother's trade and was able to help most compatriots.
Frida had been getting more and more agitated by her recurrent failures. She'd take focus mushrooms each morning and try to wake her daughter up using with powers of her inner voice. Elsa kept waking up to her mother breathing into her face with unblinking eyes. It never got less weird. All this effort made Frida more tired than usual, she was easily frustrated and made mistakes more often than she used to. She couldn't accept failure against the telepathic mushrooms though.
The said mushroom had somehow evolved to creep into the minds of passers-by and mimic the roars of griffins and screams of banshees. This was probably to keep people from plucking them because once properly cooked, they became quite a delicacy. The fact these fungi could use telepathy but she couldn't wasn't sitting well with Frida.
On a particularly pleasant morning, Elsa woke up to the voice of her mother. "Elsa", the voice said. She woke up feeling great assuming her mother finally gave up on her meaningless endeavor. To her surprise though, Frida wasn't in her bedroom at all. Had she finally done it?? "I'm in the toilet", her mother's voice whispered in her ear. "Ate wrong mushroom. Need more paper."
Elsa had a long laughed more than she'd like to admit before she went to fetch paper for her mother. What months of effort couldn't accomplish, a moment of embarrassment did.
