Cogs

It's funny how you don't even think about breathing, you just breathe. You go to bed in the dark, and wake in the light. We take it for granted, we don't stop to think about the complexity involved, that is; until it doesn't anymore.

103 days ago our planet stopped. The dark never came and the light never left, it's been 103 days of light. Colossal cogs appeared out of nowhere, reaching up to the heavens. People screamed as they appeared destroying the land, like quakes drilling through the planet.

No one knows what's happening, why they stopped? why they are here? scientists work relentlessly trying to find some answers. We thought our planet was like the others out there, boy, were we wrong.

Before the cogs appeared I was training to be a pilot, life was pretty good; normal.

Now, I watch. For hours and hours, I watch.  I look for signs of movement, noise, anything different. But nothing ever happens.

My song comes to an end and I pull my player out to change the music and adjust my headphones. My fingers shake as I put my gloves back on.  I feel a warm hand on my shoulder as I look out at the gigantic dark cog that seems to take up the whole horizon.

"Warm drink?" You could see Joe's breath in the cold air as he shivered, his frosty blue eyes seem to match the icy landscape.

"Oh, you are a gent, Joe" He smiled as he passed me the warm flask

I stuck it straight against my body feeling the heat. I had been on a 10-hour shift and I could barely move the weather was so cold.

"Anything remotely exciting happen?" I pulled my snood down taking a long sip of the coffee and shook my head at Joe as I let out a little laugh

"Nope, dead as ever and colder than ever too. I think it's getting worse" He looked out into the distance shaking his head as he pulled his large hood up "We need to find answers soon, Morgan.  Or we will all be dead"

I pulled my snood back down again looking at Joe in all seriousness.

" I don't think we have long Joe, I wish there was something we could do instead of just standing here day to day watching?" I stood getting ready to leave. Joe grabbed my arm and pulled me close to him. I could smell the coffee on his breath.

"What if there was something we could do Morgan! meet me, later at our spot. I have something to tell you" He whispered in a shaky voice looking around nervously as he spoke, and I could see he was serious.

"I'll be there Joe" I squeezed his hand as I walked away already in thought about what he knew. Could we help in some way?
